The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as children, whether it is the scents, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. In my family, we have a unique tradition of playing BINGO every Christmas Eve with prizes including $1 lottery tickets, fast food gift cards, and various gag gifts. My parents gather random "as seen on TV" and Walmart clearance aisle prizes throughout the year, and then fill the living room with boxes and bags for their five children, our partners and thirteen grandchildren to sift through. It is always an evening of laughs and inevitable regifting. This cheesy tradition has been the highlight of my holidays for decades. Additionally, my father, who I believe was the inspiration for Clark Griswold in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," constructs an elaborate display that garners hundreds of spectators and local media each year. Our BINGO game is often interrupted by visitors taking photos in the yard — my father gladly goes out to say hello and gift them with candy canes. We would love to hear your family holiday traditions! Please share them with us on our social media. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier while also supporting our local businesses. Holiday S W E E T T O O T H In our holiday home, there's a sweet tradition that revolves around simplicity and irresistible treats — easy candy making. With just a handful of ingredients, we embark on a delightful journey of creating confections that embody the spirit of the season. The kitchen buzzes with excitement as we measure, mix, and pour our way to holiday sweetness. The kids eagerly lend a hand, relishing the joy of turning basic ingredients into delectable treasures. The scent of chocolate and sugary sweetness wafts through the air as we mold, shape, and adorn our creations with festive sprinkles. It's a bonding experience filled with laughter, shared stories, and the anticipation of savoring the fruits of our labor.

Holiday Pretzel Rods I N G R E D IE N T S • pretzels rods • 1 cup of chocolate chips or candy melts • sprinkles and toppings

DIRECTIONS 1. Line a baking sheet with wax paper. 2. Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth. 3. Dip each pretzel melted chocolate.

Marshmallow Snowmen INGREDIENTS • large marshmallows • icing or melted white chocolate • mini chocolate chips or small candies (for eyes and buttons) • orange fondant or orange candy (for carrot noses) • pretzel rods (for arms) • pull apart red licorice • shredded coconut (for snow) • various candy of choice (for accessories) • prepared hot cocoa (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. Thread three large marshmallows onto a skewer, straw, or toothpick to create the snowman's body.

2. Use icing or melted white chocolate to "glue" the marshmallows together. 3. Decorate the snowman with mini chocolate chips or candies for eyes and buttons. 4. Roll a small piece of orange fondant or shape orange candy into a carrot nose and attach it to the top marshmallow. 5. Break pretzel sticks to create arms and insert them on the sides of the snowman. 6. Pull apart the red licorice and cut to length to create scarves for the snowmen. 7. Create accessories like hats, gloves, and gift boxes with candy. 8. Sprinkle shredded coconut around the base for a snowy effect. 9. Let the icing or chocolate set, and your marshmallow snowmen are ready to delight! Looking for even more marshmallow snowman fun? Divine Divinity INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

2 large eggs (use whites only) 3 cups sugar 2/3 cup water 1/2 cup light corn syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. Separate egg whites into the bowl of a stand mixer and let stand at room temperature for approximately 30 minutes. Discard yolks. Meanwhile, line three 15x10x1 inch pans with waxed paper. 2. In a large, heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, water and corn syrup over medium heat; bring to a boil, stirring constantly to dissolve sugar. 3. Cook, without stirring, over medium heat until a candy thermometer reads 252° (hard-ball stage). Just before the temperature is reached, beat egg whites on medium speed until stiff peaks form. 4. Slowly add hot sugar mixture in a thin stream over egg whites, beating constantly and scraping sides of bowl occasionally. 5. Add vanilla. Beat until candy holds its shape, about 5 - 6 minutes. Be careful to not over mix as candy will become stiff and crumbly. 6. If pecans are being used, Immediately fold them in. 7. Quickly drop by teaspoonfuls onto prepared pans. Let stand at room temperature until dry to the touch. Store between sheets of waxed paper in an airtight container at room temperature.

Good Human Doing Great Things MEET JANE BENNETT

Each month we select a member of our community who goes above and beyond as a volunteer and servant leader. This month we are showcasing Jane Bennett as our Good Human of the Month. Jane currently serves on the Allen Public Art Committee. The Public Art Committee oversees the commissioning of artwork to enhance Allen’s public places and infuse culture and beauty into the everyday lives of Allen’s residents and visitors. We asked Jane to introduce herself and let us in on why she chooses to serve.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN SERVING THE COMMUNITY? JB: We moved to the Allen area in 1987, and I have been a volunteer from the beginning.

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER? JB: My mother set the example: to be part of the community; to give to others; and to offer creative leadership to grow service organizations. I joke that I worked part time and volunteered full time – and that has been true. I have gained so much satisfaction initiating programs, recruiting membership, and building organizations. Yet, in the end, what I treasure the most are the friends I’ve made along the way, who also care and give of themselves.

WHAT ORGANIZATIONS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH LOCALLY? JB: I have been a volunteer and a leader in my children's schools; for the school district; the Foundation for Allen Schools; in my children's activities – Girl Scouts, Junior Symphony, Bowling Team, Escadrille, After Prom; the Friends of the Library; Public Art; other city committees; PACs; Collin County Diversity Council; Collin County Master Gardeners; and more.

