Park Life Interview

with Finn Millard from TD Tree & Land Services Ltd Tree surgery looks like a dangerous business! Tree surgery is one of the most dangerous jobs out there if not done by the professionals. Not only can you do yourself some serious harm (just in January Ryder Cup golfer Jamie Donaldson severed a finger in a chainsaw accident) but if you don’t know what you’re doing you can also irreversibly damage your tree. Good tree surgeons can really improve the look and light in your garden by improving the shape of your trees, pruning deadwood and loose limbs, reducing hedge heights or simply removing unwanted or unhealthy varieties.

How long has your business been going and when did you expand? Our family-run company was already well established in the Scottish Borders when we decided to employ a team based in Doune. I set up that team in 2012 and over the years we have developed a strong reputation for quality workmanship, with many repeat customers. Our friendly squad provides a range of arboricultural services, from tree reports (for planning permission or for safety reasons) and all types of tree work right through to stump grinding and site clearance. As well as domestic clients we have also worked for Stirling Council, Forestry Commission Scotland and Moray Estates. My team has many years experience, and many practical qualifications that enable us to work safely and professionally. Unlike some rogue operators we’re also comprehensively insured. What’s important for us though is to take pride in our work – and enjoy it! What kid wouldn’t want to climb trees for a living.

Professional Tree Surgeons • Tree Removals • Tree Pruning • Hedge Cutting • Stump Removal • Tree Surveys • Logs Our qualified, insured and experienced team is based in Doune, specialising in all aspects of tree surgery and arboriculture. Call or email Finn Millard for a free, no obligation quote.

MODERN METALLICS

Park LoveLife s!

The breakout star of 2016 is going to be metallics, and - given their ability to instantly bring a sophisticated and glamorous touch to any space - it’s not hard to see why. Whether adding a sleek touch with silver or chrome or warming a room with gold, rose gold or copper, every school of design can benefit from this trend. One key difference that sets this year’s take apart from previous metallic trends is the flexibility to mix and match. Don’t hesitate to use one type of metal as the focal point of the space while working in a different type for a smaller accent role.

BOLD BLUES

Every year has its own color trends, and 2016 is no exception. Bold blues such as cobalt, navy and royal blue are the hues to use for the upcoming year. Fortunately, there is no shortage of ways to incorporate this shade into your interiors. It all depends on how impactful you want the color to be. For those looking to create a truly intimate and relaxing atmosphere, consider giving your walls a new coat of blue paint or bringing some brightness to your kitchen cabinets. You don’t have to go all out, however. Adding a pop of blue through a statement piece of furniture or accent piece is a great way to stay current without making a major commitment.

tel: 01877 382994 mobile: 07796 002001 www.microcroft.co.uk Computer Support for Home & Small Businesses in and around the National Park

Microcroft is a computer support and repair company based in and around the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park, covering north Glasgow, western Stirlingshire and southern Perthshire. Started in 2005 by Graham Flett, with the aim to provide friendly jargon-free support to small to medium sized businesses and home users, Microcroft has grown by word-of-mouth recommendations for great service and fair pricing. Graham is an experienced computer engineer, coming from the commercial sector in Glasgow where he worked as an IT manager, dealing with a 500 seat network and advanced telephony systems. “Originally coming from a rural background, I saw a gap in the market for IT support in some of the more far flung areas, where the big city companies didn’t provide a competitive service. There are more people working from home and starting their own businesses in the rural areas of the country, and since broadband, don’t have to be in the main centres to compete. These are the people I primarily support, but as it turns out, there seems to be no shortage of folk getting in to a jam with their computers!” “Working in the sticks you have to be willing and able to troubleshoot all types of problems. I’ve found myself naturally expanding my range of expertise to include things like mobile phones, websites, smart TVs and satellite systems on top of the usual computers, laptops, screen repairs and networking. It all adds to the diversity of the job, which keeps it interesting, and of course keeps me busy!”

Sixty-year-old woman seeks toy boys...

