Clothes are more than just how we cover our bodies. They are how we express our emotions, our passions, our desires, ourselves. The stories told through fashion allow us to speak without saying a word.

An unexpected fabric brings a fresh twist to a classic suit. An unforgettable accessory becomes a signature piece. An unconventional polish begets a legendary icon.

As the saying goes, fashion is fleeting but style is eternal.

Best Face Forward

EXPERT TIPS ON HOW TO PUT YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD THIS FALL

Fall is here, which means it’s time for cooler weather and a chance to don our favorite styles. Whether you’re wearing the latest trends or old favorites, the best way to accessorize is a fresh face with healthy and radiant skin. To help you prep your skin to look its best for fall and beyond, Kristine M. Reynolds, RN, BSN, owner and advanced aesthetic injector at K Medspa ( KMedspa.com), shares her expertise with must-know tips for healthy skin. As a nurse injector and owner of a local med spa, Reynolds uses her passion for both aesthetics and patient education to achieve the best results. “Improved skin hydration and regular upkeep helps slows down the aging process. If you choose to get professional services done, make sure the expert places an emphasis on looking as natural as possible,” she advises. “The better your skin’s condition, the more confident you’ll feel. The more confident you are, the better you look – no matter what you’re wearing.”

HYDRATE AND STAY MOISTURIZED

Drinking water regularly helps to not only keep your skin hydrated but also improves your overall health. Staying properly hydrated boosts your skin’s elasticity, helps to prevent wrinkles, and many other benefits. (How much should you drink? While advice varies, be sure to consult your personal healthcare professional.) In addition to proper water intake, using a quality daily moisturizer based on your skin’s needs is key for overall skin health.

USE SPF-BASED SUNSCREEN YEAR-ROUND BOOK SKINCARE TREATMENTS WITH THE PROS

Separate from your moisturizer, Reynolds advises that locals use SPF-based sunscreen all year. “Oftentimes, a good moisturizer and an SPF-based sunscreen are separate,” she says. “I recommend a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50.” How do you know specific products that are meant for your unique skin? Reynolds suggests consulting a skincare professional who can give you advice tailored to your specific skincare needs.

Holiday festivities are just around the corner, and you want your skin to be in tip-top shape. Reynolds recommends booking exfoliation and illuminating treatments at a local, professional med spa to give your skin a fresh glow for fall and beyond. “Exfoliation treatments clear away dead skin cells and built-up dirt, and illuminating treatments help to brighten skin and smooth out pigmentated skin,” she explains.

The Eyes FEAST FOR

Dinner service is being elevated into an art form at restaurants across the Valley, transforming simple nights out into edible adventures through the use of colorful ingredients and clever plating.

One of the best means to make a visual impression is through the use of seafood. For example, Roka Akor ( RokaAkor.com) has a head-turning Chef's Sashimi Selection ($38 and up) featuring a mountain of vibrantly colored fresh fish arranged atop crushed ice with floral garnish so it appears like a coral reef.

Taking a creative approach to pasta has similarly impressive results. At Lure Fish House ( LureFishHouse.com), the Lobster Ravioli ($22) is made using squid ink to give the noodle black stripes before it is stuffed with gratuitous chunks of shellfish and topped with chardonnay cream sauce, additional lobster, and aged parmesan. And at Fat Ox ( ILoveFatOx.com), the Rosso Creste Di Gallo ($18) infuses red wine into the pasta-making process, resulting in pink noodles that perfectly complement the accompanying dandelion greens, duck sausage, mushroom, and huckleberries.

Smart chefs also have seasonal produce and house-made sauces in their arsenal.

When it comes to produce, the Avocado Aguachile ($16) at Tia Carmen ( TiaCarmenDesertRidge.com) is a gorgeous celebration of green thanks to the use of Persian cucumbers and serrano chilies; the Shrimp & Crab Ceviche ($19) at The VIG ( TheVig.us) benefits as much from the expertly sliced cucumber, red onion, radish, avocado, and pomegranate as it does from the luscious blue crab on the plate; and Cooper’s Hawk (CHWinery.com) can barely keep the Shrimp & Scallop Risotto ($28.99) in stock thanks to the beautiful contrasts in texture and color that the asparagus, sweet corn, peas, and spinach give to the dish.

As for sauces, the Brussels Sprout Nachos at Diego Pops ( DiegoPops.com) are tough to beat. Certainly, the use of Brussels sprouts, street corn queso, and pickled onions make an impression, but the hot pink crema on top – made using beets and roasted garlic – always steals the show.

