money sense

Are You the “Family Bank”? When to say yes — and how to say no — if family members turn to you for financial support. provide it. “We create budgets for such things as travel or shopping, so why not for family giving?” asks Ben Storey, director of Retirement Thought Leadership at Bank of America.

Almost every family has one: the person family members call on when money is tight and they need a helping hand. The more financially responsible you are, the more likely you are to be considered “the family bank.” If you’re that person, have you ever wished you could just say no, even if you feel helping out financially is the right thing to do? Maybe you have other priorities to deal with or you doubt the money will be used wisely. Or you’re convinced that your kids will learn more by saving for that desired purchase — whether it’s a house, a car or a fancy new smartphone — on their own. Naturally, you’ll always want to be there for your family members when they need you, but there are times when it does make sense to politely say no, even to those closest to you. If you’re considered “the bank” in your family, here are four useful tips. 4 Tips for Managing Family Financial Requests 1. Start talking about money with your children when they are young. “Set up regular family meetings to discuss life skills, including the earning, saving, spending, investing and sharing of money. What role does money play in your family’s life? How do your financial decisions express your family’s values?” says Valerie Galinskaya, managing director within the Merrill Center for Family Wealth™. “From a young age, encourage children to ask questions about the decisions you’re making so that they can begin to understand the reasoning behind them and develop sound money management habits of their own.” With that background, they may have more realistic expectations if they do someday find themselves in a financial bind and consider asking you for help. 2. Create a budget for giving. Even if you pass on your own sound money management habits, there are bound to be times when relatives will need your help, and you’ll want to be in a position to

Storey advises that you determine how much you can commit to this purpose without disrupting your retirement planning and current living needs. When you have that figure, consider your other priorities. Are there any lifestyle changes you may need to make in order to keep giving to family during tough times? Most important, before you give, be sure to set aside an emergency fund for yourself to ensure that you will have a comfortable cushion in retirement. 3. Set firm guidelines for saying yes. Decide in advance under what circumstances you would feel comfortable giving or lending money. “If you’re going to make a gift of the money, think about using the occasion as a teaching moment,” suggests Storey. Without sounding preachy or judgmental, try to explain to your relative how you’ve put yourself in a position to provide this assistance. Have you kept your debt under control, for instance, or lived within your means or avoided high-interest credit cards? “For young adults in the family, this could be a valuable lesson,” he says. “If you expect to be paid back, create a loan document,” recommends Joe C. Schmieder, principal consultant of the Family Business Consulting Group, based in Chicago. This may include details on how frequently repayments will be made and whether interest will be charged. If the family member has asked you to invest in a business, request a business plan or other formal details on how the money will be used. “It’s important that the recipient understands your terms,” Storey says.

that this philosophy helped your family build its wealth and that any loan or gift decisions will be made based on your core values, such as a strong work ethic, pride and selfsufficiency. If you’re dreading the prospect of refusing a request, prepare your reasons beforehand so that you can explain them unemotionally. When you can’t afford to give, outline the reasons for your decision. When a family business is involved, notes Schmieder, it’s possible that your relatives don’t understand the company’s financial limitations. “Not everyone may be aware, for instance, that company owners have an obligation to reinvest their profits into their businesses to maintain growth,” he says. Use this opportunity to explain that the company’s profits aren’t a ready source for gifts or loans. As you consider each request, it’s always important to remember that gifts or loans to family members will have a direct impact on your retirement planning. There might be an unwritten fifth rule, says Storey: “Beware of being overly generous, or you could end up needing financial help yourself.”

