Inspired to Explore There are so many reasons I love to travel. It gives us the chance to discover new destinations, try new foods, meet new people and grow our perspectives. I was bit by the travel bug at a young age, hearing stories from my Aunt Joan and Uncle Jack, who traveled the globe while my uncle served in the military. Both their home and her jewelry box were filled with incredible keepsakes from their experiences. I knew I wanted my own collection of global goods. When I was 16, I said goodbye to my parents and, along with dozens of high school musicians from across the state, took off for a whirlwind European summer adventure with Arizona Ambassadors of Music. I came home with memories and treasures from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and France, but my favorite item was a pair of cerulean Doc Martens blind embossed with flowers that I picked up in London. They’re still kicking around, hidden somewhere in the back of my closet. Adventure and unique treasures don't just have to be in the form of global travel. We can be tourists in our town. In this issue, we share where to take your tastebuds for an epicurean adventure, the best farmers market that will take you across the Valley, and some great tips for making traveling easier than ever. Traveling is a great opportunity to build stronger relationships with those around you. We hope this issue encourages you to take time out with your friends and family to make the plans and take the trips that leave you with the most meaningful memories.

AN INVITATION TO
Innsbruck A family vacation to the Veneto region of northern Italy to spend time visiting friends, family and cities like Verona and Venice, turned into a mini European adventure when we decided to head even further north for a few days. A five-hour train ride transported us from one country to another. The train began meandering its way through scenic northern Italy, hugging the Dolomites. Soon, the architectural representation of cultural influences changed the landscape as we inched closer to the border, from picturesque villas to distinctly Austrian homes bedecked with colorful flowers. Shortly we found ourselves in the alpine city of Innsbruck, Austria. As with so many European cities, Innsbruck is supremely walkable. After walking from the train station to our hotel, we made our way to old town, Altstadt von Innsbruck. Down the block from the hotel and located at the south end of the main thoroughfare that takes you to Altstadt is Triumphpforte, a triumphant arch built in 1765 by Empress Maria Theresa on her namesake street Maria-Theresien-Strasse. The street features a mix of contemporary shops and restaurants set in CONTINUED >

The Giant at Swarovski Kristallwelten
and alongside historic, centuries-old buildings. Maria-Theresien-Strasse turns into the HerzogFriedrich-Strasse where you’ll find the Rococo masterpiece Helbinghaus, and the impressive Goldenes Dachl, the Golden Roof. Arguably the city’s most iconic landmark, the Golden Roof was built between 1497 and 1500 by Emperor Maximilian I. On our way to see the Golden Roof we wandered down tiny streets dotted with restaurants and shops. We tucked into Caroline’s Spiel-Art, a toy shop filled with handmade wooden toys, chess sets, dolls, medieval costumes and more. We even found ourselves in front of a delightful pretzel shop that offered a variety of soft and crispy pretzels of all shapes and sizes for sale. On our second day, we traveled up the cable car to the top of the Nordkette, the mountains surrounding the city, where we played in some patches of snow, breathed in the cold air and were treated to awe-inspiring 360-degree views. It is easy to sing all the songs in “The Sound Of Music” on the way to the top (although, the movie was filmed in Salzburg, Austria, which is about two hours away by train). Afterwards, we walked along Innsbruck’s namesake river, the Inn, with its glacial blue-green water. The beautiful hue is thanks not only to melting glaciers, but also due to the water being naturally filtered as it moves from mountains to the valley. The 322-mile-long river, which runs through Switzerland, Germany and Austria, is a tributary of the Danube, the second-largest river in Europe. The river led us to the 600-year-old Hofgarten, a gorgeously plush 25-acre park with a medieval-themed playground for children. We explored the park until sunset and headed back to our hotel for the evening. The third day, we hopped on a dedicated shuttle that took us 25 minutes away to Wattens, Austria, home of Swarovski Crystals and the Swarovski Kristallwelten – Crystal Worlds. Crystal Worlds is a magical playland for both children and adults, with art exhibits made of crystals and outdoor activities for young and old. The entrance to the main attraction – the Chambers of Wonder – is hidden behind a behemoth known as the Giant, who boasts a waterfall for a mouth. Each of the 18 chambers houses an exhibit by nationally and internationally recognized artists.