Being more mindful and in harmony with our emotions is the cornerstone of becoming a happier and more centered person. For Vonda Kay, owner and founder of Mindful Mermaid LLC in Allen, becoming more mindful is the key to de-stressing one’s life. Mindful Mermaid LLC was created after Vonda, a former family law attorney, realized just how much stress she was under in her profession. After beating breast cancer, Vonda decided she “wanted a new chapter” and, during her meditations one day, she envisioned herself in a shop, and knew that she had to take a leap of faith in opening up her own metaphysical gift shop in the form of Mindful Mermaid.

For many people, crystals can hold power that goes beyond just aesthetics. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Carson’s Crusaders Foundation is on a mission to provide support and assistance to children and families who are affected by pediatric cancers. Carson Thomas Richardson, the namesake of the foundation, was a typical, happy, sweet little boy. At three-and-a-half years old, Carson was diagnosed with Stage IV Hepatoblastoma, a solid tumor childhood cancer originating in the liver. After four months of chemotherapy and a liver resection, all signs of the cancer were gone. Four months later the cancer was back.

The family spent the rest of Carson’s life fighting. Over the next few years, Carson endured over fifty rounds of chemo, days and nights in the hospital, seven surgeries, weeks of daily radiation, hundreds of blood draws and IVs, countless doctor visits, blood transfusions, hair and hearing loss, a clinical trial, and treatment out of the country. Though the family fought with all they had, on February 27, 2010, Carson left this world and returned to his Heavenly Father. Carson’s Crusaders Foundation was founded to continue the work Carson would do if he was able. With his sweet personality and giving spirit as inspiration, Carson’s Crusaders Foundation carries on his legacy through its Transportation Program, Sibling Superstar Program, and Paint the Town Gold initiatives. Did you know the average cost of a pediatric cancer diagnosis is over $840,000 spanning three years? The emotional impact of a child with cancer is devastating, and managing the staggering financial toxicity of the treatment is practically impossible. The foundation hosts Superstar Sibling Events and delivers seasonal and birthday gifts for the brothers and sisters of pediatric cancer patients throughout the year. In 12 years, Carson’s legacy has raised over $2 million dollars for more than 1,100 precious, local families enduring the unthinkable. As good stewards of donations, Carson’s Crusaders Foundation has funded more than 45,000 trips to the hospital for life saving cancer treatments and distributed over $1 million in direct assistance, including gas cards, parking, sibling gifts, Superstar

activities, scholarships, and more to deserving families. It has also invested in programs to promote local education and advocacy for pediatric cancer awareness through their Paint the Town Gold initiatives. Unconventional Christmas Trees When I was a little girl, family friends hosted a lavish holiday party every year. I still remember the excitement of pulling up to their house and seeing every window aglow. Inside, an enormous Christmas tree filled their great room. I marveled at how they managed to decorate it, imagining them stacked on one another's shoulders or leaning precariously from the balcony to place the star. The tree was just one of dozens; every room — even the bedrooms — contained at least one tree, and the kids made a game of dashing from room to room, counting as we went. Over the years, my family has enjoyed just about every type of Christmas tree there is. For over a decade, my dad would drag our fake tree down from the attic, and we would spend hours fluffing its scraggly branches. During high school, we moved to Lucas right after Thanksgiving, so Christmas decorating took a backseat to unpacking. We did manage to hang a few ornaments on a potted Norfolk Island Pine which we later planted in our backyard. One year, we made a sojourn to a Christmas tree farm and spent the morning sipping hot cocoa and searching for our family's tree. And when I was out on my own and didn't have space for a traditional tree, I crafted one out of twinkle lights and push pins, zigzagging the lights across a wall in my tiny apartment. CONTINUED >

Meet Ishaan and Avi. Together with their mom Christina ChengPatel, they run a small nonprofit with a big impact on the community. From hosting basketball camps to distributing essentials at homeless camps, these remarkable young men are on a mission. It all began with a simple act of compassion. Avi witnessed a homeless man on a street corner and wanted to help. Though they couldn't find the man again after purchasing him food and water, they were undeterred. They purchased more supplies and directly distributed them to homeless encampments in downtown Dallas. This single act of kindness was the inception of Under My Umbrella, Inc. a grassroots organization now operating out of their garage and living room.

During the holiday season, their project “Build-A-Tree and LightA-Menorah" shines brightly. Eight years ago, Ishaan wondered how children in shelters celebrated Christmas, lacking homes of their own. This question led to the annual mini tree decorating event hosted at a local shelter. The community rallied behind them, crafting mini ornaments and donating them for the event. “We want to make this Christmas the best yet,” adds Ishaan, noting plans to extend their outreach to a local senior assisted living facility. “What keeps us going is seeing the people who need our help every week. It’s a real need, it’s more like a have to,” says Avi. “I definitely want to incorporate this into my life later on. I will continue this effort,” adds Ishaan. In a time when the culture is loud and distracting, these young men stand apart from the noise. It can be daunting for parents who want to provide opportunities for their kids to get off their screens and into the community. Christina’s advice?

“It’s important to let them feel like they have some control in how they want to contribute. If they like to draw, we encourage them to decorate distribution bags. We’re happy to help parents find the opportunity that works best for their family.” At the core of UMU’s mission is the belief that when we overcome struggles as individuals, families, and communities, we come out stronger than before.
