A unique addition to Allen’s recreational landscape is turning heads and capturing hearts of locals and families alike. The recently opened Stephen G. Terrell Recreation Center serves as a vibrant community hub offering 149,000 square feet of diverse fitness, recreational and leisure activities to all ages. This impressive center stands as the City of Allen’s largest recreation facility and marks a historical milestone as Allen’s first recreation center located west of US 75.

Terrell Recreation Center is Allen Parks and Recreation’s newest landmark of unwavering commitment to serve the diverse lifestyles of residents. The center’s creation is a celebration of years of city planning, community collaboration, design and construction. Allen residents actively participated in the planning process through public meetings, workshops and online surveys. Kate Meacham, Director of Allen Parks and Recreation shared, “We designed this recreation center to be a community gathering place. The result? A facility that resonates with the unique needs and desires of the community, bringing forth a sense of belonging and pride. Whether a fitness enthusiast, a parent looking for family-friendly activities, or someone seeking space to socialize and stay active, Terrell Recreation Center has something for everyone.

AN IDEAL PLACE FOR FITNESS AND PLAY

Step inside, and you'll find an array of amenities appealing to individuals and families of all ages. “Terrell Recreation Center is the result of a whole community planning and working together for many years,” Meacham said. “Seeing people’s faces when they walk in for the first time is priceless.” Each

thoughtfully designed area is bathed in gorgeous natural light, complemented by lively colors and topof-the-line equipment and features. When it comes to sports and fitness, the center is made up of four primary areas for movement, competition and play.

First, spacious group exercise classrooms host popular classes such as cycle, strength-training, yoga, Pilates, barre, and many more. The entire line-up of classes is available to active members and day pass holders. For the seasoned gym-goer, those starting a wellness journey and anyone in-between, the Fitness Floor caters to all workout routines. The floor includes top-of-the-line free weights and circuit machines, high-tech cardio equipment, an indoor track with an inclined adventure option, and an outdoor fitness deck.

As a primary feature of the center, the expansive Fieldhouse Gymnasium holds eight middle school, or four full-sized, courts equipped for basketball, volleyball and pickleball. Advocating for a Safer Tomorrow: The Importance of Child Abuse Prevention and the Vital Role of CASA

Child abuse is a persistent and tragic issue that can have devastating and long-lasting effects on the physical, emotional and psychological well-being of a child. Court Appointed Special Advocates of Collin County, or CASA, is a local nonprofit agency that plays a pivotal role in preventing child abuse and ensuring the safety and welfare of our youngest community members by training and supporting court appointed volunteer advocates to provide powerful, best-interest advocacy and meaningful connections for children impacted by abuse, abandonment and neglect.

CASA volunteers are specially trained to meet the unique needs of children who have entered the child welfare system at no fault of their own. Appointed by judges as the Guardian ad Litem, CASA volunteers protect the best interests of their assigned children in court and in collaboration with the myriad of professionals working on the case. A CASA volunteer ensures their assigned children's well-being remains paramount.

Unlike often overtaxed caseworkers, volunteer advocates typically work with one child at a time. This allows CASA volunteers to provide each child with the individualized attention they need and deserve. By forming personal connections with these children, CASA volunteers can better understand their specific needs and make the best recommendations to the court for appropriate services, interventions and placements.

CASA's commitment to serving these vulnerable children extends beyond the courtroom, as volunteers often become trusted mentors and positive role models in their lives. CASA of Collin County has been a beacon of hope for children impacted by abuse and neglect with unduplicated advocacy for over 30 years.

Sierra (4 years old) and Casey (6 years old) entered the child welfare system after their biological mother passed away and their father was struggling with substance abuse. Sierra and Casey were placed with a relative to ensure their safety. During this time, their father would attend supervised visits under the influence, failed weekly drug tests and was not completing courses ordered by the court. The girls and their family were losing hope until Linda, a CASA volunteer, was assigned to their case. Linda developed a trustful bond and became someone the girls could confide in. She was a resource and support for their family, and eventually their father. She became a light in the girls’ lives when they felt all hope was lost.

The court granted Sierra and Casey’s dad the opportunity to turn his life around. Through the support of his daughters, his family, and CASA volunteer, Linda, he was motivated to maintain his sobriety, hold a job, and was able to fight for his family. After continued success, dad reunited with Sierra and Casey, and mended family relationships that were once strained and broken. CASA volunteer, Linda, remains a family friend.

Child abuse prevention is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of individuals, communities and organizations. CASA of Collin County needs your support to continue making a positive impact in our community: learn more about becoming a volunteer advocate, make a tax-deductible donation or volunteer your time in other single events, by yourself or with a group.

For over 30 years, CASA of Collin County has provided unduplicated court-appointed advocacy for children removed from their homes and placed into the child welfare system due to abuse and neglect. Court Appointed Special Advocates is a national association in the United States that supports and promotes court-appointed advocates for abused or neglected children. CASA are volunteers from the community who complete training that has been provided by the state or local CASA office.

