Now that Lifestyle Magazine is in its sixteenth year, we’ve decided on a new, fresh look for our publication, and we hope that readers like the new cover de sign as much as we do. The magazine’s team is always looking for feedback so please use my email address below to provide it if you’re so inclined. We also love the new looks of spring and our venerable fashion contributor Heather Toskan has rounded up the liveliest styles for the coming season. Time to jazz life up with some colour with fashion finds on page 60. When researching my piece on why North Americans continue to get heavier while trying to eat better, Joanna Rogister, Hom, RHN, BA, had some good news about a very enjoyable way to get healthy fats into our diets: “Your readers will like to hear that dark chocolate – in small doses of course – is high in fat. It also has 11 per cent fibre and contains over 50 per cent of the RDA (recommended daily allowance) for iron, magnesium, copper and man ganese. The chocolate must be at least 70% cocoa.” Check out how to rev up your internal engine with healthy fats on page 51. Speaking of revving in high gear, acclaimed AJAC journalist Clare Dear

has an overview of vehicles that soon will be skimming along area highways on page 38. We know spring has truly sprung when home seekers are fleeing their nests and are house hunting in high gear. They’ll find plenty of food for thought when they check out our Model Home Tour, starting on page 25, and lots of ideas for furnishing the new nest with our overview of this year’s London Spring Home and Garden Show on page 18. Congrat ulations to event organizer Art Bacon and his crew on hosting the show for four decades. The Lifestyle Magazine team hopes you will enjoy spring and enjoy life!

Mark Vaandering, of Millennium Construction and Design, adds that many of his clients are asking for LED lighting to be used as a way to save electricity. “For pot lights, a seven-watt bulb replaces one that’s 50 watts and a valance light is only four watts if it’s LED; that adds up to big savings,” he explains. Replacing windows with ones that block out heat in the summer on west- and southfacing walls can mean reduced air conditioning usage, leading to even more savings, he adds. Consumers have never been more educated about their choices of building materials, according to these renovators. This often means they want as many natural materials from sustainable sources used in their renovation as possible, resulting in more requests for locally sourced products. Like the

In this recent renovation, Duo Building used flooring made from sustainably forested wood and reclaimed brick to add a green factor to this renovation. Because most homeowners are concerned about energy efficiency due to rising electricity costs, they used high-efficiency replacement windows to beautify the home and keep heating and cooling costs down. Like the 100-mile diet lowers the impact that food transportation has on the environment, using locally sourced cabinetry and millwork in a green renovation project also helps the local economy.

Clients are calling for money-saving features to be added to their renovations, and installing water-saving showerheads and LED replacement lights are among the ways that Millennium Construction and Design recommends to achieve this goal.

100-mile-diet calls for foodstuffs from closer to home, sourcing from nearby lessens a home’s carbon footprint. “Using cabinetry, windows, flooring, millwork and doors made locally and stone and limestone products mined in the area means that they aren’t shipped as far and provides jobs to the local labour market,” explains Malloy. Health concerns are also on the list of reasons customers are calling for greener renovations, according to Vaandering. “Fifty per cent of our clients don’t want carpet or vinyl because of formaldehyde off-gassing.” Low or no-VOC paint is now standard because of concerns about allergies and breathing issues for many families. Celebrating

four decades of success

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

STILL LOVING THE SPRING HOME AND GARDEN SHOW

a

lthough times have changed dramatically

since 1977 – a time when cars were big and guzzled gas and disco was the dance craze – one thing that has remained a constant in London is the Spring Home and Garden Show. Southwestern Ontario’s largest lifestyle tradeshow, which heralds the arrival of spring with the latest trends for indoor and outdoor living, is celebrating its fortieth anniversary April 15 to 17 at the Metroland Media Agriplex Western Fair District. “We’re excited about our fortieth year,” says director Art Bacon. “We’re pulling together a little nostalgia area to show things from 1977, so people can look back and have a bit of fun with it.” But throughout the rest of the show, attendees will find new and innovative ideas for renovating, gardening and landscaping and more from more than 330 exhibitors. 

