According to Cameron Berenger-Russell, Marketing Director at Sandia BMW, “BMW owners are fanatics. They love the handling and the performance. It’s the definition of luxury.”

Cameron says, “The most universal thing we hear from customers is that when they come here, they don’t feel any sales pressure at all. The cars sell themselves. What we sell is the service experience.”

The long stretches of highway...and the occa sional need to pass a semi on Interstate 25... make a car with a lot of horsepower and a quiet luxury ride desirable on the lengthy trips across New Mexico. At Sandia BMW and MINI, they sell two auto brands that have a storied history of performance and luxury.

When customers enter the BMW show room, they are immersed in a glowing white atmosphere of modernist design. There is a stylish coffee bar where customers can lounge while their cars are being serviced. There’s also a BMW parts shop that sells accessories and logo clothing. It’s an inter esting place to wait on your car. Cameron told us, “We hold ourselves to a higher standard of service. We aspire to make it an experience. We also have BMW Genius. Some of these cars have facial recognition,

There’s a lot about “MINI motoring” in their signage and marketing message because MINI owners tend to drive just for the fun of zip ping around in a fast little car with incredible handling. Some models have All Wheel Drive which makes them particularly ideal for New Mexico’s many dirt and gravel roads.
Sandia BMW and MINI has been around for more than 35 years. They also sell the legend ary line of BMW motorcycles, known for their winning history in motorsports.
Frankie also said, “You get community when it comes to MINI. The rules of the road ask that we always park next to another MINI, always wave to other MINIs, and never stop custom izing. There are so few brands that people get so emotionally attached to.“

His father, from Oxford, England, was an Indy Car Pit Manager before retiring in the early 2000s. Cameron says his father instilled in him a passion for performance cars. Next door to the BMW showroom is the MINI dealership. Many consumers in the U.S. think that the MINI is just an economy car and are not aware of its reputation in Europe where it is an icon of the rally circuit. Frankie Irwin, Sales Manager at Sandia MINI, told us, “It’s true that MINI started as an answer to an economical question, but it was legendary British race car driver John Cooper that saw the rally potential in the little car. With a perfectly low center of gravity and a wheelbase to match, the MINI is the epitome of fun on a track.” MINIs have also always had a celebrity follow ing; George Harrison, Mick Jagger, Enzo Ferrari, and Steve McQueen all owned MINIs, and it was voted European Car of the Century by 130 of the world’s leading automotive journalists.

LOCALS ONLY | ENTERTAINMENT
Every now and again something comes along in our cool city that really must be noticed. For too long, movies have been made here without a big film festival to celebrate this creative community. But for the last decade, one festival stands out that a lot of folks don’t really know about, which is wild! This summer, I sat down with the founder, Ivan Wiener, and discovered so much more about the Albuquerque Film and Music Experience.
ARTICLE BY RON WEISBERG 18
MR. IVAN WIENER, YOU RUN A MAJOR FILM AND MUSIC FESTI VAL HERE IN ALBUQUERQUE, AFMX. BUT YOUR STORY THAT GETS YOU HERE GOES WAY BACK. HOW DID THIS ALL BEGIN?
When I was 13, I asked my dad for a bike. He said, you want a bike, get a job. So, I eventually paid my way through college detail cleaning cars. I went to the office with a chunk of money where they thought I was a drug dealer… So, long story short, I ended up working at the Watergate Hotel. Talk about prestige… I met everyone from Michael Jackson and Prince to Kings and Queens from around the world. I built a reputa tion of having the best service. So, one day I happen to be backstage at an Ozzy Osborn con cert and I meet Dennis Hopper. He was impressed I was head Concierge at the Watergate. Fast forward, I moved to New Mexico and became head concierge at Hotel Tamaya where Dennis was filming “Swing Vote”. Dennis asked me how much it would take to work for him instead of the hotel, and that was the history of my time in the hotel industry. Through Dennis, I learned everything

