LIFESTYLE LETTER

May— Celebrating Women Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in herself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed is so beautiful and rewarding. For me personally, celebrating women comes naturally. My heroes and role models were my mother and grandmother. Both were gentle, loving souls, yet hard-working, determined and courageous. I learned from them that seeing the good in the world is always the best approach. I hope I always let their light shine through me and I work every day to try to make my corner of the world a little brighter. In this month’s issue, we are sharing stories of women who work hard to shine a bright light on our community. Let’s take time this month and every month to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life.

Spring Clothing Trends Looking chic when the temperatures rise ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SINCERELY PHOTO AZ

Kim Kendall, fashion stylist and owner of Ahwatukee-based online boutique Clothes Minded (ClothesMindedAZ.com), loves dressing women. “I’ve always loved fashion and how it can transform my look and my mood,” says Kendall. “I truly have clothes on my mind 24/7/365.”

GETTING TO KNOW KIM KENDALL Kendall has called Ahwatukee home for more than a decade. She started Clothes Minded as a brickand-mortar store in 2013. “I have more than 30 years of retail experience, and I pride myself on serving

women rather than selling to them. My customers become my friends, and I love that.” Kendall is mom to three kids, the youngest a senior at Desert Vista. The family loves to travel, and that is a perfect opportunity for Kendall to curate the clothing she wants in her shop. “I love seeing fashion, and I go shopping in local boutiques everywhere we go.” Kendall curates a collection of clothing that looks and feels expensive but is moderately priced. “I want my customers to look like they have spent a lot on their clothes when they really didn’t.”

TURN CLOTHES MINDED INTO YOUR PERSONAL SHOPPING SERVICE Kendall wants to make clothing fun and accessible for Ahwatukee residents. “During COVID, I began delivering locally free and faster than Amazon. I love it so much, and it’s such a valuable service to my customers that I’ve continued to do it.” Kendall says it has been very popular with her customers. “If you see something I’ve posted on Instagram or something in my eblast that you love and want to wear this weekend, for happy hour with the ladies or date night with your husband, just place your order on my website, and I’ll have it delivered in a flash. Uncertain about sizes? I can bring you options to try at home so you’re sure the items will fit and work with your shoes.” Kendall says May is often the beginning of the “clothing crisis” in Arizona. She has some great tips to help you feel cool, chic and beautiful even during the triple-digit days ahead.

THE BEST MATERIALS FOR ARIZONA Kendall says that cotton and linen are the old standbys for what to wear in hot weather because they both breathe and are absorbent. “Cotton gauze is having a huge moment and you can find it in many garments.” Other options for Arizona include rayon and chambray. Both are breathable like cotton, but not as absorbent, which keeps you cooler.

SPRING AND SUMMER COLORS Light colors reflect the sun’s rays, making you feel cooler when you wear them. “I personally love white in the summer because it’s cool and it showcases a tan better than any other color,” Kendall explains. Kendall also suggests that you choose patterns over solids for summer, because if you sweat, the patterned garments conceal it best. Kendall says Very Peri is the Pantone Color of the Year for 2022 (shown on the left). “We have many items with shades of Very Peri for summer.”

STYLE MATTERS Fit also matters in the heat. Kendall recommends loose styles rather than tight styles for the summer. She suggests choosing Pantone Color of the Year

14

“I love a kimono for summer. While it might be 115 outside, the AC makes it frigid inside. A kimono is a nice way to cover your shoulders and take away the chill inside the grocery store.”

off-the-shoulder and sleeveless styles for feeling and looking cooler in the intense Arizona heat. Kendall recommends dresses. “Dresses are an easy option to help you look chic. Pair with sandals and a pair of statement earrings to complete the look.”

ACCESSORIZE FOR SUMMER Kendall recommends that everyone get statement earrings and a hat for summer. A great pair of earrings is better than other accessories in the heat. “Sometimes necklaces and bracelets in various metals can stick to your skin, and that’s not a fun feeling,” Kendall explains. The other staple is a great hat. They now come in such fun colors and an assortment of materials. “I especially love the Fun In The Sun hats on my website,” says Kendall. “They are straw and come in four different colors. Not only do they add a design element to an outfit, they protect your face from the sun.”