When it’s time to talk tech, it’s time to talk to Carmi Levy, who has built a local and national reputation as the media’s go-to for well-reasoned opinions on technology-related subjects of the day on CTV and Canada AM. Levy will inform show audiences about the latest and greatest in technology for the home.

Over 30 Years of Excellence With a personal garden worthy of coverage in Canadian Living, Gardening Life, Canadian Gardening and Gardening How-To, Paul Zammit is as passionate about environmentally responsible gardening practices as he is about creating a beautiful outdoor space. When not busy speaking about his favourite subject, Zammit is the Nancy Eaton Director of Horticulture at the Toronto Botanical Garden.

OPERATING IN SW ONTARIO FOR OVER 50 YEARS

A major feature this year, Bacon says, is the introduction of the “She Shed”: women’s answer to the man cave. “They’re very popular in Europe and coming this way.” These themed and decorated backyard retreats can be places to pursue a hobby or just sit back and relax with some wine and music. Bacon is working with local builders to present three or four themed samples as a focal feature in the outdoor living and landscape section. Advances in technology will also be front and centre as Carmi Levy brings his considerable expertise to the show stage. A technology analyst and journalist currently working in digital marketing with Bell Media’s London radio stations and CTV London, Levy will be addressing issues related to smart home  Stewart Overhead dOOr has built an exceptional reputation due to our superior products and quality installations with qualified, trained employees. HAYHOE HOMES

H

ayhoe Homes’ neighbourhood of upscale Towns is something new for St. Thomas, says company partner Joe Hayhoe. “You can’t buy a trendy brand-new townhome anywhere else in the city,” he says. And the price is right, he adds, noting that, with prices starting in the low $200s, it’s possible to have a mortgage payment that’s less than the monthly rent for similar units. Hayhoe also stresses that these are not condominiums and do not have monthly fees. The attached four-unit clusters include three- and four-bedroom units with two and a half bathrooms, including the master ensuite. Each has a single-car garage with a double drive for additional parking. Standard features include hardwood and ceramic flooring, central air and a high-efficiency furnace with a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) air exchange system. The presentation centre showcases upgrades including a rear deck and finished lower level. Hayhoe says considerable effort went into creating exteriors with stunning curb appeal and a master-planned streetscape he describes as “warm, a little bit trendy and very with the times. We’ve laid it out with different designs and colour packages complementing each other. It’s very coordinated.” The neighbourhood will also include walking trails that will eventually connect with a citywide trail system.

FOREST PARK HOMES

F

orest Park Homes thinks buyers will fall in love with Amour in Riverbend, its collection of 89 executive townhomes in West London’s Riverbend community. Two-storey homes – 1,299 to 1,730 square feet, including three bedrooms and one and a half or two and a half bathrooms – are available in four designs. Purchasers have a choice of “stunning design features and endless options to create their home,” says Forest Park’s Erin Morschauser. These include a carpet-free main floor with ceramic tile in the kitchen, bath, mudroom, entrance and laundry room, as well as California-style textured ceilings and an optional fireplace in the great room. Designer streetscapes showcase French-inspired exteriors, combining brick with striking stone accents. Morschauser says elements that set this townhome community apart from others in the city are wider lots, at 23 feet, and the fact that residents own their lot. All homes have direct access to backyards, which may be fenced to create a private oasis, she adds. The community backs onto Riverbend Park, which features a network of walking trails and a playground. Forest Park is also developing an enclave of 42 townhomes in its Central Park neighbourhood in Fanshawe Ridge on London’s northeast boundary. Model homes are open for viewing in both communities.

