turning the page on winter

When the winter snow begins to recede, it's going to be the most wonderful surprise to see my patio again. A professional landscaper redesigned it last summer and it's now a delightful Japanese garden with miniature evergreens that resemble sculptures. I'm particularly fond of a beautiful little groundcover I had never heard of before – an Angelina stonecrop – that resembles an evergreen with its needle-like foliage. Now my only concern will be selecting garden accents that set off my tiny evergreens to their best advantage. Spring is very much on everyone's minds here at Lifestyle. No March issue would be complete without a feature on the 38th London Spring Home and Garden Show, which takes place this year from April 11 to 14. More than 300 exhibitors will have products on display, as well as tips for home decorating, landscaping, gardening and renovations. This issue: We also have a mix of stories about interesting new developments, businesses and products. Writer Ellen Ashton-Haiste has profiled a new condo community, VillageNorth, that's being built in north London by The Tricar Group. The 14-storey, 153suite building will offer residents panoramic views, as well as a nearly 12,000-square-foot entertainment and fitness facility. If a new car is in your future this spring, you'll want to read our feature by automotive journalist Clare Dear. Clare has reviewed a handful of luxury automobiles for 2014 and 2015. Signing off: After 13 years of working for Lifestyle, this issue will be my last. I've been struggling with back problems for the last four years and I'll be having surgery in a few months' time, followed by a year-long recovery. I've been very fortunate to work with a team of immensely talented and creative people at Lifestyle. It's also been rewarding to reconnect with my former editor Clare Dear, who unwittingly launched my career as a housing writer in the early 1990s while we were both working for The London Free Press. Jill Ellis-Worthington, a long-time London writer and editor, will take over my position as of the May issue.

sifton new homes RIVERBEND GOLF COMMUNITY The Abbey is one of the newer home plans in RiverBend Golf Community, Sifton Properties’ active adult lifestyle development in west London. RiverBend originated 14 years ago as an early Ontario masterplanned community for the retiring boomer demographic. It will eventually encompass 450 homes bordering its 18-hole course, designed by golf-course architect Doug Carrick. Surrounded by farmland and Carolinian forest, RiverBend is just minutes away from downtown London with its shopping, entertainment and heath-care facilities. The 2,188-square-foot, one-floor Abbey model home features an all-brick exterior, a covered front porch and a two-car garage. Inside, generous room sizes offer ample space for entertaining. On the right, off a spacious foyer, is a den with a vaulted ceiling that could double as an office. A laundry room, accessible from the garage, and a two-piece bathroom are conveniently located on the left. At the rear of the home, the kitchen opens to an expansive great room/dining room that overlooks a covered porch. The bedrooms are private, set apart from the main living areas. The master bedroom retreat has a spacious walk-in closet and a luxurious ensuite bathroom with a double vanity, tub and shower. The second bedroom also has its own ensuite bathroom.

rembrandt homes STONEBRIDGE ON SUNNINGDALE The Kane, one of a few bungalow-with-loft model homes in Rembrandt Home’s Signature Series collection in Stonebridge On Sunningdale, is proving an attractive option for empty nesters. “It has a main-floor master suite and the loft is ideal for guests, like visiting children and grandchildren,” says sales representative Christine Davies. The bungalow features a covered front porch adjacent to a two-car garage. Inside, the foyer opens to a study/bedroom, as well as a four-piece main bathroom and laundry room. Beyond is an open-concept great room, kitchen and dining area, and the master suite with an ensuite bathroom. The bathroom includes a walk-in closet, double vanity, shower and corner soaker tub. The master bedroom and dining area open to a partially covered wood deck. An open maple staircase leads to the loft, which encompasses a bedroom and a four-piece bathroom. The loft also overlooks the great room below. The lower level includes a bedroom and bathroom, as well as recreation and games rooms with a walk-out to a patio. Davies notes that the community still has two walk-out lots available where this home could be built. The north London community borders the Sunningdale Golf and Country Club; the Masonville shopping district is nearby.

doug tarry homes ORCHARD PARK The newest model home from Doug Tarry Homes showcases more than an attractive floorplan and decorative upgrades. The Edenbrook, in St. Thomas’s south-end Orchard Park com munity, is a Discovery Home and a participant in Union Gas’s Optimum Home Program, which encourages builders to increase the energy efficiency of their homes. This model home also demonstrates two pilot projects aimed at providing improved comfort, better indoor air quality and reduced energy use. An innovative basement wall system, which incorporates a “smart membrane,” is designed to reduce vapour collection and the resulting mould. As well, Doug Tarry Homes is working with Dettson Furnaces to incorporate “right-sized” furnace equipment, better suited to today’s tighter, more energy-efficient homes. The 2,170-square-foot, two-storey home also features upgrades including an alarm system, a fully insulated two-car garage, and hardwood and ceramic tile flooring throughout the interior. The main floor includes laundry facilities and an open-concept kitchen, morning room and great room across the rear of the home, which opens to a deck. The second storey comprises an upper landing that overlooks the two-storey foyer, as well as four bedrooms. The master retreat includes a spa-like ensuite bathroom. The unfinished lower level could incorporate a family room, a hobby room and a three-piece bathroom.

donwest custom homes DALEWOOD MEADOWS and LITTLE CREEK The St. Thomas and Elgin Home Builders’ Association 2013 Best Model Home is one of three homes being showcased by Donwest Custom Homes. The Langford – in Dalewood Meadows, in St. Thomas’s north end – is a 1,500-square-foot, two-bedroom bungalow. Art Pol, Donwest’s vice president, says the home appeals to the retiree demographic. The home comes with many upgrades, including a finished lower level. The focal point of the great room is a fireplace with an overmantel that’s comprised of dry stacked and polished stone, balanced on either side by floating shelves. The overmantel draws the eye upward to the ceiling. “We really concentrate on different ceiling lines in almost every room, either a cathedral or a tray,” Pol notes. “The foyer in this home has a black ceiling with black crown moulding, so it’s set apart distinctly.” Across the street, the two-storey, 1,958-square-foot Hampton with four bedrooms is designed for a family.

