March — Home & Design Hello Ahwatukee! I am your new editor. It’s fitting for me that my inaugural issue is Home and Design. Arizona became my home in 1994. I quickly realized that the desert air, endless blue skies and magnificent sunsets made me feel alive. However, my husband’s job took us away for three years and we returned—home—to Arizona in early 2021.

What is home? It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love and shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Creating that space of joy and comfort isn’t easy and is as unique as each of us. In this issue, we looked around town to get some tips to help you reimagine your own space, whether it’s for a complete renovation, a quick update or home décor tips.

I love seeing the transformation that local Realtor Cynthia Worley made to her own home. I found her suggestions inspiring. I hope you’re as captivated by Mindy Wester’s decorating tips as I am. Wow! I have so many great ideas that I need to try and I’m going to start changing up my pillows and artwork for the seasons. If you’re looking for a place to find unique home décor items and yearn for a road trip, check out my suggestions for a home goods shopping trip to Palm Springs. I had such fun checking out all the stores. And, I was surprised at the variety of décor I found as I wandered from shop to shop.

As much as we all might love our homes, many of us are thinking of exploring this month for Spring Break. As someone who has traveled the world writing about it, I can tell you that there is magic right here in our little corner of the world. So, with that in mind, we created a Spring Break bucket list. Hot air balloon rides, race cars, boating and Old West fun awaits.

I have been a writer and editor for the past three decades, a storyteller at heart and by trade, and I’m looking forward to helping you all share stories about life here in Ahwatukee. AHWATUKEE LUXURY HOME REALTOR CYNTHIA WORLEY OFFERS RENOVATION TIPS Cynthia Worley, CEO and Founder of Stella Realty Group and Keller Williams luxury home Realtor (WorleyTeam.com), opened up her home to showcase her own stunning remodel and offer remodel advice.

Worley has remodeled her home twice, noting that home fashion trends change every 10 years. "I've owned the house for more than 25 years. We purchased in 1996 and, typical of the mid-90s, it had tile counters, whitewash cabinets, light Berber carpet and a sunken living room. Ten years later, in the mid-2000s, we remodeled to the popular Tuscan look—dark stained cabinets, travertine floors, Verde granite slab counters, stainless appliances and oilrubbed bronze fixtures."

Worley's latest remodel was much more extensive.

Today, it's all about open concepts, huge kitchen islands with pot drawers and LED lighting. Getting to a more open concept required removing some things that initially cost extra when the house was built, including decorator niches and pot shelves. She removed the fireplace to open the kitchen and family room. She eliminated the sunken living room by raising the floor and removing the pony wall separating the living and dining rooms. She also removed several niches to enlarge the entrance and a hallway.

"Not everyone wants to move walls, and not every house requires it," explains Worley. "There is a great remodel project for every house. Love your home and have fun!"

Trying to find the best way to style your home and keep it fresh can sometimes feel like a daunting task.

Product stylist Mindy Wester (on Instagram at @ house_on_oak_hill)—East Valley mom of four boys and two chug pugs—shares a few tips that can keep your home décor fresh and fun, without added hassles.

MAKING EVERY ROOM COZY Wester says it's possible to make any room of the house feel welcoming and cozy: • Area rugs create warm and inviting areas. This is especially true with an open floor plan, as rugs help divide the space and draw the eye to one place at a time. Layering rugs can create dimension and add more interest to the overall living space. Rugs are also ideal for adding color to an otherwise neutral color palette.

• Lighting is another excellent way to make a home feel inviting. Although bright white bulbs have been quite popular, you might look at using warmer light bulbs. You can find LED bulbs in a variety of shades now. A warmer light makes such a difference. Candles also create ambient lighting, especially when grouped or displayed as centerpieces.

• Throw blankets scream cozy, Wester says. "You can never have too many!" You can incorporate throw blankets throughout your home. Consider displaying them on a blanket ladder, chair arm or benches, or toss them in decorative baskets. One trend Wester sees is an open concept linen cabinet/shelf/hutch, which makes blankets easily accessible yet decorative.

• Florals add beauty and color to any space and are sure to make everyone smile when they enter a room. There’s something about nature that calms and relaxes us. Fresh flowers from the local grocery store have become very popular. You can set up a standing order with a local florist. Simple long-cut stems are perfect for table styling as well.

CHANGING ACCENTS FOR SEASONS As the seasons change, we feel a nudge to switch up our home décor as well. Swapping out small décor items is a quick and easy way to recreate our spaces.

• Throw pillows are an easy change up for the seasons.

You can get the biggest seasonal bang for the buck if you purchase throw pillow covers rather than bulky pillow inserts. Keep in mind pillow inserts should be 2” larger than the cover for a full look. Use a (faux/ real) down insert if you like that chopped pillow look.

• Update artwork. Something Wester says is fun, easy and increasingly popular is updating artwork each season. This can be as easy as ordering prints on Etsy and using existing frames or buying canvas prints online. Picture ledges are perfect for displaying art above sofas, in small nooks or even stairwells.

• Wreaths are a great seasonal update. Replacing the ribbon or adding a seasonal flower to an existing wreath can freshen things up without much effort. Consider thrift stores for faux stems and wreaths.

• Don't forget the bathrooms! Decorate bathrooms with seasonal plants and change out towels or accents.

Greater Palm Springs—encompassing the desert communities of Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio and Coachella—has long been the place for art, architecture and design. PALM CANYON DRIVE Palm Springs and the other communities stretch along the foot of the mountains, just off I-10. California Highway 111 runs the entire length from Indio in the southern part of the valley to north of Palm Springs. You can go hiking, take the aerial tramway up more than two miles above the valley, go off-roading or get some decorating inspiration with a mid-century modern architecture tour.

my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant Simplicity.

Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
