In this spirit, I am delighted to present to you the March issue of our magazine, dedicated to the theme of "Home Sweet Home."

Home is more than just a physical space; it's a sanctuary where we find solace, create memories, and build our lives. This issue celebrates the diverse aspects of what makes a house a home—whether it's the people we share it with, the memories we create within its walls, or the unique touches that make it uniquely ours.

Within the pages of this issue, you will discover tales of families coming together to build their dream homes and the transformative power of interior design. Each narrative reflects the profound impact our living spaces have on our well-being.

Our team has curated articles that explore various dimensions of the concept of home, including practical tips for home improvement, insights into the latest design trends, and stories that capture the essence of the places we call home.

““Seeing people’s faces when they walk in for the first time is priceless.”

A unique addition to Allen’s recreational landscape is turning heads and capturing hearts of locals and families alike. The recently opened Stephen G. Terrell Recreation Center serves as a vibrant community hub offering 149,000 square feet of diverse fitness, recreational and leisure activities to all ages. This impressive center stands as the City of Allen’s largest recreation facility and marks a historical milestone as Allen’s first recreation center located west of US 75.

Terrell Recreation Center is Allen Parks and Recreation’s newest landmark of unwavering commitment to serve the diverse lifestyles of residents. The center’s creation is a celebration of years of city planning, community collaboration, design and construction. Allen residents actively participated in the planning process through public meetings, workshops and online surveys. Kate Meacham, Director of Allen Parks and Recreation shared, “We designed this recreation center to be a community gathering place. Somewhere that provides something for everyone - no matter their health and fitness preferences.”

The result? A facility that resonates with the unique needs and desires of the community, bringing forth a sense of belonging and pride. Whether a fitness enthusiast, a parent looking for family-friendly activities, or someone seeking space to socialize and stay active, Terrell Recreation Center has something for everyone.

AN IDEAL PLACE FOR FITNESS AND PLAY

Step inside, and you'll find an array of amenities appealing to individuals and families of all ages. “Terrell Recreation Center is the result of a whole community planning and working together for many years,” Meacham said. “Seeing people’s faces when they walk in for the first time is priceless.” Each

thoughtfully designed area is bathed in gorgeous natural light, complemented by lively colors and topof-the-line equipment and features. When it comes to sports and fitness, the center is made up of four primary areas for movement, competition and play.

First, spacious group exercise classrooms host popular classes such as cycle, strength-training, yoga, Pilates, barre, and many more. The entire line-up of classes is available to active members and day pass holders. For the seasoned gym-goer, those starting a wellness journey and anyone in-between, the Fitness Floor caters to all workout routines. The floor includes top-of-the-line free weights and circuit machines, high-tech cardio equipment, an indoor track with an inclined adventure option, and an outdoor fitness deck.

As a primary feature of the center, the expansive Fieldhouse Gymnasium holds eight middle school, or four full-sized, courts equipped for basketball, volleyball and pickleball. Enthusiasts and athletes can enjoy countless hours of practice, friendly matches and competitive play through open court sessions, Allen Parks and Recreation adult leagues, as well as activities organized by the Allen Sports Association (ASA).

Finally, head to the Rec Gym to find three versatile courts – one featuring an athletic turf option and indoor batting cages. All courts provide open play time for pick-up games and space for city-sponsored classes.

these spaces are terrific options to rent for a variety of events, meetings and gatherings.

Advocating for a Safer Tomorrow: The Importance of Child Abuse Prevention and the Vital Role of CASA

Child abuse is a persistent and tragic issue that can have devastating and long-lasting effects on the physical, emotional and psychological well-being of a child. Court Appointed Special Advocates of Collin County, or CASA, is a local nonprofit agency that plays a pivotal role in preventing child abuse and ensuring the safety and welfare of our youngest community members by training and supporting court appointed volunteer advocates to provide powerful, best-interest advocacy and meaningful connections for children impacted by abuse, abandonment and neglect.

CASA volunteers are specially trained to meet the unique needs of children who have entered the child welfare system at no fault of their own. Appointed by judges as the Guardian ad Litem, CASA volunteers protect the best interests of their assigned children in court and in collaboration with the myriad of professionals working on the case. A CASA volunteer ensures their assigned children's well-being remains paramount.

23 MARCH 2024 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/ALLENTX
“CASA's commitment to serving these vulnerable children extends beyond the courtroom.”

Unlike often overtaxed caseworkers, volunteer advocates typically work with one child at a time. This allows CASA volunteers to provide each child with the individualized attention they need and deserve. By forming personal connections with these children, CASA volunteers can better understand their specific needs and make the best recommendations to the court for appropriate services, interventions and placements.

