LIFESTYLE LETTER

Healthy, Wealthy & Wise: Living A Balanced Life If you described to me a year ago what my life would look like today, I would never have believed you. I was overworked, underappreciated, exhausted, and my priorities were completely out of line. My relationships, both personal and professional, were suffering because I had allowed unhealthy lifestyle choices to dominate my decisions and direction. It was not until I made a conscious choice to make myself a priority that I began to see results. I learned a valuable lesson in a difficult way. I was attempting to do so much for those around me that I forgot to take care of myself. I was running on fumes. I made numerous doctor and dentist appointments for my children, but never for myself. I threw myself into my work and prioritized my career above all else. However, I had been neglecting my own family without even recognizing it. I was giving all I had to others. All of my time, money, and energy were being spent elsewhere. When I got home, I had nothing left. It was not until my marriage, career, and self-confidence had reached their breaking points that I took a step back and realized just how unhealthy I had been living for years. That is when I decided that I needed to reevaluate my priorities and make an effort to live a healthier life. I made a choice to cut out toxic people and projects and prioritize my well-being. I created a motto that has changed my life. I told myself that in every decision moving forward I needed to ask myself one question: Does this bring me and my family pleasure, profit, or progress? If not, then it serves no purpose. I learned that one’s health is rooted in living a balanced life. Investing equally in your physical, mental, and financial well-being is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. Our January issue is a guide to living well. I hope you are inspired to create harmony within your own life. From Dr. Greg and Monica Steiner’s advice on living a balanced life to the financial wellness advice from the experts at Dawson Private Wealth to designing zen into your home, I hope you find motivation to live a healthier life—you’re worth it!

Sips of the Season ARTICLE BY KATELYN REED PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBEKAH USSERY

Apple Cider Old Fashioned ingredients • • • • • • • •

fresh orange slice gold sanding sugar large ice cube 2/3 cup apple cider, chilled 2 oz. whiskey 2 dashes Angostura bitters apple slice cinnamon stick

method 1. Prepare a rocks glass by thoroughly moistening the rim with a fresh orange slice. Pour the gold sanding sugar into a shallow dish. Dip the rim of the rocks glass into the sanding sugar and twist gently to coat. Add a large cube of ice to the glass. 2. In a separate glass, mix the apple cider and whiskey. Pour the mixture into the prepared rocks glass. Add two dashes of Angostura bitters. Garnish with an apple slice and cinnamon stick. 3. Enjoy!

An Old Fashioned is one of the earliest known cocktails. First concocted during the 19th century, a traditional Old Fashioned is created by muddling sugar, water, and bitters before adding whiskey and garnishing with orange zest and a cocktail cherry. Served over ice in a rocks glass, this classic cocktail is a reliable favorite. But a new year calls for trying new things, and dropping temperatures demand a toastable treat to sip beside a glowing fire. With that in mind, we give you a wintery twist on a tried and true libation: the Apple Cider Old Fashioned. This cozy cocktail features the familiar flavors of orange, bitters, and whiskey found in the classic, but swaps a sugar cube for the crisp and aromatic sweetness of apple cider. Rye, with its spicy, fruity flavor profile, is the perfect whiskey for this scintillating beverage. If you’re looking for something local, Blackland’s Rye, distilled and bottled in Fort Worth, can’t be beat. Don a comfy sweater, light the fire, gather your ingredients, and soon you’ll be toasting with the best sip this season has to offer.

BUILDING H E A LT H Y H A B I T S Resolve to Change Your Process, Not Your Outcomes

To really get the benefits of health and wellness while juggling a family, career, social activities, and continuing education requires daily movement, proper nutrition, and a positive attitude. It must fit into your schedule and become a lifestyle. It can't be a chore or a time-sensitive goal you reach only to wonder what’s next. Remember the adage that if you want to get something done, give it to a busy person? It's true! That person has mastered the art of busyness. Busyness necessitates planning, prioritizing, and persevering. When it comes to your health, prevention trumps cure any day! Baby steps first. Build success after success, and before you know it you'll achieve fitness success. Begin by incorporating 10 minute breathing exercises three times a week. Once you see the benefits, try walking twice a week. You'll feel better and will start waking up earlier because you WANT to, so try lifting weights twice a week. Before long, you will be fit and lookin’ fab! To maintain momentum, your New Year’s resolution needs to be to change your