4. When you must say no, avoid making it personal. Instead of blaming family members for their financial troubles or questioning their plans, develop a basic philosophy that applies to everyone. Explain

It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions pivot around becoming healthier, improving financial wellness, and spending more time with the people we cherish. Whatever they may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is an important first step. We have curated bits of wisdom and inspiration from experts to help you achieve more this year. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year. NEW YEAR, NEW MONEY HABITS HOW TO STICK WITH IT IN 2022 ARTICLE BY OLGA MELANCON

If you’re like most people, you likely start each year with a list of resolutions to help you improve various aspects of your life. For example, your list may include resolutions to help you become more physically fit, further your career growth and enhance meaningful relationships. Another popular category of resolutions often centers around financial health. If the latter is one of your typical resolutions, there’s a good chance that your list of new year goals looks the same, year after year ... after year. Yes, it’s easy to develop ideas you believe can improve your finances by year’s end, but maintaining those resolutions and making them a reality is entirely another story. Spend less, save more, pay down debt — how can you make 2022 the year you actually stick to these and other financial resolutions? Below, we’ve compiled a list of tips that can help you keep your financial resolutions throughout the new year and beyond. CONTINUED >

SET MEASURABLE GOALS. Don’t just resolve to be better with money this year. Set realistic, measurable goals to help you stay on track and ensure you’re making progress. For example, you can resolve to decrease your spending by a certain amount when you hit the mid-year point. You might decide to trim your spending in a specific category by a set percentage or make it a goal to pay all your bills on time for the entire year. Bonus tip: To make it easier, keep those goals SMART: Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time-based

SPEND MINDFULLY. Creating a budget can take some time and lots of number crunching, but it’s not the real challenge of financial wellness. The hard part comes when you have to stick to that budget and make it part of your lifestyle. Unfortunately, spending money before consciously thinking about the purchase is one of the top reasons many don’t end up sticking with their budget. Resolve to be more mindful of your spending this year, which means thinking about what you’re doing before swiping that card or handing over that cash to the cashier. Please take a moment to think about what you’re purchasing, how much you’re paying for it, and whether you actually need it.

WRITE IT DOWN. Nowadays, people rarely use pen and paper, so writing down New Year resolutions can seem obsolete, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen. According to science, the act of putting your financial goals into writing will help imprint them into your memory. Plus, you’ll have a list of your resolutions to reference throughout the year to help keep you on track. Bonus tip: Writing doesn’t need to be physical to make it count. You can use a goal-tracking app that allows you to record, track and reference your resolutions at any time with just a few quick clicks. Sticking to your financial resolutions isn’t always easy. Follow the tips outlined here to make 2022 the year you truly get your finances into shape. Many local institutions, like Rio Grande Credit Union, offer financial wellness coaching to help you meet your goals. In addition, shop around for lowrate loans and higher-rate deposit accounts and benefits to save more money. Visit RioGrandeCU.org for more tips and tricks to financial wellness.

Bonus tip: To make this easier, calculate how much of your work-time you’re “spending” when you make a large purchase. Is it worth the price and the effort it took to earn that amount?

PARTNER UP WITH A FRIEND. According to MyFitnessPal.com, dieters who share their food diaries with a buddy lose twice as much weight. Incorporating accountability is a fundamental technique used in psychology to improve motivation to adhere to goals. When we know we have to answer to someone else we are more likely to stick to our resolutions — including financial resolutions. Choose a friend in a similar financial bracket as you are and who has a comparable relationship with money. Additionally, it helps if they have similar financial goals to work towards together. Set up a weekly time to review progress (or regression) you each have made. Make sure you both come prepared with details and proof to show how you have handled your money.

3 BIOHACKS TO TRY NOW EFFECTIVE LOW-TECH HACKS TO LEVEL UP.

We found some of the most effective and straightforward biohacking techniques to help you optimize your energy, strength, and mental clarity. Make one, or all a habit to be the best version of yourself each day.

1. Contrasting Showers Rotate 20 seconds of cold water exposure with 10 seconds of hot water X10. Exposure to cold therapy causes mitochondrial biogenesis (increases mitochondria in your cells). More mitochondria equal greater amounts of energy and an overall boost to your metabolism. Contrasting exposure also increases circulation and helps wake your brain.

2. Earthing/Grounding Our environment can overload us with positive ions that negatively affect our health. Earth has a negative charge so connecting with the earth, like walking barefoot, can help us discharge our excess energy and enable a healing effect at the cellular level.

3. Gratitude for Better Sleep Sleep is the ultimate biohack that resets the brain. Practicing gratitude before sleep will slow and anchor the mind to the present moment and deactivate any lingering fight-orflight response from the day.

BIOHACKING What is it and how can it unleash my potential?