Other bright colours in demand this spring include orange, red, fuchsia and royal. If you prefer softer hues, a slew of designer-driven pastels, including peach, lilac, mint and soft pink also dress to impress. Navy and sandy beige are strong contenders for neutral territory this spring, joined by dove grey which surfaces in combination with other colours such as lemon yellow and white. If colour is not your strong suit, solid neutrals of black and white offer plenty of presence, in colour-blocked, checked and striped fashions. Floral, paisley, nautical, animal and soft abstract prints are among the other patterns at play on clothes and accessories, including the many flowing scarves that remain must-haves.

Tailored, sporty and feminine fashions take soft turns in cotton knits, sandwashed denim, light-weight chiffon, polyesters and other materials with a light hand. “Many of my clothes are lightweight knits made of natural fabrics such as bamboo and spandex,” says Trish Wiggell, owner of the recently opened Bijou Boutique in Byron. “I like to support Canadian designers who seem to understand that Canadian women like to look stylish while remaining comfortable,” adds Wiggell, who stocks several Canadian fashion labels as well as others from Paris, New York City, the U.K. and California.

According to Wiggell, “smart-casual separates and easy-to-wear flowing and cotton tie-dyed dresses” are just a few of the many spring styles that are currently in bloom at her shop. The season's dresses, tops and skirts often feature ease and volume. High-low hem lines, gathering and draping are all fashionable features on tops, dresses and skirts. Other spring trends include softly fitted trousers that drape and taper in at the ankle to offer a fashion-forward casual look that pairs well with gussied-up sportswear-inspired tops, including coordinating tanks and hoodies. “Body-skimming, figure-flattering spring styles include Capri pants and slightly looser- fitting pants silhouettes,” Ariesen says. “Some of the new loose pants feature gathered hem lines and are made of crinkled material for an easy-towear style that can be dressed up or down.” Below: Black-and-white colour-block sleeveless dress is from the Spanner 2014 Spring Collection.

Versatile clothing pieces appear as a common theme that runs throughout much of spring fashion. Knee-length tunic tops that can be worn solo as dresses or paired with Capri pants or leggings are especially popular and go virtually anywhere. Other versatile spring looks include softly coloured knit motocross-inspired jackets, textured sweaters, and a modern spin on twin sets that pairs tanks with coordinating hoodies. Finesse your look with accessories. Flowing scarves, long necklaces, dangling earrings and stacks of bracelets all remain important. Tan and pastel-coloured shoes and spring ankle boots are updated with cutouts, lace-up and ankle-strap styling. Floral and geometric patterns also jazz up the season's many pointy-toed flats and pumps.

SPRING MAKEUP ARTISTRY

THE LATEST MAKEUP TRENDS CAN BE ADAPTED TO ANY STYLE

By Heather Toskan It may be too cool to wear your new warm-weather clothes, but you can still spring forward by updating your look with the latest makeup tips and trends. “We've had a long, cold winter,” says Allison Rinkel, a London-based makeup artist. “Depending on one's personal preferences and the type and amount of makeup applied, women of any age can adapt the latest spring makeup trends to suit their style.” Whether you prefer natural or more colourful-looking makeup, achieving an even, glowing skin tone is the first step towards creating a polished canvas for spring makeup.

The model's blue eyes are accentuated by golden bronze metallic eye shadow on the lids and around the lower eyelid. Eyes are highlighted with soft champagnecoloured eye shadow. Brown eyeliner and brown-black mascara follow through on the natural makeup theme.

Washed-out skin tone, blotchiness, dark circles and dull, flaky dehydrated skin are common at any age, but are usually more pronounced on women aged 35 and up. These issues and others can be improved by the use of moisturizer, skin primer, corrector-concealer, foundation, CC (Complete Correction) and BB (Beauty Balm) creams, each of which offers varying degrees of moisture, coverage, protection and luminescence. “I often recommend moisturizing with natural oils, such as coconut oil, which helps to give skin a dewy, luminous look. Follow with a makeup primer to lay the groundwork for a professional-looking makeup application that lasts,” says Rinkel. Translucent, peach and pink-coloured makeup primer can be applied with the fingers to fill in enlarged pores, minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and give skin a smooth, healthy appearance. Translucent makeup primers work well on any skin tone, while peach and pink-tinged primers can help add “warmth” to ashy and pale skin tones. Red blotchy areas, broken capillaries, dark under-eye circles and other

