Stacy Apple, national communications officer at Beautiful Lives Project, says isolation is a very real epidemic, so events such as Rockstar Runway are extremely important.

Beautiful Lives Project presented the 2nd Annual Rockstar Runway event in Historic Downtown McKinney following the city's Red, White and BOOM! Parade. The Rockstar Runway spe cial abilities fashion show is an annual event recognizing unique and valuable individuals who may have been born with differ ences, but shine bright and are full of character and beauty.

“Rockstar Runway is a perfect example of how we can elimi nate obstacles and create an immersive experience that defeats isolation and brings awareness to the community through

Stacy credits the McKinney community for the huge success of Rockstar Runway.

“Mayor Fuller and his wife, Maylee, have created a very inclusive and supportive environment for non profits like ours to flourish here,” she says. "Beautiful Lives Project hosts events nationwide and the commu nity support we receive in McKinney is second to none.”

Local boutiques Faith & Feather, Landry Kate, LY Outfitters, Willow House, Littles by Willow House, Love Life Foundation, Rock A Boy, and Marie Gregory jumped at the opportunity to style the incredible models. Sixty volunteers, including special education teachers from numerous ISDs, local teenagers, and a large team from a local behavioral analysis services group, were crucial in keeping the backstage flowing smoothly.

hands-on involvement and volunteer opportunities,” says Stacy. “These events are meant to be fun, but the byproduct of them is always deeper conversations about the value of integrating individuals with disabil ities and special needs into the workforce.”

Veteran models Kalyn, Rickey, Molly, and Jacob from Hugs Cafe and Hugs Greenhouse dazzled spec tators with their signature moves while mentoring the new models on how to perfect their runway walks and find their groove.

17| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/ALLENTXSEPTEMBER 2022

Planning for the 3rd Annual Rockstar Runway is already in the works. With the continued support of sponsors and the incredible McKinney community, the Beautiful Lives Project team has goals for growth and expanded reach of Rockstar Runway over the next 10 years. Those interested in becoming a sponsor may contact Stacy Apple at stacy@beautifullives.org. BeautifulLives.org

From its inaugural year in 2021, Rockstar Runway nearly doubled the model count from 25 in 2021 to 40 in 2022. Half of last year’s models returned, and the remainder were new models from across the Metroplex, with the youngest model being just 4-years-old.

Stacy says post-show, Beautiful Lives Project has been inundated with communication from sponsors and vol unteers about the impact of working side-by-side with the models and how it has changed the way they view the disabled and special needs community. She adds that it's perspectives like these that will allow the Beautiful Lives Project staff to increase programming that will help communities stop focusing on abilities and disabilities and start focusing on what’s possABLE.

is always a reason for everything. It is up to us to figure out what that is." LOCAL LIMELIGHT | LOCAL SERVICES18

I was born and brought up in Mumbai, India and came to the US at the age of 13 and started high school. To say I experienced culture shock is an understatement, but I have always been someone who figures things out. After gradu ating from high school and getting a doctorate in pharmacy, I practiced in the retail setting. Being in retail made me miss the important transitions in my patients’ lives due to the sheer volume of prescriptions that needed to be filled. It hardly left any time to actually counsel patients. Western medicine is heav ily focused on symptomatic treatment and does not look at the root cause of any prob lems. Therefore, patients’ triggers went unno ticed and untreated. We give people the correct advice: lose weight, reduce stress, eat well—but we are not showing them the path to get there. This is when I realized that Western medicine doesn’t focus on prevention, so none of us are trained to help prevent diseases. In 2016, I started my own consulting company. I wanted to help people live a healthier life, reduce the number of medications they were taking, and help them be healthy naturally. In 2019, I started my own pharmacy and continued helping my patients in the best way I knew. We are the kind of pharmacy that prides ourselves on not just adding everyone on autofill year after year. We are constantly working with our patients and their medical teams to help them understand their bodies so that they can take positive steps towards long term health, potentially helping them eliminate the medications entirely.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL CLIENT’S STORY YOU HAVE ENCOUNTERED?

Dr. Pattani, owner of Allen Pharmacy & Wellness, equips frustrated, stressed professionals with tools to stop feeling fatigued, anxious, and hope less, and instead feel sustained energy, in con trol, and healthy so they can live their best life yet.