Be as good as you can be for as long as you can do it Biohacking is not a new concept. Throughout time, humans have experimented with ways to improve and optimize their mental and physical abilities. Likewise, athletes have always sought novel methods to attain peak performance to give them an edge over their competition. However, in more recent years, optimizing human performance has grown into a lifestyle for individuals yearning to maximize their potential and live limitlessly. Dave Asprey is the father of biohacking and Bullet Proof Coffee. At an early age, he was experiencing many poor health conditions. His unhealthy state prompted him to search for novel remedies, which eventually led him to conclude that humans could strategically and scientifically hack their biology to become healthier in every way and even drastically add years to their lives. Biohacking is like an art and science of self-experimentation to biologically upgrade to the best version of oneself. Many of us utilize biohacks every day. For example, you might drink coffee or jump into a cold shower in the morning to stimulate your brain and body. This is an example of a low-tech biohack. On the flip side, the vastly growing high-tech biohacking industry is continually experimenting with biology and technology to find new and better methods to tap into human potential. In Albuquerque, a few places might offer one or two biohacking options. Optimum Human Performance Center is an all-inclusive wellness center and co-working space where scientifically-driven lifestyle interventions, or hacks, are available to help members' maximize wellness objectives. Owner Matthew Finkelstein's vision was to create a space for those individuals who genuinely want to invest in and activate their best selves. Optimum's members aren't just athletes. The center attracts high performers like CEOs and even celebrities. “PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!” MEET MATT FINKELSTEIN FROM OPTIMUM HUMAN PERFORMANCE CENTER - HELPING OTHERS ENGINEER THE BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES.

28

H OT SP OT | L IFE + CU LTURE

Matt Finkelstein is the founder and chief captain of Optimum Human Performance Center. During his sophomore year of high school, his sisterwas diagnosed with late-stage Hodgkin's disease and was the only patient in her treatment cohort to survive this illness. It was then that Matt understood "western medicine isn't perfect." This experience made him strongly question the standard of care, "How do we do better so there can there be better outcomes for more people?" The search to find a better way has driven his goals and accomplishments throughout his life. Matt has had a curious professional journey that has afforded him an extensive set of tools and knowledge. He has been a lawyer,

an airline pilot, an NNLP, a hypnotherapist, and a certified firewalking instuctor. Yes, firewalking instructor. Like most, he had deeply rooted beliefs in the laws of physics, but he was also fascinated by stories of individuals demonstrating superhuman abilities in extraordinary circumstances. To Matt, firewalking was one of those phenomena that made him ask," Is it possible to influence the laws of physics with one's mind?" So he decided to attend a 10-day retreat at Sundoor in California with firewalking expert Peggy Dylan to find out. Matt was expected to complete a firewalk every day. Before each walk, he would purposefully manipulate his thoughts and mental states and then observe how they impacted his experiences while traversing over hot coals. Matt noticed that he was less affected by the extreme heat when he imagined floating across the coals like air. The impact of this experience is that Matt now often challenges the status quo and has no problem "bending the rules" to see what is possible and makes sense. "We have the ability to access more potential. How do we do this and do it more often?" Optimum Human Performance Center exists to challenge and potentiate individuals to become the best versions of themselves for as long as possible in life. Therefore, there is an extensive focus on discovering what each member needs to succeed in their fitness journey and produce real results. With their state-of-the-art equipment and therapeutics, they can help individuals push past previous limits, recover efficiently and repeat the process better each time. Their expert staff wants to help members extend their potential and go above and beyond, providing impeccable service and, more importantly, excellent support. Matt has finetuned the "experience" and focuses on key variables to motivate members and prime them for success. Optimum draws like-minded, high-achieving individuals who want to be their best and create a synergy that positively impacts the larger community. Additionally, a coworking space exists at Optimum Human Performance Center to help those looking to maximize their time between work and wellness. Soon, the center will also house a cafe and offer foods that will provide optimal nourishment to members and patients from Southwest Women's Oncology, in the Optimum Human Performance Center. Matt is also the President of the United to Cure Cancer, a nonprofit fighting to eradicate cancer, raise awareness, and help those fighting the disease to have a better quality of life. Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