PROCESS, not your outcome. Your resolution should be to introduce the aforementioned simple, positive behaviors, but your ‘resolution’ is to make them a habit. You MUST be patient and determined! Sell yourself on the idea that changes really are possible. You will need six weeks to start the habit pattern, and months to really ingrain it. Reward yourself for outcomes, but really dig into patting yourself on the back for sustaining your 'new you' program. Lifetimes are made of years, months, weeks, days, hours and minutes of habits. A good life = good habits! And what about the power of teamwork? You can almost guarantee success with positive support from like-minded friends, accountability from a coach, or an ever-supportive spouse willing to offer a kick in the backside when you feel you are losing the plot. They are your think tank to sift ideas, outcomes, next steps, and, most of all, keep you inspired! And having your spouse on board will take it to another level that can last a lifetime! For us, it’s been 37 years of fitness goals together…and we're still counting!

Not Having this Could Destroy Your Retirement

Combatting Myths About Long-term Care

ARTICLE BY STEVEN DAWSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

18

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

Picture this: you’ve worked hard for decades in a demanding industry and now it’s time to transition into the next phase of life – retirement. You have a few vacation spots picked out. Your company retirement party was last week. Now you find yourself excited, but anxious about what life will be like when you no longer have to set your alarm clock. More importantly, you've saved well and built a healthy nest egg – life is good. Assets alone may not be enough to ensure a comfortable retirement. It’s been my experience working with clients over the years that many don’t have a tangible plan for long-term care. Below, I share common misconceptions about long-term care.

MYTH 1: MY HEALTH OR DISABILITY INSURANCE WILL COVER LONG-TERM CARE. Many people incorrectly believe “other health insurance” will pay for their long-term care. The truth is surprising: long-term care is NOT covered by other kinds of insurance including your HMO, health or long-term disability insurance. Only longterm care insurance, typically purchased on your own, covers day-to-day personal care assistance when you are unable to perform everyday activities like bathing and dressing.

MYTH 2: MEDICARE OR MEDICAID WILL COVER LONG-TERM CARE. Most people incorrectly believe Medicare will pay for long-term care services. In reality, Medicare does not generally cover long-term care. Medicare pays for skilled care in a nursing home only for short periods when you are recuperating following a hospital stay for a related condition. Once your care needs stabilize and you need personal or custodial care, Medicare will not pay these costs. Medicare will only pay for care at home under very limited circumstances. Medicaid pays for long-term care only for people with very low assets and limited income. I’ve met with many people who have had to care for a loved one, either by physically moving them into their home or financially subsidizing some of their living expenses. It can be a real challenge for family

to work through. Understand that nobody wants to be a financial strain on their loved ones. Consider your personal situation with your CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and, if necessary, take action to help secure retirement. Long-term care policies have exclusions and/or limitations. The cost and availability of long-term care insurance depends on factors such as age, health, and the type and amount of insurance purchased. As with most financial decisions, there are expenses associated with the purchase of long-term care insurance. The Benefits of Assisted Stretching ARTICLE BY JOSLIN SANSOM | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

New year, new you, right? The reality is that setting overly ambitious goals can be such a jolt to our routine that motivation dissipates within weeks. This year, consider an on-ramp approach when resolving to be a better, healthier you. Consider starting with something that may surprise you: practitioner-assisted stretching. My journey with practitioner-assisted stretching began with a dramatic decrease in my physical activity during the height of COVID. I experienced weight gain and significant muscle tightness in my lower back and upper hamstrings. Performing simple household tasks, such as bending down to pick up my dog's water dish, was difficult and painful. I felt like I was 90, and the thought of getting back into shape was daunting! When sharing my struggles with a friend, he suggested I try Stretch Zone. He explained that you go in, lie on the table, and they stretch you.

26

G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS

My reaction? "That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I'm not going to pay someone to stretch me—I can stretch myself!" A month later, with very few self-stretches, no workouts, and the pain still present, I decided to give it a try. What I experienced was astounding. The improvement I felt after just one session was shocking, and within a very short period of time, I was back to moving freely without pain and participating in activities I loved. It was the on-ramp I needed. Everybody knows we need to stretch, but most of us don't. Stretching is crucial for muscle and joint health. New research shows it can even help lower blood pressure. As we age and physical activity decreases, our bodies don't move as freely as they once did. Unlike self-stretching, assisted stretching is a personalized routine performed by Stretch Zone method-certified stretch practitioners.