discoloured areas are often the result of sun damage and are typically more prevalent with mature skin. To neutralize and cover redness and other areas of discolouration, apply a yellow or green corrector-concealer with a brush or a sponge. “After corrector-concealer, apply a CC or BB cream, both of which offer various benefits as well as a hint of colour. Add a light film of foundation where extra coverage is needed,” advises Rinkel. Brush a flattering warm glow across your cheekbones, nose and forehead with a light dusting of bronzer. “If your skin is pale, a light gold or rosy-gold bronzer is most flattering. Dark skin tones look best in deeper, redbased bronze tones,” Rinkel notes. Flushed lips and cheeks add a bright, youthful look to the skin and are an important spring makeup trend. Rosy, berry, and peach-coloured all-inone lip and cheek stains are a recently issued product that can be applied to both cheeks and lips, or you can use cream or powder blush on the apples of your cheeks for a radiant appearance. Below: A brighter “balanced” look features sheer bright colour applied to the eyes and lips. Raspberry lips and cheeks play well off a vibrant wash of turquoise eye shadow. The model's cheek bones and orbital bone are given soft emphasis with shimmering highlighter powder. This more dramatic look is enhanced by eyebrows filled in with auburn powder to match the model's hair colour and strong black eye liner. Fantasy eye lashes complete the look.

Boldly coloured lips in shades of red, raspberry, pink and coral remain on trend, with orange receiving high-style status. “Orange is certainly one of this spring's most fashionable lip colours,” says Rinkel. “If you want to wear orange or other bright lip colours, but don't wish to wear them full strength, choose a sheer formula or blot opaque lip colours for a softer effect.” Add flattering texture and softness to lips by topping lip colour with a layer of lip gloss or petroleum jelly. “Use lip primer and line lips with a lip pencil or colourless lip liner to prevent lipstick from bleeding and smearing,” suggests Rinkel. In eye shadow, the gold standard rules in metallic shades such as champagne, gold and bronze. “Gold and reddish-toned bronze eye shadows really enhance blue eyes and offer a flattering way to update naturallooking eye makeup on other eye colours as well, but don't be afraid to have fun experimenting with makeup and spring's more vibrant colours,” Rinkel says. Other popular eye shadow colours include turquoise, blue, lilac and green. The practice of wearing soft lips with stronger eye makeup and vice versa still works, but a balanced approach that pairs sheer bright eye and lip colours is also fashionable. “Avoid wearing heavy black eyeliner, especially under the lower lash line, where it can really appear to drag the eye down and contribute to an aged look. Dark brown and brown-black eyeliner and mascara often looks most flattering,” Rinkel notes. Last but not least, don't forget to fill in your eyebrows if they're sparse. Full, natural-looking eyebrows inspired by the popular model Cara Delevingne are most current. “Don't over tweeze and if your brows are too sparse, fill them in with taupe brow powder on an angle brush for a natural look,” advises Rinkel.

TAKE AIM AT EXCESS INCHES FAT-REDUCING APPLICATIONS HELP TRIM PROBLEM AREAS By Heather Toskan If you long for a simple way to reduce fat and lose inches, there's an application aimed at achieving a trimmer look. “Our professional fat-reduction system consists of a series of natural, botanically based applications that we apply to areas where you wish to reduce fat cells and inches to achieve a trimmer appearance,” says Debra Hall, a staff nurse at Pro Health Medi-Clinic in St.Thomas. While exercise and diet can be effective in overall weight loss, fat-reducing applications take direct aim at resistant, fathoarding areas, such as bellies, thighs, backs, underarms and necklines. “A loss of inches and a trimmer look is achieved as the skin tightens and fat-cell toxins are naturally eliminated by the body,” says Hall, adding that these treatments are becoming increasingly popular with both men and women. A noticeable tightening effect and the loss of inches appear gradually throughout the process. Four treatments spaced 72 hours apart are required for optimal results. Hall points out that the loss of inches is not due to water loss. Clients are advised to drink plenty of water while undergoing treatment to aid in hydration and the proper elimination of toxins.

“The process is simple and painless. Book an appointment for an application to be applied to the target area and you're on your way in about 20 minutes. You can expect to feel a cooling sensation as you continue to wear the application for the next 72 hours, as the botanical ingredients continue to deliver fat-shrinking, skin-tightening benefits,” Hall says. After 72 hours, remove and discard the application and massage any residue left behind into your skin. Return to the clinic every four days, for a total of four applications over a two-week period.

MOCKINGBIRD ORIGINAL CREATIONS

FANCY DANCERS STRUT THEIR STUFF By Beth Stewart You may have seen Betty Nelson-Daniel's work at Artistix, a funky local gallery once located off Richmond Row. Alas, she's since flown the coop. Although her work can be found in most major cities in Ontario, and at a smattering of galleries across Canada and the U.S., London is sadly bereft of her fanciful figures. Nelson-Daniel, who now nests in Midland, Ontario, has had a passion for sculpting bird-based figures since she studied art at H.B. Beal Secondary School in the late 1960s. Top Right: Standard Mocking-Bird. Made with leather, beads and feathers. Centre Left: Thunderbird, feathers, fur, fish and shells. 9" tall. Centre Right: Organic Mocking-Bird. Made with beautiful birch bark, twigs, acorns, fall leaves, pine cone necklace, raffia, miniature flowers. Earth tones. 9" h. x 14" w. Newest creation of the Mocking-Bird figures. Below: This American Southwest bird has been created with a mixture of leather, beads, metal filigree, feathers and moose mane. All are original, one-of-a-kind pieces.