“This cotton gauze top may look hot because of the long sleeves, but it will protect your skin from sun exposure, and if you get hot, roll up the sleeves.”

There are more than 18,000 non-profit organizations in the Phoenix-Metro area. For two Ahwatukee residents, non-profits are part of their everyday lives.

SHANTE SAULSBERRY CREATES FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT WOMEN Shante Saulsberry, the founder of Janice’s Women’s Center, is on a mission to help transform lives. The Center is set to be a full-service women’s center helping women who are homeless or who need a safe place to stay during domestic violence disputes. The goal is to be a support system for women in need and assist them in gaining the skills necessary to be successful in the future. The idea came after a chance meeting with a woman on an Ahwatukee street. Saulsberry felt compelled to stop and hear the woman’s story and provide her with a simple meal. After trying several times to get the woman into a shelter and realizing how tough the system is, Saulsberry decided it was time to take matters into her own hands. She created the non-profit, named after the woman she met. “I am now creating miracles for others,” explains Saulsberry. “I don’t feel like I’m living the dream, I feel like I’m dreaming every day.”

FUNDING JANICE’S WOMEN’S CENTER Creating a women’s center is not a cheap venture. Saulsberry is looking to raise $8 million to open her center. To do so, she opened the Janice Vaincre Boutique in June 2021 to help support fundraising efforts. The boutique is run by volunteers, and all the clothing is donated and resold to the community. “So many people have helped our organization spread much-needed awareness,” Saulsberry explains. Victims of domestic violence who are involved in a program, are invited to shop at Janice Vaincre Boutique for free. The experience is aimed at helping encourage women to believe in their own worth and potential. The boutique, at 4302 E Ray Rd. Ste 107, accepts donations of new or slightly used clothing. For more information on Saulsberry’s mission and foundation, visit JanicesWomensCenter.com.

JENNIFER ARMER CREATES FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Ahwatukee resident Jennifer Armer is the founder of the Armer Foundation for Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to easing financial burdens for families with children battling extreme medical or life-changing conditions. Health insurance is not always an option and doesn’t always cover all the care the children or the families need, so the foundation

helps assist with things like co-pays, premiums, deductibles and other necessary medical costs associated with health and eventual healing. Armer and her husband Matt own Armer Air, a Phoenix-based HVAC company. Armer says she found herself meeting families in need through her company, which spurred her to make a change. “I would meet with families facing extreme medical issues with their children and struggling to meet the financial obligations with looming medical bills,” explains Armer. “I knew I needed to help.”

GRASS-ROOTS BEGINNINGS In the beginning, she volunteered by organizing local yard sales, blood drives and other fundraising efforts to help try to offset the growing costs of healthcare for families. Then, Matt brought up the idea of starting her own non-profit to help their neighbors and the local community. “Matt grew up with Type-1 Diabetes, and he watched a close friend’s young daughter lose her battle with cancer, so a foundation to support children with medical and financial needs made perfect sense.”

28

GROWING THE ARMER FOUNDATION FOR KIDS Armer created the Armer Foundation for Kids in 2019, and it has been going strong since. The foundation benefits children ranging from birth to 18 years and their families who are struggling to make ends meet. “We believe a family’s focus should be on the welfare and health of their child, not on medical bills or other financial burdens,” explains Armer. “To alleviate this stress, we focus our efforts on the specific needs of each family. We work to help each of them through fundraisers, blood drives, various events and community donations.” Armer started a thrift shop to help raise funds. The community is a big part of the fundraising efforts. Along with donations to the thrift shop and encouraging neighbors to shop in the store, there is also an annual Gala. The Armer Foundation is always looking for local business sponsors for additional events or to provide raffle prizes. Those interested in donating to the thrift shop or shopping there can stop by 9830 South 51st Street, Suite A128. If you would like to learn more about the Armer Foundation for Kids, please check out the website at ArmerFoundation.org.
