Investing in Community Safety

With a profound sense of pride and gratitude, the Allen Police Department, under the auspices of the Allen Police Association (APA), diligently serves the Allen community. From seasoned sergeants to dedicated officers, esteemed veterans, and invaluable support personnel, they form a unified front, steadfast in their mission to safeguard the rights and safety of Allen residents and businesses. Their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property epitomizes their dedication.

The APA places a paramount emphasis on community well-being. Officers, alongside their families, collaborate with the APA to actively participate in charitable endeavors. Through a myriad of outreach programs and volunteer initiatives, they strive to enrich and uplift the welfare of our community.

“APD IS COMMITTED TO KEEPING OUR CITIZENS SAFE BY CONTINUING TO WORK WITH CITY LEADERSHIP TO KEEP A POSITIVE AND PRODUCTIVE ENVIRONMENT.”
- OFFICER EGIZI

Recently, the APA has embraced the Texas Meet and Confer Law, a pivotal step towards empowering its members in negotiating benefits for first responders. Serving as the collective voice for firefighters and police officers, the APA undertakes the responsibility of engaging in negotiations with the municipality. These negotiations encompass a spectrum of employment terms, including wages, benefits, and working conditions.

To facilitate effective communication and address the evolving needs of its officers, the APA conducts quarterly meetings. These off-site gatherings provide a conducive environment for open and candid discussions, ensuring all shift officers have the opportunity to participate. During these sessions, officers have the platform to raise pertinent topics for discussion with the chief or inclusion in future Meet and Confer contracts.

One of the APA's notable advantages lies in its direct access to the chief of police. Since assuming office on February 2, 2024, Chief Steve Dye has wholeheartedly supported the APA's endeavors. With an unwavering commitment to transparency and responsiveness, Chief Dye readily lends his ear to the concerns brought forth by the APA. This direct channel of communication allows for timely resolution of issues, bypassing traditional hierarchical structures.

Officer Dillon Egizi shared that "The Allen Police Association enjoys serving our community and supporting our fellow hardworking officers. The Allen Police Department is committed to keeping our citizens safe. We will continue to work with city leadership to keep a positive and productive environment."

The Allen Police Association stands as an advocate for first responders and a beacon of community service. Through its unwavering dedication, collaborative spirit, and proactive initiatives, the APA embodies the essence of service, compassion, and unity, ensuring the safety and well-being of both its members and the community they serve.

The front desk ladies were so pleasant and helpful! This was my first time meeting Dr. Wood and he was amazing. He took his time explaining what each test was for and answered any questions I had. I never felt rushed or made to feel foolish for not knowing what things meant. Marshall helped me pick out a new frame and really took his time making sure I loved what I got! I appreciated his honest opinion and his patience. After going home I decided I wanted to exchange my frames for a different pair I had seen in their office. Empowering Your Financial Journey

In today's complex financial landscape, discussions about money management may evoke apprehension and uncertainty for some people, especially individuals who manage both their personal and business finances. Despite how daunting the idea is, postponing financial planning can hinder a family from building generational wealth.

At the core of effective financial planning lies a fundamental step: assessment. Whether contemplating retirement, preparing for a child's education, or navigating business working capital, the journey begins with an evaluation of one's financial circumstances and aspirations. This reflective process sets the stage for envisioning a clear financial trajectory—a roadmap tailored to individual goals and aspirations.

We sat with the experts at Altland and Harris Financial Group, Inc. to get their input on some common questions families and business owners may have like, "How do I save for my child's college education?", "How much money do I need to retire comfortably?", "How do I get more capital to grow my business?", or the infamous, "What is considered a tax write-off for my business?".

Henry Harris, the CEO of Altland & Harris, states that "Although there may be quick solutions like a 529 College Savings Plan, a tax-advantaged savings plan for future education costs, there are restrictions and limitations that consumers must be aware of". As far as a “comfortable retirement,” that might look different depending on who you ask, which will lead to further questioning like, "What's your timeline until retirement?".

When it comes to business finances and a business owner looking to grow their business with limited capital, having a trusted CPA is a key business partner. A good CPA should help identify tax-savings advantages by understanding your business as if it were their own and help set up tax

savings measures. Further, they can help you prepare your business finances, which is a requirement for most creditors and/or banks when qualifying for a loan.

