Kids & Pets Make Life Worth Living!

Being a mother has been my greatest achievement in life. I am blessed to have three incredible children who make me proud on a daily basis. Watching my daughters grow into admirable young adults who care about their community and strive to make the world a better place is humbling. Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow, they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. It is bittersweet as they grow up and prepare to leave the nest, but I know they are going to do amazing things.

We recently took a family vacation to Universal Studios in Orlando, and I was able to share in the laughter, playfulness, and simple joy of their youth. Although my girls are embarking on adulthood, we all embraced the opportunity to be childlike and carefree with my youngest who is ten years their junior. It was a magical time and a memory I will not soon forget.

As my girls transition out of the house, we often turn to our four-legged family members for comfort. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. My son, although he hates feeding and cleaning up after them, adores our personal zoo. The bond between kids and their furry friends is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.

Our dogs, Artemis and Hulk, supply us with endless entertainment. Hulk, our seven pound Chorkie, thinks he is a “big dog” protecting the household while Artie, the rambunctious mini Australian shepherd mix, runs amuck attempting to catch the flames from the fire pit and all things that fly. Vinny and Rocket, our loving cats, are our snuggle buddies who are known to the entire neighborhood. Rocket loves to garden with the couple down the street while Vinny heads up the cat crew with his buddy next door, Louie.

Our children and animals bring a unique balance of responsibility and reward to our lives. I know that not everyone desires to be a parent and there are people who are not animal lovers, but the presence of kids and pets in the community adds to the quality of life for all of us. This issue highlights local resources for kids and pets.

Enjoy!

First Responder of the Month

Dr. Jenna Cash is a physician at Lone Star Kids Care in Allen. She grew up in Mesquite and attended the University of North Texas for her undergraduate studies as well as UNT’s Health Science Center for medical school. She completed her residency at Penn State Children’s Hospital.

“I wanted to be a teacher when I was young, then I did my 7th grade careers project on a career in public relations,” Cash recounts. “I didn’t get interested in medicine until high school AP biology.”

As soon as Cash realized that she wanted to become a physician, she knew it would involve pediatrics because she has always loved working with children.

“I love talking to 5-year-olds; they say the funniest things,” Cash shares. “I love seeing the babies, and helping

new parents. I also really enjoy talking to the teens — really all ages!”

Cash is challenged on a daily basis by the hurdles that come with different medical insurances and policies. However, she makes it a personal goal to be a trustworthy and knowledgeable resource for patients and families.

When she is not in the clinic you can find Cash at the park with her children or volunteering at their school. She also spends time at the lake or at Vacation Bible Study at her church, or anywhere else (as she puts it) “kid related!”

Cash feels honored to be named First Responder of the Month, and she gives thanks and acknowledgement to her family and friends who have always been “incredibly supportive.”

Rawr!

The Dinosaur Company, a part of Billings Productions, has been sparking awe with their animatronic dinosaurs since 2003. A family owned, minority, and woman run business, they are passionate about educating the public on both prehistoric creatures and conservation of the ones roaming the earth today.

Their mission is to inspire, and with that goal in mind, in 2013, the subsidiaries "The Dinosaur Company" and "The Giant Bug Company" were established to celebrate the variety of products they create. In 2019, they unveiled another set of creatures: “The Primal Predators.” This collection features many large prehistoric creatures from the Ice Age.

A small company with big ideas for the future, The Dinosaur Company is a world leader in the design, development, and production of animatronic exhibits for zoos, museums, and theme parks. “There’s value in how much kids engage with seeing a dinosaur in front of them in real life,” says Lauren Billings, VP of Operations.

At their Allen location, they build the animatronic dinosaurs, prehistoric predators, and giant bugs, as well as house the corporate headquarters, and host the community for tours any day of the week. Tours offer a chance to see the production in action.

“You can’t do that anywhere else! We’re the only place in America that builds animatronic dinosaurs,” Billings exclaims with a pride and joy that’s contagious. “The company is unique in that it combines fabrication with education so there’s something for everybody to enjoy. We’re a little bit of everything!”

In 2019, they committed to becoming a more community-inclusive company and started giving tours of their facility to the public. In February 2021, they opened their brand-new, state-of-theart facility in the heart of Allen. They offer a wide range of tours and workshops for any age where they explain the history of the company, what type of people work there, and how a dinosaur is built.

