LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year, Aiken!

CITY LIFESTYLE

AIKEN

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Jacqueline Bailey | jacqueline.bailey@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Bailey Morris | bailey.morris@citylifestyle.com

It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. We talked to Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa about the amazing benefits of Himalayan salt. Their Himalayan salt cave is relaxing, great for mental health, and helps with allergies, skin conditions such as acne, and much more! Silver Bluff Grove is an assisted living facility that helps their residents thrive. Hear more about what they have to offer for the seniors in our community on page 24. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

Experience the amazing benefits of Himalayan salt

Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa

When you first step inside the Himalayan salt cave, you feel a wave of calmness come over you and all of your worries instantly wash away. The salty air and twinkling lights make for an unforgettable experience. Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa is easily the most relaxing place to be. “It’s great for mental health, depression, anxiety, stress relief, and PTSD,” says Michelle Grant. “Everybody is stressed these days and it’s amazing how tranquil the cave is. You decompress there and forget where you are.” Owners Michelle Grant and Dan Finn first visited a salt cave while traveling with friends in 2018. They fell in love with the cave and the many benefits it offers. At the time, Michelle was suffering from extreme allergies and realized while relaxing in the salt cave that she could breathe normally again. “We actually opened our doors two years to the day after we visited the salt cave in Asheville. I’ve never felt better in my life. I had suffered from allergies for thirty-five years. I’ve had two sinus surgeries and after a few months, I was right back to where I was before,” says Michelle. Now, Michelle no longer suffers from allergies and has been medication free since January 2021. CONTINUED >

Relaxing in the salt cave can bring many benefits. It helps with respiratory issues such as allergies, sinusitis, ear, sinus, and upper respiratory infections, cystic fibrosis, bronchitis, asthma, COPD, emphysema, pneumonia, and snoring. It also helps with skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, rashes, water retention, swelling and inflammation, and dry, itchy skin. The salt cave can even bring you a sense of wellbeing by helping alleviate stress, PTSD, anxiety, and depression. “The salt cave is a 430 square foot man-made cave. There are stalactites hanging from the ceiling, four inches of salt on the floor, and the walls are made of chunks of Himalayan salt,” says Dan. “A machine called a halogenerator crushes up pharmaceutical grade salt and then blows it into the room so while you are sitting there relaxing, you’re inhaling the salty air. It gets into your lungs and opens up the respiratory system.” Michelle tells us that the salt is antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal. “This is one of the most sterile places you can be in right now,” says Michelle. Salt therapy is new to the U.S., but is popular in other countries since being discovered in the mid 1800’s. It evolved from the salt mines in Europe and Russia when Dr. Boczkoawski noticed that the salt mine workers rarely suffered from

20

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

respiratory issues. It was known as Speleotherapy, a respiratory therapy which involves the breathing of salt infused air in a microclimate of a salt mine. “It is respiratory hygiene - keeping the airways open, breaking up congestion, and building your immune system,” says Michelle. Also offered at Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa is the Private Zen Room, a salt cave for kids, Full Spectrum Sauna, yoga classes in the cave, and the Amethyst BioMat. A massage therapist, who is also a licensed esthetician, works on site and offers a variety of services as well. “The Amethyst BioMat has ribs of amethyst going across internally, but it’s giving off far infrared rays along with negative ion therapy. Your cell phone, microwave, and TV, that’s giving off the positive ions that’s bad for your body. It has the super conductive heat from the amethyst and the tourmaline. It’s amazing how it just takes all the pain out of your body,” says Michelle. Visit Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa to start off your new year right. Find them at 7013 Evans Town Center Blvd # 201, Evans, GA 30809. To reserve a session in the salt cave, visit their website at www.solcaveandspa.com or call 706-364-7958.