As much as we would like to separate our personal and business life, especially when it comes to finances, it can be challenging since they may impact each other inherently, especially for a business owner who has devoted their personal life savings in hopes to create financial freedom for themselves or their families.

When it comes to your financial investments and well-being, it is imperative that you work with someone you trust who is knowledgeable and understanding of your unique set of circumstances.

One thing that defines Henry, and his firm, is the sheer amount of time and knowledge he gives back to his community. When he’s not volunteering to tutor children and adults at his local church, he is an adjunct professor at Collin County Community College where he teaches a class to help students earn their certification through the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. He’s also a volunteer facilitator of a free monthly tax workshop at the college to help business owners get off to a successful start.

Henry is a natural-born educator with the knowledge and desire to help people succeed — whether it’s building a prosperous business or investing for retirement. When you work with Henry and his team of qualified professionals, you’ll get the dedication to deliver superior service and attention to detail you need to help reach your goals.

All that being said, when it comes to financial planning, there is not a “one-sizefits-all” for any one client. If you have any questions, please reach out to Altland and Harris at hharris@moneyconcepts.com.

BEYOND THE STAGE

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF INVESTING IN THE ARTS

BACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE
28

Investing in the arts is not just about supporting creativity; it's about nurturing essential life skills. For young performers arts education provides a holistic approach to learning and continued involvement in the arts throughout adulthood can serve as a healthy escape from the daily grind.

Theatre, Music and Dance spaces provide a safe outlet for artists to develop their emotional intelligence and learn empathy. Artists constantly walk in someone else's shoes, honing their ability to understand and relate to diverse perspectives. These skills are invaluable in a world where collaboration and understanding are paramount. Through portraying characters from various backgrounds and worldviews, actors learn to embody different emotions and experiences, fostering a sense of empathy that transcends the stage.

Whether interpreting abstract ideas or telling compelling stories, the performing arts encourage one to think outside the box

and approach challenges with fresh perspectives. Students of the arts learn to embrace ambiguity and explore multiple solutions to complex problems.

The collaborative nature of these disciplines also encourages participants to listen actively and communicate clearly, fostering solid interpersonal skills essential in both personal and professional settings.

Lastly, and often the most rewarding aspect is the fact that the arts promote mental health and resilience. Dealing with rejection and performance anxiety requires coping mechanisms and self-care practices, fostering emotional resilience and stability. By confronting challenges head-on and learning to manage stress in a supportive environment, artists can develop the skills to navigate life's ups and downs with confidence and grace.

By providing a platform for self-expression and personal growth, engaging in the arts empowers performers to discover their strengths, build meaningful connections, and embrace their full potential. It is not just about putting on a show; it's about shaping confident, adaptable, and empathetic individuals equipped to succeed in any endeavor.

Most arts organizations are non-profits that rely on the generosity and support of the community. Purchasing a ticket to see a show, volunteering your time, donating materials or monetarily are only a few of the opportunities available to invest in the local arts community.

Did You Know?

Participation in the performing arts supplies some serious brain power for kids, according to science. Studies show that music and dance aren't just about the moves; they're like a workout for the brain. Playing instruments or mastering dance steps isn't just fun; it's a boost for memory, problem-solving, and motor skills. Noticed your kid catching those emotional vibes? That's the arts at play, lighting up the emotional brain areas. And when they team up for a performance, it's not just a gig; it's a brain-friendly teamwork exercise, ramping up their social skills and empathy. So, while they're doing their thing on stage, their brains are quietly getting a workout in the background.

INVESTING IN YOUR health

Oral health has multiple components that play out in a person's overall health: you have the biological aspect that affects a person's systemic health, the emotional component that affects one's self-confidence and how they perceive themselves in relation to others, and lastly, stemming from the emotional aspect, these things like one's self-perception have effects on a person's social health. The need to form relationships and interactions with others can be enhanced or diminished based on the factors listed above regarding a person's oral health.

According to the experts at Allen Dental Center, here are the two key aspects  essential to maintaining good oral health:

1. A good relationship with a dentist you trust. What does this mean? Your dentist should be someone who is alongside you on your dental health journey, not just making recommendations for treatment but making it a priority for you to understand the reasons for treatment and how it benefits your long-term health.

