Merry Christmas, Aiken! It is nearly impossible to capture the magic of an Aiken Christmas in a 52-page magazine, but we certainly did our best. Our December content springboarded off a suggestion from City Lifestyle to “feature a town near you that does Christmas really well.” We didn’t have to look far because no one does Christmas better than Aiken. In this issue, we feature several iconic Aiken holiday events that will make you feel like you are living in a Hallmark movie! One of the first activities that marks the start of the holiday season is procuring the family Christmas tree. We went behind the scenes at the Clarks Hill Christmas Tree Farm with owners Charlie and Nancy Mills to get the inside scoop on the year-round effort that goes into making the Christmas tree magic happen. Speaking of magic, we visited Santa Robby to find out exactly what motivates him to spend the season bringing hope and joy to Aiken’s children and adults alike. The Buy Aiken Red Ticket Campaign is back for its third year to encourage all of us to shop local this Christmas to support the Aiken economy and for a chance to win some cash. To round out this issue, I pulled my vintage Pottery Barn reindeer dishes out early and asked Kate Van Cantfort of Southerlee Farm to use them to style a whimsical holiday table for a photo shoot at Whisper Farm. The dishes are central to my family’s celebration of Christmas and have sentimental value as my mom acquired the collection for me one piece at a time at after-Christmas sales over many years. I hope this holiday season brings you some quality time with the ones you love and a time to reflect on the reason for the season. See you next year!

Making Christmas Magic Is a Year-Round Occupation for the Mills Family 18

It’s time to pack up the fall decor and make room for Christmas! And it starts with the all-important job of choosing the perfect tree to fit snugly in that designated corner of the den or to fill the big window in the living room. There’s something magical about picking out just the right one to bring home, cutting the netting off, letting the limbs fall, wrestling with the tree stand,

and finding just the right position for the Christmas tree to show off the lights and ornaments. This year, let that magic begin at Clarks Hill Christmas Tree Farm. Owned and operated by Charlie Mills and his wife, Nancy, and located in Edgefield County, about 30 minutes from Aiken, this tree farm gives families a fun and festive experience to find a

Christmas tree and make beautiful memories together. The family land, which had once been used for row crops, sat empty after Mills’ father retired, so in 1983, Mills decided to plant Christmas trees, mainly because “the land needed to be doing something… and because we didn’t have a lot of money and Christmas trees don’t take a lot of money to get into”. trees, he sold about 100. The following year, after running a tree giveaway advertising deal held during WBBQ’s “Goldie Oldie Hour,” sales increased 1200% and haven’t slowed down since. Speaking of not slowing down, Mills works every day, year-round, to run this farm with Nancy right by his side, handling office matters. The public sees the hustle and bustle during peak season, with employees and family members helping to move things along smoothly. Still, the off-season is so important to a successful holiday season. And Mills does it almost entirely on his own. While November and December are festive and magical, January through October is much quieter on the farm. The work is behind the scenes, but it's just as busy. Mills begins after the first of the year with clearing out around all of the cut stumps and then moves on to planting, pruning, spraying and mowing. He even cuts and roots the trees himself to replant! It’s a dedication to hard work and making Clarks Hill Christmas Tree Farm a wonderful experience for others that drives him. The sprawling farm of around 40 acres offers seven different types of trees, from pines to cypresses to cedars and even the stunning Carolina Sapphire. With so many varieties and sizes, there is a tree for everyone and every space. Families arrive in the parking lot and are treated to a hay ride out to the trees, where the smell of fresh pine fills the air. After walking along the rows and choosing the tree, employees cut it down and load it up for the ride back. Once back at the farmhouse and office, customers can hang out and enjoy all that the Mills offer their guests. There’s a concession stand with hot chocolate and boiled peanuts, as well as some cornhole games, swings and picnic tables. Fresh greenery is also available: wreaths, garland, kissing balls, centerpieces and mailbox swags. Each one is handmade by Charlie and Nancy Mills-just another testament to their dedication to the business and their customers. Sure, there are trees to grab after grocery shopping or at big box home improvement stores, but the experience people get from Clarks Hill Tree Farm is different. Memories are made, traditions continue, and the magic of Christmas is found there with the Mills. Visit them this season for a wonderful family adventure to start the Christmas excitement. In the heart of our picturesque small town, there resides a Santa Claus whose love for his role transcends the bounds of the North Pole. This jolly and spirited figure brings the magic of Christmas to life for our close-knit Aiken community, and his commitment to his craft is nothing short of heartwarming. Robby Bowles began his journey as Santa Claus rather unknowingly when he agreed to participate in No Shave November. His beard came in completely white, and many of his employees and nursing home residents where he was an Administrator encouraged him to dress up as Santa Claus. Robby agreed good-naturedly and performed for several residents in nursing homes to help spread Christmas cheer. This simple one-time act to brighten the lives of many seniors ignited a passion in Robby, and his transformation into a fulltime Santa Claus began. In 2020, Santa Robby made his official

