What a Braw success! Over 5,000 people came to Balmaha’s Braw Weekend in October. Two days of live music, food & drink and entertainment on the banks of Loch Lomond.

The weekend, organised by The Oak Tree Inn was a huge success and brought together some of Scotland’s finest food and drink producers to celebrate the year of food and drink. There was plenty to do, including children’s theatre, live music, food & drink tastings, cooking demonstrations, a craft fair and lots more.

Saturday night featured four excellent music acts including Dave Arcari and Have Mercy Las Vegas, the event even had its own beer – ‘Braw Brew’, produced exclusively for the festival by Fallen Brewery. St Mocha hosted a tea party to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland, with fun and games provided by the characters on St Mocha’s vintage bus. Charity fashion show success in Drymen!

The Buchanan Arms Hotel was once again the venue for the Moon of Drymen and Park Life charity fashion show on the 1st October. Canapés and glasses of fizz were served by the charming Buchanan Arms staff as two hundred ladies mingled and chatted while looking for a good seat for the show. Finally everybody was seated and Mairi from Moon of Drymen gave a brief introduction to the evening’s proceedings. Helen of The Leo Look then gave a short presentation - does your wardrobe need to be cleared out and edited for your lifestyle? Personal shopping for that special event? The ladies from Leo Look can help. An interesting innovation this year was the provision of a listing of the

outfits which proved a great memory prompt. The clothes as always from Moon were super, from wellies and hats for the horrid winter days to the glamorous evening looks and a host of wonderful accessories and costume jewellery. The models were all fabulous and enthusiastic with hair beautifully styled by Alison of Klassy Kuts of Drymen. The evening finished with a very successful raffle and auction. Competition was fierce but good natured for the star lot: Dinner, bed and breakfast at the glorious five star Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Edinburgh! Everyone had a great time and £1800 was raised. This year the beneficiary was Cancer Research UK.

Wayfarer’s Review Having heard on the grapevine of a change of ownership at the Wayfarers in Croftamie, my sister and I decided to go along for Sunday lunch and take her grandson Sam with us. There was an extensive menu for us to choose from and it did take us quite a while to decide! The staff were very patient and helpful and told us about the daily specials available. We finally decided on starters of spicy chicken goujons, mozzarella sticks and butternut squash

which were all delicious. For main course Sam opted for the cheeseburger – which he said was “fab” and “worth coming for”, my sister had the haddock and chips which she said was very tasty and I settled on the sausage, mash and onion gravy also very enjoyable. The portions were very hearty and we did not have space to sample the desserts that were on offer, instead we settled for coffees. We would certainly recommend a visit.

A Curry for Christmas! Yasmin and her Family celebrate Christmas with a difference.

Christmas Day in our house is very traditional, a bird with all the trimmings. A tradition we have started ourselves, though, is the Christmas Eve Curry we are all excited about the next day and usually still busy wrapping presents, so dinner has to be something really easy and simple. Pawn curry is perfect, everyone just helps themselves. It’s an aromatic, spicy contrast to the following day and we love it.

Christmas Eve Prawn Curry 300g North Atlantic prawns, peeled 1 large onion, halved & sliced 1 clove of garlic, crushed 2 tsp grated fresh ginger 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 medium tomato, chopped ½ tsp ground cumin ½ tsp ground coriander ½ tsp chilli powder or to taste ¾ tsp garam masala ¼ tsp turmeric Salt to taste

Soften the onion, garlic and ginger in the oil for a few minutes in a large, wide based saucepan. Add the tomato and cook for two more minutes. Now add the cumin, coriander, turmeric, chilli and garam masala and fry on a high heat until the tomato breaks down and start to soften. Add the prawns and fry on a high heat until they start to release their juices. Carry on cooking over a high heat until the excess liquid evaporates and you are left with a thick sauce. The prawns will have shrunk considerably and have a slightly chewy texture and the curry will have an intense flavour. Taste for seasoning and serve with lots of naan bread for a truly delicious but informal meal.

Gardening Tips in December December is not our most extreme weather month and one can expect a fair amount of clear frosty mornings and plenty of sunny days. With the light fading so fast - this is the month for getting up early and stuck into any chores that havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been finished in the garden. Below are some of the things you could be getting on with:

Preparation Now the new seed catalogues are out for next spring, it is the best time to sit down with a cup of tea and decide what you want to grow next year. Order it as soon as possible before supplies are depleted.

Pruning This is the best month to do any major pruning on ornamental trees and shrubs. Prune bush roses back by half or so to stop them being damaged in the wind.

Planting This is a good time of year to plant bare root shrubs and trees while the ground is warm.

Clean paths of algae, repair fences & sheds This is the best time to spray fruit trees and roses with a recommended tar oil winter wash to kill off any blackspot spores on the plants or in the soil.

Clean away any damaged or diseased material in and around shrubs and trees. Mulch around all fruit trees and shrubs that have been pruned. When tidying up the garden, leave a pile of wood, and leaves in a corner providing somewhere for any hibernating insects or little animals. Always check for animals before clearing anything in the garden.

Ladies’ Lunch Was Magic for Cancer Research

125 ladies gathered at Culcreuch Castle, Fintry on Sunday 4th October for the second annual ladies’ lunch run by CRUK Strathendrick Local Committee. The event raised a grand total of £3101.50 …. exceeding last year’s fantastic figure of £2,934. This year’s entertainment was provided by magician and illusionist, Ryan Davidson, who entertained with close up

magic before the excellent lunch and followed it with a floor show of mind reading which left the ladies gasping in wonder and amazement. The event closed with a well supported raffle and thanks go to all the local businesses for their kind support and donations as well as to the ladies present for their generous and enthusiastic participation!

