LIFESTYLE LETTER
Hello 2024! Now that the Christmas decorations are put away and the last cup of eggnog enjoyed, it is time to focus our attention on health and wellness. It’s funny how that works. If you overindulged over the holidays like me, it might be time to hit the gym. Cody Melvin, the owner of Workout Anytime, gave us some training tips to jump-start our New Year's resolutions that we are excited to share with you. We spent some time with small business owners Mitch Hearne (Max Fitness) and Justin Fouse (Elevate Fitness Coaching). We got some insight into how they work together to provide a fitness experience for Aiken residents regardless of age or fitness level. You may know certified clinical herbalist Haley Maness as the mastermind behind Roots and Leaves, Handcrafted Herbal Remedies sold locally and in stores worldwide. Inside, you will be inspired by the story of her years-long journey for a diagnosis of a mystery illness and how that eventually led her to open Aiken Wellness Spa and Boutique. If you think you’ve spotted a new sign outside what once was TLC Medical Center, you are not imagining things. Last year, Steve and Amy Hibbitts purchased TLC and transformed it into Total Care Medical Center. Get an inside look at how they are bringing to life their vision of prioritizing patient care and forging genuine connections with their patients. I hope this new year brings you health and happiness, along with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. See you next month!

Exercise Tips from Workout Anytime’s Cody Melvin ARTICLE BY GAYLE BRYAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA WILLIAMS

G E T ACT IV E | FI TNES S
For many, the start of the new year means the beginning of a new commitment to exercise and healthy living. On the following pages, owner of Workout Anytime and personal trainer Cody Melvin, along with owner Sarah Melvin and employee Gabby Hunt, demonstrate exercises that form the basis for a well-rounded workout. Melvin advises three keys to keep proper form and avoid injury regardless of the exercise: brace the core, breathe through the diaphragm and maintain good posture by keeping the shoulders back. With that in mind, it is time to get started on those New Year’s resolutions!
2
1 1 . BA R BE L L S QUAT The squat targets the muscles in the lower body, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and calves. It engages the core and lower back muscles for stabilization. Adding a barbell increases resistance and intensity. The Barbell Squat is performed by placing a barbell across the trapezius muscles, gripping with both hands and lowering the body by bending at the hips and knees.
2 . SE AT ED DUM BBELL SHOULDER PR ESS The seated dumbbell press targets the shoulders. It helps develop the front and side deltoids, contributing to overall shoulder strength and aesthetics. Sit on a bench with a back support, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Lift the dumbbells to shoulder height, palms facing forward and elbows bent at a 90-degree angle. Press the dumbbells overhead by extending your arms fully. Keep your core engaged and maintain a neutral spine.
3 3. ROM A NIA N DEA DLIFT Known as the best core exercise, the RDL targets the hamstrings, glutes and core stabilizers. With a straight back and chest up, the barbell travels down the thighs, utilizing a hinge motion at the hips. The keys to a successful RDL are to stop lowering the barbell once you feel a stretch at the hamstring and to lower the barbell with a hinge motion, not the knees. CONTINUED >

5 5. TIRE FLIP CHEST PR ESS
6 4. R E AC T T R A I N I NG (Rapid Eccentric Anaerobic Strength and Core Trainer) Core and leg exercises are performed on a rotating platform, which requires bracing your core and allowing your lower body to absorb the movement. The reACT Trainer is unique to Workout Anytime and improves strength, balance and core stability with zero impact.
22
G E T ACT IV E | FI TNES S
The Tire Flip Chest Press is a two-person exercise that works the chest and triceps and provides endurance training and cardio. It is a time-based exercise that is performed until the form breaks down. Partners kneel on either side of a tire while utilizing their chest and arms to push it to their teammate, who catches it, lowers it to their chest and pushes it back.
6. CA R DIO Workout Anytime has different cardio options, but Melvin favors the Elliptical as best for joint health. Unlike the treadmill, there is no impact. The intensity is adjustable depending on fitness and works the upper and lower body. It is excellent for heart health and burning calories and fat.

STEP INTO THE
Fre q u e n c y B a r Step into The Frequency Bar Energy Spa, where the ambient glow of the Energy Enhancement System and Solfeggio sound frequencies set the stage for relaxation. Some feel pulsing waves or tingling; others feel a profound peace. In plush chairs, visitors spend two hours, as recommended by Dr. Sandra Rose Michael, inventor of the EESystem™. Whether meditating or quietly resting, the light and sound frequencies guide you into deep relaxation and sleep, promoting cellular repair. Post-session, receive Detox Bath Salts to enhance the detox process initiated upon entering. The complimentary salts complete the unique experiences reported by patrons, ranging from improved sleep to pain relief, increased energy and mental clarity. While several members have experienced benefits like increased strength, minimized neuropathy and overall better moods, individual responses vary. The salt bath, best enjoyed within 24 hours, aids in drawing out impurities released by the cells during the session. The journey extends beyond the session; a follow-up call offers continued support. Members often report unexpected positive shifts, like reduced cravings or deeper spiritual connections. The Frequency Bar Energy Spa provides a space for genuine wellness, an invitation to embark on a transformative self-healing journey. Together, the possibilities for well-being are boundless.

