1. WHAT IS YOUR MISSION AND WHY DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS? In 30 years of experience as a physical therapist, I have found that pelvic health patients have limited access to specialized care. I started my business to create a more efficient, comprehensive, and holistic approach to pelvic health. I am a pelvic health geek and have multiple certifications. I am continually learning the best ways to provide treatment using multiple modalities in a safe and empowering environment.

2. WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE SEEK TREATMENT FOR PELVIC HEALTH?

4. WHAT SERVICES DO YOU ENCOURAGE FOR PREVENTIVE CARE?

There are many different conditions that are connected to pelvic health, some are obvious, and some are not.

Some obvious ones are bladder incontinence and urgency, interstitial cystitis, pelvic pain, and pelvic organ prolapse. However, constipation, digestive issues, pain with intimacy (dyspareunia), post-partum care, pregnancy, menopausal conditions, back pain, hip pain, tailbone pain (coccyx pain), and nocturia are conditions that can be closely related. So, the answer is to seek help when you suspect a problem or experience a beginning symptom - even if just occasionally, or after your 6-week post-partum check-up, or after your first hot flash, or when you experience your first bladder leak, or heartburn, or headache, etc. It’s all connected!

We pride ourselves in treating the whole person and are committed to helping reduce your symptoms and helping you achieve your physical goals. We encourage every mom who’s had a baby to come in for a post-partum check-up. New Mexico just passed an initiative called the 4th Trimester Memorial. It highlights the need for all moms to receive post-partum physical therapy after their 6-week appointment with their birth practitioners. We help moms manage C-Section scars, perineum tears, pelvic pain, bladder leakage, and guided return to core strengthening.

Perimenopausal to menopausal women can go through big changes in pelvic health, strength loss, and digestive issues. We provide specialized treatments and exercises before the problems get harder to manage.

We also offer information classes and exercise classes for preventative care.

3. HOW LONG UNTIL SOMEONE FEELS A DIFFERENCE FROM PELVIC HEALTH VISITS? How fast someone can experience relief has many variables. There are lots of conditions that we care for, each may have a different set of issues. Because we are skilled at identifying and prioritizing common factors that cause symptoms many of our patients see results in a couple of visits. Many symptoms can even be changed with simple dietary, lifestyle, or exercise. One of our recent patients had residual heartburn 8-9 months post-pregnancy. We treated her with a specialized manual therapy and within 2 visits she had mostly returned to normal.

Another patient suffered from uncontrollable leakage for many years after a hip surgery.

We evaluated the pelvic muscles that were creating issues, and within the first appointment, she saw an almost 50% improvement in her incontinence.

5. WHAT IS THE ONE STEREOTYPE YOU WOULD LIKE TO DEBUNK ON PELVIC HEALTH? There are many pelvic health myths that need to be dispelled. One of the biggest is that Kegel exercises can solve all pelvic conditions. The reality is pelvic muscles don’t function in isolation, and continual pelvic muscle squeezes are often counterproductive. Pelvic muscles can be overused and can be painful. Kegels will only make it worse.

It is no longer the only tool in our toolbox. Pelvic health assessments and treatment now encompass the neighboring body parts (hips, spine, and even down to the feet). We now know we cannot simply Kegel the pelvic health problem away.

Have you ever looked in the mirror and said, “new year new me?” The thought of transforming yourself being so exciting but the thought of entering a gym being scary and uncomfortable. I had the pleasure of speaking with Rosemary Pagliaro-Certified Pound Instructor at YHWH Health & Fitness.

The first thing Rosemary said was “Give yourself Grace! Change is scary, especially if you have never looked at a treadmill, been to a gym, or taken a fitness class before. What I like to remind everyone is that we all started somewhere. For those just starting out, I try to alleviate the feeling of being uncomfortable by telling them how I felt when I first started, by relating to what they are going through.

It is scary, it is uncomfortable, but they have taken that first step...

walking through the door ready to face whatever comes their way.

That is the true key, taking the first step to health and wellness.”

Starting your fitness journey does not have to be entering a weight floor or going to a cardio machine. Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing.

Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet.

A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.

You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it.

You can choose to be a flexitarian which means you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet.

If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products.

There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!

Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder to stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like.

Plant based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies.

Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach.

Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste.

Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low b12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin b12.

A meat free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx.