By Joanne Simms

Good grief! What is this magazine coming to, if it can print a headline like that? Well, now I’ve got your attention, let me explain why I’m on the prowl for men aged 16 to 30-years-old. Relax, I’m no cougar. I’m about to hit 60 and on the plus side I get a bus pass; I can go and interfere in the lives of my children and grandchild first-hand more often and not just annoy the hell out of them on the phone. On the downside I have to leave the potential donor register at Anthony Nolan the charity which has saved so many people with blood cancer. For all kinds of health reasons once you hit 60 you can no longer be a blood stem cell donor. Henny Braund, the chief executive at

Anthony Nolan, has just sent me a letter thanking me for my support over the years and asked: ‘Are you able to replace yourself?’

More importantly, and forgive the pun, can I help to inject some new, young, blood. Henny said: ‘We urgently need more young men aged 16-30 as they are more likely to be chosen to donate but currently account for just 12 per

cent of donors on our register.’ One of the best and most exciting things that happened to me was the arrival of a letter saying I was a possible match. I was just an ordinary woman when I bent down to pick that Anthony Nolan letter up off the doormat. Once I’d opened it I was a would-be lifesaver bringing hope to a frightened family, because no one has cancer on their own. I went through the second, more thorough, compatibility test and sadly I was not a good enough match. I had a palpable sense of disappointment. I would love to think that someone I helped to recruit was a perfect match, to go the distance and save a life. So come on guys, how about it? To enrol, visit: www.anthonynolan.org/register

REVIEW...

The Dungeon Diner at Culcreuch Castle Hotel In the beautiful Culcreuth Castle Hotel, the Dungeon Diner & bar offers an attractive & atmospheric setting. A wedding party was gathering in the bar as we arrived but we were led straight through to our table and service was prompt & very friendly. After ordering drinks, we were given the menus which offered a wide variety of options along with the choices on the daily specials board. We chose Goats cheese & beetroot starter, which was light & subtle, and the mussel & leek chowder which, apart from tasting great, had a generous serving of mussels.

Main courses were a chicken breast, haggis strudel, saute potatoes and Drambuie sauce (unusual but perfectly balanced dish) and a more traditional Scotch Beef burger with relishes, brioche bun with very moreish hand cut chips. We finished off with a banoffee crumble and, from the specials board, a raspberry swiss roll with cherries, which we fought over; can’t remember having a better dessert. Great setting, lovely atmosphere, friendly & knowledgeable staff and beautiful food at a very reasonable price. We’ll be back! Reviewed by Murray & Kate

Park Life’s delicious Lemonade Layer Cake for Spring! Ingredients CAKE: 1 1/3 cups granulated sugar 6 tablespoons butter, softened 1 tablespoon grated lemon rind 3 tablespoons thawed lemonade concentrate 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 large eggs 2 large egg whites 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 1/4 cups fat-free buttermilk Cooking spray FROSTING: 2 tablespoons butter, softened 2 teaspoons grated lemon rind 2 teaspoons thawed lemonade concentrate 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 8 ounces 1/3-less-fat cream cheese 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Preparation Preheat oven to 350°. To prepare cake, place first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium speed until well blended (about 5 minutes). Add eggs and egg whites, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda; stir well with a whisk. Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately to sugar mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture; beat well after each addition. Pour batter into 2 (9-inch) round cake pans coated with cooking spray; sharply tap pans once on counter to remove air bubbles. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes on a wire rack; remove from pans. Cool completely on wire rack. To prepare frosting, place 2 tablespoons butter and the next 4 ingredients (2 tablespoons butter through cream cheese) in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at high speed until fluffy. Add powdered sugar, and beat at low speed just until blended (do not overbeat). Chill 1 hour. Place 1 cake layer on a plate; spread with 1/2 cup frosting. Top with remaining cake layer. Spread remaining frosting over top and sides of cake. Store cake loosely covered in the refrigerator. Enjoy!

