Hats Off to Aiken Gents!
Welcome to the June Gent’s edition! As we assemble this issue in advance of its print and delivery, I'm writing this letter in April. Fresh off the March Madness and NCAA National Championships, it's only fitting to kick things off with jubilant cheers for the South Carolina Women’s Basketball team. If you had a conversation with me during basketball season, you likely know of my fervent allegiance to the team. With their recent national championship win and flawless season, there's much to celebrate.
In this issue, we enjoyed conversing with Freddy Ready, the Gamecock’s Director of Player Development and proud Aiken native, as he reflected on their remarkable, undefeated journey to clinch the national title.
Turning our attention to local talent, the USC Aiken Pacers Men’s Basketball team secured the title of Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Champions and earned a spot in the DII NCAA Tournament. We caught up with Head Coach Mark Vanderslice for an insightful post-season interview.
Shifting gears, we explored the world of automotive aficionados with Chris Swindle, the dynamic owner of Car Cave. With a job that takes him on adventures across the globe in pursuit of classic, unique and rare cars and trucks, Swindle shares a glimpse into his meticulously curated collection.
Finally, Rhumba Rum and Cigar Lounge celebrated its grand opening by welcoming a gathering of our esteemed advertising partners and friends for a memorable Guys’ Night Out. Rebecca Judy skillfully immortalized the evening, capturing the suave camaraderie and stylish flair of the gentlemen in attendance.
I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. See you next month!

Using the black and white of Scripture to
speak truth
into the gray areas of culture.
Jesus called the church to be in the world, to be involved and lead out in culture. Not to accept or embrace all aspects but to be involved and speak into the culture in a way that teaches His grace, paints a picture of His love for a broken world, and ultimately points them to hope.
For the believer, this podcast will hold up the truth of scripture against areas that might not be clear and inform our thinking and actions that will honor God.
If you’re not a believer or if you are just starting to explore the idea of faith in God, it’s hard to imagine that the Bible can offer clarity and guidance in your life. The world tells us that a book written thousands of years ago can’t help with parenting struggles, mental health, stress at work, or complex relationships. Grace in the Gray takes these gray areas and shares the black-and-white truths from the Bible in a relatable conversation so our thinking and actions can be informed in the midst of how the world tells us to exist.