She began creating her Mocking-Birds in 1983 and had her first art show in 1985. In 1986, she was invited by the National Ballet of Canada to create figures that captured La Belle Epoque. This kicked off an avalanche of invitations from other organizations, including Stratford Festival, Boston Ballet, New York's American Folk Art Museum, and Cirque du Soleil. Like their Northern Mockingbird namesakes, Nelson-Daniel's Mocking-Birds are apt mimics. They pose as humans, often dancers, and reflect the artist's fascination with movement and theatrical aplomb. Each figure is carefully constructed from 14-gauge galvanized wire and sports a colourful conglomeration of materials – including feathers, fur, leather and beads – as clothing. Each is a one-of-a-kind piece. They are built from the ground up. Says Nelson-Daniel: “By starting at the feet, I can create the balance required to make them freestanding.” Each figure evolves as it is made. “I am so familiar with the character, I let my mood influence the design, and the materials at hand dictate the finished piece,” says Nelson-Daniel.

ARTISAN’S ALLEY

Above: Handmade, organic birch bark shoe with a tree house mounted on a sponge mushroom and reindeer moss.

When the pressure is on, the artist may produce up to three a day. She never uses an assistant. The ballet figures, which she refers to as “Standard Mocking-Birds,” are the most popular with collectors. “They have been described as dramatic, and spiritual sculptures that evoke a physical experience in some who view them,” the artist notes. Nelson-Daniel has produced a variety of other figures as well, including ones based on Egyptian gods and Japanese Kabuki players. The artist has sold work to numerous celebrities and their associates, as well as doll and art collectors, and has done custom work for corporations. Last summer, the vice president of Walt Disney Productions bought two of Nelson-Daniel's mockingbirds at Davis Canadian Arts in Stratford. Recent work includes earth-toned “Organic Mocking-Birds” created with bark, twigs, acorns and other materials found in her own garden. She has also branched out to construct organic containers and table-top-sized tree houses. The Organic Shoe uses a recycled shoe as its base. “I remove the heel, add a tree branch, cover the shoe inside and out with birch bark,” says NelsonDaniel. She then adorns it with other natural materials. “The Mocking-Birds have had many opportunities to evolve in all kinds of forms, purposes,” says Nelson-Daniel. “Each day is a new day of discovery for the Birds!”

STAN PORTLEY’S OFFERS DO-IT-YOURSELF ARTISTS TECHNIQUES TO BRIGHTEN UP THEIR HOMES By Ellen Ashton-Haiste Tye Dye and custom stencilling for furniture are just a couple of new techniques awaiting do-it-yourself artists at Stan Portley's – Timeless and Unique. The company, with locations in London and Port Stanley, is the region's exclusive retailer for the van Gogh Chalk Paint Collection, created by British Columbia artist Kathy van Gogh. The paint – comprised of water, pigment and chalk as the binder, with no toxic chemicals – gives a velvety finish to wood furnishings. It has been attracting fans and customers to Stan Portley's, says Bobbie Robinson, who operates the business with her husband, John. These new products and techniques are providing innovative artistry options for customers, she says. Tye Dye for Furniture is one such option. Robinson says the finished products really do have the look of the colourful T-shirts and clothing items with swirls and patterns of bold colour, popularized in the 1960s. “The process is a bit messier (than the regular chalk painting) and it takes a bit longer to dry, but it's definitely cool!” Stencils are another new offering. The store carries a full line of

the stencils, made in Ontario by Joanne Mudd at Muddaritaville Home Studio in Pefferlaw (northeast of Toronto). Mudd will custom design stencils for clients, as well. Stencils also allow three-dimensional detailing to be added to furnishings by using a spatula to spread van Gogh's Furniture Facelift, an embossing plaster, through the stencil. Another new product is the Furniture Frosting, which Robinson describes as a “layered coating of different colours that give the effect of an abalone shell or mother-of-pearl.” It hardens to a durable finish, she adds. The van Gogh Chalk Paint Collection has 26 standard colours, including a new opaque red called And Your Little Dog Too. Robinson says custom colours can be created by mixing the standard colours in various combinations. “We call it Mix This With That Technology and you can get hundreds of colours,” she says. Stan Portley's conducts classes and workshops, from introductory to advanced techniques. They also offer studio time, allowing customers to use their space and stencils. Above: The drawers on this dresser were given a threedimensional pattern using stencil and embossing plaster, then re-stencilled with a lighter-toned chalk paint. Left Top and Bottom: The table is chalk painted then stencilled with the Napoleonic Bee, produced by Muddaritaville Home Studio. Below: Kathy van Gogh, centre, founder of the van Gogh Chalk Paint Collection, is shown with Stan Portley's owners John and Bobbie Robinson.

BUSINESS PROFILE

MAKING LIFE EASIER FOR HOME CHEFS NEOLITH COUNTERS COMBINE SLEEK LINES WITH MINIMAL CARE

By Jill Ellis-Worthington Solid-surface countertops made from natural substances are both agelessly beautiful and hightech efficient. Offered exclusively in London by Coni-marble Manufacturing, Neolith is manufactured from all organic materials, so it doesn't emit any environmentally harmful substances. This green product is also fully recyclable. “This is a porcelain product, so it's made of natural ingredients,” says Deborah Clemens, general manager administration. A product that can withstand heat is a boon to the Coni-marble crew. “Other solid surfaces are heat resistant, but this one takes direct heat,” Clemens notes. That ease of care extends to upkeep as Neolith is impervious to chemicals, making it simple to clean. Food safety isn't a concern as Neolith is hygienic and non-absorbent. Neolith offers flexibility of design, as well. “With a thickness of only 10 millimeters, it presents a unique design perspective with a new look for contemporary design with sleek, clean lines,” Clemens says. Although the product is available in thicker profiles, its lean look appeals to the design sensibilities of modern families, she adds. Available in a variety of shades and textural finishes, Neolith appeals to those who want to take a modern approach to their kitchen design. The Iron line “resembles aged metal,” says Clemens, and it's available in six colours, while the Colorfeel