A pretzel shop in old town Innsbruck
One chamber held a collection of costumes worn by global superstars – think Elton John’s original Rocket Man jacket and the original slipper from the live-action film “Cinderella.” Another was created to house a magnificent and sparkling crystal tree created by Tord Boontje and Alexander McQueen. Back outside, we discovered more art exhibits, a four-story indoor playtower, an outdoor playground, a maze, a carousel and so much more. It was an easy way to spend an afternoon. Throughout our stay, we ate our way across town and never skimped on traditional foods, tasting everything from Wiener schnitzel to spätzle. One of our favorite restaurants was Stiftskeller, just a few minutes walk from Goldenes Dachl. There was no host to seat us and we discovered we simply needed to sit down at an open, often communal, table and a server would greet us. Our son loves dessert – what kid doesn’t? – but his preference was decidedly not authentically Austrian. His favorite spot was Tomaselli Gelateria on MariaTheresien-Strasse. He insists it is better than any gelato he had in Italy, and he is nearing veritable gelato connoisseur status. Our three-day escapade brought to life so many of the sights, sounds and tastes the Capital of the Alps has to offer.
Other must-see attractions • Tour the Markthalle to sample local farm fresh foods. • Visit the animals at Alpenzoo on the way up to Nordkette. • Check out the Bergiselschanze ski jump made famous at the 1976 Winter Olympic games. • Take in the Baroque styling of Innsbruck Cathedral, also known as Dom zu St. Jakom, and Hofkirche, a church featuring Gothic architecture.

LANTING | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELISEO RANGEL As the weather starts to warm up and the school year winds down, most of us start thinking about our summer travel plans. Ahwatukee based Eliseo “El” Rangel, Luxury Travel Advisor and European Destination Specialist with Pickles Vacations, answered our questions about all things travel.
What are some of the most popular travel destinations right now? All-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico are popular any time of the year. People love to just show up and have their whole vacation planned out for them. Hawaii is also popular. People still enjoy Paris, Rome, and Florence. You’ll encounter crowds in those places, but their cultural and historical attractions can’t be beat. Paris especially has a lot of art and culture away from the typical tourist sites. And French cuisine is amazing!
Eliseo Rangel Tips for Packing Like a Pro
1 | Avoid overpacking When you pack, lay everything out that you think you need, then reduce it by 10-20 percent. You need less than you think. Some people can go weeks with just a backpack of clothes, so think about what you can re-wear and repurpose. But don’t skimp on underwear and socks!
2 | Compress for success
Has travel changed much since the pandemic?
Use packing cubes! They’re inexpensive and help contain and compress your clothing.
Now that things are opened up, most travel destinations are as busy as ever. The major travel industry to take a hit is the cruise industry. Although people are getting more comfortable with crowded cruise ships, that industry is still recovering.

What’s your best advice for long, overseas flights? Bring noise cancelling headphones. These will help you hear yourself think over a noisy airplane. They also give you the ability to watch the in-flight movie, listen to music, or even help you sleep. Have a good, supportive neck pillow that fits in your carry-on. Also, bring a personal charger! You don’t want to have to deal with a dead phone when you’re out and about at your destination.
What is your most useful travel tip, whatever the destination? Be flexible! I have had clients who were prepared and things still happened outside of their control that caused them to miss flights or connections. Roll with the punches. If you’re going overseas, travel insurance is essential. That will help offset any costs from missed tours or opportunities, which can almost always be rescheduled. Consider not checking any luggage, but if you have to, anything that can be easily replaced goes in your checked luggage. You can usually buy clothes or toiletries at your destination if your luggage is lost.

Taste th e World Globally inspired menus available across the Valley

Some of Arizona’s most talented artists don’t use brushes or paint. Dishes are their canvases, and menus are their art. Of course, we are talking about chefs, many of whom draw upon global inspiration from their childhoods, cooking careers, and particular ingredients when working on their culinary masterpieces. Thanks to them, the Valley has evolved from a mecca for national chain and franchise restaurants into a melting pot of diverse flavors and ingredients around every turn. Certainly, authentic Mexican food tops the list of global cuisines most readily available here, with icons like James Beard-nominated Silvana Salcido Esparza and her Barrio Café as well as The Original Carolina’s Mexican Food and Los Reyes de la Torta leading the way. New kids on the butcher block including Rene Andrade and Roberto Centeno, who have created a love letter to food from across the Sonoran Desert with their James Beard-nominated Bacanora, also come to mind. Outside of desert-inspired dishes, Phoenix is also a celebration of epicurean adventures from around the world. Here are some worth a taste.