luxurious modern loft condos

orth Point Lofts, London’s first modern loft condo project, is now taking shape on the city’s central northern boundary in the heart of the Masonville district. The sprawling four-storey structure, built by Domus Developments, will comprise 51 boutique condo residences ranging from 1,100 to 2,000 square feet. They will offer one-, two- and three-bedroom units in seven unique designs. The open-concept suites, with 10- and 12-foot ceilings and full-height, energy-efficient windows, have an airy ambiance that’s enhanced by outdoor living spaces, says project developer Mike Mescia. Oversized balconies, including wraparounds on corner units, range up to 500 square feet, and main-level units have private fenced courtyards. Standard finishes include granite counters and engineered hardwood and ceramic tile flooring. Each unit has its own air handler for heat and air conditioning, and gas service is available for stoves, fireplaces and outdoor barbecues. Amenities from shopping to theatre to casual or fine dining are literally at the North Point doorstep, Mescia says. A pathway through a landscaped forest garden, being developed as part of the project, will lead directly into Masonville. As well, medical facilities, Western University and several premier golf courses are just a short drive away.

urrounded by nature, with ponds and a ravine, yet on the doorstep of the Upper Richmond Village commercial district and minutes from Masonville, Meadows of Sunningdale offers the best of both urban and rural lifestyles. The condominium community, from Domus Developments, comprises 56 units, 2,200 to 2,400 square feet, with main-floor living complemented by a second-storey loft open to the floor below. This enhances the contemporary design and expands usable space, says project developer Mike Mescia. Stone and stucco exteriors and flat roofs suggest a modern European style, he adds. Spacious decks for outdoor living enhance the natural setting. Standard interior features include hardwood floors, porcelain tile, glass showers, custom kitchens, eight-foot doors and 10-foot ceilings that vault to 18 feet in the great rooms, which are open to the lofts. There are four layouts for the units, which include a master retreat, with ensuite bath and walk-in closets, as well as an additional bedroom or den. Mescia stresses that, as with all Domus projects, these are customizable. “You don’t have to go with what we include,” he says. “We have an infinite package and we’re very flexible to let our customers make changes.”

Detroit Auto Show kicks transportation into high gear The North American International Auto Show, more commonly known as the Detroit Auto Show, continues to be the most important automotive expo on the planet. This year, 700-plus vehicles were on display, including more than 50 that were making their global or North American debuts.

Acura took the wraps off its Precision Concept, which incorporates the bolder, more distinctive designs we will see in future models. Its design focuses on performance and prestige with its low, athletic stance, long dash-to-axle ratio, deeply sculpted surfaces and new diamond pentagon grille. The dramatic interior design includes a double-layered instrument panel, high-contrast front seat surfaces, ultra-thin rear seats and speaker grilles made of exotic wood.

AuDi

Two Audis made their global debuts: the Audi A4 Allroad Quattro and the Audi H-tron Quattro concept. The A4 Allroad Quattro features a sharper exterior design highlighted by a striking new front end. Its all-wheel Quattro drive system, plus a 34-millimetre gain in ground clearance, makes it suited for all driving conditions. Meanwhile, the Audi H-tron Quattro concept demonstrates the potential of fuel cell technology. It delivers high range and sporty performance by combining all-electric drive with a hydrogen fuel cell.

LincoLn

Lincoln introduced its new flagship, the Continental: an elegant full-size sedan powered by a new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine. The standard all-wheel drive system is paired with Dynamic Torque Vectoring that transfers torque on demand to the appropriate rear wheel during cornering. The exterior design projects an athletic profile while the interior features include Perfect Position seats, which can be adjusted to the individual’s body shape and weight.

When Lexus unveiled its LF-LC Concept four years ago, many wondered if its dramatic styling and proportions would ever evolve into a production coupe. Now we have the answer: the LC 500. Lightweight materials – such as carbon fibre in the roof, aluminum door skins and a composite trunk floor – have helped reduce weight. Power is supplied by a 5.0-litre V8 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

VoLVo

The Volvo XC90 luxury SUV, which features a new platform and powertrain, plus semi-autonomous driving technologies, was named North American Truck of the Year, while the S90 sedan made its North American debut. Canadians are floCking to glen Burn trail in elliCottville

anting to provide families with an experience that paralleled hers as child, Canadian Jennifer McNally is developing five acres of property, called Glen Burn Trail, in Ellicottville, New York. Just south of Buffalo, New York, Londoners have long made the three and half hour drive to this pretty village each winter to ski. Now being promoted as a year-round destination, with golf courses and an aerial adventure park, there are even more reasons to consider a vacation home there. Residing in Hamilton, Ontario the McNally family skied in Ellicottville each winter during her childhood and, at that time, owning a second home there was affordable. During the real estate boom of the early 2000s, she saw prices jump,

