There's No Place Like Home!

Home is a small word that packs a lot of punch. It evokes childhood memories and is hopefully a place where you always feel welcome. Our homes are a refuge where we make memories with family and friends. It is also a reflection of our personal style.

My personal style is centered on comfort, color, whimsy and open spaces meant to entertain friends. I will not subject you to a look at my home style choices as much as I know you are dying to see my vintage collection of California Raisins. As in most things, I march to the beat of my own drum when decorating. Fortunately, we brought in some experts to help you discover and elevate your home style.

David and Carole Ann Hopkins, owners of Dogwood Construction, allowed us to photograph their gorgeous custom-built home, and the pictures are sure to inspire.

Fireside in downtown Augusta built its reputation by creating one-of-a-kind outdoor kitchens and living spaces. Recently, they have expanded their focus to luxury indoor kitchens featuring the finest appliances available. Owner Greig McCully gives us an inside look.

Sustainable flower farmer and garden designer, Kate Van Cantfort of Southerlee Farm and Design, offers some helpful tips for beautiful and sustainable spring gardens.

We also met certified "Plant Nerd" Ryan Williams of Grass Roots Yard Supply just in time for our spring planting.

Our homes become less of a sanctuary when they are overwhelmed with clutter. We consulted with home organization expert Daniella Sanchez of Mumz Helping Hands for advice on making our homes ship-shape!

It is time for me to put the finishing touches on this issue so that I can relax in my home.

See you next month!

BUILDING CUSTOM HOMES THROUGH COMMITMENT AND TRUST

ARTIST’S PALETTE | HOME + DESIGN

Started in 2012 by owner and general contractor, David Hopkins, and his wife and designer, Carole Ann, Dogwood Construction has made its place in Aiken as one of the best. Hopkins began his career building barns but the company has evolved

to also focus on custom-built and designed homes in the area. This husband/wife team provides an amazing support system throughout the process as both David and Carole Ann have a clear understanding of each project from start to finish and trust each other’s abilities and talents. David is still a very hands-on contractor; his love for building and creating sets him apart from others in the industry as he remains involved in the physical building of each project. Clients appreciate that level of care and commitment. Carole Ann

works from the design side of builds to extensively break down customer’s selections. Her goal is to make the process as simple and easy as possible and to think of everything so that nothing gets missed. The couple helps their clients work through decisions and issues that may arise, and they believe that “...having a customer who trusts the process and our intentions makes all the difference.”

ARTIST’S PALETTE | HOME + DESIGN 24

For those who are looking to start building a home, David and Carole Ann suggest that their clients start with house plans, get multiple quotes and be very thorough about what they want and need in their home. Research and preparation are important. Carole Ann also suggests, “...for anyone looking to build, update or just decorate, just go for it. If you like something, try it. You’ll be amazed at how you can transform your space by removing fear from the equation and just going for it.”

DECLUTTERING STRATEGIES FOR A STRESS-FREE HOME 28

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, our homes often bear the brunt of the hectic schedules we keep. Living in a cluttered and disorganized space can cause anxiety, stress and a constant sense of overwhelm. It's time to transform your living space from a disarray of belongings to a sanctuary of tranquility. Join us as we explore some decluttering strategies to create a stress-free home and catch up with a local gem, Daniella Sanchez, owner of Mumz Helping Handz, who knows all about the importance of organization.

TACKLE ONE SPACE AT A TIME

If you’re already feeling overwhelmed by the clutter in your house, the worst thing you can do is look at the whole house and try to get it all under control in one fell swoop. Instead, try to break it down room by room and tackle one space at a time. Choose one to start with — preferably a room that you spend a lot of time in. If it’s a room you’re in all the time, you’ll be more impacted by the lack of clutter and have even more motivation to keep going with the rest of the house. Try starting with the kitchen, living room or main bedroom, and give it your undivided attention. Even just an hour or two will make a huge difference in a relatively small space.