Another big scene stealer? Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion ( WrigleyMansion.com), among the most ambitious eateries when it comes to whimsical plating, especially during chef Christopher Gross’ signature tasting menu ($275 per person). Though every course is wild, the Egg in and Egg in an Egg is especially impressive. The dish comes under a large ceramic egg-shaped cloche and is revealed tableside to be a hollow eggshell filled with creamy scrambled eggs and Osetra caviar, topped with edible flecks of gold.  Similarly stunning are the Buttermilk Buns ($9) at Mowry & Cotton (mowryandcotton.com), which come piping hot on a massive custom butcher block with a bevy of pink and green pickled vegetables as well as an angular slathering of seasonal jam, duck fat, and fig butter topped with lavender-pickled blueberries and dried corn; and the Jidori Chicken Wing ($6) at The Mission ( TheMissionAZ.com), a singular wing that stands straight up accompanied by a garden of edible flowers and fermented hot sauce in fanciful shapes.

Of course, dessert also lends itself to statement plating. Prime, A Shula's Steak House ( PlayAtGila.com ) blows the doors off during dessert with its Baked Alaska ($11). The white and red-spiked Italian meringue masterpiece paired with key lime gelato, shortbread, and raspberry compote is next-level striking. Not to be outdone Kai Restaurant ( KaiRestaurant.com ). Each of the dishes on its tasting menu ($185 per person) is a piece of edible art, but especially I'itoi's Garden, a sweet menagerie of hibiscus and lavender pavlova, lemon curd, color-changing butterfly pea powers, orange-kissed ganache, and crème anglaise.

Insider advice on preparing for your next family photo shoot

Capturing precious family moments through professional photo shoots has become a beloved tradition for countless families. Whether you’re planning for a special occasion or simply want to capture the essence of your family’s bond, these photo shoots provide the perfect opportunity to freeze time and have stunning photos to cherish for years to come. Qiana Kelsch of Qiana K. Photography (on Instagram at @QianaKPhotography) shares the importance of capturing images with your loved ones:

“To me, family photos are something that is needed to preserve the memories,” she says. “I know people say that all the time, but for me, it really is just that. You take photos to remember the moment, an age, a location or how someone looked.”

Here, Kelsch shares tips and tricks for a successful family photosoot.

Coordinating Your Crew

When it comes to styling your family for the photo shoot, coordination is key. Instead of going for identical outfits, opt for a cohesive color palette or theme. This allows each family member to express their individual style while maintaining a harmonious overall look. Consider choosing complementary colors or selecting a central color and building the outfits around it. Kelsch says it’s best to avoid graphic tees or patterns that can draw attention, and to keep jewelry and accessories to a minimum. Her best tip for styling a photoshoot is for everyone to feel comfortable in their clothes so they can focus on being present with their loved ones and enjoy the experience.

Essentials for a Smooth Photo Shoot

To ensure a successful experience, make a checklist of essential items to bring along. These may include touch-up makeup and grooming products, hairbrushes, spare clothes in case of accidents, wipes and any props or sentimental items that hold significance for your family. “Water is always good to have,” says Kelsch. “And bring snacks for kids, but be sure they won’t stain or leave anything behind.” Be sure to bring treats and water for pets, too.

HOW TO | LIFE + CULTURE
26

Timing the Magic

Family photos should be done yearly, especially with growing children, says Kelsch. “They grow so fast and change so much in a short time – you don’t want to forget that.” Another good time to schedule a photoshoot is when extended family are in town or if you’re traveling to a special destination. And with the holidays approaching it’s important to start thinking of photos for holiday cards. Kelsch says these photos should be taken any time from September through November.

Honoring the Village Setting the Stage

Family is not limited to blood relations alone; think about including grandparents, aunts, uncles, or close friends who play a significant role in your family’s life. Incorporating multiple generations, and even furry family members, can add depth and meaning to the photos, showcasing the love and connections that span time and species. “The most important thing about taking photos is to take them and to be in them. You want to have something to remember and look back on later,” Kelsch says.

The choice between an indoor or outdoor location depends on your preferences and the overall vision for your family photo shoot. Outdoor shoots offer a wide range of scenic backdrops, such as parks, gardens or urban landscapes. “I personally love a good urban or downtown location. A city skyline can be just as beautiful with the tall buildings and concrete.” Indoor shoots offer controlled environments and can be more suitable for specific themes or creative concepts. Studios, historic buildings or even your own home can serve as excellent indoor locations.