TOP Semi-detached townhouse-style condominiums feature garages, separate entries and direct access to a ski locker for larger units.

making owning a vacation home out of reach for most families. “If we wouldn’t have had a vacation home there, we wouldn’t have those family memories,” McNally explains. An experienced project manager and urban planner, McNally took on the venture with her father Chris McNally of C&M Engineering in Hamilton. They began development on the project in 2011. The three- and four-bedroom condominiums feature a variety of styles, from rustic to modern, and start at $250,000 (USD). “We’ve combined quality construction, affordable pricing, family-friendly environment with design elements that are desirable without being in the same echelon as million dollar homes,” says McNally. There are three buildings with nine

units, five of which are currently occupied by owners as full-time homes or vacation residences. At build-out there will be 37 units in 16 buildings. Because of its central location, the development attracts buyers from Ontario, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. They like that Glen Burn Trail is surrounded by trees, has a great view of the Allegheny Mountains, is close to the ski hills and is a five minute walk to all the shopping and nightlife of Ellicottville’s downtown. n

MIDDLE The open-concept design extends through the dining area, which includes sliding patio door access to an outdoor patio for al fresco dining or stargazing at night.

Economical, affordable metal roofing enhances the beauty and value of any home.

Eco-Metal offers solid roofing solutions

By John Milner

B

efore London Eco-Metal Manufacturing opened its doors for business in 2009, president Joe Malec didn’t like what he saw when it came to the options the average family had for getting a solid roof for their homes at a reasonable price. “We want to change that. We want to provide affordable roofing, something the average-earning family would be able to own,” Malec says. Malec and the staff at this familyowned and -operated business (including his brother, Darek, and cousin, Jerry) understand that people take pride in their homes.

“Whether it’s our dream home or the home we work every day for, we just want a decent roof on our house.” People have enough to worry about, Malec says. His company wants to provide a roofing solution that will last his customers the rest of their lives and help protect the investment they have made in their property. Eco-Metal offers “a little different approach” from most roofing com-

panies, including manufacturing, selling and installing the product for contractors and homeowners alike. Additionally, many of their locations include showrooms where customers can “touch, feel and scratch,” as Malec puts it, and talk to the company’s experts. “A lot of good people work here,” Malec says. “They love what they do.” The staff are also confident enough in the product that many of them have purchased London Eco-Metal’s products for themselves and their families. “It is what we sell (and) we believe in it,” Malec says. “Whether it’s our dream home or the home we work every day for, we just want a decent roof on our house.” b

Stratford iS home to thiS well-Staged Stunner By Jill Ellis-Worthington

I

t took a massive renovation to move this residence from its ill-conceived 1980s sprawling additions to a wide open, graceful place of light and beauty. Renowned architect Luc Bouliane was engaged by current owners Rick White and Sandy Bourque to open up its mishmash of small, dark rooms so the house could live up to its modernist roots. “The house was a 1950s design and a modern style most suited any renovation,” says the couple, reasoning that losing its 80s fussiness in favour of the sleek lines favoured by mid-century architects would be best. Now on the market for $1,475,000, the home’s five and a half acres call for new owners who love nature, and its gallery settings would be perfect for those who collect art. 2 3. The kitchen is positioned with a view of the serene solitude of the backyard. Honed granite countertops, an oversized island and high-end appliances make this a chef’s dream. All rooms with marble or ceramic flooring, including the kitchen, feature in-floor heating.

3 1. This home offers wide-open spaces and lots of light with an open floor plan and a wall of windows that allows dwellers to enjoy looking at nature’s beauty. The windows slide open to reveal the expansive backyard that wanders down to the river that runs through it. 2. A Brazilian wood deck leads from home to pool, which is surrounded by a natural stone patio. This home is located in a very quiet neighbourhood of similarly sized lots and bordered by a golf course, so privacy is assured.

