Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.

Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to try new styles or perhaps explore familiar ones.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

When I met Angi Burns a little over a year ago, we sat down with steaming cups in hand at Armor Coffee in The Village at Allen. I was looking to do a little copy editing work, and she was preparing to launch the publication you now hold in your hands. I imagined myself carefully reading each editorial in search of comma splices and mechanical errors. But within moments of meeting Angi, I was enthralled by her vision for Allen City Lifestyle. I knew I had to be a part of making it a reality.

Like many of you, my social media feed is increasingly full of anger and despair, punctuated only occasionally by a Pedro Pascal clip or cat meme. It's easy to believe that what we see on the news and in our feeds is the sum total of reality. Thankfully, it's not.

Angi's vision for Allen City Lifestyle has always been to create a publication that raises awareness about the wonderful people and organizations in our community dedicated to making Allen and surrounding areas better. In serving as editor, I've chased down dangling modifiers and fixed spelling errors as I expected, but, more than anything, I've been inspired.

Each month, we take the opportunity to tell you, our beloved readers, about the remarkable people in our community. From first responders to stellar students to nonprofits, we share the stories of those devoting their lives to supporting others and making our little corner of the world a safe and welcoming place. Moreover, we get to share with you about the business owners and leaders in our community. PEOPLE'S IMPACT NETWORK

The People's Impact Network (or PIN) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes change towards greater ecological integrity in the fashion industry by prolonging the lifecycle of materials, improving the value of timeless garments, reducing the amount of waste, and, thus, mitigating harm to the environment.

Ethnic wear such as sarees, salwars, ghagras, and fusion outfits can often be far more expensive than other types of clothing. This may deter some people from purchasing it, especially if they do not wear it on a regular basis. Additionally, ethnic wear may not be as readily available as other types of clothing. And since ethnic wear is often a form of cultural heritage, the former's abandonment can damage the latter's influence and make it more difficult for future generations to learn about it.

Namitha Nayak, an analyst by profession, started PIN in 2014 with the mission of preventing ethnic clothing from ending up in landfills and promoting a TRIPLE WIN:

• Donors make extra space in their closets and homes by giving away used ethnic clothing

• Buyers receive access to a vast variety of sarees and other ethnic wear at very reasonable prices

• Nonprofit organizations who receive funds through Saree Strong gain greater benefit from the generosity of Saree Strong members

PIN has three main programs: Saree Strong, PIN-Ed, and Voice of World.

Saree Strong is a saree resale program that sells gently used, donated sarees at low prices. The proceeds from the sales are used to support PIN's other programs.

PIN-Ed is an education series on various topics, including languages and technology, that is offered to students of all ages by volunteer teachers who are specialists in their fields.

Voice of World is a forum for individuals to share their experiences, knowledge, and skills. They offer workshops, talks, and other events to help people connect and learn from each other.

With the help of a team of over 20 volunteers, PIN has supported many local nonprofits and committed over $100,000 to community causes. PIN offers grants to local small nonprofits with missions of community service. They believe that everyone has the power to make a difference, and they are committed to supporting organizations that make a positive impact on the world.

Ranjani Nangia, Mushtari Nagpurwala, Shehnaz Nagpurwala, Kalai Krishnamurthy, Madhavi Nair, and Shailesh Shirvaikar are the current board members of PIN.

PIN was recognized and honored with the National Autism Association of North Texas (NAANT) Angel Community Award.

Furniture for Your Windows

We Texans know that everything here runs big, including homes with large windows. Covering those windows can be a big task, too.

Fortunately, there are shutters and all kinds of shades (cellular, woven, roman, honeycomb and sheer, to name a few). Shutters are timeless in nature; they’re energy efficient and help keep the effects of the Texas heat to a minimum. However, shades are softer than shutters — they have different opacities, textures and colors.

Whatever you choose, window coverings can enhance the functionality and elevate the look of your home. For example, there are light filtering shades that help with UV protection, as well as light enhancing shades that amplify natural light into homes. And if too much light is the problem, especially for light or daytime sleepers, then try room darkening blinds. Custom blinds for angled windows, skylights, or arched half-moon windows can upgrade the aesthetic of a home.

Whatever you choose, window coverings can enhance the functionality and elevate the look of your home.

