Bring on the Summer Fun!

I hope this letter finds you lying by the pool or lake and soaking in some much-needed Vitamin D.

As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of summer. There’s just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement and adventure.

Sure, fall has my favorite flavors and scents, winter has its cozy charms, and I can’t deny the beauty of spring, but when the summer solstice rolls around, I’m more than ready for the long, languid days sitting by the pool or floating on a boat.

The pages in our Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of this season in Allen.  And even if summer doesn’t mean three months of summer vacation anymore because we’re, you know, adults, we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off our ultimate summer bucket list and curling up with a new favorite beach read.

My family loves to watch the fireworks at Celebration Park each year. Whether we are hanging out at the Hydro Park or enjoying the plethora of activities at the Allen Public Library, the summer is full of fun and excitement.

Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will encourage you to gather your friends and family to explore exciting events and experiences in Allen and Fairview this summer!

SUMMER SWIMMING is for

THE BEST SWIMMING HOLES IN TEXAS

TRAVEL JOURNAL | TRAVEL
18

Growing up, summer was a new swimsuit from the Lands’ End catalog, swimming lessons at the natatorium, and a family trip to Neal’s Lodges on the Frio River.

On an early July morning, my brother and I would sit in blearyeyed silence in the backseat, forbidden to open the special bag of car toys until we were “on the road.”

I’m still not exactly sure what that means.

Texas topography is unlike any other state in that it seems to borrow from every other state. East Texas is green and lush with trees that look like trees ought to—tall and strong and shady like those in Arkansas. Houston is swampy, the air thick and wet like New Orleans. West Texas is flatter and hotter than a cast iron skillet and resembles desolate stretches of New Mexico, but makes up for its lack of elevation in sunsets.

The Hill Country is a wonder.

As we neared Neal’s each summer, flat, straight highway melted into rolling roads that edged around hills and dipped to cross low bridges. Depth gauges yards ahead of these narrow bridges let us know what the year’s vacation was likely to bring.

Water running over the bridges meant we’d sail down the Frio on our float trip the next day. In drier years, my dad would slow and point at the river through the trees—drawing our attention to the feet between last year’s banks and this year’s levels. Low years meant walking as much as we floated, gathering our inner tubes like ladies hoisting up black rubber skirts to wade further downstream until the water deepened, then dropping our tubes and settling in to float to our favorite swimming hole.

There’s no doubt about it, summer is for swimming. And in Texas, there’s nothing better than a swimming hole. Here are four of the best our state has to offer.

KRAUSE SPRINGS

Located in Spicewood, TX, about 30 miles west of Austin, this beloved camping and swimming site boasts countless natural wonders to explore and enjoy. The 115 acre property, which has been privately owned by the Krause Family for over 50 years, is listed on the National Registry of Historical Sites and is home to 32 springs. Several of these refreshing springs feed the man made pool and the natural pool which flows into Lake Travis. During hot Texas summers there’s nothing as revitalizing as a dip in the springs. Additionally, the property offers tent sites and RV sites if you plan to stay the night. For more information, visit krausesprings.net

NEAL’S LODGES

Located in Concan, TX on the Frio River, this cool, blue, spring fed pool is available exclusively for guests of Neal’s Lodges. Guests can pick out a tube and catch a ride to a drop off point miles upstream, then spend the day floating back to the welcome waters of the swimming hole. River rapids punctuate the trip, and stretches of tranquil waters float troubles away. Back at Neal’s swimming hole, magnificent bald cypress trees shade the banks and proffer rope swings for adventurous, acrobatic swimmers. An enormous 83 foot slide beckons the daring. And, at the end of the day, nothing beats chicken fried steak from Neal’s Cafe. For more information, visit nealslodges.com

JACOB’S WELL

Located in Wimberley, TX, this artesian spring is fed by the Trinity aquifer which is over 140 feet below the pool’s surface. The pool is also the entrance to an elaborate underground cave system, but only professionals are allowed to explore it. Due to a lack of rain, Jacob’s Well is currently closed to swimmers, but the park remains open for hiking and viewing the spring. For more information, go to visit wimberley.com/jacobswell/.