CASA's commitment to serving these vulnerable children extends beyond the courtroom, as volunteers often become trusted mentors and positive role models in their lives. CASA of Collin County has been a beacon of hope for children impacted by abuse and neglect with unduplicated advocacy for over 30 years.

Sierra (4 years old) and Casey (6 years old) entered the child welfare system after their biological mother passed away and their father was struggling with substance abuse. Sierra and Casey were placed with a relative to ensure their safety. During this time, their father would attend supervised visits under the influence, failed weekly drug tests and was not completing courses ordered by the court. The girls and their family were losing hope until Linda, a CASA volunteer, was assigned to their case. Linda developed a trustful bond and became someone the girls could confide in. She was a resource and support for their family, and eventually their father. She became a light in the girls’ lives when they felt all hope was lost.

The court granted Sierra and Casey’s dad the opportunity to turn his life around. Through the support of his daughters, his family, and CASA volunteer, Linda, he was motivated to maintain his sobriety, hold a job, and was able to fight for his family. After continued success, dad reunited with Sierra and Casey, and mended family relationships that were once strained and broken. CASA volunteer, Linda, remains a family friend.

Child abuse prevention is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of individuals, communities and organizations. CASA of Collin County needs your support to continue making a positive impact in our community: learn more about becoming a volunteer advocate, make a tax-deductible donation or volunteer your time in other single events, by yourself or with a group.

For over 30 years, CASA of Collin County has provided unduplicated court-appointed advocacy for children removed from their homes and placed into the child welfare system due to abuse and neglect. Court Appointed Special Advocates is a national association in the United States that supports and promotes court-appointed advocates for abused or neglected children. CASA are volunteers from the community who complete training that has been provided by the state or local CASA office.

For more information about CASA of Collin County and to donate today, please visit www.casaofcollincounty.org.

MARINA'S LEGACY

A Tale of Resilience, Family Values, and the Birth of Marinas Cleaning Service LLC

Imagine delving into the stories of closely-knit Mexican families who have embarked on the journey of immigration to the United States. Within these stories, a recurring piece of wisdom echoes across generations, a gem of guidance handed down by our abuelas: "Aunque seamos pobres tenemos que ser limpios," translating to "Even though we are poor, we must be clean." This mantra is a testament to the pride instilled in us by our grandmothers. It is a call to present ourselves with dignity, irrespective of our origins or destinations.

Born on December 6, 1930, in Jalisco, Mexico, Marina Castillo witnessed the harsh realities of the Great Depression. It was a tumultuous time marked by labor shortages, food scarcities, and political unrest in Mexico and the United States. Marina and her compatriots exhibited resilience in the face of adversity, forging a path forward.

Marina, a mother to twelve children, was not just a caretaker of her family, but a beacon of values. Her teachings emphasized the importance of hard work and always putting forth one's best effort. She lovingly taught each child to cook, clean and

nurture their home with love and respect. Beyond motherhood, Marina was a dedicated wife, sister and friend. Her essence included values of excellence, charity, honesty, and a contagious sense of fun.

With her pursuit of excellence, honesty and a knack for infusing joy, Marina left an indelible mark on her family. The enduring legacy of this powerful and loving matriarch did not end with her children. It cascaded through the family line, reaching grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In Mexican tradition, the departed are not truly gone; they live on through stories and the values they tenderly instill.

As Marina's children expanded their families, the invaluable lessons learned from their mother persisted. Rocio, one of Marina's daughters, embraced the path of solo cleaning almost nine years ago, mirroring her mother's hard-working example. Driven by the desire to provide for her only child, Fernanda, Rocio dedicated herself to perfecting cleaning routines and techniques.

Marina Castillo

As Fernanda matured, witnessing the impact of solo cleaning on Rocio's well-being, and desiring to secure her mother's retirement, she made a pivotal decision in 2022—to establish an LLC. Thus, Marinas Cleaning Service LLC emerged as a family-centric venture, offering affordable, high-quality cleaning services. Fernanda assumed the role of CEO, supported by her husband, Jacob, as the CFO. Leveraging years of experience and expertise in refining cleaning techniques, Rocio plays a pivotal role in training new employees and ensuring unwavering client satisfaction.

Marina, and the legacy she created, epitomize the notion that life should be abundant and fulfilling for everyone. Marinas Cleaning Service LLC champions this fundamental character, prioritizing 100% customer satisfaction, fostering a contented work environment, and giving back through their Quarterly Charity Cleaning—a gesture providing free cleaning services to deserving individuals.

In embracing Marina's values, this family-driven business is a testament to the enduring power of a rich and purposeful life.