From hands-on Dino Expeditions to BYOB STEAM Animatronic Tours, there’s something for everyone. Prices range from $8 – $15 per ticket, depending on the activity. Ask about discounts for students, military, senior citizens, first responders, scout troops, and nonprofits.

DINOSAURS LIVE!

For the 16th year, The Dinosaur Company and The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary will be joining together to feature the dinosaur exhibit on September 2nd, giving families a DINO-mite walk back in time. Encounter the 46-foot T-Rex and ten new life-size animatronic dinosaurs along the nature trails featuring a variety of dinosaurs from the famous Tyrannosaurus Rex to the Muttaburrasaurus.

See the dinosaurs move and hear them roar! Each dinosaur is fitted with its own electronic brain and powered by a pneumatic system to produce smooth and realistic movements. Situated in a natural setting, you can let your imagination run wild as you explore the blast from the past.

Play areas and stationary photo-op will be available as well. This year, the exhibit also features an outdoor fossil dig.

Bringing the prehistoric past to life through their events, tours, and gift shop, The Dinosaur Company strives to nurture curiosity for all creatures. This summer, a visit to The Dinosaur Company should be at the very tricera-TOP of your list, you’ll have a RAWR-some good time!

Nonprofit of the Month: Kids Edition

Leia's Kids

Childhood cancer claimed Leia Hunt’s ability to see out of her left eye, but it also gave her a vision. At the age of 18, over a decade after first being diagnosed with retinoblastoma at the age of two, the childhood cancer survivor founded Leia’s Kids, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Leia’s Kids was born from her heart to love and serve children battling cancer. As a survivor, Leia knows the trials and tribulations children and their families face, and she desires to be a voice of hope. While doctors, nurses, and other medical professions are equipped to care for patients’ physical needs, sick children and their families need more than medical care.

That’s where Leia’s Kids comes in.

Each child nominated to be one of Leia’s Kids receives a $1,000 donation from the foundation. They are also each celebrated at their own Crown-A-Kid party, a special

event that celebrates, encourages, and uplifts children and their families in the midst of their battle against cancer.

Leia battled and defeated retinoblastoma not just once, but twice. She sees her survival as a testament of God’ goodness and is determined to do all she can to glorify him with her life. In addition to founding her nonprofit, she is a podcast host, inspirational speaker, and the author of “My Battle Plan Journal,” a grief journal, and the newly released "Princess Marygold and the Royal Tea Party" which tells the story of Princess Marygold, the very first princess childhood cancer survivor. In this story, Princess Marygold and her best friend, Peppermint the Pig, help twin girls find their special purpose.

To learn more about Leia’s Kids and how you can get involved, visit leiaskids.org, email info@leiaskids.org, or find the nonprofit on social media @leias_kids.

Nonprofit of the Month: Pets Edition

TEXAS COALITION FOR ANIMAL PROTECTION

Texas currently ranks number one for the highest number of animals euthanized in U.S. animal shelters, but a local organization aims to change that. Texas Coalition for Animal Protection is a nonprofit providing low-cost spay, neuter, and wellness services to cats and dogs. TCAP's mission is to end pet overpopulation and euthanasia in Texas shelters by providing greater access to affordable spay and neuter services — dismantling barriers to care.

PET CARE | LOCAL SERVICES
ARTICLE BY TIFFANY DITTO

"TCAP is about ending the euthanasia of perfectly adoptable pets in our city shelters," said Stacey Schumacher, TCAP Founder and Executive Director. "It's also about ensuring pets can remain in their loving homes by making preventative wellness care affordable. If we prevent costly illnesses and accidental litters, we can limit the number of pets surrendered to city shelters due to economic constraints."

The eight-location nonprofit has served the greater Allen community since the early 2000s, and in 2015 opened its Allen clinic on Greenville Ave. Last year, the Allen location provided around 10,000 spays and neuters to community pets. If each animal had an average of three litters, that equates to 30,000 litters prevented.

Beyond sterilizations, the organization offers low-cost wellness services such as vaccines, heartworm testing and prevention, feline combo testing, and more.

With inflation on the rise for everyone, TCAP works to keep its prices as low as possible, supplementing the cost of some services with its operating budget and community donations."

This year, support from the community donating items we use daily like copy paper, puppy pads, newspaper, and gently used towels has helped tremendously," Schumacher added. "Without the support of pet lovers in our communities, none of this would be possible."