debut in local Christmas parades. He also started working with the Aiken Downtown Development walking around downtown to visit and take pictures with adults and children. What makes this small-town Santa stand out is the personal touch he adds to every interaction, whether with children or adults. He remembers names and listens attentively to their wishes, but most importantly, he makes each person feel special. When asked what his most memorable Santa experience was, he replied, “Being Santa is a mission for me. Last year, a lot of adults would come up and ask me to pray for them or their spouse or their family. I have had a lot of wonderful experiences with children, but having the opportunity to pray with these adults was incredible and truly touched my heart.” Santa Robby takes his responsibilities to heart. He continues to visit the elderly in the area bringing them comfort, company and a hearty “ho, ho, ho.” His warm presence illuminates Hopelands Gardens even brighter than their Christmas lights display as he listens to every request from his holiday visitors. Santa Robby has taken his role so seriously that he recently attended a Christmas performer workshop in Alabama hosted by a former Marine Corps Sergeant, Santa True, that focused on how to prepare for the role of Santa Claus physically and emotionally. In a world that often seems divided, we can learn from Santa Robby’s mission to inspire that the holiday season should be a time of unity, love and compassion that lasts the whole year through. Santa Robby shows us the beauty of a simpler, more meaningful way of life, where the greatest gift of all is the love we give to one another.

Strolling around downtown Aiken in December feels like nothing short of stepping into a Hallmark Christmas movie. Once the holiday season descends upon our charming little town, the streets come alive with Christmas spirit. With twinkling lights, garland strung about and storefronts adorned with decorations, the entire downtown area essentially turns into a winter wonderland. And if you’re ready to celebrate the season, there are a few traditional Aiken Christmas events that you don’t want to miss.

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING DECEMBER 1ST 6:00 PM-7:30 PM IN AIKEN Christmas always begins the first weekend in December. Each year, the Christmas season officially kicks off with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, hosted by the City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism. This cherished tradition begins with everyone gathering at the town square, a picturesque setting adorned with twinkling lights and holiday decorations. The centerpiece, of course, is the Christmas tree. As the sun sets and the chill in the air grows, anticipation mounts. The crowd can enjoy refreshments while being serenaded by carolers which adds to the warm, inviting atmosphere. Finally, the big moment comes. Everyone begins the countdown, the switch is thrown and the tree bursts to life in a dazzling display of lights. A magical glow is cast over the entire square as the crowd erupts in applause and Christmastime officially begins. This tradition is perfect for adults and kids alike…you may even get a special hello from Santa! The whole evening is a perfect example of the inherent charm of Christmas in Aiken and the kinds of small-town traditions that make spending the holiday here so special. NIGHT OF 1, 0 0 0 L I G H T S DECEMBER 7TH 6:00 PM-8:00 PM Now that you’ve ushered in the Christmas season with the Christmas Tree Lighting, there’s another Aiken staple on the docket. You’ve probably realized by now that Aiken goes big for Christmas and really leans into the entire holiday season. And this event is no exception. Night of 1,000 Lights is an annual tradition presented by the Aiken Downtown Development Association. Every year, tourists and residents gather in downtown Aiken to celebrate the most beautiful night of the holiday season. In keeping with its name, this event is the one night when downtown Aiken is lined with a thousand luminaries as event-goers stroll up and down Laurens Street. When you arrive downtown for Night of 1,000 Lights, you have the chance to enjoy the magical glow that’s cast over the charming streets of our little town. Walking through the downtown area during Night of 1,000 Lights is like stepping right into a scene from one of your favorite Christmas movies. One of the primary draws of Night of 1,000 Lights is the many downtown shops that stay open late for the occasion. For these two hours, the sidewalks are bustling with shoppers searching for the perfect Christmas gift and carolers singing all of the holiday favorites. You may spot some elves and even Santa himself! With evening shopping hours, holiday drinks, treats and music, Night of 1,000 Lights is the perfect, festive evening in Aiken. The event has always been a huge draw — in past years, anywhere from 5,000 to 8,000 people have attended. So come stroll the luminary-lined street, visit our local stores and kick off the holiday shopping season in true Aiken style. Make sure you arrive early if you want to park close.