SILVER BLUFF GROVE Learn how this assisted living facility helps their residents thrive

ARTICLE BY BAILEY MORRIS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

As an assisted living and memory care community, Silver Bluff Grove’s mission centers around home and comfort. “As soon as you pull in, you see the front porch with the rocking chairs. A lot of the time, it reminds people about coming to their grandparents’ homes, sitting on the porch with their family. When you walk in, you see our fireplace in our living room,” says Laura Argo, the Community Resource Director at Silver Bluff Grove. “When your loved ones are getting to an age where they’re needing assistance for things, instead of the family trying to pile everything on themselves and all the tasks, we have a person here designated for everything,” says Laura. Laura handles community relations, sales and marketing, and is usually the first point of contact for families inquiring about Silver Bluff Grove. Laura grew up in Aiken and loves connecting with the residents at Silver Bluff Grove. “I came from corporate sales so coming to Silver Bluff Grove has really made me appreciate community service,” says Laura. Silver Bluff Grove has been in Aiken for over twenty-five years. Available to the residents are an in-house nurse, transportation to appointments, all dietary services, and on-site therapy with Fox Rehabilitation Services. They also offer laundry services, day-to-day change of programming, religious services, activities based on CONTINUED >

preference and hobbies, a beauty salon, and resident council. “We create experiences day-to-day to make it seem like home. Even the meals we cook here are very focused on comfort. When someone is leaving their home to go somewhere else, it’s really important to make sure that they are still comforted,” says Laura. Silver Bluff Grove offers both private and companion living spaces for their residents. “We have a more secure, intimate Memory Care building for our residents who have advanced a little more,” says Laura. The companion studios work well for those in Memory Care because as a person advances more, it’s soothing for them to be with someone. “A lot of the time, the people who are coming here, haven’t lived alone yet,” says Laura. “Although we are not the biggest in the community, I feel like our care is unmatched. even knows if it’s just time for a new manicure,” says Laura. “I feel like it shines and reflects off of us onto the families that are here too. People may come in to check on a loved one, but they are also going to go down the hall and check on someone else too because they’ve grown to know them,” says Laura. “When people get older, others tend to forget that there’s still life to be lived. We want to make sure that they’re thriving because they are still alive. I want people to know that this is not a nursing home.

The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 30

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. “It’s an interesting moment in time. There’s this heightened sense of, ‘how do I become more resilient, how do I boost my immune system?’ Health and wellness is way more in the spotlight, and the trend of more people being at home has launched a new consumer process,” they say. It doesn’t hurt that they are designed with your home in mind. The elegant and unique physique makes it an easy decision for everyone to appreciate. “The design passed the wife test—everyone was happy to have it! We appreciate aesthetics and design, that’s been a key piece. It fits with a beautiful home and we are proud of that.” CONTINUED >

“What’s also exciting about this is that we have partnered with American Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman, who has a very specific protocol: Get in for sixty seconds, get out for sixty, do three to five rotations and get to the point of a shiver.”

Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. Ryan also compares it to working out, citing weightlifting as an example. “The whole thing is tearing your muscles down so they become stronger. You are going through an intentional stressor. You will get a relaxed response after, but you are intentionally putting yourself into a fight or flight state. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan has his own process—getting in, breathing four seconds in and four seconds out, transitioning his hands in and out of the water because their different nerve endings create a different blood flow and kick off the fight or flight mechanism. His nervous system then calms down and his mind sets into calmness roughly two and a half minutes in. After a three minute plunge, he comes out super energized with mental clarity. “It feels like a back door to meditation for people who don’t meditate, i.e. two to three

32

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

minutes vs twenty,” he says. “It’s a totally different process, but you push out the mental chatter and you become more present.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. “A lot of people who come for our product just want to do hard things, uncomfortable things. They say, if it’s good for me AND it’s difficult, then they are completely motivated by that.” The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. “One of the things that has been rad that we did not anticipate is parents doing it with their children,” he says. “It’s become this ritual where they do it together, a family plunge.” CrossFit frontman Rich Froning told the team that the coolest thing about having The Plunge is doing the plunge together every night with his daughter. It’s another layered benefit for their clients to know, one of creating special time around doing something uncomfortable and getting healthier, together. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