It’s interesting. Yes, there is a huge economic impact (15 million over the past 10 years) but this festival at its core is about changing lives. When Jeff Bridges flew home in 2016, he gave me a big bear hug and said: Ivan, you have exceeded my expectations on what this festival does for people.
THIS IS THE TEN-YEAR ANNIVERSARY. WHERE ARE YOU NOW?
LOCALS ONLY | ENTERTAINMENT about entertainment. That led to me being a key player in the film industry. In 2012 Ann Lerner asked if I could start up a film festival in Albuquerque. We were the number one city for making movies, but we had no major film festival.
THAT’S AMAZING. SO, FOR THIS YEAR, CAN YOU GIVE US A RUN-DOWN OF YOUR DEFINING EVENTS?
Absolutely. You really can’t miss the Master Class in Documentary Filmmaking with Chris Schueler. Also, “How to make it in the music world today.” This panel consists of: Chris Gero, Founder/Vice President of Yamaha Entertainment Group, Bob Divney(The Artists Cooperative), and Moogie Canazio(Emmy/Grammy Winning). These guys know what it takes to build a successful music career.
On Friday the 16th, Stewart Lyons, Executive and Line Producer of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, will be teaching basic line producing in his two-hour conversation. Also, Fearsome Femmes of Horror Films, with Dee Wallace, (from ET), Deborah Voorhees (Actor in Friday the 13th, Producer/Director) and Monique Candelaria who is a local horror actress. Another amazing cen ter-stage conversation is “How to Write your TV Pilot with Joshua Michael Stern.” He is a prolific showrunner that worked on “Graves” and was director/writer of “Jobs”. It’s important to know what networks are looking for and how to execute. Also, Christopher Lockhart is coming with “The Inside Pitch”. Later that Saturday we will have a project pitch session with him and 4 pros. That’s right! New Mexico filmmakers have an exclusive opportunity to pitch their projects. Finally, the New Mexico shorts program will be our closing screening. Oh, I almost forgot, before that, we are doing an amazing intimate conversation “From PA to WGA, Getting it Done With Joshua Freedman.” He is going to lay it all out for everyone on how to make it in the film industry.
Talking with Ivan made me realize just how much we’re sleeping on AFMX. Tell your friends and family. There’s a real experience coming in September, for film and for music! 20

The Spaceship house, also referred to as, The Bug House, is in the Nob Hill area of Albuquerque. Built in 1984 by architect Bart Prince, this house has become a hot spot for visitors. A very intriguing sight to behold, the house is made from different types of metals, woods, and tile. With dinosaurs and other sculptures, the property is surrounded with pieces of art which leads to the biggest piece of art, the home. Inspired by many art ists, Bart learned from Bruce Goff whom he shares a piece of work with at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

What is important to remember when staging your home to sell?
New Mexico’s signature style is Southwestern, but because of our rich cultural heritage, there are many different styles within that to focus on! We can pull inspiration from Native American and Spanish art and influences, as well as playing with desert themes. Some “classic” New Mexican decor items include kiva ladders and fireplaces, exposed raw wood such as ceiling beams, and adobe architecture.
WHAT’S Your DESIGN STYLE?
• Keep everything light and bright, including paint and curtains! Light colors open your home up to make it appear bigger and makes for great photos.
30
Selling your home is always an emotional experience. It can be hard to remove your emotional attachment to your home, make changes, and see it through the buyer’s eyes.
IS THERE A DECORATING STYLE THAT SPEAKS UNIQUELY TO NEW MEXICO?

WHEN DESIGNING ON A BUDGET, WHERE IS A GOOD PLACE TO SEARCH FOR INSPIRATION AND RESOURCES?
• Packing starts now! Remove everything you can except for the items needed to declutter your home and create a beautiful, welcoming environment for potential buyers.
• Remove all personal items, especially family photos. Potential buyers want to envision themselves in the home!
• Begin with a home that has been deep cleaned! A clean home is the foundation for your stagers to work on.