group offers 11 colours that will brighten up a contemporary design. The Timber line is Neolith's take on a wood finish and it's offered in four earthy tones. By comparison, the Textil line resembles a finely woven fabric and is available only in black or white. Coni-marble has carried the Neolith line for one year and it's been experiencing a growth in popularity, in large part due to its sleek, thin profile. “This is very big in Europe but trends take a while to make it here. It's grown (more popular) significantly over the past few months,” Clemens says. Some homeowners have been resistant to the product, preferring the more traditional appearance of natural stone countertops. Neolith answers by introducing the Classtone line, with its veined and mottled resemblance to stone products. Classtone won't be available in Canada for a few months, having made its recent debut to great acclaim at the KIBS (Kitchen and Bath) Show in Las Vegas. Coni-marble's showroom features a large island, “with a cooktop cut into it, so you can really see the product,” says Clemens, as well as colour and texture samples of all the lines that Neolith offers.

LUXURY RISING

TRICAR IS BUILDING ITS NEWEST CONDO RESIDENCE IN NORTH LONDON

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

Panoramic views will be a feature attraction for residents of VillageNorth, The Tricar Group's newest London condominium tower, now on the rise in the Sunningdale area. The 14-storey building, under construction on Sunningdale Road just west of Richmond Street, will offers vistas of the city to the south and forested natural areas, and the Sunningdale Golf and Country Club to the north. Walkways, gardens and large courtyards, featuring a selection of trees and shrubbery native to the region, will bring nature right to the building's doorstep. Amenities, including shopping, dining, entertainment and recreation venues are just steps away. A development for boutique shopping and an assortment of private shops and businesses is also planned. “Londoners want to live in this area,” says Adam Carapella, Tricar's vice president of operations. “We have already received a tremendous amount of positive feedback and have over 30 sales in just over three months.”

The tower's 153 condominiums, ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 square feet, feature a variety of floorplans and include one- and two-bedroom units with dens plus 15 two- and three-bedroom penthouse suites. All feature high ceilings, wide-plank laminate hardwood flooring, high-efficiency appliances, and electric fireplaces. Oversized balconies with tempered glass and aluminum railings maximize the views. The building also offers Club North, an 11,570-square-foot entertainment, recreation and fitness facility. “This is a first for us,” says Linda Pepe, manager of corporate administration with Tricar. The facility includes a fully equipped fitness centre with weight machines, an indoor pool, a yoga studio and a golf simulator. There is also a billiards room, a lounge, a theatre room, and a dining room with a full kitchen where residents can host special events or large family gatherings. “Londoners want to live in this area.” - Adam Carapella

VillageNorth purchasers will be among the first to take advantage of the company's new Tricar Condo Living Centre, a decor and presentation facility slated to open this spring in downtown London. There, residents can receive help with their colour selections and design features to match their new suite to their individual tastes. “For some people, the colour selection process is intimidating and overwhelming,” Carapella says. “Our state-of-theart centre was developed to take away stress and keep the process of purchasing your new home both positive and exciting.” The condos are priced from the mid$200s and purchasers can expect occupancy in the spring of 2015, Pepe says. An on-site presentation and sales centre is now open Saturday through Wednesday, from noon to 5 p.m.

At the end of a long, cold winter, thoughts of vibrant gardens, weekend barbecues and relaxing days spent on the patio seem little more than fleeting dreams. But, come April, when the Western Fair District Agriplex overflows with flowers, garden exhibits, indoor and outdoor decorating displays and the delectable scents of barbecued steak and hickory chips, those dreams will morph into reality. The 38th London Spring Home and Garden Show – with the

theme “Dream It, Design It, Build It, Three Steps to Home Happiness” – will be teeming with experts ready to help regional homeowners do just that, says show director Art Bacon. More than 300 exhibitors will have products and tips for home decorating, landscaping, gardening and renovations. Daily presentations on the Idea and Garden Stages will offer in-depth advice on those topics, including some from well-known celebrities.

• Paul Zammit, an in-demand speaker around the world and the Nancy Eaton Director of Horticulture at the Toronto Botanical Garden, will bring his love of horticulture to the Gardening Stage on April 11. Zammit's personal garden has received awards and has been featured in several gardening and lifestyle magazines. • Marc Atiyolil, editor-in-chief of the national Canadian Home Trends Magazine and author of the internationally syndicated newspaper column From Drab to Fab, will be on stage April 12. As host of the Marc Atiyolil Show and the new DIY Hotline, he is known for his down-to-earth approach to do-it-yourself projects. Atiyolil is certain to have a plethora of ideas to share. • Andrew Downward, from the HGTV and W Network's Divine Design program, which airs in 78 countries, will bring his expertise in paint and colour to the Idea Stage on April 13. Downward, also a

magazine columnist, is a sought-after speaker across North America. “My focus is on fun but I also want to empower,” Downward says. “More and more, people want to improve their homes themselves. At the end of my shows, I hope the audience has a real sense that they can paint, choose their own colours and add a dramatic faux finish to their space just by following a few simple steps.” Design and decor, indoors and out, are always a significant focus at the show. As kitchens increasingly take on a role as the heart of the home, exhibits such as the one planned by London's Motivo Interiors will inspire the imagination. The company is creating a 30-foot transitional kitchen – a blending of modern and traditional design. An oversized island will provide a central focus, while two three-by-11-foot walnut pantries will bookend the cabinetry along the perimeter of the workspace. “It's going to be gorgeous,” says Motivo founder/owner Andre Dos Reis.