January is a time of new beginnings, resolutions and positive changes. Some of the most common goals fall under the umbrella of living a healthier lifestyle: lose weight, eat nutritiously, improve heart health, work out consistently and decrease stress. All of these and more can be achieved at Max Fitness Aiken.

Mitch Hearne, regional director and partner, along with Justin Fouse, owner of personal training company Elevate Fitness Coaching, work together to make Max a family-oriented fitness center where members’ health and fitness goals are a top priority. Originally from Nashville, TN, Hearne came to Aiken to play baseball at USC Aiken. After graduation, he started working for Gold’s Gym and soon became a manager using his passion for exercise and fitness. In December 2020, Hearne became a partner with majority owner Cliff Hall. They rebranded to Max Fitness in 2021. The gym has been a success ever since and continues to grow. As Hearne began to build the new Max, he saw the need for individualized training opportunities and reconnected with his long-time friend and business peer, Fouse. Fouse had years of training experience under his belt, and Hearne knew he’d be perfect to add personal
but that’s not the case at Max Fitness Aiken. The facility offers so much more to members than weights and treadmills. There’s a large pool available for swimming laps or taking the water aerobics classes. There is also a women-only gym area that offers a bit more privacy. The large group classes are popular and include Body Pump, a weight and repetition-centered class set to music, along with yoga, line dancing, Zumba, Silver Sneakers, Body Flow, and various spin classes. Teens who are 13 and older can work out at Max and set up sessions with trainers. Childcare is also available for working parents. Max offers every opportunity for members to come in and achieve their fitness goals. It’s also important at Max that members understand where they start physically and where they want to end up. “MAX ISN’T ANOTHER CORPORATE, BIG-BOX GYM.” to combine the physical fitness level and an internal health assessment. This helps clients set and achieve goals and make exercise, nutrition and health a lifelong journey. Hearne and Fouse are small business owners who are very involved in the Aiken community. Max Fitness sponsors community runs like the Palmetto Peach Run and Run United. They participate in Children’s Place events and Celebrity Waiter Night and run different fundraisers throughout the year. Max is more than working out to Hearne and Fouse. It is about creating lifelong relationships, helping people along their wellness journeys, and supporting the Aiken community. AIKEN WELLNESS S PA & B O U T I Q U E A Beacon for Holistic Healing
Just minutes from downtown Aiken, you will find a haven for holistic healing that awaits locals and visitors alike. The moment you walk through the doors of Aiken Wellness Spa & Boutique, you are bathed in natural sunlight, soothing aromas tickle your senses, and the calming presence of owner Haley Maness greets you. Haley’s story is about determination, self-discovery and the transformative power of holistic health practices. Before opening her health and wellness spa, she faced countless years of uncertainty and frustration as she battled a mysterious illness. Misdiagnosed multiple times, her symptoms
persisted and increased in severity, and her health continued to deteriorate for years. Haley took one last chance and scheduled an appointment with a holistically-inclined physician in Charleston, SC. This practitioner miraculously discovered the root cause of her ailment, Lyme Disease. This revelation marked a turning point in her life and set her on a path of holistic healing that would inspire her to establish her own center for healing. Having experienced the limitations of conventional medicine and the lack of holistic medicine therapies in Aiken, Haley saw the need for a space that provided opportunities for people to explore their paths to healing. Haley transformed her pain into a passion for helping others. She focuses on treating the whole person: mind, body and spirit, rather than merely addressing the symptoms. Her therapies and treatments are methods she has used herself as safe and non-toxic ways to improve health drastically. Aiken Wellness Spa & Boutique stands as a testament to Haley’s commitment to guiding others through the process of detoxifying their lives and surrounding themselves with an array of transforming holistic modalities. The spa offers several core services, including a lymphatic drainage vibration plate, ionic detox foot baths, an oxygen bar, brain tap, PEMF, acupuncture, the HaloIR, salt therapy, red light therapy, chromotherapy, meditation and infrared sauna combined and organic facials. These services are designed to promote balance, relaxation, and overall well-being. One of the unique practices that Haley emphasizes is the importance of personalized treatment plans. Her dedication to fostering a supportive environment includes educating individuals about the benefits of holistic therapies and providing all-natural remedies, wellness supplements, herbs, skincare, loose-leaf teas and more to partner with their journey toward healing. Haley stated, “If you’re not born with it, you can heal from it.” To facilitate a journey towards healing, the spa offers different membership packages to support a consistent plan in wellness and healthier lifestyle choices. Haley passionately shared one of her most recent success stories with an equestrian client. He experienced a severe fall from his horse and had been suffering without relief from chronic shoulder pain, decreased range of motion and inflammation. He started PEMF therapy, and after a few sessions, he was amazed to find a significant decrease in pain and improved range of motion. He was also able to get back to daily riding. Stories of healing like this are Haley’s reason for the spa. Haley’s remarkable journey and commitment to holistic wellness are empowering others on their paths to health and vitality. Through the Aiken Wellness Spa & Boutique, Haley is a beacon of inspiration for those searching for transformation in a holistic setting.