Sterilizations for pets at TCAP start at $35. The organization requires an appointment for all sterilizations. However, vaccine and wellness services are performed on a walk-in basis during the organization's service hours. Rabies vaccines are only $5. TCAP's Allen Clinic at 111 N. Greenville Ave. offers these from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Make Your Spouse (or Children) Stop Nagging You

Your spouse is right to push you to draft a will. Did you know: if you have children from a prior marriage, and you die without a will, Texas law says that your current spouse will only inherit a fraction of your property, while those children will inherit the rest. Do you want that for your spouse? Also, your children are right to push you for a will, too.

The Goddard School of Allen (West) Celebrates Adventure and Exploration

The Goddard School®, a nationally acclaimed early childhood education franchise, is dedicated to nurturing the extraordinary in every child. With more than 600 schools serving more than 90,000 children across the country, Goddard Schools focus on exploration, learning and social-emotional growth to build the foundation for a remarkable future for each individual child.

The Goddard School of Allen (West), TX, opened the doors of their brand-new state-of-the-art facility in June 2021 to provide families in the Allen community with a warm, caring, and safe environment that supports their child’s individual social, emotional, and academic development. The play-based learning experience offered at The Goddard School uses the most current, academically-endorsed methods in early childhood education to spark a lifelong love of learning through a child’s natural curiosity. Just as importantly, the targeted curriculum focused on social-emotional development teaches children life

skills, such as self-management, kindness, collaboration, relationship skills, and social awareness.

Students at The Goddard School experience Life Lesson Library, The Goddard School’s proprietary targeted curriculum built around great works of children’s literature focusing on social and emotional learning. Books featured in Life Lesson Library are carefully curated by early childhood education experts and Goddard teachers, and feature relatable characters and stories used to authentically teach and connect with others.

In addition to an academic approach backed by expert knowledge, data-driven insight and unwavering compassion for growing minds, The Goddard School of Allen (West) places a focus on their enrichment programs, which include yoga, music, sign language, handwriting and Spanish. Additionally, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) is heavily incorporated into their project-based learning by instilling the children’s natural creativity to plan, design, and build.

Letty Gomar, owner of The Goddard School of Allen (West), opened her early childhood education center in 2021 to fulfill her passion for high-quality STEAM-based early childhood education.

ENJOYING SUMMER

In the moments between fishing in our pond and swimming in the pool, our family will celebrate birthdays and have outdoor parties. True to form, I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way. My beach ball garland is a spin-off of the traditional balloon garland. Everyone uses balloon garlands… so let’s make one out of beach balls instead! Everyone serves a birthday cake… how about one carved out of a watermelon for a crazy twist?? I hope you join me in the making of these fun additions to a party!

Beach Ball Garland

Have you ever noticed that when blown up, beach balls have a little plastic loop that forms where they are blown up and sealed?  It makes for the perfect place to string twine through and use as an outdoor “balloon” garland! String it up, add some extra beach balls to the pool or yard and you have all the party decorations you need!

Materials

• 2 packs of assorted sized beach balls (assorted 20”, 16” and 12” for a total of 36)

• 1 pack of mini beach balls (5” sized, total of 25)

• Thin rope or twine

• Air pump

Instructions

1. Using an air pump, blow up all the beach balls... It takes a while!

2. Arrange inflated beach balls in a line on the ground, alternating sizes as you go.

3. Starting on one end, thread your string or twine through the blow loop of each beach ball until you reach the end.

4. Tie each end of your beach ball garland to a post or tack to a wall.

Watermelon Cake

A cake that you could eat for breakfast! Made only of fruit and (if you want to go real crazy) some fresh mint and whipped cream too. A few years ago we started making watermelon cakes for our summer birthday celebrations due to one of our little ones suffering from food allergies. In order to make a cake that even she could enjoy, the watermelon cake was born in our lives. Even if you don’t have family or guests with food allergies, this cake is a thriller and loved by all!

Ingredients

• 2 large watermelons

• Assortment of berries and fruit

• 4 wooden skewers

• Toothpicks

• Whipped cream (optional)

• Fresh mint (optional)

Instructions

1. Prep both watermelons by cutting off the rinds and sculpting to create a cylinder shape with a flat top and bottom. Make the bottom cylinder bigger and the top cylinder slightly smaller.

2. Stack your smaller watermelon on top of the larger using wooden skewers to support the center.

3. Use assorted berries and fruit to decorate the outside of your watermelon cake. For the sides of the cake, use toothpicks to help the berries stay in place.