3 BARTON SPRINGS POOL

Located in the heart of Austin’s 358 acre Zilker Park, this three acre pool is fed a frigid diet of icy water from underground springs and maintains an average temperature between 68-70 degrees. Its depths range from zero to 18 feet deep and it’s surrounded by sun-dappled grassy areas for lunching, lounging, and laughing. The pool attracts crowds as diverse as Austin and has welcomed more than a few celebrity swimmers over the years. Guests can expect to pay an admission fee for the day or season before enjoying the cool waters. For more information, visit austintexas. gov/department/barton-springs-pool.

Every Book Has Its Reader

ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

THIS SUMMER

“A welcoming place to inspire the mind.”

Allen Public Library’s vision statement says it all. If you have kids, you know that a visit to APL is often a necessary must each week, whether for a study session in a private room or to chill out with a goodie from Food for Thought Cafe. For adults, APL is a haven too. A book club or a community event are only a couple of the myriad offerings of this powerhouse library.

Jeff Timbs, Director of the Allen Public Library, has been serving the public for 27 years now. He joined APL in 2008 and has seen the library change locations five times! He has also witnessed its tremendous growth. “Just for this summer, we have 115 programs offered, ranging from story times to a blues band. Everything is free.” In 2016, Allen voters approved the sale of 16 million dollars of General Obligation Bonds to fund the expansion and renovation of the existing library. Construction is slated to begin this fall and go on for approximately two years. Timbs notes, “With the extra space for programming, we can serve better than we already do.”

Check out a few of the events occurring in July...

First Responder of the Month

Sammy Rippamonti, 41, recently celebrated his 16th year with the Allen Police Department. Currently, he is assigned to the community relations unit and is also the crisis negotiator.

As a child, Rippamonti grew up in a small town in south Texas where farming was a big part of life. He originally wanted to own and operate his own farm, but eventually understood how much work went into farming.

“Farming in south Texas makes for a long, hot summer day!” Rippamonti recounts. “When I started dating my wife in college, her dad was a state trooper. Being around him at the end of his career and getting to hear his stories sparked my interest in law enforcement.”

After completing the academy and field training, he was assigned to patrol. Rippamonti gained a great deal of knowledge as an officer in his first year.

“There is so much more to police work than most realize,” Rippamonti admits. “Here in Allen, we strive to make a positive impact on our community by going above and beyond to help people.”

Rippamonti’s personal goal is to be able to retire knowing he made a positive impact on the community.

“Being voted as the first responder of the month is a great honor,” Rippamonti says. “I have the luxury of working for a great department and community.  You could go down the list here at APD and any one of our officers would be fit for this honor!”

A lot has changed since Brian Edwards first crossed paths with Jared Whitehead in the ‘90s. Phones have gotten smaller. Televisions have gotten bigger. Dallas has gotten hotter. Jared is much taller.

In their early days of knowing one another, Dallas was better known as “Big D” and, as Brian puts it, “Jared was just a little kid.”

The two met when Brian began working with Jared’s dad, Andrew Whitehead, helping him install and maintain HVAC systems. Brian was actually a roofer at the time, but saw that Andrew, who was suffering from a hip injury, was struggling, and jumped into action. He’s worked in HVAC ever since. When Jared was old enough, he spent his summers helping his dad too.

Before long, the three men were more than just coworkers, they were family. Brian is married to Jared’s older sister, Tonya.

Although the brothers in law haven’t always worked together, they’ve always remembered those

early years fondly. Last summer Jared and Brian were drawn back to the beginning, and the dream of starting their own HVAC company was born.

They had a clear goal: to be the premier comfort experts for DFW. The two knew they would offer clients the best possible customer service, but they needed a name. After throwing around a dozen ideas, Brian, a huge Dallas Cowboys fan, had a definite favorite: Big D Mechanical.

Since its inception, Big D Mechanical has combined superior service with top of the line products. Brian and Jared have spent the past few decades honing their HVAC expertise and together they bring 40 years of experience to every job they encounter, whether they’re keeping homes cool in the summer or ensuring offices are warm and cozy during the winter. They specialize in high efficiency heating, ventilation, and air conditioning solutions for both businesses and homes.