Window coverings can also improve your living environment, especially when it comes to privacy. Shutters and blinds can mitigate privacy issues by giving you control over your view space.

Shannon offers complimentary consultations to help her clients develop their own sense of style and comfort. For example, she often recommends drapery panels to enhance the aesthetics of a room. Draperies soften some of the bulkiness that come along with shutters; they also “raise” the room since they are mounted just shy of the ceiling.

With so much variety on hand, the natural question for Shannon was if she had a favorite – and indeed she does! Her favorite is the banded shade; a popular choice because it’s so versatile and the only kind of shade that can be partially open or closed in the up or down position — in other words, it has the most functionality and yet can beautify a room instantly.

When she’s not helping clients, Shannon spends her time raising awareness about child cancer after her granddaughter, now three years old, endured some very tough days as a baby. In September, Shannon will donate a percentage of all her proceeds to this worthy cause.

Why You and Your

If a spouse dies without a Will and has children from a prior relationship, under Texas law, the deceased spouse’s entire half of their community property, including the house, cars, and any other property, passes to their children from outside the marriage. The surviving spouse does not inherit any of the deceased spouse’s property in that case. Therefore, the surviving spouse could end up owning their home with the deceased spouse’s children.

BRIGHT AND BOLD COLORS

This season, bright colors such as hot pink and kelly green are trending. I know this can be difficult for my neutral-loving ladies, so I always recommend starting small. Choose a fun, colorful earring or add a bold clutch to brighten up your look. You can also have fun with your shoes by adding a colorful heel or sandal to a dress or denim outfit.

FLORALS

From floral midi dresses to feminine floral blouses, this season is all about flower power. Choose a flowy floral skirt and pair it with your favorite knotted tee and sandals for an effortless look. Tip: If wearing a dress with a large floral print, try adding a denim jacket, light cardigan or woven belt to add texture and break up the print.

TWO-PIECE SETS

From casual jogger sets to feminine tiered skirts and puff-sleeved tops, two-piece sets are everywhere! What I adore about twopiece sets is that you can wear them in multiple ways. Wear it as a set or take the top and pair it with denim, or take the skirt and pair it with a tee and light jacket or blazer. Two pieces, but multiple ways to wear them!

90S-INSPIRED DENIM

Let me be clear — I LOVE a skinny jean and always will! But the 90s denim trend is having a moment and if you want to embrace it, here are a couple of tips: Choose a fit that is high-rise with a more relaxed fit through the leg. You want the jean to fall right above the ankle bone. This is slimming and flattering to the eye. Pair with a strappy heel, sneaker or slide.

Declutter Your Closet

Edit down your closet. Ask yourself these three things: Do you still like it? Does it fit within reason? Is it still in good condition? If the answer is no, it’s time to donate or sell that item. Keep a donation basket in your closet to help you stay on track.

Buy something new, get rid of something old. Each time you buy a new item, get rid of an item in your closet. This manages the chaos of having too many options in your closet. We only wear about 20% of the items in our closet, so make a list before shopping and shop with intention.

When it comes to organization, having a system in place is key. Utilize the entire space for your items. For example, buy closed bins for out of season or travel items and place them on the top shelf. Utilize the back of the door or any blank walls with hooks for hats or a jewelry organizer. Get rid of items that are taking up space in your closet like shoe boxes, sentimental items, and bulky items like luggage. Store them elsewhere if you can. The two best things you can do to save on space and have an organized closet is to invest in all matching slim velvet hangers. This frees up more space in your closet and looks great, too. And finally, add matching labeled baskets for folded items to keep everything nicely organized and in specific categories.

This quote captures the core “why” behind Marianna Sennour’s dedication to community service. She truly believes that citizens are the strength of any community and that they can have the biggest impact through volunteering their time and talents. The community Marianna wants to live in values the need for providing assistance to neighbors in need, which is why All Community Outreach is dear to her heart. ACO is where she first began her community service journey starting as a food pantry volunteer in 2014, before joining the Development Council in 2016 and being appointed to the Board of Directors in March of 2020, where she continues to serve. She is passionate about ACO’s mission of “preventing homelessness and hunger while helping clients build financial stability,” recognizing that we are all potentially one crisis away from needing the services of an organization like ACO.