I love this question. One inspirational story that stands out is from during my hospital work. I was given the opportunity to precept some pharmacy students, and we needed to counsel a patient that was started on a blood thinner. Our patient was a 42-year-old female who was admitted because she had multiple clots all over her body. While we were treating her with infusions that would dissolve these clots, her body kept forming new ones—even while she was hospitalized. No one knew the reason for these new clots developing so unexpectedly, and therefore this patient was likely going to be on warfarin therapy for the rest of her life. As I was counseling this patient on proper use of warfa rin, its side effects, drug interactions, etc., she happened to pour herself some liquid from a jar. I questioned her on the contents of her cup as it did not appear to be water. This is when the patient revealed that she was drinking green tea and had completely stopped drinking plain water. She only drank green tea. She further revealed she drank about three to four full jars of green tea every day. Apparently, her family was also bringing it for her from home while she was hospitalized. Aha moment! Our jaws dropped as the root cause of her clots was finally revealed. We immediately paged all of her doctors to get her the appropriate treatment, and it turned out she would not need to be on warfarin for the rest of her life. Through further conversations, she

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | LOCAL SERVICES revealed that no one had asked her about any dietary changes and that she felt since green tea was natural, she did not think it was important to tell anyone. This patient was lucky—very lucky. Imagine she left the hospital on green tea and warfarin, but someday decided to stop drinking green tea. She would have likely suffered an internal bleed and possibly died from massive internal hemorrhage. I definitely learned an important lesson that day—there is always a reason for everything. It is up to us to figure out what that is. WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED IN YOUR CAREER? There is no such thing as failure in life. Every situation either brings us closer to success or gives us important lessons. My functional medicine business coach and mentor said this, and it really hit home. I do everything with heart, so when something didn't work out, it was very difficult for me to face those failures. Once I understood this advice, I no longer saw these situations as failures. I now look for the lesson and focus my energy on understanding the concerns and moving forward. 1. Put butter in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 20 sec ond increments, stirring in between, until melted. Add 1 cup brown sugar and stir until well incorporated. Pour into bottom of a greased 9-by-13-inch pan, spreading mixture evenly.

6. Upon removing from ovenw, sprinkle with powdered sugar. Be sure to scrape up all the bottom sticky goodness. If desired, serve with pure maple syrup.

3. Lay a single layer of Texas Toast in pan, cutting pieces to fit if needed. Spoon 1 cup of egg mixture evenly over bread. Sprinkle with half of the brown sugar/cinnamon mixture. Repeat with second layer, using up the rest of egg mixture over that layer, and ending with a sprinkling of brown sugar/cinnamon mixture. Try to get the custard evenly soaked into the bread slices.

4. Cover tightly and chill overnight in fridge.

5. Bake at 350 degrees F for 40-45 minutes on lower middle rack — covered for the first 30 minutes, and uncovered after that.

“It’s incredible how freeing and how limitless you become when you learn how to get out of your own way and to think differently about what you are capable of.”

The 40 Over 40 Project focuses on beautiful lux ury portrait sessions. Jodie wanted these women to be able to step outside of their comfort zones in a place that was built just for them. Additionally, she wanted to share their stories with the com munity and with the world by honoring them and celebrating them with the 40 Over 40 Project. All 40 of these women are interviewed and featured in Aven Willow’s Portraits Magazine and are cel ebrated at the Goddess Gala! Each one of the 40 women has her portrait enlarged and on display at the Gala with their journey highlighted in an inter view format. It is a beautiful celebration of women, their beauty, their strength, and their wisdom! Their families, friends, and our community are able to come together and celebrate these incred ible women who stepped outside of their comfort zone and shared themselves in such an incredible way with the community. “The biggest challenge I would say is actually your own personal mindset. A lot of the limitations that we experience are things that we actually put on ourselves,” Jodie shared. “It’s incredible how freeing and how limitless you become when you learn how to get out of your own way and to think differently about what you are capable of.”

Read Jodie’s FULL INTERVIEW on our Facebook Page, Allen City Lifestyle.

Jodie went through a complete rebrand of her busi ness and decided it was all or nothing when it came to shooting beautiful studio and magazine-style portraits. With the rebrand and new climate of the business, she had to choose a new name. It was only appropriate that she name her new studio after her youngest daughter, Aven Willow. Jodie aspires to change the way a woman views and feels about herself. She wants her subjects to be awed by themselves. Jodie’s desire is for her clients to see the very best in their portraits and to be awestruck. With this goal in mind, Jodie started a special project inspired by the women she had worked with over the past 10 years. She noticed that the women who were 40 and above had tremendous beauty and wisdom to share with the world, but they were normally putting everyone else first. They were getting portraits taken of their kids while hiding themselves in the back of the family photos. According to Jodie, “A lot of times it’s hard for women to really decide what their value is or to even just ask for what they want or what they deserve.” She knew these women needed a special reason to be photographed, seen, heard, and celebrated.
