Arizona Humane Society Breaks Ground on New Papago Park Shelter The Arizona Humane Society broke ground in November on the Rob and Melani Walton Papago Park Campus. Scheduled to open in early 2023, the 72,000-square-foot campus will be located at the juncture of the 202 and 143 freeways in the Papago Park Buttes. With ICUs, a teaching hospital, an expanded trauma hospital and additional adoption space, it will offer medical and behavioral interventions, treatment and care at a level not yet seen in the U.S.

RHOADES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON LIEBROCK Tucked away in a bustling strip mall, Pomegranate Cafe has been an Ahwatukee staple since mother and daughter Marlene and Cassie Tolman opened the healthy-eating restaurant in 2010. Its downhome vibe, with reclaimed wood tables, beverages served in mason jars, colorful images of plants on the walls and glass cases chock-full of delectable vegan and gluten-free pastries, is cozy and welcoming. But what draws diners from around the Valley to this tiny establishment is the Tolmans’ creative menu of fresh, flavorful vegan and vegetarian dishes.

“Our menu is centered around organic plant-based ingredients that are sourced locally and seasonally,” Cassie explains.

“Revitalizing food and pure flavors are at the heart of what we do.

Pomegranate Cafe’s Sweet Chile Tamari Sauce This homemade chile sauce is guaranteed to become a staple in your kitchen. Sweet, savory and spicy, it can be used as a dip or marinade, or it can be used to enhance a variety of dishes, from dumplings and egg rolls to fresh fish, stir fries and vegetables.

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup maple syrup • 2 cups tamari (natural soy sauce) • ¼ cup lime juice • ¼ cup orange juice

Few places in the Valley, let alone the country, have as lavish a menu of outdoor activities within a few minutes’ drive — or walk — as Ahwatukee Foothills.

Nestled snug against the majestic South Mountain Park and Preserve, which is one of the largest municipal parks in the nation, the community has more than 50 miles of equestrian, hiking and mountain biking trails on more than 16,000 acres of pristine desert. And it’s literally in many residents’ backyard.

No matter where you enter South Mountain, urban sprawl soon falls away and you’re transported into a vast, peaceful desert wonderland, with rolling hills, bucolic canyons, towering boulders, giant saguaros and all manner of flora and fauna (coyotes and javelinas are common, and you may occasionally see bobcats).

Cresting over a peak can bring you back to the city, but with rewarding panoramic views.

Ahwatukee has other convenient city and homeowner association parks, but South Mountain is the shining jewel for serious recreation. You might see mountain bike companies testing new models or people training for marathons. You’ll definitely see dogs; maybe horses.

What you won’t see are cars: Once you’re on the trails, no vehicles are allowed, except in emergencies.

Speaking of that, the terrain can be challenging, and it’s easy to get dehydrated or suffer a heat-related illness.

Wear sunscreen, take plenty of water, dress appropriately, practice trail etiquette and watch where you’re going.

If you want fresh air while being more social or competitive, Ahwatukee offers some of the best golf, tennis and pickleball in town. While you can play tennis for free anytime at public courts at Pecos, Sun Ray and Western Star parks, the Ahwatukee Swim, Tennis and Event Center is affordable and accessible. Meanwhile, Pecos Park is the place to be if you’re a pickleball player, and golfers come from far and wide to enjoy the spectacular design, amenities and vistas at Foothills Golf Club.

BIKING/HIKING

Although there are numerous access points into South Mountain Park and Preserve from Ahwatukee neighborhoods, the bustling Pima Canyon Trailhead, 4800 E. Pima Canyon Road, is one of the best places to bike or hike, whether you want a gently sloping in-and-out (great for all ages and abilities) or a more rigorous workout with loops and steeper climbs (such as the Ridge Line or Mormon Loop). Check the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation website and navigate to the South Mountain Park and Preserve page for more information and trail maps.

Foothills Golf Club, at 2201 E. Clubhouse Drive, is a par-72 championship, linksstyle course designed by internationally acclaimed architects Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. Its stunning views alone make it one of the Valley’s top courses, but it also has a four-star ranking from Golf Digest, as well as a putting and chipping green and driving range.

PICKLEBALL

The Pecos Pickleball Club at Pecos Park, 17010 S. 48th St., has a devoted and enthusiastic membership with lessons, clinics, leagues and round robins. The park has 16 courts that opened in 2018, and they’re perennially popular. Get the details online at pecospickleballclub.org. (In the northern reaches of the neighborhood, both tennis courts at Western Star Park also are lined for pickleball.)

TENNIS

Ahwatukee Swim, Tennis and Event Center, 4700 E. Warner Road, has six lighted courts and offers a reservation system, two ball machines, mixed doubles nights and drop-in clinics. It’s one of the best opportunities around to meet other players, and it also hosts league play and lessons. Membership is open to anyone; dues are reasonable and posted on their website.