The couple wanted space to display their art collection, so the upstairs hallway was renovated to accommodate it in a gallery-like setting. There are five bedrooms and five bathrooms on the second floor in this home that was built in 1952 and fully renovated in 2010. “It is essentially a brand-new home,” says Cammileah Beth, lead broker for southwestern Ontario with Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. 4. The second-floor landing provides a secluded place to read and serves as a family room for its owners. With stained engineered hardwood flooring, wood-burning fireplace, uniquely coffered ceiling and oversized windows, it can be used as more gallery area or a warm work space. n March/April 2016

Linda Relouw and daughter Amy Relouw-Gelinas followed their dream of opening a business together and putting their talents to work. The duo opened Bittersweet in May 2014 beside Aunt Gussie’s restaurant on Highway 21. With unique home and cottage furniture pieces, garden accents, giftware and the popular van Gogh fossil paint, it is easy to get in touch with your creative side at Bittersweet. Customers

The store also offers workshops on painting, embossing and other techniques to make a home feel special. Relouw-Gelinas says the goal is to create a place where customers can walk through the door and feel at ease. “It’s very calming. Magical microgreens

Tiny, TasTy and ready To rev up your dishes

I

t seems to me that a fine dining experience is incomplete without the complement of gorgeous, crisp, fresh-cut microgreens. Microgreens are tiny versions of some of our favourite herbs, vegetables and lettuces that are ready to harvest with the snip of scissors. Some of the most popular are basil, arugula, beet, amaranth, broccoli, radish and celery. They are generally fast-growing, bright, colourful and available yearround. For years, professional chefs have used these as the perfect complement to soups, salads, mains and desserts, and now it’s time for you to try them in your own dishes. Not only do microgreens enhance the appearance and taste of your dishes, but they also have an extended shelf life, are highly sustainable and have nutritional value that exceeds their larger counterparts pound for pound. From germination to harvest, most varieties are ready for the table in two to four weeks. They can be grown in

windowsills, patio planters and indoor living walls, so it is very practical to grow your own. No green thumb? Not to worry. Microgreens can be found at grocery stores and farmer’s markets, and you can even source them through independent growers. I have been a fan of Slegers Living Organic Greens in Strathroy for some time. If you’ve frequented a fine dining establishment within a two-hour radius of Slegers, I bet you’ve been treated to a taste that results from their hard work. When trying microgreens in your own dishes, it is great to experiment with the different flavour profiles that they offer, including sweet, bitter, nutty and a touch of heat. Most microgreens offer the same characteristics as their larger counterparts but are often more delicate and refined. Micro radish is perfect for adding a touch of fragrance and heat. Micro basil has the same punch as the fully developed leaves, with

powerful aroma and bright flavour. Micro arugula will bring that familiar slight bitterness and peppery accent. Pea shoots are one of my favourites because popping some in your mouth tastes just like fresh peas. Micro pea and broccoli make my Kaleidoscope Quinoa Salad (pictured above) a hit. With roasted heirloom carrots and beets, broccoli, quinoa and vinaigrette, this salad is pretty heavy, but the micro pea shoots and broccoli add a savoury freshness and sweetness to balance the flavours. As a professional chef, I can’t get enough of these varieties. As chefs and diners today find a renewed focus on nutrition and sustainability, these little beauties are just the ticket.

Free music program Finds a new home

A community of music By Jay Menard

T

he move of the El Sistema Aeolian free music program into a historic London church was a natural fit. After all, Aeolian Hall founder and executive director Clark Bryan is quick to preach the merits of the program and its benefit to local youth. The program provides free orchestral and choral instruction to children ages six through 14. Bryan says the program fills a cultural gap in our education system. “As a society, we do a terrible job with education, and programs like this change the paradigm,” Bryan explains. He points to the fact that several schools don’t have a functioning music program, especially in economically depressed areas.

Sofia and Leon (inset) are just two of the hundreds of children who will benefit from expanding the El Sistema program when it moves to Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church (above).