4. Serve alone or with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.

Bento Box Pinwheel Sandwiches

If you’re looking for a delicious, nutritious, and colorful addition to your child’s bento box (or your own!) look no further than our recipe for pinwheel sandwiches. Totally customizable, these yummy swirls are sure to delight even the pickiest of eaters.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 large tortilla, any flavor (burrito size works best)

• 3-4 slices of deli meat such as ham or turkey

• 2 slices of cheese or 2-3 tablespoons of shredded cheese

• 1/2 cup of softened cream cheese (mayo, hummus, etc. may also be used)

• 1/2 cup of your favorite greens

METHOD:

Lay your tortilla flat and spread with a thin layer of cream cheese or mayo. Next, layer on 3-4 slices of deli meat followed by 2 slices of cheese or 2-3 tablespoons of shredded cheese. Top with your favorite salad greens.

To roll, start with the edge closest to you by folding over approximately 1" of the tortilla so it sticks, and then roll it up as tightly as possible, tucking in the fillings as you go. Once rolled, slice it into 1” wide pinwheels and place them in a bento box with an ice pack to keep them cool. Add a separate cup of ranch, mustard, or your favorite dip. Enjoy!

VARIATIONS:

California Club: use mayo as your spread and layer in turkey, crispy bacon, chopped tomato, leaf lettuce, and avocado

Greek Salad: use hummus as your spread and layer in feta cheese, chopped tomatoes and red bell peppers, sliced Kalamata olives, and baby spinach

Sun-dried Tomato: use either a sun-dried tomato or spinach tortilla and spread with cream cheese before layering with sundried tomatoes, baby spinach, fresh basil leaves, minced garlic, and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese

Backyard Chickens

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages.

There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?

Things To Consider Before Getting Chickens:

First, check local town ordinances to ensure that keeping chickens is even allowed in your neighborhood or if there is a limit to the number of chickens you can keep at once.

Make sure you have the space for a henhouse or a full-size chicken coop. It has to hold a feeder and water containers, a roosting area, and a nest box for every three hens. A proper coop should be large enough that you can stand in it to gather eggs and shovel manure comfortably, but a simple hen house can be quite a bit smaller. Plus, any housing must be sturdy enough to keep your chickens safe from all the predators out there. Gorgeous coops are aplenty on places like Pinterest if you’re building your own, but many pre-made options are available through various farm supply stores as well.

Chickens need food and water daily. Feed is about $20 per 50-pound bag, but prices vary depending on your location and the quality of the feed. How long a bag lasts depends on the number of chickens you have.

Hens will lay eggs through Spring and Summer and into the Fall, as long as they have 12 to 14 hours of daylight. Expect to collect eggs daily, or even twice a day.

Everything you need to get started on your backyard coop.

Student of the Month

Sharon Cho, a senior at Allen High School, is pushing the envelope and charting new territories. She is the founder and president of two organizations, International Cultures and Relations Association (ICRA) and Kotudent.

Last year, ICRA created a fundraiser called "Love for Las Americas." ICRA members worked together to create Korean and Chinese knot bracelets. They sold 96 bracelets and donated the funds raised to Las Americas, a nonprofit that provides free and low-cost legal services to immigrants and refugees in West Texas and New Mexico.

Kotudent is an online program that teaches the English language to students K-12. “I created Kotudent because I wanted to help my peers,” Sharon shares. “I first came to the U.S. from South Korea in Kindergarten, went back after a year, and returned to the U.S. in 5th grade…I caught up with the language fairly quickly and didn’t need ESL after elementary school.”

During her junior year, Sharon maintained six AP classes while participating in extracurricular activities such as choir, ICRA and more. She gives thanks to her peers and teachers for helping her into her senior year.

“I’ve always done my best in school,” she recounts. “But when I got the email saying I am the Student of the Month, joy washed over me and made me want to try even harder. A goal I have for the next school year is to not be too affected by senioritis.”

Sharon’s ambitions have not only encouraged her peers at school but also her parents. Her mother, Mikyung Park, shares that Sharon will keep helping and serving others by becoming a civil engineer or a lawyer.

“No matter what she decides to do in the future, I am confident that she will use her abilities to benefit others,” says Park. “I am so proud of Sharon!”

What She’s Watching: The Harry Potter series

Her Social Media Feed: "It’s filled with cooking videos!"

Her Hobbies: “Filming and editing YouTube videos, playing the piano and singing.”