If your home needs a spring cleaning contact Fernanda and her team at Marina's Cleaning Service via email at Info@marinacleaningservicesllc.com or by phone at (469) 949-3733. Visit their website for more information on their top-notch services,  marinacleaningservicesllc.com.

First Responder of the Month: Officer Michael Delio

Not All Heroes Wear Capes

CL: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER?

Officer Delio: I always knew that I was going to be in a community service position. I wanted to be able to stand up for those that can’t protect themselves. I was a firefighter before becoming a member of the Allen police department.

CL: TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY LIFE.

Officer Delio: My wife and I have been married for over 20 years, and we have 4 kids. We moved from Texas back home to New York for a while to get therapy for our oldest daughter who has a rare genetic disorder.

CL:  WHAT KIND OF SERVICES DOES YOUR DIVISION OFFER?

Officer Delio: I am now in Community Relations. We offer crime prevention services to the public for free. We want to help people protect themselves from both physical and cyber attacks.

CL:  WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?

Officer Delio: I enjoy teaching people how to protect themselves by using the training that I’ve received. I lead free, community workouts on Wednesdays and Fridays at 6 a.m. at Cottonwood Creek church. Offering these classes has helped me maintain my physical strength and do what I love most, serve the community.

We love our Patients!

“Everyone in this office is phenomenal! I loved seeing faith-based art and Bible verses throughout the office. The front desk ladies were so pleasant and helpful! This was my first time meeting Dr. Wood and he was amazing. He took his time explaining what each test was for and answered any questions I had. I never felt rushed or made to feel foolish for not knowing what things meant. Marshall helped me pick out a new frame and really took his time making sure I loved what I got! I appreciated his honest opinion and his patience. After going home I decided I wanted to exchange my frames for a different pair I had seen in their office. I came back and had a young lady help me exchange them with no issues at all! She was so sweet and did not make me feel bad for changing my mind.

Everyone in this office is so great!!! Highly recommend”

CURB APPEAL | HOME + DESIGN

The spectrum of home designs covers diverse aesthetics, catering to various preferences. Like the fashion industry, trends come and go in home design, presenting a landscape where some styles are transient while others endure as timeless and classic expressions.

The influence of social media in shaping design preferences is undeniable, with numerous influencers showcasing bold choices and offering advice to renters, homeowners and fashionistas alike.

Trends in home design show a preference for light and bright color schemes. Various shades of white dominate walls, trim and doors, creating an ambiance of brightness while allowing for darker floors and furniture. This aesthetic choice ensures an airy room and serves as a canvas to accentuate the homeowner's artwork and photographs. Notably, painting cabinets or paneling in white emerges as a prominent trend.

The preference for simplicity and neutral tones extends beyond interior spaces. Homeowners paint exterior brick in light hues such as white or light gray, paired with dark charcoal or black trim. Natural wood tones, introduced as accents through shutters or columns in cedar, contribute to added depth and curb appeal.

Neutral tones, appreciated for their ability to harmonize with diverse flooring and furniture choices, also hold sway in the real estate domain. Their versatility allows homeowners to present their homes to potential buyers without requiring extensive modifications.

For those seeking bolder expressions, accent walls become a creative outlet, offering a means to infuse vibrant hues without overpowering entire rooms. Dark, bold colors on a single wall can dramatically alter the ambiance of a space. Another emerging trend involves incorporating bold geometric patterns in trim, introducing a captivating dimensionality.

Even for those hesitant to take bold risks in primary living areas, the powder room becomes an unexpected canvas for experimentation. Painting it in a dark, bold color injects flair into what might otherwise be a mundane space.

Five Star Painting stands ready to turn home design dreams into tangible reality in this diverse landscape of design preferences, whether drawn to a simple, clean aesthetic or a more glamorous, opulent style. Their expertise extends beyond trends, ensuring personalized transformations that align with individual tastes and aspirations.

The Pop-Up Tent REVOLUTION

A COZY TWIST TO YOUR NEXT CELEBRATION

PARTY PLANNING | EVENT PLANNING + SERVICES 40

In the dynamic world of party planning, a new trend is captivating both kids and adults— pop-up tent slumber parties. Bid farewell to traditional gatherings; the age of personalized tent experiences has dawned. Pop-up tent parties boast diverse themes, from TikTok and Lilo & Stitch to pink boho, Tiffany-Teal, and Taylor Swift. While this trend caters to those who are between eight and sixteen years old, it is also inclusive, hosting parties for boys, girls and even adults.

Challenging conventions, the trend extends to Mom and Me parties for kids aged six and under, where moms join the sleepover festivities. A notable

development is the emergence of Ladies’ Night Out parties, offering a childfree experience that resonates with a wider audience.