A JOURNEY FROM THE FOOTBALL FIELD TO THE PHARMACY
From Touchdowns
to Total Care ARTICLE BY NIKITA HANIF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA WILLIAMS

In the beautiful town of Aiken, a unique power couple focused on faith, family, and football has emerged. Meet Steve and Amy Hibbitts, the dynamic duo behind Total Care Medical Center, the former TLC Medical Center. Steve, head football coach for Lakeside High School, and his wife, Amy, an employee of TLC, have transformed the pharmacy into a hub of comprehensive healthcare in the community. As head coach, Steve Hibbitts is known for strategic plays and motivational prowess. His dedication to shaping young minds and fostering teamwork has proven invaluable in his new venture of owning and operating a pharmacy. Amy Hibbitts has been an esteemed employee of TLC and a friend of Zoom Heaton’s for years. When the opportunity arose to buy the pharmacy, the Hibbitts saw a chance to fulfill their lifelong quest of doing something special to impact their community’s healthcare landscape. In 2023, they took the leap, acquiring TLC and transforming it into Total Care Medical Center and J & L Compounding. The Hibbitts' vision for Total Care was simple yet profound: prioritizing patient care and forging genuine connections with their patients. Steve’s coaching background has played a crucial role in shaping the culture of the pharmacy. He brought principles of teamwork, discipline and leadership from the field into the heart of the pharmacy.

This couple's commitment to personalized patient care has become the cornerstone of Total Care. Unlike larger chain pharmacies, the Hibbitts and their staff take the time to get to know each patient, understanding their unique needs and health concerns. Steve’s coaching philosophy of getting to know each player's strengths and weaknesses has translated seamlessly into understanding the individualized needs of their pharmacy customers. Prescriptions are just the starting point for Total Care. Drawing from her extensive pharmaceutical and compounding expertise, Amy has helped expand their offerings involving compounding creams, durable medical equipment (DME), incontinence care, all-natural sleep support, dermatological and skincare options, hormone replacement therapy, and an extensive selection of the highest quality compression hose. These are just a few of the offerings that have quickly set Total Care Medical Center apart from other pharmacies in Aiken. One of the critical lessons Steve has brought from the field is the importance of effective communication. Clear communication is essential for accurate prescriptions and patient education in a pharmacy setting. Steve’s coaching strategies, such as team huddles, regular feedback sessions, and furthering employee education, have fostered an environment where staff and clients have flourished.

The Hibbitts’ dedication to their patient’s care extends beyond the walls of the pharmacy. Amy shared a touching story of providing a specialized scooter for a customer suffering from severe pain and limited mobility due to neuropathy. He wanted to be able to go on vacation with his wife but couldn’t without this specific scooter. Steve and Amy spent countless hours finding the correct product and hand-delivered it to the couple. Amy called a few weeks later to see how their trip went and was thrilled to hear they had an amazing time. Two weeks later, Amy received a call from the spouse thanking them for finding the scooter. Her husband had unexpectedly passed away and she was so thankful that they went the extra mile to find the scooter that allowed them to build memories before his passing. Service like this is why Total Care has become synonymous with compassionate care and their clients have embraced their new approach to healthcare. Steve and Amy have successfully merged the worlds of football and pharmacy and are creating a legacy they hope to one day pass on to their children. Their son, Jake, has already spent time helping in the pharmacy, especially with deliveries, and patients have become quite endeared to him. When asked about the future, Steve and Amy were bright-eyed as they discussed the progression of a minute clinic, an increased social media presence and continued growth supporting local vendors of holistic products in their pharmacy. They also shared how they have enjoyed expanding their services by providing medications for local animal and equine veterinarians. The Hibbitts’ story proves the transformative power of dedication, teamwork and community spirit. From touchdowns to total care, their journey has not only improved the health of Aiken’s residents but also exemplified how passion and leadership can create a lasting impact on an entire community.