ROTATE SEASONAL ITEMS

When you’re trying to keep your home clutter-free and dynamic, one of the best strategies is to simply store things you don’t need out of the way. Prime real estate, like your main closet or a hallway closet, shouldn’t be overstuffed with Christmas decorations or summer clothes you won’t be able to wear for another four months. Try to rotate through seasonal items by putting off-season clothes, decor and accessories in a less noticeable area like a garage or attic.

ENSURE EVERYTHING HAS A PLACE

Once you’ve worked so hard to get things organized, make sure it stays that way. The more compartmentalized your physical stuff is, the easier it will be to maintain your organization moving forward. That’s why it’s so important to make sure there’s a designated place for everything. Now is a great time to pick up some cute but functional storage solutions that complement your home's aesthetic while keeping items organized. Ottomans with hidden compartments, wall-mounted shelves and baskets or boxes are all great ways to keep your stuff contained.

MAKE IT A HABIT

Having a decluttered, stress-free home isn’t a onetime activity — it’s an ongoing process. That’s why it’s absolutely vital to make tidying up and maintaining clutter a daily habit in your household. And one of the best habits to implement is the nightly reset. Every evening, try setting a timer for 30 minutes and use that time to get the house reset to its most organized and functional state. Load the dishwasher, clean the counters, sweep or vacuum, put away toys… the goal here is to get everything back in its designated area. And don’t try to tackle everything by yourself in those 30 minutes. The nightly reset is the perfect time for everyone in the house to pitch in.

DEATH

Be Still

A NEW NOVEL BY LOCAL AUTHOR

Every once in a while, you run across a person who has seemingly packed a hundred lives into one single lifetime. Local author David Wolman is one of those people. Here in Aiken, David was known for many years as a Physician Assistant in emergency medicine at Aiken Regional. But most of the patients who passed through had no idea that David also led a “secret” life as a successful novelist.

HOMETOWN HERO | LIFE + CULTURE 34

His very first published book, Little Boy Lost, came out in 1983. Since then he’s published many books, including several mysteries inspired by some of the all-time greats like Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. And now he’s got a new book to add to the list: Death Be Still . This mystery thriller revolves around identity theft, insurance fraud and (of course) murder. His next book, St. Vitus’ Dance, will also fall into the mystery genre and is inspired by his own experience in the medical field.

When it comes to the many paths and adventures he’s chosen through his life, David has this to say, “People sometimes look askance at others who do more than one thing in life. But, in my opinion, variety, whether in diet or life's work, is a healthy way of living. I am a curious person. I went to law school, worked as a journalist, published two best-selling novels, did post-graduate work in chemistry, became an emergency medicine Physician Assistant, was an Off-Broadway producer, founded a performing arts organization and created the Central New York Renaissance Faire. I believe every individual activity I participated in reflected positively on all of the others, a life's brew in which the sum of the parts was greater than the whole. And it's been a joyful ride.”

You can find Death Be Still by David Wolman on Amazon, or grab a copy at Aiken Center for the Arts.

Head into a Sustainable Spring

HELPFUL TIPS FOR A SUSTAINABLE GARDEN

Plant native wildflowers from seed or starts.

A great beginner goal to help declining bird and pollinator populations and beautify your garden is to have 30% of your yard host wildflowers.

Include habitats for good bugs and birds.

Our yards need to be balanced working ecosystems. We can use bug snugs, native bee hotels and designated brush piles to make safe homes for birds and bugs that are critical for a healthy yard.

Make better planters.

Improve your planter soil by filling the bottom third with sticks, twigs and leaf litter. This will require less soil and will break down over time to feed the soil with nutrients. Add those worm castings and mulch to your planter with locally sourced, undyed moss to help retain moisture.

Get comfortable with worms.

The famous fish bait, red wigglers, are hugely beneficial to your lawn, flower beds and gardens. You can add worms to your soil, begin a small worm farm or add worm poop, aka worm castings, to lawns and garden beds for healthy soil and plants without chemicals.

Don’t spray.

This is maybe the most difficult change but with the highest impact. Spraying adult mosquitoes does not help reduce population – removing standing water and using mosquito dunks do. Spraying our lawns removes critical food sources for birds and bats.