The Old Mill - a Charming Village Pub

The pub area of this charming 18th Century steading (which underwent an extensive renovation in January 2016) has a cosy, but modern feel with an open fire, board games and shelves of recipe books for those not so lovely Scottish days. It’s a relaxing area perfect for enjoying a drink and a chat. At night the pub has a lively and fun atmosphere with regular appearances from bands and local musicians, comedy acts and a monthly Sunday night quiz! We boast an extensive range of Scottish and British gins, bourbon, rye, and vodka, and of course a great selection of Scottish single malts. As well as having a large selection off premium lagers and ciders, we also serve guest ales from local brewers including the Houston Brewery, Fallen Brewery, the Loch Lomond Brewery and many more and on tap we always have Black Isle Blonde, Twisted Thistle and Guinness. Our wine list offers an extensive mix of grapes from all over the world! We have a large selection of loose leaf teas and all our staff are barista trained by Brodies of Edinburgh coffee.

How many of us fuel our day with coffee and biscuits? No time to sit and eat lunch or breakfast? We may keep going, but we’re doing nothing for our long term energy levels or our waist lines.

Some easy changes to make: • Add ground nuts or seeds to porridge • Granola or muesli with added nuts, natural yogurt & fruit • Have an egg on wholegrain toast • Peanut butter on wholegrain toast, add half a mashed banana Our traditional choices of cereals or toast and jam will give us an instant hit of sugar, raising our blood sugar and insulin levels. Our body soon processes this, turning excess sugar into fat, and dropping our blood sugar levels too low. With a dip in sugar levels our energy and concentration also dips and does nothing for our ability to focus on our daily work. It is not about changing everything completely, but small, achievable changes can make a huge difference to how we feel.

Fairy Homes carved out of wood, Aberfoyle in honour of a local Legend. Another great day out with for the kids within the Park Life area According to folklore the Rev William Kirk claimed to have spotted fairies in the woods in the 1600s. The new wood carvings are sited along a popular family walking route, starting point Aberfoyle Car Park for Doon Hill & Fairy Knowe walk. The unusual sight is part of a wider project being run in woodlands around the Stirling area in conjunction with Loch Lomond and Trossachs Countryside Trust, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Forestry Commission Scotland. Nicole Paterson, Stirling Council’s senior manager of environment, said: “It’s been fantastic to work so closely with a range of other organisations to make this happen and we certainly hope that people will enjoy this something extra on what is already a pretty popular trail.

“It’s part of a wider programme of work that has been going on to increase interest in all our woodlands, increase visitor numbers and hopefully provide a boost for local businesses as well. “We recently completed a number of spectacular new carvings on the Back Walk under Stirling Castle and new sculptures have also been created in rural woodlands - with others to come in Strathyre, Callander, Killearn and Balmaha. “All of the new carvings and sculptures are created using dead wood from the woods themselves and are unique to each area and tied to specific local heritage themes.”

Drymen Show will be held on Saturday 28th May at the Showfield, Drymen Bridge, Drymen.

2016 is the 200th year of Strathendrick Agricultural Society, which hosts the show. It formed in 1816 when James 3rd Duke Of Montrose instituted the Society from a Farmer’s Club which met in the Buchanan Arms to improve the breed of their livestock. Since then the President of the Society has always been the Duke Of Montrose and we welcome His Grace again this year to present our agricultural champions their Trophies. Along with our usual agricultural and light horse classes, which this year sees an all female panel of

judges, we are delighted to host a range of other attractions many of which are supported by our local communities and include; our Rural Tent, which also hosts our Bake Off competition, Schools Tent, 5-A-Side School’s Football Competition, Craft Tent and a particular favourite with all the children our Rabbit and Pet’s Tent. We also have a fantastic collection of Vintage Tractors and Trade Stands, while other entertainment comes from local live bands, the Fun Fair and our Main Ring attractions ,which this year include amongst other things Pig Racing courtesy of Craigievern Poultry.

Mother & Child Rights are not given much importance in certain societies.

WIN 2 KIDS PLACES! On the Nick Nairn Cook School’s ‘Kids Can Cook Curry’ Class on April 13th

In Malawi and other poverty stricken countries, and sometimes in ours, this observation is more obvious. Such shortfalls need to be corrected, by increased capacity for Education and Health of women and schoolgirls. Changing culture requires the educated in societies to be strengthened so that health is improved for mothers to have significant reduced mortality in pregnancy, which is needlessly high in Malawi, and greatly improved babies health. Sexual and Reproductive Health with Rights Education is the ambition of the young people themselves and other enlightened people whom we have met. Progress is being made but very slowly and will improve with international partnerships.