The essence lies in providing a unique and intimate setting for each participant. Every child or adult gets their tent or teepee, striking a perfect balance between shared quality time and the comfort of sleeping alone—a touch of “home” for every guest. A key advantage of pop-up tent slumber parties is the hassle-free experience for parents. Organizers handle everything, from tents and air mattresses to décor, making setup and takedown worry-free.

The rise of pop-up tent slumber parties marks a refreshing shift in celebration

dynamics. It’s more than a party; it’s a personalized experience, creating lasting memories in the comfort of a tent and making each guest feel at home. As this trend gains momentum, the pop-up tent phenomenon is here to stay, redefining the heart of memorable celebrations.

Denise Jones, owner of Royal Tents and Events, is a former marine, mom of four kids, and grandmother to seven. Her passion for creating magical experiences for kids’ birthday parties stems from going all out for her own children when they were younger. To book a party and make treasured memories, contact Denise Jones at 469-952-7344 or find her on Facebook at Royal Tents and Events: facebook.com/tentslumberparties.

Enjoy a Comforting Taste of Home

Indulge in the nostalgic comfort of a classic Chicken Pot Pie, a dish that combines tender chicken, mixed vegetables and a creamy sauce beneath a flaky crust.

ingredients:

• 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded or diced

• 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)

Handmade Soap

Add a spa-like feel to your home with this refreshing soap recipe that's simple to make at home.

lavender honey

lemon soap

ingredients

• 2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap

• 1 lemon rind, zested

• 3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds

• 2 tablespoons of honey

• 15 drops of lavender essential oil

• 6 drops of lemon essential oil

• jar or bowl for melting soap base

• Silicone mold

directions

Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn.  If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET

4 WAYS TO ORGANIZE AND INJECT STYLE INTO YOUR SPACE

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet.

How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

MAKE A STATEMENT

Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

01 02 04

UPGRADED HANGERS

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner!

ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR

Group clothes first by kind and color second. Group like with like and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

FACE CLOTHES THE SAME DIRECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

WOVEN + KNOTTED

LIVING BOHO-CHIC WITH WOVEN TEXTURES AND MACRAMÉ

Decorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space... Look for other unexpected places to add a natural twist to your home with a new material woven into your palette.”

AGAINST THE GRAIN

TIPS FOR DECORATING WITH NATURAL MATERIALS

Houzz contributor Katie Treggiden offers many ways to incorporate natural materials and natural-state timber into your home, including using wood to cover one wall in a home for a pleasing accent wall; featuring your firewood as a striking, stacked display; and mixing different types of wood and different finishes in the same space. “A simple way to incorporate the wood trend is to expose structural wooden beams already present in your home,” Katie says. “Instead of painting them or boxing them in, leave them raw or give them a coat of wax to enrich the tones.”

ADDING TASTEFUL POPS OF COLOR TO YOUR WHITE ROOM

Do you feel like your all-white room is missing something? Houzz contributor Kelly Porter bets what’s missing is energy.

“The best way to add a spark to any space,” she says, “is with bright color.”

Kelly says green is one of the easiest colors to live with, looking organic even in its more vivid tones.

“When searching for the perfect bright green, think springtime—fresh green grass and newly sprouted leaves,” she says. “These greens have lively undertones that will look comfortable and warm in your white space.

Other colors Kelly recommends adding as accents are yellow, royal blue, orange, bluepurple, red-purple and sky blue.

Student OF THE MONTH

At four years old, some people were playing with wooden blocks and dolls, but Avery Stafford had already started dancing ballet at the Hathaway Academy of Ballet in Plano. By the time she was nine years old, she discovered that she had a passion for the art form, and by the age of twelve, she moved to the Ballet Academy of Texas and starred as Clara in the Nutcracker.

Her mother, Victoria, homeschooled her from the very beginning, so Avery was able to focus full-time on ballet and have a tailored schedule for her schooling. Now, she spends her days refining her skillset at the Dallas Conservatory, while she completes her 10th grade year in an online school program.

The most impressive thing about Avery's career is that although she was diagnosed with scoliosis, she continues to pursue her passion and only sheds her back brace to perform and train.

We can't wait for her to grace the stage in her upcoming performance of Swan Lake at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas. In our eyes, there is no better place for Avery than on the stages of the world!

AVERY STAFFORD:

To date, Avery's proudest accomplishment was being named a Young Arts winner for 2024. In this exclusive program, she will be able to earn support for the rest of her career through private grants and mentorship programs, which is something any budding artist across all disciplines would appreciate.

Avery Stafford is Definitely on Pointe!