The community Marianna wants to live in values the arts and literacy, so she has served in various capacities with Friends of the Allen Public Library and the Allen Arts Alliance. She currently serves on the City of Allen Public Art Committee. The community Marianna wants to live in values public education. Her contributions to helping build a strong community in this area include past participation on AISD Project Kids committees and the SOAR 2030 community strategic planning committee.

And, finally, the community Marianna wants to live in sees the strength in our differences. She works to bring people together across these differences through a fledgling community interfaith initiative and as co-organizer of the 2024 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Appreciation Day Service.

Marianna and her husband, Youcef, have two Allen High School graduates, a son, Amin, who now lives in Boston working as a software engineer and a daughter, Leila, who is an accounting major at the University of Iowa. First Responder of the Month

Michelle Peel is an Allen police sergeant assigned to the patrol services division. The reason Peel enjoys her time on the force is because she is a service-minded person who loves being there for others in her community.

“There’s never an absence of entertainment in my profession!” Peel jokingly says. “We meet lots of people who have lots of personalities. I love the people and the laughing.”

As a child Peel aspired to become a marine biologist, however, she decided to join the Army which allowed her to still use her grit, tenacity and resilience.

“I have experience in leadership positions, and because of my military career, becoming a police officer also seemed like a natural transition,” Peel shares.

On Peel’s off days you can find her running, playing with her dogs or reading which helps whenever her days on the line are busy or hectic.

“The shift hours can definitely take a toll on family life, so you have to learn how to balance work and home, “ Peel adds. “We see and deal with a lot of things over the course of our career that many people don't, so it can be a challenge to deal with that.”

Peel’s personal goal is to use her experience to help others figure out what their goals are and help them achieve their dreams.

“I’m honored and grateful to share a little of my story,” Peel voices.

Sopapilla Cheesecake

INGREDIENTS:

• Two packages Pillsbury Crescent Rolls

• 12 ounces Philadelphia Cream Cheese (softened)

• 3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon sugar

• 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1/2 cup melted butter

METHOD:

01. Preheat oven to 375. In a medium mixing bowl, combine 12 ounces of cream cheese, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Mix well.

02. Grease the bottom and sides of a 9x13 glass baking dish. Open one package of

crescent rolls and unroll it into the bottom of the dish without separating the rolls from one another. Stretch to completely fill the bottom of the pan. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the crescent rolls in the pan and then top with the second package of crescent rolls, stretching the dough to cover the cream cheese.

03. Pour 1/2 cup of melted butter over the top.

04. Mix together 3/4 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Sprinkle on top of the butter.

05. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top appears dry and slightly crispy. Turn off the oven, but leave the cheesecake in for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from oven and cool for an additional 30 minutes.

06. Cut into squares and serve with your choice of a drizzle of agave sweetener or honey, whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

07. Store leftovers in the refrigerator.

THE little BLACK DRESS

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straight-lined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.

“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.

Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.

If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”

In a world that often expects us to conform, one Lovejoy High School student is forging her own path. Lyn Jones, a rising sophomore, is a passionate, confident, and determined activist and community volunteer.

A straight ‘A’ student who’s active in dance and competitive cheer, Lyn has already made her mark within the community. As an activist, Lyn is a leader, encouraging fellow students and community members to use their voices to speak out against violence and injustice in our area and our nation.

You might think she wants to be a lawyer, or maybe judge. But you’d be wrong.

Determined to make a lasting impact in her own way, she wants to work in real estate because it offers her the perfect platform to make a difference in people's lives. When asked about her surprising career choice, Lyn shares, "I love houses and I love helping people. Both are about creating opportunities and promoting equality."

What sets her apart is not only her fervor for activism. “I’m determined to live authentically and advocate for what I’m passionate about,” she says.

What is she passionate about? Human rights, women’s rights, and equality. “Equality is something we need more of in this world,” she explains.

Her motto, "Whatever you do, do it with confidence," encapsulates the spirit with which she faces every challenge. "I believe in embracing who you truly are and pursuing your passions with unwavering confidence," she shares. “Speak your words even if your voice shakes.”

Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world.”

As Lyn’s story continues to unfold, it’s certain that she will continue to create that change.
