Summer is coming to an end, but watermelon season is still in full swing! Let's make the perfect treat for an end of summer pool party, to cool down and stay hydrated on a hot afternoon, or to enjoy with your kids before the hustle and bustle of the school year. This recipe will make 4 slushies that the whole family can enjoy. It only requires 3 ingredients and is ready in 5 minutes!

INGREDIENTS: • 1 seedless watermelon • The juice of 1 lime • Handful of ice

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cut the rind off the watermelon and cut into inch cubes. Place in a large bowl and freeze for at least 4-5 hours and up to overnight. 2. Place all of the ingredients in a blender and stir and push down the watermelon chunks as needed until fully combined and almost creamy. 3. Serve in bowls or cups with a spoon and lime wedge. 4. Enjoy!

Patrick Boylan is a local land surveyor that stepped out on his own January of 2021 and hasn’t looked back. He has grown a flourishing business in Aiken and reflects on his fondness for the city since moving here in 2014. “Aiken is such a wonderful place to live. It’s a great small-town that has so many things to offer. It’s been a place that’s extremely easy to call home.”

We asked him to share some lessons he’s learned through this endeavor and he gave some insightful advice about the importance of rest as a small business owner. “I was warned that when you work for yourself, you become your worst boss.” While it can be tempting to work all hours of the day and night for your business, Boylan has learned that the healthiest thing for you and your business is to maintain a balance with work and personal life and to manage your time wisely. Patrick’s passion for what he does is visible through everything that he says and does. He remarks that one of his favorite things about his business is getting to spend so much time outdoors in beautiful Aiken, South Carolina. He is excited to continue to grow his business and challenge himself with bigger and bigger projects.

What's the most essential school supply of all? "A library card," says the American Library Association (ALA). The observation began in 1987 when U.S. Secretary of Education William J. Bennett urged a national campaign for all kids to obtain and use a library card. Today's libraries offer a broad array of free materials, services, and activities for kids and adults alike. Here are just a few great reasons to make the library an integral part of your and your child’s life. MOVIES & FILMS – Today’s libraries offer a great selection of mainstream movies and television series as well as educational, independent, and foreign films on DVD for kids and adults alike. MUSIC CDS – Music is the universal language. You'll find a large selection of pop, rock, and country music CDs at the library. You can even introduce your kids to classical, jazz, blues, international music, and more. COMPUTER SOFTWARE & GAMES – If your kids are into video games, the library has an array of children’s educational software and video games. You can also find teen and adult video games, instructional and reference software, and productivity software ranging from Microsoft programs to graphic design. PERIODICALS – Newspapers, magazines, and niche periodicals are available for both in-library use and check out. BOOKS, AUDIOBOOKS, AND EBOOKS – In addition to vast collections of print fiction, non-fiction, and reference

Take a two-hour guided kayak tour and visit Seal Rock for more sealife observation. Throughout your stay, you of course will want to make your way into town for endless entertainment options of “Laguna flavor.” Visit the community theater, The Laguna Playhouse, where Harrison Ford got his start. Hop on a free trolley and pop from brewpub Laguna Beach Beer Company pouring locally made craft beer, to one of two wine-tasting rooms where McClain Cellars serves award-winning wines from Santa Ynez Valley. If craft beer is your jam, LBBC names each creation after different places around the community, even dubbing one “The Greeter” after an infamous tourist who never left the area, greeting all who entered this inviting and charming town. If wine is more your style, McClain Cellars only offers their wine locally in Laguna Beach, outside of their Santa Barbara area vineyard. The “you can only find it here” sentiment is a special aspect of Laguna Beach and supports why people return repeatedly and begin to call this place their home away from home. Complement your thirst with a variety of cuisines among more than 100 restaurants to choose from. Local favorites include The Royal Hawaiian Fire Grill for a twist on Hawaiian flavors in a tiki-style venue, Las Brisas for its incredible brunch menu and scenic views of Laguna’s Heisler Park overlooking cliffs that resemble the French Riviera, Broadway by Amar Santana for some of the most elevated cuisine you will find from a multi-Top Chef finalist, along with cocktails crafted seasonally by the restaurant’s mixologist. DIY VANILL A OR ANGE SUGAR SCRUB CREATE YOUR OWN DIY SUGAR SCRUB

To make one 8 ounce mason jar of vanilla orange sugar scrub, you need: + 1/4 cup of coconut oil + 3/4 cup of sugar + 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract + 10 drops of orange essential oil

DIRECTIONS Soften the coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds. Next add the vanilla extract and the orange essential oil. Then, stir in the sugar, a little at a time. Print off a fun label or attach a ribbon to the jar, and your sugar scrub is ready.