2. Good hygiene habits and maintenance schedule. The best treatment is prevention. By educating patients about their specific dental situation and implementing a schedule for check-ups and maintenance, dentists can often stop problems before they begin. This routine

results in a myriad of benefits including, less invasive procedures, financial savings for the patient, and more predictable long-term outcomes resulting in fewer trips to the dentist.

Investing in your oral health is not simply a cosmetic choice but can save one's life. Just like any other part of the human body, when one system gets out of order, it can affect the body as a whole. A lot of people are not aware that a dental infection can get out of hand and lead to life-threatening situations where the airway can be compromised. Studies have shown untreated, periodontal disease has links to heart disease and inflammation. Missing teeth not only results in an alteration to the chewing system, which can lead to dysfunction of the joint and musculature of the face but also has consequences on the appearance of the face, which in turn has consequences on the emotional aspect of a person's health again which can serve as a gateway to more unhealthy lifestyle habits due to a lack of confidence. It all works together in the body; you can't consider one system without considering the relationships it has with other systems.

Studies have shown confidence in one's smile leads to more positive social outcomes. Some include being confident in interviews, job performance, relationships, and other social situations. Unfortunately, people undervalue the impact an aesthetically pleasing smile can have. The good news is that we are in a sort of golden age for dentistry in that we have innovative technology that can allow a person to visualize what a change to their smile would look like before ever altering the tooth itself. The potential this has to offer makes things exciting, especially about the new ways we can help patients in this specific area moving forward into the future.

Investing in your smile is investing in your overall health and well-being. By prioritizing regular dental care, maintaining good oral hygiene habits, and working with trusted professionals, you can ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles and improved quality of life.

A CULINARY AND ARTISTIC JOURNEY AGAINST HUNGER

Empty Bowls McKinney, an annual event, transcends the ordinary by combining the artistry of local professional and student artists with the culinary expertise of renowned chefs. This unique gathering, set in downtown McKinney's picturesque square, showcases one-of-a-kind, handcrafted ceramic bowls donated by local artisans. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, these bowls serve a profound purpose—to combat hunger in the community.

By combining art, culinary delights, and community support, Empty Bowls empowers individuals to make a difference in the fight against hunger.

Attendees not only enjoy a delightful evening sampling gourmet soups and other culinary delights from local restaurants but also take home a unique, handcrafted bowl. Each bowl serves as a tangible reminder of the ongoing struggle against hunger in our community.

The mission of Empty Bowls McKinney goes beyond providing a memorable event. It aims to raise both funds and awareness for nonprofit organizations dedicated to addressing hunger in the local community. In 2023 alone, the event successfully raised and donated an impressive $85,000 to fight hunger.

The urgency of this mission is underscored by the sobering statistics—140,000 Collin County residents are food insecure, and nearly 9,000 McKinney kids face the harsh reality of going to bed hungry tonight. Shockingly, 45% of food stamp recipients are children.

Empty Bowls McKinney contributes to the fight against food insecurity by supporting beneficiaries like Community Life Line and Community Garden Kitchen. Community Life Line, a crisis organization serving all of Collin County, relies on the event to supply its food pantry and aid in the food distribution program. For those facing temporary hardships, Community Life Line provides a safety net of support.

Community Garden Kitchen, another beneficiary, offers the "Dining with Dignity" program—an initiative providing chef-prepared meals in a sit-down style, four nights a week, with no questions asked. The funds raised by Empty Bowls McKinney directly contribute to these vital community support initiatives.

“Attendees not only enjoy a delightful evening sampling gourmet soups and other culinary delights from local restaurants but also take home a unique, handcrafted bowl. Each bowl serves as a tangible reminder of the ongoing struggle against hunger in our community.”

The heart of the event lies in its collaborative spirit. Local artists generously donate unique bowls, while attendees contribute through event sponsors and ticket sales.

The upcoming event on April 25th promises to be another impactful evening. Attendees can purchase general admission tickets for $35, granting them entry at 6 p.m. to choose a handmade bowl and savor soups from local vendors. For those wanting an enhanced experience, the Collector's Club offers early access at 5:30 p.m., exclusive bowl selections, and a deeper connection to the cause, with tickets priced at $125.