Using a patented strapping system and proprietary tables to position, stabilize, and isolate muscles, clients communicate their comfort level. The result is a comfortable, higher-quality stretch that improves range of motion with less pain. Our practitioners enjoy hearing how our clients benefit from their sessions every day. "I've tried everything to relieve my lower back pain; it's now gone!" and "I've been unable to walk without pain for years until now!" is feedback we hear often. Our clients also share how adding practitioner-assisted stretching in addition to chiropractic and physical therapy treatments has dramatically amplified their desired results. Whether you are dealing with muscle stiffness, recovering from injury, seeking to improve sports performance, or resolving to be a better, healthier you this year, practitioner-assisted stretching can help!

The "Well" in Dwelling Wellness is the next big thing in interior design, and you can have it too! ARTICLE BY MEG LABAZIEWICZ, CERTIFIED DESIGNER AND OWNER OF INSPIRED INTERIORS BY MEG, ALLEN, TX

30

M UST SE E | HOM E + D ES I GN

As an interior designer, I am always searching for the latest trends. I love this about interior design. There is always something new to see and learn. It’s continually changing to reflect the ever-changing way we live. I recently attended High Point Furniture Market in North Carolina, and it was clear that wellness is one of the hottest design trends. Our mood is easily influenced by our surroundings, and in turn can affect our health, productivity, and quality of life. Spaces with clutter, poor air circulation, and poor lighting are proven to cause stress. Good design is about the balance of aesthetics and functionality. When done well, design has the power to help promote a greater sense of well-being. My favorite ways to create a more calming environment include incorporating nature, adding a spiritual nook, elevating lighting, decluttering, space planning, and color selection.

INCORPORATING NATURE We continue to see and love spaces that blur the line between indoors and out. Bringing the outside in and the inside out can be easily achieved by using plants, natural materials like wood and bamboo, and selecting colors that mimic nature. Rattan is having a moment and can be seen in everything from furniture to lighting. It makes the perfect accent to the lighter, brighter paint colors currently on trend.

ADDING A SPIRITUAL NOOK I love the idea of a Zen or yoga nook since it requires minimal space and can be incorporated in an office, bedroom, or living room. A meditation pillow, crystals, and other items that bring you joy are simple ways to carve out a retreat within your home in which to practice meditation, gratefulness, or stillness. In a recent project, we used beautiful baskets to store weights, bands, and a yoga mat.

ELEVATING LIGHTING Lighting is crucial, and most rooms benefit from incorporating natural, task, and ambient lighting. Natural light is the perfect mood booster, provided you’re not trying to sleep. I recently relocated my office to the room with the best morning sun. It’s been a wonderful way to start my day. Task and ambient lighting are also important to set the mood for work or relaxation.

DECLUTTERING Decluttering is an easy way to bring a sense of calm. Find a place for all your necessities and pitch what you don’t need. Consider using baskets and trays to beautify and organize. Labeling items is beneficial as it makes it easier for others to help control the clutter. In my kitchen, our toaster sits on a pretty tray which also serves as a crumb catcher.

SPACE PLANNING Space planning is vital to ensuring a room functions correctly. It’s the very first step in design. An inviting space features ample seating that provides comfort, relaxation, and increased functionality. Consider traffic patterns and specific uses of the space. The more personalized you make your home, the more relaxed and restored you will feel.

COLOR SELECTION Colors play a large part in how a space feels. Neutrals and natural colors are said to be calming, making them a great back drop for more intense colors and texture. Calming, nature-inspired colors like shades of green are associated with balance and renewal and are currently very popular. Ready for some pizazz? Consider adding small doses of stimulating red, energizing yellow, or dramatic black. As we ring in 2023 with anticipation and excitement, I hope you draw inspiration from what I have shared and lower the stress in your home. Wishing you a wonderful new year!

Our mood is easily influenced by our surroundings, and in turn can affect our health, productivity, and quality of life.

Nonprofit of the Month Send Hope Cares for Children in Honduras

Dr. Tom Brian and his wife, Sharon, are the founders of Send Hope. The nonprofit supports and assists over 1,000 children in the remote area of La Moskitia, Honduras, through the House of Hope children's home, Katrina Engle Memorial Nourishment Program, and other community outreach initiatives. When Dr. Tom Brian graduated from dental school, he initially thought he would be a missionary. “I’m a Methodist, so I wrote to the general board of global ministries, but they said we don’t have money to send out missionaries.”