Brian Edwards and Jared Whitehead

While technology and relationships and jobs have changed since the guys met in the ‘90s, one thing that hasn’t changed is Texas’ tendency to serve up sweltering summers. As any Texan can attest to, there’s nothing worse than having your air conditioning curl up like an armadillo on the side of the road in the middle of July. Fortunately, Brian and Jared have a few tips and tricks up their sleeves.

1. Fresh Filters. Replace your filters according to the specifications of your system. Not only does this improve the overall efficiency of the system, it provides the best possible air quality. Generally speaking, systems that require a 1” filter should be replaced every 30 days, 2” filters need replacing every quarter, and 4” filters should be replaced semiannually.

2. Room to Breathe. While outside equipment is designed to withstand the elements, overgrown shrubs, trash, grass, and debris can spell disaster for it. The space around and under the system should be completely clear. Brian notes, “It can seem like a lot of extra work, but your HVAC system is the most important appliance in your home.” Keeping the area around your system neat and tidy is a small investment in your comfort.

3. Regular System Maintenance. Whether you’re a home or business owner, it’s crucial to stay on top of regularly scheduled maintenance with your HVAC provider. This should include cleaning the condenser coil and checking proper operation to achieve top performance. Jared notes, “It’s also important to check and clear out condensate drain lines. Failing to do so could potentially cause thousands of dollars in damage to your ceiling or flooring.”

If you don't have an HVAC provider, Big D Mechanical is ready to serve. Check them out online at https://bigdmechanical.com/ or call (469) 773-HEAT.

CUTX CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

Nonprofit of the Month

In 1931, 13 teachers each contributed $5 in order to create what was then known as the Teachers Credit Union. Today, the now named Credit Union of Texas has over 150,000 members throughout Collin County. But CUTX is more than just a credit union.

INVESTED IN THE COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE

Putting people before profits has long been a priority for the credit union, and as a result, they have donated millions of dollars to the community. The natural evolution of their generosity was the formation of the CUTX Charitable Foundation in 2020, which was born from the heart of the board who wanted to give back to the community. Living out its vision to deliver an unexpected experience, CUTX supports dozens of educational and scholastic initiatives in the greater Dallas area by hosting and sponsoring numerous events and fundraisers benefiting schools, community nonprofits, special needs groups, and first responders.

The CUTX Charitable Foundation strives to support and connect other local nonprofits and charities within the community. “We partner with a multitude of organizations to ensure we are giving wherever there is a need,” says Executive Director Tracey Cline. “We work and walk side-byside with smaller nonprofits because they’re the ones with boots on the ground.”

“WE GIVE FROM THE HEART BECAUSE WE TRULY DO CARE,” SAYS CLINE. “IT’S IMPORTANT TO US TO DO OUR PART IN THE COMMUNITY.”

FIVE PILLARS OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH

CUTX Charitable Foundation’s mission is to create philanthropic solutions to empower the most vulnerable among the communities they serve. They do this by connecting people in need to local resources. The foundation assists in making these connections for those who are struggling with suburban homelessness, individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, women in crisis, children in crisis, and those with intellectual and developmental needs. The foundation is committed to uniting these groups with the resources they need to be empowered, thriving community members.

Additionally, they serve educational efforts by supporting teachers and offering scholarships for student members, and they are committed to actively sponsoring events and causes that enhance the quality of life for the community. CUTX provides community nonprofit organizations with employee volunteers, offering employees one hour of vacation for every hour of service to the community. Through volunteerism, community sponsorships, and financial education, CUTX strives to make a difference every day.

In the last year, CUTX was recognized with the Communities Foundation of Texas “Be in Good Company” Seal of Excellence, voted the Best Credit Union in DFW by the readers of The Dallas Morning News and named the winner of the Torch Awards for Ethics, Better Business Bureau Serving North Central Texas. “Our mission is to empower the most vulnerable in the community who just want to be seen,” says Cline.

Managing owner Bhavna Gupta was born in India — the land of spices. She and her husband, along with their two daughters, have called North Texas their home for 13 years. Coming from a family in the catering business, Bhavna was exposed to the culinary world from a young age and grew up with all the tastes, flavors, and smells of different world cuisines.

