LIFESTYLE LETTER

With A Grateful Heart… Welcome to the season of giving and to our annual Thankful issue! Our lives often move at a relentless pace, and November offers a gentle reminder to pause and take stock of the blessings that enrich our lives in both grand and subtle ways. Gratefulness has a profound impact on well-being, our relationships and even our daily experiences. Taking a personal moment to reflect, I’m deeply thankful for the health and well-being of my friends and family. Sharing in their lives, watching them bloom, being a part of all the moments that matter, they’re reminders of just how lucky we are to have each other. Here at Ahwatukee City Lifestyle, we are celebrating our second anniversary. We are grateful for the residents and businesses in our community who help make Ahwatukee the vibrant community that it is. Similarly, we are thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. We are thankful for these past two years and the opportunity to bring to you inspiring stories and the good news of our beloved community. And speaking of inspiring stories, this issue is filled with ways to show thanks for the people in our lives. You’ll find ideas for the perfect hostess gift, how to welcome guests with a warm and inviting guest room, ways to strike up a conversation with our veteran community, and much more. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, I hope you take some time to consider what makes life truly meaningful. With warmth and gratitude.

How to create a cozy retreat for holiday guests ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE SLEZAK

The holiday season is upon us and for many Valley residents, that means visitors are headed to our homes. As we get closer to a time filled with family and friends, homeowners will be looking to find the best ways to make their overnight guests feel welcome and comfortable. If you aren’t sure where to start or what to look for when it comes to making guests feel like they are stepping into a little piece of luxury, here are some great options for any guest bedroom spruce-up.

NEUTRAL COLOR PALETTE First things first, make sure the room is open and bright. Using neutral colors in bedding, walls, and window coverings is the first way to help your guests feel welcome. Think soft white comforters, blended with grey throw blankets, and lots of pillows for the bed.

GREENERY AND FLORALS While you should keep things simple, try not to be too simple and stark where the room just becomes a bed with four white walls. Add vibrancy to the space by incorporating a touch of greenery and beautiful flowers.

THOUGHTFUL AMENITIES When creating your guests’ oasis, make sure they have all the luxuries that hotels offer. Post the Wi-Fi name and password on a cute display and set up a multi-plug charging station for all their electronics. Equipping the nightstand with a humidifier or infuser, along with a white noise machine, helps create a sense of calm and can ensure the most restful night’s sleep. To further help make your guests feel like they are getting a luxury experience

right in your own home, be sure to add creature comforts: stock the closet with things like a cozy robe, slippers, extra pillows, and blankets.

PERSONALIZED TOUCHES Be sure to check with your guests ahead of time to see what sort of late-night snacks they might want to indulge in and leave a basket with some of their favorite options on a side table or dresser. If your guests like to read, consider including some of the latest magazine issues. Provide a variety of options based on your guests’ tastes. Perhaps include the latest offering from their favorite author or a book that you enjoyed. No matter how you decide to style your guest room, be sure your space offers your loved ones a luxurious and memorable experience.

Just For Kids FUN CRAFTS ARE THE FOCUS OF A F E S T I V E T H A N K S G I V I N G TA B L E

As a busy mom of three kids ages 9, 11, and 14, Jenni Thye knows firsthand how important it is to keep the youngest guests at Thanksgiving happy and occupied. “Truth be told, I think a kids’ table is a must now that my kids are even older,” says Thye, who is also owner of Imoni Events (on Instagram @ImoniEvents). “It gives them a chance to be around people their own age. They do not have to participate in adult discussions. And they certainly do not have to sit for a long, drawn-out dinner. When they are at their own table, they can go at their own pace and do the things they want to do.” To make a Thanksgiving kids’ table extra enjoyable, Thye suggests having the supplies for a couple of craft projects ready. Favorites in the Thye home, she says, are turkeys made with Oreos and candies, and providing kids with Polaroid cameras, which they can use to take photos for centerpieces. An adult can show the kids how to make the Oreo turkeys before turning them loose with the ingredients. “And putting the kids in charge of taking pictures is a great way to have them take part in the fun and capture the memories of the day,” Thye says. To add one or both crafts to your kids’ Thanksgiving table this month, you’ll need the following supplies:

OREO TURKEYS • • • • • • •

Double Stuf Oreos Thin pretzel sticks Candy Corn Mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Malted Milk Balls Frosting (for “glue”) Candy Eyes