A Tale of Resilience, Family Values, and the Birth of Marinas Cleaning Service LLC

Imagine delving into the stories of closely-knit Mexican families who have embarked on the journey of immigration to the United States. Within these stories, a recurring piece of wisdom echoes across generations, a gem of guidance handed down by our abuelas: "Aunque seamos pobres tenemos que ser limpios," translating to "Even though we are poor, we must be clean." This mantra is a testament to the pride instilled in us by our grandmothers. It is a call to present ourselves with dignity, irrespective of our origins or destinations.

Born on December 6, 1930, in Jalisco, Mexico, Marina Castillo witnessed the harsh realities of the Great Depression. It was a tumultuous time marked by labor shortages, food scarcities, and political unrest in Mexico and the United States. Marina and her compatriots exhibited resilience in the face of adversity, forging a path forward.

Marina, a mother to twelve children, was not just a caretaker of her family, but a beacon of values. Her teachings emphasized the importance of hard work and always putting forth one's best effort. She lovingly taught each child to cook, clean and

nurture their home with love and respect. Beyond motherhood, Marina was a dedicated wife, sister and friend. Her essence included values of excellence, charity, honesty, and a contagious sense of fun.

With her pursuit of excellence, honesty and a knack for infusing joy, Marina left an indelible mark on her family. The enduring legacy of this powerful and loving matriarch did not end with her children. It cascaded through the family line, reaching grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In Mexican tradition, the departed are not truly gone; they live on through stories and the values they tenderly instill.

As Marina's children expanded their families, the invaluable lessons learned from their mother persisted. Rocio, one of Marina's daughters, embraced the path of solo cleaning almost nine years ago, mirroring her mother's hard-working example. Driven by the desire to provide for her only child, Fernanda, Rocio dedicated herself to perfecting cleaning routines and techniques.

As Fernanda matured, witnessing the impact of solo cleaning on Rocio's well-being, and desiring to secure her mother's retirement, she made a pivotal decision in 2022—to establish an LLC. CL: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER?

Officer Delio: I always knew that I was going to be in a community service position. I wanted to be able to stand up for those that can’t protect themselves. I was a firefighter before becoming a member of the Allen police department.

CL: TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY LIFE.

Officer Delio: My wife and I have been married for over 20 years, and we have 4 kids. We moved from Texas back home to New York for a while to get therapy for our oldest daughter who has a rare genetic disorder.

CL:  WHAT KIND OF SERVICES DOES YOUR DIVISION OFFER?

Officer Delio: I am now in Community Relations. We offer crime prevention services to the public for free. We want to help people protect themselves from both physical and cyber attacks.

CL:  WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?

Officer Delio: I enjoy teaching people how to protect themselves by using the training that I’ve received. I lead free, community workouts on Wednesdays and Fridays at 6 a.m. at Cottonwood Creek church. Offering these classes has helped me maintain my physical strength and do what I love most, serve the community.

Enjoy a Comforting Taste of Home

Indulge in the nostalgic comfort of a classic Chicken Pot Pie, a dish that combines tender chicken, mixed vegetables and a creamy sauce beneath a flaky crust.

ingredients:

• 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded or diced

• 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)

• 1 small onion, finely chopped

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 3 tablespoons butter

• 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

• 1 cup chicken broth

• 1 cup milk

• 1 teaspoon dried thyme

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)

directions:

Mix 2 cups cooked chicken, 1 cup frozen mixed veggies, sautéed onion, and garlic in a creamy sauce of butter, flour, chicken broth, and milk seasoned with thyme, salt, and pepper. Place the mixture into a pie dish lined with a refrigerated pie crust. Top it with another crust, seal the edges, and bake at 400°F for 30-35 minutes until golden. Let it cool briefly before serving. This versatile recipe allows for personal touches—add herbs, spices or substitute veggies.

ingredients

• 2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap

• 1 lemon rind, zested

• 3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds

• 2 tablespoons of honey

• 15 drops of lavender essential oil

• 6 drops of lemon essential oil

• jar or bowl for melting soap base

• Silicone mold

directions

Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn.  If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.

Student OF THE MONTH

At four years old, some people were playing with wooden blocks and dolls, but Avery Stafford had already started dancing ballet at the Hathaway Academy of Ballet in Plano. By the time she was nine years old, she discovered that she had a passion for the art form, and by the age of twelve, she moved to the Ballet Academy of Texas and starred as Clara in the Nutcracker.

Her mother, Victoria, homeschooled her from the very beginning, so Avery was able to focus full-time on ballet and have a tailored schedule for her schooling. Now, she spends her days refining her skillset at the Dallas Conservatory, while she completes her 10th grade year in an online school program.

The most impressive thing about Avery's career is that although she was diagnosed with scoliosis, she continues to pursue her passion and only sheds her back brace to perform and train.

We can't wait for her to grace the stage in her upcoming performance of Swan Lake at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas. In our eyes, there is no better place for Avery than on the stages of the world!

AVERY STAFFORD:

To date, Avery's proudest accomplishment was being named a Young Arts winner for 2024. In this exclusive program, she will be able to earn support for the rest of her career through private grants and mentorship programs, which is something any budding artist across all disciplines would appreciate.