A Gentlemen’s Night Out at Rhumba Rum & Cigar Lounge

Ron Turner, Theory 5 owner, and Kevin Ard, PA, enjoy conversation at the indoor bar.
As you step into Rhumba, you’re immediately struck by the opulent décor that transports you to a world of luxury. Plush lounges, a picturesque bar and intricate details adorn the space, creating an ambiance of sophistication and relaxation. The outdoor cigar lounge is a private oasis that beckons you with its inviting atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a hand-rolled cigar and mixed cocktail under the stars.
One of Rhumba's hallmarks is its in-house humidor, which boasts a vast and elite selection of cigars. The room is a work of art, and the fine craftsmanship that went into building it is breathtaking. The aromas in the humidor envelop you and tantalize your senses with promises of adventure and excitement. From well-known brands to exclusive blends, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Alberto’s passion for cigars is evident in every detail, ensuring that enthusiasts and newcomers alike will find their perfect smoke.
But Rhumba isn’t just about cigars; it’s a destination for rum connoisseurs and expertly crafted cocktails. Sip on meticulously prepared rum cocktails as you enjoy the Latin-infused tapas, each dish a culinary masterpiece inspired by flavors from their home. You can taste the authenticity of their recipes with each savory bite.
Live music adds to the ambiance, providing the perfect backdrop for an evening of relaxation and enjoyment. Whether you’re unwinding after a long day or celebrating a special occasion, Rhumba sets the stage for an unforgettable experience. With a variety of spaces, such as overstuffed couches, high-table seating or bar space, there is no lack of opportunities to make yourself at home. The Alberto’s have forged their familial vibe into every nook of Rhumba and filled it with a palpable welcoming presence. You may walk into this establishment a stranger, but you are guaranteed to leave a friend of the family.
A diverse group of gentlemen from various backgrounds recently embarked on a men’s night out at Rhumba, drawn by its reputation for excellence. Among them were local Aiken professionals from the medical field, real estate moguls, small business owners and advertising firm owners. Alberto gave the gentlemen an in-depth tour of the humidor while educating them about their selections. Once selections were made, it was time to enjoy beverages, cigars and conversation. these gentlemen found common ground in their appreciation for fine cigars, rum and captivating company.
One attendee, Ron Turner, owner of Theory 5, left his mark on Rhumba by hand painting a Winston Churchill mural inside. The iconic stateman’s love for cigars resonated throughout the lounge and was a perfect addition. The mural of Churchill is complimented by his famous quote, “Smoking cigars is like falling in love. First, you are attracted by its shape; you stay for the flavor, and you must always remember never to let the flame go out.” It’s a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy is intertwined with the cigar culture.
For patrons seeking to elevate their Rhumba experience, the Alberto’s offer monthly care packages and cigar memberships. These exclusive offerings provide access to curated selections, ensuring you can indulge your passion fully.
The next time you’re enjoying an evening stroll through downtown, make sure you carve out time to visit Rhumba Rum & Cigar Lounge. COURTESY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
18.7 million people tuned in to watch the University of South Carolina Gamecocks take down the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship. Interestingly, the national champs have an Aiken connection. Freddy Ready, an Aiken native, is the Director of Player Development for South Carolina’s women’s basketball program. Ready attended Aiken High School where he played football, ran track and field and played a little basketball. He still has family in the area.
While a student during the Lou Holtz era at Carolina, Ready, unable to play due to blown-out knees, worked with the football team in the front office. He was open when Susan Walvius, the former women’s basketball coach, approached him about helping out with her team. He felt that working with a women’s program and learning the ins and outs of Title IV would be essential to achieving his long-term goal of being an athletic or assistant athletic director. What started as a one-year internship while he waited out a graduate assistant spot in football has turned into a 22-year career with one of the country’s most successful women’s basketball programs.

Winning Tradition
Ready worked part-time for Walvius and was in his first year as a graduate assistant when she left the program in 2008. Women’s basketball legend Dawn Staley replaced her and planned to bring a graduate assistant from Temple University with her. Fortunately for Ready that didn’t work out, and Staley gave him an opportunity to show what he could do for the program. In 2010, she created the Director of Player Development position for him.
One of his primary responsibilities is recruiting and training the Highlighters. This male practice squad helps prepare the team for each opponent it will face during the season and tournament. Ready looks for players with a high basketball IQ who can read defenses and run the offensive schemes the team expects to see from upcoming opponents. They are not on athletic scholarships but are treated like family and receive championship rings as an important part of the team.
He oversees academics for the student-athletes, manages the playbook and assists the coaching staff as needed.
The 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship is the Gamecocks’ third in seven years. Ready has logical reasons why each is his favorite:
2017 because you never forget your first child, and it was meaningful to do that for Coach Staley and with home-grown talent, A’ja Wilson. 2022 because that group was special and had been through a lot of adversity, being favored to win it in 2020 before the tournament was canceled due to COVID and losing a heartbreaker to Stanford in the semi-final in 2021.
And the third championship this year because it was unexpected after the 2023 team lost seven players, including all the starters.
Ready appreciates the opportunity to make a difference in young athletes' lives. Some athletes who come through the program are first-generation college students, and others are making a difference in their family's lives. He loves to watch them mature over the four years they are there and notes that if they come to Carolina, they will be graduating.
Ready did not have much chance to rest after cutting down the nets after the championship as he went into full-on summer camp mode. Registration began on April 5th, and by April 9th, 190 girls were on the Elite Girls’ Camp waiting list. He will also run the Little Gamecock Camp for boys and girls in 1st through 5th grades.