So Dr. Brian delayed his plans and started his dental practice in Allen, TX in 1974. In 1991, a man joined his church and shared his plan to serve Honduras's people. “I had never heard of short-term missions back then,” said Dr. Brian, “I told him I was a dentist, and I would like to go with him.” On Dr. Brian’s first mission trip, he was tasked with pulling teeth. “The first two people I saw on the trip were two young ladies between eighteen and twenty who had a little bit of decay between their front teeth.” Dr. Brian said, “You could barely see the decay, and I said those could be filled easily.”

Once Dr. Brian returned to the states, he searched for additional supplies to better serve the people of Honduras. The trip had affirmed his calling and, within several years, he was taking short mission trips every six weeks. “When you put together your passion and your vocation–when those two cross– that’s a real high,” said Dr. Brian. Currently, Send Hope has a fully functioning dental clinic, a children’s home called the House of Hope which supports children and youth with disabilities, and a school across from the main campus, loaned free to the government to conduct classes as a public elementary school.

First Responder of the Month Kellie Koch: Lowery Freshman Center School Nurse

ARTICLE BY KATELYN REED | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE VANMERSBERGEN

From upset tummies and scraped knees to daily meds and minor emergencies, school nurses are the unsung heroes of our local schools. Today, Kellie Koch is getting a song. Kellie Koch, a BSN RN, is also a Nationally Certified School Nurse, a certification she earned this summer. But she hasn't always been a school nurse. Kellie worked for fourteen years at the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital as a bone marrow transplant nurse. After her family relocated to Allen, she got her children settled before she began working as a substitute nurse in Allen ISD. She began her current position, as the school nurse at Lowery Freshman Center, in 2020.

When asked about the job, Kellie pauses before saying, "I think the most memorable thing about being a school nurse is when kids tell you that you've made a difference or that they're happy to see you, they're glad you're there." She goes on to say, "Every day is so different—you never know what the day is going to be." No matter what the day holds, it's easy to see why Kellie is so beloved by the community. She is kind and confident, with a warmth that undoubtedly puts visitors to the clinic at ease. As Kellie sees it, "We're here for more than just Band-Aids and ice packs. There's such a value to having a nurse in the building. For parents, students, and teachers."

"The most memorable thing about being a school nurse is when kids tell you that you've made a dif ference or that they're happy to see you, they're glad you're there."

Spencer Gillus — Lucas Christian Academy STUDENT OF THE MONTH ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISA HAUSER Spencer Gillus exemplifies what it means to have integrity. In a time when people are recognized for their fame or for their success, Spencer is being recognized for his character. And that’s not to say he hasn’t achieved great success. Spencer is a stellar student, a track and field star, and a warrior on the football field. As Promotions and Outreach Coordinator at his school, Spencer initiated a mentoring program that matches senior boys with 7th-grade boys to help them get ready for high school. Academic Advisor Leslie Patterson says, “I see Spencer interacting with his teachers and peers, and he has the utmost respect from all.” Spencer lives by the motto, “Try new things." Living by this motto has gotten him a lot of places. “I didn’t think I’d be a good football player because I’m smaller, but I tried it and I love it a lot.” When asked the secret to his success, Spencer is quick to credit his faith and his close-knit family, including a sister two years younger that he looks out for. “We have a strong family connection; we’ve always been good together.” He says one of the things he likes best about living in the Allen/Lucas area is its wide-open spaces and slower pace. When he’s not in class or on the field, Spencer loves being with close friends in his free time. He can be found hanging out at with friends at their houses, eating with them at Chick-fil-A, or tossing the ball around at Celebration Park. Spencer takes a humble, yet influential, approach to making a difference in the community around him. Unlike so many, he is not attention-seeking. “I call him our ‘quiet leader,’” Patterson continues, “He has a soft voice but his actions speak loudly." What He’s Watching: Stranger Things “I like the show’s mystery and suspense.” Who He’s Following: Drake and Steve Lacy “I like all kinds of music, so I follow a variety of artists.” Dream Destination: Disney World What’s Next: Spencer hopes to attend either Abilene Christian or Texas A&M to study business management with a goal of becoming an entrepreneur.