DOWNTOWN AIKEN CHRISTMAS PARADE

D E C E M B E R 3 R D 2 : 0 0 P M -3 : 0 0 P M Everyone loves a good parade. After all, we kick off the Christmas season nationally with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade where Santa makes his official debut at the very end. And, here in Aiken, there are two festive parades to enjoy. After all, when you take Christmas as seriously as Aiken does, one parade just isn’t enough. The first parade of the season is the Downtown Aiken Christmas Parade which is presented by the Aiken Downtown Development Association. This annual parade is pretty much guaranteed to give you all of the Hallmark Christmas movie vibes. Every year the parade is given a theme, and this year’s is “Your Favorite Christmas Movie.” The Christmas parade begins at the Aiken Visitors Center & Train Museum. From there, it will travel southwest down Park Avenue, turn right onto Laurens Street and continue by traveling northwest to Barnwell Avenue. If you want to check out the Downtown Aiken Christmas Parade, you’ve got plenty of places to choose from. Attendees are allowed to set up on sidewalks anywhere along the parade route. In addition, the outside parking spaces along Laurens Street northbound will be cleared of vehicles so that viewers can also set up there. Just pick your spot and settle in to enjoy a variety of themed floats, vintage cars, music and more.

DOWNTOWN DOG U G LY C H R I S T M A S SWEATER S TROLL D E C E M B E R 9T H 2 02 3 4 : 0 0 P M Don’t leave your furry friend out of the Aiken Christmas merriment! This next event is a newcomer to the Christmas in Aiken scene, but it’s already gaining momentum as the perfect holiday celebration for dog lovers. If you’re not already familiar with them, Downtown Dog is a local pet store located on Laurens Street and is designed for dogs and the people who love them. This beloved shop has cemented itself as a favorite for dog owners in Aiken. Last year they began their first-ever Christmas event: the Downtown Dog Ugly Christmas Sweater Stroll. Starting at 11 am on December 9, Santa will be setting up at the store and offering a photo op benefitting FOTAS. Swing by the store to take a picture with Santa, and then come back later in the afternoon for the stroll- don’t forget to get your dog all dolled up in their favorite ugly Christmas sweater first! Because at 4:00 pm, the Downtown Dog Ugly Christmas Sweater Stroll will begin. The event will include an ugly sweater contest for dogs with a prize for the winner. There will also be plenty of free treats!