Cooking is a practical life skill that everyone needs. At YCA, Bhavna shares her passion for teaching and the joy and value of cooking to children and teens at both her Allen and Frisco locations. She’s created a welcoming environment that provides a "real" setting so that students can take what they learn at YCA back to their homes and into their future. Bhavna notes, “It’s not just learning how to cook, it’s learning life skills.”

Younger children hone their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, as well as safety and basic hygiene practices like hand washing and keeping surfaces clean. As they grow older, this skill becomes increasingly important as they transition to living on their own. Teens who can cook for themselves gain independence, make healthier choices when eating, and develop skills in time management and organization as they learn to think on their feet, adapt to situations, and find creative solutions when faced with obstacles.

Whether in classes, culinary camps, or one-ofa-kind party experiences filled with interactive activities, young chefs learn the joy and value of cooking. Planned around a unique theme, each class is an entirely new experience that incorporates culinary skills that build upon each other to progress over time into more complex food preparation and presentation.

A R.E.C.I.P.E. FOR SUCCESS

At YCA, students broaden their culinary knowledge, build self-esteem, practice teamwork, and increase knowledge of the world around them, cultivating an appreciation for cultural diversity. Their Code of Values signifies their commitment to building strong foundations that support team members, students, and families within our community focusing on Respect, Empathy, Children, Integrity, and a Passion driven Extraordinary experience.

If you’re interested in signing up for a class, camp, or want to book an all inclusive party visit allentx. youngchefsacademy.com/culinary-camps. "You supply the chef, and they supply the rest!"

LASHEILA YATES MA, SHRM-CP, CPM

LaSheila Yates has years of experience in senior executive leadership in public administration. She is the first Black woman to serve as Executive Director of the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission and was the City of Cedar Rapids’ first chief diversity officer between 2014 - 2018.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology in 2004 and Master of Arts in Social Science from Southern University A&M College in 2005, while also serving as a heavy construction engineer in the Louisiana Army National Guard.  She then received a Master of Arts in Sociology degree from Southern Illinois University in 2007. Prior to moving to Allen in 2022, Yates was acknowledged by the Iowa community for her leadership. In 2018, she was inducted into the

She has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Iowa Department of Human Rights Board, Commission of Persons with Disabilities, Cedar Rapids Police Chief Advisory Committee, United Way of East Central Iowa, Linn County Juvenile Justice Advisory Board, and Wakeup for Your Rights.

Yates currently owns Cultural Perspectives, LLC, a human resources business that was established in 2008 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her company’s focus is to provide high-quality diversity, equity, and inclusion education and consulting. Her company is currently offering free training and community workshops related to DEI. She enjoys working in the field of DEI and feels like the work she engaged now is a gift and act of service for my new community. Student of the Month

Life changes can sometimes seem scary.

One prime example is graduating from high school and heading off to college to pursue your dreams. You never know what opportunities may arise, who you will meet, if you will fit in, or what life will look like when you are away from your friends or family.

Most young adults are fearful, but not Abigail Wade.

Wade will be attending Texas Woman’s University to earn her degree in child development and hopes to one day become a child life specialist in a hospital setting.

Before the fall semester begins, Wade wants to do her best to take every moment in and not take everything so seriously. After being deeply involved in theater, she’s taking a break and learning new crafts and hobbies.

“I have begun to enjoy new things like rock climbing as a way to release physical and mental stress,” Wade adds. “But most of all, I have loved serving as a preschool teacher at my church on Sunday mornings.”

Abigail’s parents describe her as smart, kind, and talented, and they also admire her ambition.

“Anything she does she goes all in and does the work to be prepared and ready,” Shane Wade, Abigail’s father, says. “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work.”

During her downtime, her parents know they can find her in one of three places: curled up reading a book, spending time playing games with her sisters or hanging out with her close friends.

“Being student of the month means a chance to help other students remember to take care of and love themselves,” Wade mentions. “By having this platform, I hope anyone reading this can take away these things: You are loved by God and by others. Your mental health matters. And it’s okay to make mistakes!”

What’s Next: Her summer goal is to prepare for college and allow herself to relax!

What She’s Watching: Peaky Blinders, Criminal Minds, La La Land and Casablanca

Who She’s Following: Anything Disney-related. Disney parks, movies, outfits, costumes, characters, and Disney influencers.