Anytime and a powerhouse in a surprising sport — competitive arm wrestling. In this exclusive Q&A, we delve into Cody’s journey from gym owner to arm wrestling aficionado. Cody sat down with us to share a little bit about his own experience in the arm wrestling world and what drew him to the sport.

“THE “NICE” PART IS KEY BECAUSE THERE ARE SAFE AND UNSAFE WAYS TO ARM WRESTLE. WHEN I’M PRACTICING WITH SOMEONE, I ALWAYS VALUE THEIR SAFETY OVER ME WINNING.”
HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN COMPETITIVE ARM WRESTLING?
It actually started because I was powerlifting, but I ruptured my left pec major. That muscle is one-third of a power lift, so I couldn't bench press for a while. I had to quit training and wanted to find something where I could compete with only one arm.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAIN AND COMPETE?
When it comes to competitive arm wrestling, you don’t compete as often as you do in powerlifting. I train about three times a week and do actual competitions a couple of times a year.
WHAT DOES TRAINING LOOK LIKE?
The main way you train is by actually getting in table time, where you practice by arm wrestling with other people. So the biggest piece for me was finding people I could train with who are better than me. Aside from table time, it’s pretty similar to training for powerlifting. I do exercises like wrist curls, pronation and supination lifts, neutral grip curls, etc.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEWCOMER TO ARM WRESTLING?
The most important thing is to find people you can practice with who are better than you and nice. The “nice” part is key because there are safe and unsafe ways to arm wrestle. When I’m practicing with someone, I always value their safety over me winning.

The Winning Ways of Coach Mark Vanderslice
42
Mark Vanderslice has been coaching the USCA Men’s Basketball team for an entire decade, and this last season was one for the books. The USCA team won the Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Title and finished the season with a 24-9 ledger under Vanderslice’s leadership. We sat down with Mark to find out more about the success of this past season and his values as a coach.
WHAT ARE SOME CORE VALUES YOU INSTILL IN YOUR PLAYERS AND TEAM?
We really want guys who line up with the intangibles of coachability, character and work ethic. Coachability primarily involves great listening skills and someone who buys into what we’re trying to do. Character, for me, is about having guys who are great decision-makers. How do they approach life, community, the game? Do they approach from a good decision maker standpoint? Are they going to bed at four the night before a game, are they eating poorly the day of the game? And work ethic is pretty simple — I want guys who work hard.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN RECRUITING NEW PLAYERS FOR YOUR TEAM?
The biggest, all-encompassing factor is that you have to be a competitor. That’s the box we check more than anything. We want somebody who’s a competitor in life, someone who wants to win on the court but also wants to win in the classroom, the community and all aspects of life.
WHAT WERE THE KEY FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE SUCCESS OF THIS PAST SEASON?
A lot of it was battle-tested experience. We had 12 returners from the previous year, a core group that already knew our system
and had a year under their belts. They had a good feel for me, and there was an ingrained culture in the locker room that carried over into the newcomers who joined.
WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE THIS PAST SEASON, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I think one of the most common challenges in sports is grappling with personal agendas within the locker room, and it’s not an inherently negative thing. You want guys who have goals. But they have to balance personal goals with team objectives. Like I said before, we want competitors in the locker rooms. That’s what recruitment is about. And when you’re a competitor, you find yourself willing to sacrifice and willing to be more flexible when it comes to the team objectives. Now, compared to challenges we’ve had in the past? That’s nothing. We had an unbelievable team in that locker room… great people, great human beings. Those are just normal coaching challenges.
WHAT LEGACY DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE WITH THIS PROGRAM?
The most important thing for me in terms of legacy is that I leave a lasting impression that I did for others more than for myself. When we start each year, we go through all of the guys, and I ask them this question, “Before we get started, why do you play basketball?” And before they answer, I let them process the question because it’s a deep one. And I answer the question of why I coach. The answer is threefold. First, it’s the competition — I love to compete. Second, it’s the relationships. And third, I want to help and serve each player in the name of the Lord.