GET MOVING Looking for a fitness program that’s challenging and fun? Perhaps CrossFit is right for you.

With the start of the new year, people all across the country are making resolutions — to lose weight, to save money, to quit smoking. The most popular resolution, however, is to exercise more. Gyms are suddenly packed with new members, most of whom won’t use their membership past mid-February. Why is that? For some, it’s a decrease in motivation or even an injury caused from the sudden overworking of the body. For others, it’s the disappointment at the lack of immediate results. Then there are those for whom the average global gym, with its rows of cardio machines and smattering of resistance machines, is just too boring.

Enter CrossFit. Developed in 2000, this cross-discipline regimen exploded onto the fitness scene in the early 2010s and has since developed a cult-like following that includes all genders, ages and economic backgrounds — it’s even favored by the Marines and first responders. CrossFit combines elements of aerobic exercise, gymnastics and weightlifting and is designed to increase endurance, strength, stamina, flexibility, balance and agility.

To learn more about this unique fitness program, we sat down with Zach Luke and Analisa Marquez, founders of BLK LBL (pronounced “black label”) Fitness Club. Located at the southwest corner of 48th Street and Chandler Boulevard, BLK LBL has been open for five years and offers 60-minute high-intensity training classes for everyone from beginners to competitive athletes.

AHWATUKEE CITY LIFESTYLE: What is CrossFit and how does it differ from a traditional global gym?

ANALISA MARQUEZ: CrossFit is a functional fitness program. Its athletes — that’s what we call all our members — don’t specialize in anything. They’re not just weightlifters, they’re not just swimmers, they’re not just runners or bikers. They’re good at everything.

The essence of the program is functional fitness. We’re teaching you to be functional in your life.

ACL: Why types of exercises does CrossFit offer?

ZACH LUKE: Wall balls involves squatting and throwing a medicine ball at a target. That movement alone comprises weighted squats and push presses, which translate into the barbell, which we’ll use for clean and jerks. There are AirBikes, which use air resistance, which will suck the soul right out of you. The toes to bar, which pretty much describes itself, takes you into gymnastics. You hang from a pull-up bar and swing your toes up to touch the bar. Then we go back and repeat all the movements.

And we didn’t even talk about the dumbbells, the kettlebells, the rower or the skier.

MARQUEZ: We don’t allow the body to adapt. One day you’re going to be doing long cardio pieces, the next day, we’ll be working on strength, and then maybe we’ll do a sprintstyle workout. That’s what’s cool about CrossFit — you’re not doing one thing the entire time, and your body is always being tested.

LUKE: CrossFit has such a broad level of movements that your interest always stays piqued. There’s always something to learn.

ACL: CrossFit is about community.

Can you elaborate on that?

LUKE: One of the cool things about CrossFit is that there are many different levels of individuals in here.

There are people who played high

school or college sports, and there are those who never played a sport. Some people just want to get in shape in order to play with their grandkids. It runs the gamut of the bodies, and when we do our workouts of the day, no one is stuck in a corner.

You’re in the midst of the group, shoulder to shoulder, which makes a huge difference.

You’re seeing me at my worst, you’re seeing me on my knees, you’re seeing me sweating, you’re seeing me in pain. That exposure shared among these individuals is undeniable, and bonds are created. And I think that’s where that cult of community comes from.

ACL: How can I get started in CrossFit? MARQUEZ: Come on in and get your free trial. The hardest thing is getting people through the door because CrossFit, if you don’t know about it, can be intimidating. You need to trust in our process and give us at least three months to see if this is something for you. CrossFit isn’t for everybody, but if it is, you will get addicted within the first week of your free trial.

Massages have long been considered one of life’s little luxuries — a decadent treat, often associated with days spent lounging in deluxe spas, for people who love pampering. But regular massages have been found to offer a variety of tangible health benefits.

“A lot of us are disconnected from our bodies,” says licensed massage therapist Muzique Broadnax. “We tend to overwork, overuse and push through.” Broadnax, who specializes in deep tissue neuromuscular therapy, is the owner of Balenchino Massage, a mobile service that travels to homes and offices throughout the Valley; she also recently opened a studio near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

“As we age, our body tends to wear and tear, and once your spine starts to curve, your muscle tissue starts to break down, and your ligaments start to tear, you can’t go back,” Broadnax explains. “Older people are finding that massage is more maintenance than luxury.”

She continues, “A lot of people who’ve never had a massage or haven’t had one in a long time are shocked at how much better they feel.”

Studies have found that massage therapy provides relief for a variety of ailments, including low-back pain, neck and shoulder pain, fibromyalgia, headache and more.

According to a survey by the American Massage Therapy Association, 25% of men and 21% of women got massages in 2021. Of those, 63% did so as part of a treatment plan from a doctor or medical provider.