This tree has fairly slim branches, which are easy to decorate and the needles are relatively soft, not prickly. It is usually quite a deep shade of green.

This tree tends to be slightly cheaper than other varieties as the needles will drop more easily. Keep well-watered to help keep shedding to a minimum.

Great shape with stout branches for heavy decorations and excellent needle retention. Like the Scots pine this tree will hold it’s needles till way after Christmas. A very pleasant smell best described as a spicy orange.

This lovely bushy tree retains its needles very well and, with its upwards-pointing branches, decorations are in no danger of sliding off.

“Ms Bannerman has been instrumental in the implementation of a range of enhancements to academic standards and the rounded offering we have at Beaconhurst. Since being appointed depute head, Ms Bannerman’s focus has been on raising academic standards at the school which recently celebrated its best Higher results ever. She has concentrated on introducing new academic initiatives which helped secure Beaconhurst’s unprecedented 20% increase in Higher awards this August with a total of 93% of pupils gaining A-C grades. Ms Bannerman is keen to build on the school’s academic success and also plans to continue to develop an Expressive Arts pathway at Beaconhurst similar to that already in place for Sport. Walking in a Winter Woodland! In early 2015 the woodland at North Ballochruin Farm had some new residents - the Woodlanders! Three clans have come so far Pine, Fir and Spruce and we are happy to say they are settling in well. Since their arrival, farmer Ken Hendry thought they would be the perfect way to teach children about nature and woodland life. The first story in the series is called Peter Pine’s Woodland Walk and is written by Ken’s daughter Sarah. One morning Peter wakes up early and decides to go for a walk. On his way he thinks about how wonderful it would be to be a bird and fly in the sky and he meets several woodland creatures and learns more about the life of a bird. It will be available for purchase shortly at the farm shop and later online through our website. The book is aimed at younger children and features beautiful illustrations by artist Ciaran Murphy, it is hoped that a series aimed at older children will be released in the next couple of years. The farm is extremely busy at the moment due to the inaugural woodland lights show – Alive and the return of our special guest – Santa at Santa’s Woodland Experience. Both experiences offer a chance to see the woodlanders in their natural habitat. Balfron High Polytunnel Grand Opening Pupils, parents and staff joined with local businesses, charities and supporting agencies to celebrate the official, grand opening of Balfron High School’s polytunnel. There was a real party atmosphere as guests enjoyed the Indian summer weather. They were able to see a wide range of produce and also sample freshly pressed apple juice, courtesy of Stirling’s Low Carbon Future and Grow Forth (Forth Environment Link). The pupils provided an excellent buffet made with a selection of locally sourced and home grown tomatoes, basil from the polytunnel and homemade scones and jam tarts which they made in Home Economics. The polytunnel was officially opened by Amanda Quinn of Stirling Low Carbon Future, assisted by senior pupils Aaron Alsiran and Richard Jack. A grant from Education Scotland’s “Access to Education” Fund

secured the purchase of the 40ft polytunnel last April. Robyn Horsburgh, Scott Burr and Louise Oswald have been busy growing plants that they use in Home Economics. They are part of a new, pilot course, ConneXions, which includes Plant Biology, Practical Technology, Home Economics and Horticulture. The students connect what they grow with what they eat; what they eat with how it grows; how it grows with when it grows: when it grows with where it grows and by forming connections with local food produces. This way they learn about seasonality, food miles and sustainability. The young people also learn about the value of re-using materials as they have been assisted in making raised beds by recycling wooden pallets with the expert assistance of Stirling Low Carbon Future’s

upcycling group. There are exciting plans for future developments as the pupils plan for the school’s Christmas Fair on 11th December. They will be busy planting hyacinth bulbs for sale and garlic for early cropping. They have been successful in applying for rocket seeds which are at present orbiting Earth and looking forward to being involved in the Royal Horticultural Society project to investigate the effects of zero gravity on germination when the seeds come back to Earth. This is the just the start of many exciting things to come. Watch this space!

Outdoor Learning at Lomond School

Set in Helensburgh, within five miles of Loch Lomond and on the banks of the River Clyde, Lomond School has always maintained a passion and enthusiasm for outdoor learning and outdoor education. However, in the past year this passion has become a key focal point of the school’s strategic development plan and 2014/15 saw the introduction of Curriculum Sailing in the Junior School and Forest School teaching for all pupils in the Nursery and Junior School. This year, the School created a new position of ‘Head of Adventure and Service’. Miss Caroline Beveridge took up the post in August and is tasked with coordinating and leading the development of outdoor learning, outdoor education and voluntary service activities from Nursery through to S6.

From Hill Running and Skiing club to Archery and Young Explorers group, there is a wide range of extracurricular activities to get involved in and participation is supported and encouraged throughout the School. This year, figures released by Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) showed Lomond School to be the leading Independent School in Scotland for supporting pupils through the award scheme. In 2015/16, DofE continues to go from strength to strength with half of S6 pupils having completed their Gold Expedition developing their confidence, resilience, skills as well as giving back to their community through voluntary service.

Johanna Urquhart, Principal said: “Outdoor learning and education are given significant emphasis at Lomond School as we believe they are key to developing a wide range of skills and abilities not readily

found in the classroom. There is also a growing body of research that suggests that outdoor learning plays a significant role in raising pupils’ academic attainment as well. Growing up in the National Park, I have my own personal experience and passion for the outdoors and, throughout my teaching career, I have been privileged to see young people grow in confidence and improve their social and personal skills through taking part in outdoor activities which challenge and develop them. I believe passionately in the importance of this aspect of our curriculum.” Lomond School welcomes prospective families to visit throughout the year.