Empty Bowls McKinney is not just an event; it's a movement to create lasting change. By combining art, culinary delights, and community support, it empowers individuals to make a difference in the fight against hunger. As the organizers anticipate around 1,000 attendees, they aim to build upon the success of previous years and continue making a significant impact on hunger in the community.

KYLE TIDWELL

Little Elm Fire Chief

First responder of the Month

Kyle Tidwell, Allen Resident Serving as Little Elm Fire Chief

Kyle Tindall, Captain of the Little Elm Fire Department, is being honored as our First Responder of the Month.

Kyle grew up in a small town, Cameron, Texas, and currently resides in Allen with his wife and children. During his childhood, he spent long summer days working on his grandparents' farm, which helped him develop a strong work ethic and a servant heart as he tended to the animals. It was at this age that he knew he would grow up to be a firefighter.

While pursuing his education to become an EMT/ paramedic, Captain Tindall began his journey as a firefighter with the Fairview Fire Department. He later joined the Little Elm Fire Department and worked his way up to driver, eventually being promoted to the rank of captain. In his role as captain, his goal is to develop a crew with the same level of passion and dedication that he carries within himself.

During his days off, Captain Tindall can often be found teaching fire safety to elementary school students, providing CPR training for members of his church community, assisting neighbors with various household projects, or enjoying Friday night lights with his family and friends.

LEADERSHIP
ALLEN FAIRVIEW CHAMBER

The Leadership Program of the Allen Fairview Chamber of Commerce is an exceptional opportunity to enhance your leadership skills, gain insights into the history and governance of Allen, Fairview, and Collin County, and explore avenues for increased community involvement. Throughout the program, participants acquire knowledge about local issues and resources, expand their professional network, and develop essential project and team leadership skills. This involves an introduction to various aspects of fostering and sustaining a vibrant community while establishing connections with a diverse array of community leaders.

The nine-month program is structured to identify, motivate, and cultivate business and community leaders who can make more impactful contributions to their respective companies and instill a sense of community and the significance of volunteerism. Each month, participants delve into a different facet of Allen, Fairview, and Collin County, encompassing areas such as city government and services, education, health and human services, economic development, and justice and law enforcement.

Moreover, participants have the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills through targeted development programming each month, along with two full days dedicated to leadership training and team building. By dedicating just one Thursday each month, individuals can propel their professional careers,

discover the value of community volunteerism, and forge enduring friendships.

Additional information about the Leadership Allen Fairview Class 36 program will be available this Spring, with applications being accepted in June 2024.

“The Program empowered me to recognize the role I can play in improving my community as well as instilled me with the knowledge to understand how I can achieve those goals. I am grateful for my time in the Allen-Fairview Leadership Program, and I look forward to opportunities to serve my community in the future.”

– Jeremy R. Wallace, Class 33

“Prior to beginning my Allen/Fairview Chamber Leadership Program, I had graduated from a 10-month Texas Real Estate Commission Leadership Program. I wasn’t sure what additional I could learn from taking my second leadership class but was pleasantly surprised. For those who may have already graduated from another leadership program or those considering it for their first time, “just do it”. Thank you, thank you Allen/ Fairview Chamber for the opportunity to learn more about our community than I ever could have imagined and for helping me make some life-long friends along the way.” Joe Bogg, Class 30

INDOOR PLANT GUIDE

Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits

Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home.“There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.

SNAKE PLANT:

This plant goes by many names such as Snake Plant and Mother-in-Law’s Tongue and is one of the most popular indoor plants. The Snake Plant is for anyone from a green thumb to a black thumb because anyone can grow it. These hardy plants can adapt to any environment and can live in both high light and low light. Snake Plants are great for countertops and tabletops because they grow tall, not

wide. They are great bedside plants because they help purify the air as they go through photosynthesis at night. They only need to be watered about once a month. These plants can also be outdoor plants and can acclimate during the summer months. Be sure to spray the plants three to five times before bringing them back indoors to get rid of any bugs that could have made the plant their home.

Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.

HOPE PEPEROMIA:

This cascading plant is gaining popularity due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.

“Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.”

This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Protip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again.