The City of London will also be on hand with interactive displays showcasing everything from myth busting about energy-saving techniques to watershed maps displaying how too much spring fertilizer on lawns can make its way into environmentally fragile areas, says Greg Sandle, environmental programs co-ordinator for the city. “We always add new, neat items to our display and try to touch on fun and interactive things to explain to people the effect they have on the environment,” Sandle says. The London Horticultural Society Flower Show and Competition, a show staple for more than three decades, will be back with displays from London Master Gardeners, the Forest City Koi and Pond Club, Ontario Horticultural Association and the Garden Club of London. NEW MID-SIZE SEDAN BLENDS REFINED LUXURY, SPORTY PERFORMANCE

IMPRESSIVE DYNAMICS, SAFETY FEATURES HIGHLIGHT NEW WAGON

REDESIGNED SPORT IS FASTER, MORE AGILE AND FUEL EFFICIENT

The sporty prototype sedan that Acura unveiled at the recent Detroit auto show demonstrates the direction the automaker is heading with its completely new 2015 TLX performance luxury sedan, which arrives in dealers' showrooms this summer. The TLX blends refined luxury and athleticism in a premium mid-size model that tucks into Acura's sedan lineup between the compact ILX and the full-size RLX. The TLX is 9.65 centimetres shorter in length than the current TL sedan, but rides on the same 277.6-cm wheelbase. Despite the reduced length, Acura engineers have created an interior that rivals the spaciousness of the current TL. There's comfortable seating for five adults, ample cargo space and the open, airy greenhouse minimizes blind spots. Sporty performance will be provided by a choice of two advanced, fuel-efficient engines – a new 2.4-litre, 16-valve, four-cylinder featuring direct injection and Acura's i-VTEC variable valve timing or a 3.5-litre, single overhead camshaft V6, also with direct injection and i-VTEC plus fuel-saving variable cylinder management technology. The 2.4-litre four will be paired with a new eight-speed, dual-clutch transmission, while the V6 will be mated with a new nine-speed automatic featuring closely spaced gear ratios and a wide overall ratio range to enhance performance and fuel efficiency.

The 2015 Volvo V60 sports wagon continues the brand's commitment to safety, but this new model also features elegant styling, exciting performance and impressive handling. Although Volvo has a tradition of offering products that also place an emphasis on function and utility, the luxurious appointments in the spacious interior of this sports wagon reinforce the fact it is truly a premium vehicle. Safety features in the V60 include advanced software that extends Volvo's blind spot information system to include a lane change merge aid and cross traffic alert. Its City Safety system can now operate up to 50 km/h and its pedestrian detection system with auto brake technology can now identify cyclists. The V60 is available with a 2.0-litre Drive-E four-cylinder mated to an eightspeed gearbox driving the front wheels. The T5 version is turbocharged and generates 245 horsepower, while the T6 features a turbo and a supercharger combining to produce 302 horses. If you prefer all-wheel drive, powertrain choices include: the T5 with a 250-horsepower, 2.5-litre five-cylinder mated to a six-speed automatic transmission; the 3.0-litre inline six T6 putting out 300 horsepower, or the turbocharged, 3.0litre inline-six R-Design boasting 325 horsepower. The 2015 V60 is now in dealers' showrooms, with pricing starting at $39,800.

Land Rover's capabilities for tackling the toughest terrain are legendary and that legacy has been passed on to the all-new 2014 Range Rover Sport – it's all but unstoppable, regardless of the terrain, with complete composure in all conditions. Dramatic changes to this generation, however, have also made it faster, more agile and responsive than its predecessors. Its overall weight has been trimmed by 340 kilograms – a significant reduction that improves performance and handling response, while improving fuel efficiency up to 24 per cent. This reduced weight has been achieved through the use of a new lightweight suspension system and an aluminum unibody structure, replacing the former design that mounted the body on a heavy steel frame. The new suspension system delivers class-leading wheel travel, with 260 millimetres of movement at the front and 272 mm at the rear, providing exceptional wheel art-iculation. The fifth-generation, four-corner air suspension now offers variable ride height with up to 115 mm of regular movement, from the lowest setting to the standard off-road height. An automatic extension (triggered by sensors) and a manually selected extension both raise the Sport by 35 mm, increasing the total movement range. Pricing for this premium sporty SUV starts at $73,990. March/April 2014

The A8 is loaded with advanced technologies and safety features, its manners on the road are exceptional and it wraps its occupants in the exquisite amenities and comfort features one would expect in a premium German sedan. Under its precisely curved aluminum skin rests a sophisticated powertrain that propels this full-size sedan effortlessly. The heart of the A8 is a turbocharged 3.0litre V6 diesel engine with direct fuel injection and double overhead camshafts. The other feature that diesel fans appreciate is superior fuel economy – and the A8 doesn't disappoint: although it weighs 2,045 kilograms, it still delivers impressive fuel consumption ratings: 8.7-litres/100 km in the city and 5.3 on the highway. 2014 cadillac cts CADILLAC CHALLENGES WORLD’S BEST WITH ALL-NEW CTS SEDAN