HOOFBEAT S & CHRISTMAS CAROLS PARADE DECEMBER 16TH 2:00 PM -4:00 PM

One Christmas parade just isn’t enough when you’re celebrating Christmas in Aiken. Less than two weeks after the Downtown Aiken Christmas Parade, you’ve got the opportunity to attend another quintessentially Aiken tradition. In a town that’s a mecca for equestrians, you know that you’re guaranteed to see horses (and horse statues) pretty much everywhere you go. And Christmas parades are no exception! Presented by the Aiken Equine Rescue and SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare, the 14th annual Hoofbeats & Christmas Carols Parade is a festive event that features hundreds of horses, equestrians, carriages, dogs and Santa’s elves. All of the participants are dressed up in holiday attire, including the animals, as they parade through downtown Aiken singing Christmas carols all the way. The parade is a beloved tradition in Aiken, but it came from humble beginnings. The first Hoofbeats & Christmas Carols Parade took place in 2009 with only 19 horses. The parade has since grown to include almost 300 horses, 12 carriages and 100 dogs. Come watch and sing along as the Hoofbeats & Christmas Carols Parade makes its way through downtown Aiken. The parade will start and finish at the intersection of Barnwell and Greenville Streets. Attendance is free.

But the friends fueled her, stopping by to pick up a paintbrush, bringing homemade ice tea or putting their back into pulling off tacky aluminum siding. Three years of hard labor has revealed a stylish home she now enjoys sharing with others. “Hospitality is in my DNA. After all the hard work, it’s gratifying to share Whisper Farm with others. The dinner parties on the front porch have become legendary.” Yost also offers overnight accommodations in the farmhouse for a few lucky guests traveling with their horses. Guests enjoy perusing Yost’s fascinating collection of rare books and art. Outside, there are scenic walking and riding trails. There are now 80 hydrangeas and 50 encore azaleas overlooking the valley. Spring and summer should be gorgeous! Whisper Farm is Yost’s 20th house. “There’s enough land and projects here to have fun for the rest of my life. Finally, I think I've found my forever home.”

It had been for sale for six years. A calendar on a bedroom wall was from the 1960’s. Wildlife had moved in. Squirrels had filled the kitchen cupboards, so pecans poured down when you opened a door. It was a decaying, moldering time capsule filled with the detritus of the same family since 1790, but old-house renovator Marianne Yost wanted it. “I wasn’t looking, but when I saw it, I knew I was meant to have it.” Set on a hilltop to catch the rare breeze, most of its land had been sold off except for 100 acres with ramshackle buildings covered by a jungle, relics of a long-ago way of life. But the farmhouse walls were still straight, built of indestructible old heart of pine. It had a septic, a well and one functioning electric outlet. Yost bought it, moved in and got to work. She took showers under a hose on the back porch before there was a bathroom. “It was like camping. It was fun and how I bonded with the house.” Her friends thought she was crazy. Maybe.

A Christmas table set with vintage Pottery Barn reindeer dishes holds a special place in my heart, not only for its festive charm but also for the memories it represents. Over the course of 25 years, my mother collected these whimsical pieces, one after-Christmas sale at a time, as a gift to me. Each year, as we unpack these unique dishes while I am humming the “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” song to make sure I get them in order, I am reminded of the joy and dedication my mother put into this collection. The reindeer dishes, each with a distinct design, evoke the magic of Christmas and the warmth of family. Their rich colors and stylish patterns bring a touch of nostalgia to our holiday celebrations. The sense of anticipation builds as we arrange the table, carefully selecting a plate for each guest and enjoying a laugh as we debate who we will seat at Vixen and Blitzen. The holidays are just around the corner, and that means shopping. Everyone is looking for memorable gifts for folks on their nice list, and the Aiken Chamber knows where you can find them….in Aiken. The Chamber’s BUY AIKEN - RED TICKET campaign urges shoppers to spend money in Aiken. And, to make shopping locally even more appealing, shoppers are rewarded with potential cash prizes. You will receive a numbered red ticket when you purchase $25 or more from a participating business. These tickets are entered into weekly drawings that begin at $100 in the first week and increase to three $1,000 awards. In total, $5,000 in cash prizes will be awarded during the campaign from November 1 to December 18. Our sponsor, Bridgestone, has included a complete set of new tires in the grand prize drawing this year. The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds.