TO ASSEMBLE TURKEYS: Gently push five pieces of candy corn into the filling at the top of an Oreo to make feathers. For the turkey’s chest, use frosting to stick a peanut butter cup to the front of the cookie. Then use frosting to add either two candy corns or two pretzel sticks on the bottom for “feet.” To make the turkey’s head, attach a malted milk ball with frosting to the top of the peanut butter cup, and stick on candy eyes and a small piece of broken pretzel for the beak. Remove the top chocolate layer from another Oreo. Add a stripe of the icing onto the filling piece and then place the decorated turkey Oreo upright, pushing it slightly to hold it in place. “We usually place all the candies and other items in individual bowls or pre-designate items on paper plates. As kids get older you can have them make multiple turkeys with pumpkin patches and scenery using other candy items,” Thye says. CONTINUED >

17

THANKSGIVING PHOTO CENTERPIECES Buy one Polaroid camera for each child. If necessary, explain how the cameras work and then encourage the kids to take photos of the people, pets, food preparation and/or whatever else they wish at the Thanksgiving get together. Collect the photos along the way, and use photo holders or simple card holders to display the images around the house. Or, you can ask the kids to choose where their photos are placed. “Put them on the food table or around the desserts and people can get a kick out of looking at the images from the day,” Thye says.

A VETERAN’S JOURNEY ARTICLE BY MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY BY SCOTT PRYOR

A local veteran shares his gratitude for his military experiences

When Scott Pryor was just 20 years old, he made a decision that would impact the trajectory of the rest of his life. “It was 2006 and 9/11 was still fresh in our minds,” he recalls. With a strong call to service, he entered the U.S. Army as a Special Forces recruit. Pryor, an Ahwatukee resident and Project Manager at Clarity Construction Group in Gilbert, would go on to serve his country 11 years. During that time, he was part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division as an infantryman who rose through the ranks to serve in a variety of leadership positions. “Everybody does something in their 20s,” Pryor says. “In mine, I served my country and, because of that, became a better person. I’m glad I got to do that.” He shares that his military career took him across the globe. “I served in Kuwait for seven months as a part of Operation New Dawn. I was part of the last group of people to leave Iraq right before Christmas 2011. It felt very exposed and scary; like I was a small part of history. I was honestly just ready to be home for Christmas though.” During his time in the Army, Pryor learned Korean, went to sniper school, was a squad leader among other

26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

leadership roles, and began his education at Grand Canyon University (GCU). He wrapped up his time as a recruiter in Canandaigua, New York. “Those last couple of years of recruiting were really my give-back years,” he shares. “I became a part of and served the community.” He adds that while he enjoyed his time in the military, getting married to his wife Caitlin and becoming a father changed his priorities and he opted for civilian life. Since being honorably discharged in 2017, Pryor earned a bachelor’s in business administration from GCU and a master’s in global management from Thunderbird School of Management. He found a love for management and worked for a short time in Denver before settling back home in Arizona. “My whole family is here in the Valley and it’s an amazing place to raise a family,” he says. When he reflects on his time in the Army, Pryor says that he’s grateful and has no regrets. “Arizona has one of the highest populations of veterans – we’re everywhere. Don’t be afraid to engage in conversations with us and ask us questions,” he says. “I learned so much in my service and am so thankful it impacts me positively to this day.”

C O N V E R S AT I O N S TA R T E R S

Questions to ask a veteran.

1 | Memorable experiences “One of my favorite questions to be asked is ‘Do you have any funny stories from basic training?’” Pryor says. “In fact, one of my favorite things to do is to get together with friends and share stories from our time in service.”

2 | Lessons learned “What did you learn in the service?” can help to spark fascinating conversations about what veterans learned during their time serving their country. You might gain new wisdom too!

3 | Impactful thoughts Pryor shares that a great way to engage with a veteran is to ask them how their military service impacts them today. As a civilian, do they work in the same field as they did in the service? Do they value certain things post-service? Did their service impact their life trajectory?

4 | Why? Asking a veteran why they chose to serve can inspire dialogue and reflection. What’s their why?

5 | Thank you Telling a veteran thank you for their service can help them feel seen and appreciated. Don’t forget that this can happen all year round, not just on Veterans Day. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/A HWAT UKE E