“Instead of being resigned to poverty, these kids see opportunities. By being

able to play an instrument today, they are going to be the ones supporting orchestras in the future.” This extends to educational opportunities. El Sistema students have performed at venues across the city, including at Western University. Bryan sees a long-term benefit to its participants as a result of the demystification of these institutions. “Many of these kids would never have thought about university,” Bryan says. “But because they’ve been able to perform at the university, it now becomes possible. They can say, ‘I’ve been to the university before. They seem nice. Maybe I can go there.’” El Sistema was formerly housed in the Lorne Avenue Public School but Continued on page 54 March/April 2016

needed to find longer-term accommodation elsewhere. Due to declining numbers of parishioners, the venerable Bishop Cronyn Memorial Anglican Church became available and the program now has a long-term home. El Sistema moved in January and, thanks to a seven-year lease with a first right of refusal option, it will be there for the foreseeable future. Not only does this potentially allow the program to expand from 100 to upwards of 300 participants, Bryan says, it also supports the community’s efforts to revitalize the East Village. Though there may be naysayers, Bryan says to just look at The Aeolian’s history for a glimpse of the future. “We did it before and we’ll do it again. They said we couldn’t do it 12 years ago and look where we are now,” Bryan says. “The community were the first ones there with paintbrushes and hammers to help. “I invite those people who don’t think this will work to come down and just spend time with us and watch.” And, while watching, chances are they’ll hear some of the sweetest sounds imaginable. n

H

eading to Sin City is a regular sojourn for many couples but isn’t high on others’ lists. If you long for a reasonably priced warm weather getaway, then Vegas should be considered because there’s so much more to do than sinning. Staying at an off-Strip resort can be a less expensive and more enjoyable way to experience this desert destination. Many time-share communities, like Tahiti Village, aren’t too far off the main drag and offer special room rates to non-owners. Tahiti Village offers shuttles to two of the main casinos every 30 minutes. Gambling isn’t the only way to get an adrenaline rush. At Gun Garage, a Rambo-like experience awaits. Shooting an Uzi is definitely a thrill, and you’re in good hands with fully qualified instructors with you at all times. If you have the need for speed, try the Richard Petty Driving Experience and ride around the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in a NASCAR. With a race car driver behind the wheel, those three laps go fast and make the big oval seem small. It’s definitely a thrill but you’re fully protected by a fire suit, harness and helmet.

ATVing through the desert is another thrill that must be experienced. Taking in the beauty of this harsh habitat while strapped in and armed with a communication-capable helmet is exciting. The trained guides of Zero1 Desert Adventures are excellent wranglers, so you won’t be left behind. A more sedate way to enjoy the beauty of the desert is to hike Red Rock Canyon, just a 30-minute drive from the Strip. Watch the changing colours of red and orange as the day slides into sunset in the surrounding hills when hiking one of 19 marked trails. Tripping along the original Strip – now labelled the Fremont Street Experience – brings to life the romance of yesteryear, when cowboys and mafiosos ruled the city. Take a tour with Las Vegas Pop Culture Tours, and ask your guide Babs about her time as personal assistant to Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow. Treat your weary body to a sumptuous meal at Oscar’s, owned by and named for long-time mayor Oscar Goodman, who is as famous for his movies and mafia ties as he is his politics. Along with delicious food and an extensive wine list, this place affords a splendid

bizlife When cottage ownership meets ageing demographic, the need for beach trams becomes clear. For many couples, it is the difference between living their beachside dream or having to move to somewhere more accessible.

Skip the stairs By Kathy Rumleski

Cobble Design invites you to take the tram insteaD It’s a perfect sun-filled day as you look down over the water from the comfort of your beachside property. A walk along the shore would be invigorating… but the steps down to the beach are in disrepair. With spring upon us, many people are thinking of days at the lake and fun in the sun. A Zurich company can help ensure everyone can get to the beach safely any time. Cobble Design has been in the landscaping business since 1988. The company partnered with Minnesota’s Marine Innovations in 2013 after realizing, during an extensive project, that there is a demand for a Canadian distributor for hillside trams. “We really immediately recognized the need,” says Cam Steckle, who owns Cobble Design with his brother Brian. 56 Lifestyle March/April 2016