Cadillac is taking aim at the mid-size luxury sedan market with its all-new 2014 CTS. In particular, segment-dominating brands such as MercedesBenz and BMW are in the crosshairs and Cadillac engineers have upped the ante by making this third-generation CTS longer, lower and leaner. To make the new CTS the lightest in its class, lightweight features such as aluminum doors have replaced the heavy steel units used on previous models. The result is a near-50/50 weight distribution to give the car better balance and handling. Not only is the 2014 CTS lighter overall than the previous model, but it also weighs 90 kilograms less than its rival BMW 528i. A 127-millimetre increase in overall length improves the CTS's exterior presence and it also results in a more spacious cabin. The wheelbase has been stretched 3.0 centimetres to

Two transmissions are offered: a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and electronically controlled overdrive or an eight-speed automatic, also with paddle shifters and electronic automatic overdrive. The quick-shifting eight-speed tranny, a first for Cadillac, delivers 1.5 per cent better fuel economy than a six-speed box. Rear-wheel drive or an all-wheel system is offered (except on the Vsport.) cruising the

mediterranean in

style By Ellen Brown

While researching cruise lines for an upcoming vacation, I had heard that Crystal was the best choice. My companion and I booked our Crystal cruise with high expectations and we weren't disappointed. Guests are treated like royalty – they are wined and dined, and pampered beyond belief. We sailed aboard Crystal Serenity in the Mediterranean. Ours was a port-intensive voyage, calling in many wonderful cities. And with three days at sea, there was time to relax and enjoy the ship's offerings, as well. My stateroom was very comfortable and featured a walk-in closet with an abundance of drawers, a Jacuzzi tub and glassed shower, a sofa, and a luxurious queen-sized bed. My butler provided pressing/shoe-shine services and brought canapes and champagne nightly at my request. Breakfast on my veranda was delivered within minutes and always with a smile. The stewardesses, waiters, servers, spa employees, concierge, front desk staff and even the librarian could not do enough for us – they greeted us consistently with warm welcomes. The cuisine was memorable during our 12 days aboard. It ranged from freshly squeezed juices every morning at breakfast

to the Bananas Foster that our head waiter prepared for us, table side, after dinner. I particularly appreciated the use of top-quality ingredients, as well as prime meats, perfectly seasoned sauces, freshly made pastas and soups, and desserts that were as beautiful as they were delicious. Sommeliers in all of the dining venues were knowledgeable, upbeat and added greatly to our overall dining experiences. Specialty restaurants Prego and Nobu's Silk Road served meals among the best I've enjoyed anywhere. The lime-and-ginger salt rub in the spa represented one of the most pleasurable hours I have ever spent. I booked the same treatment later that day for my companion and he agreed that it was fantastic. For those contemplating a cruise, I highly recommend Crystal. Although this was my first Crystal voyage, most passengers I met were on their second, 10th or 15th Crystal cruise. I understand why now and I can't wait to book another cruise. Someone recently asked me what I would change about our voyage if I could. It's been several months since I've sailed and I have yet to come up with an answer to that question.

CALSTAR BRICKS LONDON HOMES ARE BEING BUILT USING THE WORLD'S FIRST GREEN BRICK By Jill Ellis-Worthington

In a world where words such as “eco-friendly,” “sustainable” and “recyclable” are used in an effort to green-wash too many products, it's refreshing to learn of a construction material that's truly green. Even more surprising is that it's a green product that doesn't cost more than the conventional version. Ferrell Brick and Stone is London's exclusive supplier of CalStar bricks for residential construction. Instead of being made of clay and fired in a kiln for hours, CalStar bricks are made from one of the waste products from coal-fired power plants. It's called fly ash and it's the waste that is released from the coal as it burns. Environmental standards require this ash to be collected and now, instead of having the bags of ash fill landfill sites, it's used to make the world's first green brick. Each brick is manufactured using 37 per cent recycled material. Fly ash is mixed with water, sand, pigment, and a water repellant, then poured into moulds. These are dry packed and tamped down. The bricks are cured in a 200-degree, highhumidity oven. Maranda Bennett, Canadian market development manager, describes the process as “steamed to cure in a spalike environment.” This process saves 81 per cent of the energy used in making traditional bricks. Adds Bennett: “The way that

bricks are usually made is one of the highest contributors to greenhouse gases.” A U.S.-based company, CalStar began making inroads in Ontario in 2012. Ferrell Brick and Stone has carried the line since January of this year. Bennett says 10 million units have been manufactured in the Racine, Wisconsin plant and distributed through North America, calling it “phenomenal growth for a product that the consumer is hungry for.” CalStar will soon open a second plant in Mississippi and a third one is being scouted in Canada, with sites in Ontario and Quebec under consideration. Available in 23 colours, CalStar bricks are offered in a smooth texture, which Bennett describes as modern, and a tumbled finish that offers a more traditional appearance. Ferrell Brick and Stone carries just four of the colours, according to sales representative Ken Valstar: natural (platinum grey), prairie (light tan), autumn (reclaimed red brick) and redwood (shades of red). He sees the palette growing to 10 offerings as demand increases. CalStar bricks will soon make their area debut on model homes in two new developments: one in Ilderton (Marquis Developments) and London (Woodhaven Builders). March/April 2014