Sophisticated Ranch Retreat

ENJOY A STYLISH ALLINCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE AT TANQUE VERDE RANCH

Nestled among the Rincon Mountains in Tucson, Ariz., lies “the last luxurious outpost of the Old West” – Tanque Verde Ranch, an old-time cattle and guest ranch.

Gordon Montgomery and Kelley Lamm recently experienced Tanque Verde Ranch for the first time. “Our time spent at this remarkable destination exceeded all expectations and left an indelible mark on our memories,” affirms Lamm.

The ranch consists of more than 60,000 acres of desert, deep-rooted in American history, that passed hands through various ranchers and cattlemen since 1868, until Jim Converse built lodging accommodations and began to welcome guests to the property in 1928.

"Tanque Verde Ranch is not only a dude-ranch vacation destination but also a long-living story with an abundance of truthful tales waiting to unfold and for someone to blow the dust off,” says General Manager Terry Hanley. “The Arizona desert 15 decades ago was filled with greedy gangsters and deadly trails. Tanque Verde Ranch lived through it, and did some building along the way."

Now owned by Cote Family Destinations, guests of Tanque Verde Ranch can experience the ranch's rich 150-plus-year American history—an authentic Wild West experience— including more than 200 horses for lessons and rides on miles of horse trails, wound through desert and mountain scenery. “We had the privilege of exploring the breathtaking trails of Tucson alongside the legendary ranch wrangler, Joe Valdez,” Lamm says. “His expertise and passion for the land made every step of the journey an exhilarating experience. From the rugged terrain to

the awe-inspiring vistas, we discovered the true essence of the Southwest.”

Lamm shares that Tanque Verde Ranch is an awesome experience for all of the senses—not only for its spectacular sights but unique and delectable tastes. She adds that a highlight of the stay was the unforgettable cookout at Cottonwood Grove.

"The rustic setting, combined with the flavors of a well-prepared meal, created a culinary experience that delighted our taste buds and warmed our hearts,” she said. “The attention to detail and the quality of the ingredients truly showcased the ranch's commitment to excellence.

“The following morning, we embarked on a sensational ride to a blueberry pancake breakfast, which left us in awe of the breathtaking surroundings, while savoring the delicious pancakes was a feast for the senses. The dedication of the staff to provide such an unforgettable start to the day was evident in every bite.”

Guests also can enjoy more than 30 fun activities, including mountain biking, fishing, hiking, axe throwing, archery, swimming, nature seminars and Jeep adventures. The ranch also offers more than 25 team-building activities and 17 event spaces.

Tennis and basketball courts sit among the towering saguaro and ocotillo as well as two swimming pools and 69 choices of comfortable and inviting accommodations featuring traditional adobe walls and Santa Fe-style architecture. And Western wear isn’t just in vogue for cowboys and cowgirls. The accommodations are stylishly appointed in Western wear of their own, featuring textiles, art and more that combine the spirit of the Old West and modern amenities.

Lamm says Tanque Verde Ranch uniquely allows for the simultaneous experience of an old-time ranching adventure and a sophisticated poolside gathering. “The fusion of the cowboy and cowgirl lifestyle seamlessly transitions into a relaxing afternoon by the pool,” she explains.

“This unique blend of adventure and relaxation allows guests to immerse themselves in the true spirit of the ranch. Whether you prefer saddling up for a ride or lounging poolside, there is something for everyone.”

Tanque Verde Ranch’s professional wedding planning staff can assist couples with all of the details for a dream Western wedding with a picture-perfect scenic backdrop of rolling mountains and gorgeous desert landscape and a variety of indoor and outdoor venues to accommodate up to 350 guests.

Numerous spa services at the ranch include massages, body treatments and facials. And off-site activities include skiing, golfing, cave exploring and mountain climbing, among others.

Tanque Verde Ranch has received some 15-plus awards including being named the “No. 1 Top Resort in the Southwest” in Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards in 2021.

Lamm and Montgomery couldn’t agree more. “[Tanque Verde Ranch] is an idyllic destination suitable for families, solo travelers and couples alike. The diverse array of activities, coupled with the outstanding food and impeccable service, make it a true gem among travel destinations,” Lamm says. TanqueVerdeRanch.com | 800.234.3833

THE little BLACK DRESS

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straight-lined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.

“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.

Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.

If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”