From aging baby boomers to young families with kids and beach gear in tow, hillside trams make sense, he says. A tram system will ensure family and guests of all ages and abilities are able to access the lake safely and easily. Steckle says the structure of the system used is galvanized steel and the carriage is a powder-coated aluminum that is corrosion-resistant. There are also accessories for different needs. Safety is paramount and the tram has a patented brake system. Other variables that come into play with beach tram systems include deck work and opening up any treed areas where the tram would be installed. Steckle says no excavation is needed for the support structure and there’s no disruption to the stability of the soil. When considering Cobble Design’s trams, Brian Steckle suggests consumers think about the number of vehicles they’ve purchased over the years.

“Investing in something like a tram is the cost of a good car and it lasts a lifetime.” He and his brother are pleased they can allow owners to stay on their property longer. A St. Joseph couple was able to remain in their home thanks to the installation of a tram. “They were reaching a point in their lives where the missus could no longer do the stairs,” Cam Steckle says. “We put one of these in and allowed them to stay in their current place. When she rode (the tram) for the first time, she had tears in her eyes.” Cobble Design will have a booth at the Bayfield Lions Club Home and Garden Show, which begins on April 22. n FOR MORE INFORMATION Cobble Design 519-565-7373 • www.cobbledesign.com

Living

the low-fat lie ByJill Ellis-Worthington

Why are Canadians heavier than ever?

A

ccording to Statistics Canada, one in four adult Canadians – about 6.3 million people – were obese in 2011–2012. Since 2003, the proportion of Canadians who are obese has increased 17.5 per cent. Many professionals in the health and nutrition fields attribute this to the false idea of eating a low-fat diet popularized in the 1960s and ’70s. Saturated fats were thought to contribute to many chronic health issues at that time. But since the population is collectively becoming fatter than ever, we begin to see that this is not the case. 

Eating fats and protein speed up metabolism. If you’re looking for weight loss, add healthy fats and proteins to your diet.” Joanna Rogister

“We need good fats and (some people) aren’t getting enough of the natural oils and healthy fats they need to have a healthy body.” According to Charlene Doak-Gebauer, a natural nutrition clinical practitioner, part of the problem may lie with the overconsumption of foods labelled low fat. “Lower fat versions of foods often have higher sugar content; you have to get the flavour from somewhere,” she says. Joanna Rogister, a registered holistic nutritionist, gives an example. “Products like light mayonnaise – when they pull out the fat, they have to fix the flavour. To do that they add chemicals or sugars or salt to make up for it.” While we fool ourselves into feeling virtuous – and probably eating more of the lower-fat versions of our favourite foods because they feel ‘safe’ – we are actually eating more sugar, chemicals and salt. According to the book Staying Healthy with Nutrition by Elson Haas and Buck Levin, an adult woman who is average height (5’5”) and weight (155 to 160 pounds) should eat 1,800 to 2,000 calories per day. According to Rogister, 630 of those

SouRCeS of HealtHy fatS How do you get more healthy fats into your diet? Eat more of the following that have been recommended by health professionals. • Avocados • Olives and olive oil • Coconut oil • Whole eggs • Nuts: walnuts, peanuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, pecans, cashews • Seeds: sunflower, sesame, pumpkin, flaxseed, chia seeds • Fish: salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, trout, sardines • Dark chocolate (must be at least 70 per cent cocoa) calories should derive from protein and healthy fats. There are nutritious ways to ingest those desirable fat grams. “An egg yolk has 11 grams of fat,” she says, “and all the flavour and nutrition is found in the yolk, so people who only eat the whites are missing out.” According to Doak-Gebauer, “A balanced diet is what’s necessary. We need good fats and (some people) aren’t getting enough of the natural oils and healthy fats they need to have a healthy body.” Rogister agrees. “Eating fats and protein speed up metabolism. If you’re looking for weight loss, add healthy fats and proteins to your diet.” So go ahead and eat butter, coconut or olive oil in moderation, as they are healthy fats. Both professionals agree that eating margarine – even if it is labelled non-hydrogenated – is inadvisable as it is not a natural food. n FOR MORE INFORMATION