REDUCE YOUR WATER COSTS WITH

RAINWATER HARVESTING By Ellen Ashton-Haiste The availability of water in today's environment often seems to be a feast-or-famine scenario. News of drought in some parts of the world while floods devastate other regions has the public thinking more seriously about conservation, including the idea of harvesting rainwater, says Paul Rancourt, co-owner of London-based Tydan Landscape Design. Tydan, operated since 1998 by Rancourt with his wife, Anne Marie, and children Tyler and Danielle, is certified by Aquascape to install its RainXchange systems. The Illinois-based company's system collects rainwater through downspouts and permeable paved areas. The rainwater is stored in underground cisterns before being used in an irrigation system or pumped out with a hose for a variety of non-potable purposes. The system includes a water feature – a fountain, a waterfall, a bubbling rock or an oxygenator similar to those used in aquariums – that keeps the stored water circulating and aerated so it doesn't become stagnant. “We've had good interest from homeowners. (They) seem to be looking at it more and more,” Rancourt says. There are many ways homeowners can use the harvested water. These include watering lawns and gardens, washing cars, topping

up swimming pools or hot tubs. When the system is installed in a new home, the water can be plumbed into the house for laundry or flushing toilets and, with proper filtration, even bathing. The system also has farm applications for irrigation and watering livestock. The rainwater harvesting kits come in various sizes, starting at 500 gallons. Rancourt says homeowners should consider their requirements, based on the size of the property and the uses of the rainwater, as well as cost. The price ranges roughly from $6 to $8 per gallon, installed. However, it's more economical to install the system in a new home than to retrofit it to an existing property, which can be much more labour intensive, he says. Rancourt cites the advantages to harvesting rainwater. It can generate considerable savings for homeowners on municipal water bills – Aquascape claims this can amount to between 30 and 50 per cent. It can also divert run-off from farmlands and may prevent overloads on city sanitary systems. These overloads can result in chemicals, fertilizers and sewage flowing into nearby waterways. “So, it's not only saving money, it's also helping to save our environment.”

GRAND BEND & AREA

66 Lifestyle March/April 2014

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

OAKWOOD RESORT THIS VACATION DESTINATION IS A LAKE HURON LANDMARK Whether it's a summer day trip, a weekend getaway, a corporate event, or even a wedding, Grand Bend's Oakwood Resort has positioned itself as a one-stop destination. Since 1922, it's been a landmark on the Lake Huron shoreline and, in the last 30plus years, current owners Dave and Valerie Scatcherd have continued to improve on its offerings. The 2014 season is no exception. A new website, targeted for late March, will coincide with a rebranding of Dave's Clubhouse – the resort's casual dining restaurant – as Dave's Pub and Grill, with a new menu from executive chef Mark Graham. “The resort really has everything in one location,” says marketing manager Natalie Core. “And we find people are choosing to come here, rather than battle the traffic to (Muskoka).” Oakwood is known for its 18-hole, par-70 golf course. Its location on the

lakeshore, with a private beach, is also a major draw, Core says. But there's more to the resort's attractions. The pub is one of two onsite restaurants operated by chef Graham. The Oak Room, part of the original structure, features a logged interior and a fieldstone fireplace; it offers fine dining. The resort boasts a full-service spa plus a fitness facility and indoor saltwater pool, sauna and hot tubs. In addition to serving guests, fitness centre/pool memberships are available to local residents. The inn comprises 126 rooms, including suites and four separate cottages. With 10,000 square feet of conference and meeting space, Oakwood can accommodate groups of up to 300 people. There are additional recreational and entertainment options nearby, including Grand Bend's beaches and marinas, Pinery Provincial Park and live theatre at Huron Country Playhouse.

A home fit for a king doesn't always have to be a castle, but it can be made from one. By using shipments of antique doors, windows and boards from old mansions, castles and even ships, London's Veranda Real Wood Interiors has made it possible to use old-world style to complement your modern home. By using repurposed materials with a rich history, the store has tried to lessen the environmental impact those materials leave, while continuing to preserve the essence of days gone by. In an age of pressboard and self-assembled furniture, Veranda is making a statement about the lost art of craftsmanship and culture. For eight years, Veranda has been sourcing and creating vintage and industrial furniture and accents – from Indonesia, Mexico, India, Africa, Morocco and Thailand – ensuring that

those looking for a traditional flair in a mostly modern home market aren't left out. With a shop full of the swirling colours of eastern cultures and the strong lines of hardwoods such as teak, mahogany and rosewood, these one-of-a-kind pieces won't be readily found elsewhere. From the dining room to the bedroom, Veranda has an eco-friendly solution for every room. The wide selection of imported silks, tapestries and rugs comprise just a small portion of the huge home décor inventory. Handmade clay vases, carved wooden panels, oil paintings and masks fill the interior with vibrant splashes of colour that are eye-catching and whimsical. Arches and canopies guide customers on their tour of the store. From eclectic to conventional, if it's exceptional it will be found at Veranda.

LOVE EVERY INCH OF YOUR HOME

BEFORE

THE RENOVATION CHALLENGE Though large, the original kitchen lacked connectivity. Sightlines to the backyard were minimal and a wall blocked access to natural light from the living room.

THE CREATIVE SOLUTION Removing the load-bearing wall was accomplished with a new structural beam. The real challenge was breaking up the now 22’ x 28’ space to provide a sense of scale and increasing views to the backyard. Two flooring materials help distinguish the two areas while the new 8’ picture window provides the focal point in the kitchen and a dramatic fireplace anchors the living space.

DUO’s team became part of our family, since we had to live in our house during the renovation. We highly recommend DUO for a stress free project