Additional developments are a) water harvesting for vegetable growing at schools to improve understanding of nutrition & nutrients. b) provision of a power source through solar panels for cooking c) mobile phones for improved communications for health access and transport. These require partnerships among midwives, teachers and a local charity for education. We have links with the Malawi-Scotland Partnership, schools, university staff and graduates in Malawi and Scotland. Local supporters and donors will be welcomed and badly needed. Life Changing Approach to Dyslexia: Hannah’s Story Fiona Macdiarmid, who runs Stirling’s Cellfield Centre, recently welcomed back former client, Hannah (20) who she first met 4 years ago. Hannah was struggling to cope with studying for her Highers and her self esteem was very low. Following consultation with Fiona, Hannah discovered she was dyslexic and undertook the Cellfield programme. A multisensory computer based programme, Cellfield was introduced to the UK 7 years ago by Fiona, who also runs the successful Kip McGrath tuition centre in Stirling. Undertaken over 10 days, Cellfield neurostimulates the brain networks which process the visual and auditory aspects of reading to achieve sustainable improvement in reading and language processing. Cellfield is very effective in helping people overcome dyslexia and similar processing difficulties and average gains of 2 years in reading age can be achieved. In addition to gains in reading, Cellfield also can be life changing because of the overall positive impact on self belief and confidence. Hannah is at University now and believes Cellfield changed her life: “it had a huge impact on me. It made a big difference to my academic studies and my day to day life”. IT’S TEN OUT OF TEN FOR MULBERRY BUSH MONTESSORI BALFRON 10K Organisers are hoping for a perfect ten when the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k marks a decade of successful races in April. Having grown from a small village event to one of the most popular fixtures on the national running calendar, the race will be celebrating its landmark year on Sunday, April 24. Over the past ten years the Balfron 10k has become one of Scotland’s favourite events with around 600-plus runners tackling the challenging course in the shadow of the Campsie Hills Appealing to both the serious runner as well as the weekend runner and first-time 10k-er, the event’s popularity has seen it consistently appear in the top rank of Runner’s World magazine’s league table. And the runners’ pain has seen others gain – in the past ten years the event has raised more than £60,000, with the funds being split between Balfron Primary School, Balfron High School and nominated charities. This year the Stirling-based mental health charity Action in Mind will be a beneficiary as amongst its many services, it offers counselling support to pupils at Balfron High School. And Mairi Clark, owner of Mulberry Bush Montessori, main sponsor of the event, added: “Mulberry Bush Montessori is tickled pink and as proud as ever to be the main sponsor of this prestigious event in the running calendar, which attracts entrants from both the local area and as far away as Bournemouth and Barra.’’ The race, which starts at Balfron Campus at 11am, follows a scenic out and back route. A chip timing device ensures a quick and accurate result for runners. Enter online now at the website www.balfron10k.org.uk www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Bush Montessori, every runner that crosses the 10k finish

At 11am the starter’s klaxon will sound on Killearn’s Main Street marking the start of the 2016 Killearn 10k. This annual event will have 250 places for runners and all of these are expected to sell out well in advance of the race date.

10k runners will register in Killearn Primary School before mustering in the park. Following in the footprints of previous successful Killearn 10k events, runners head out of the village on Main Street and up to the pipe track. When on the track they head to Glengyone Distillery and beyond to the turnpoint. Weather permitting, the picturesque route back into Killearn gives runners a fine view of the Arrochar Alps and Ben Lomond.

The 10k is not the only exciting event on 4th June. The Primary Fundraising Group will be hosting a family fun day to coincide with the 10k. And, of course, the day wouldn’t be the anticipated annual event without the Killearn Beer Festival, which will hydrate runners and spectators alike well into the evening! Yasmin McDonagh of Scotia Spice cooks live on STV! The owner of a small but growing Punjabi cookery business based in Balfron made her debut on television in February.

Yasmin was invited to cook on the ‘tea for a tenner’ slot on STV’s popular daily magazine show ‘Live at Five’ which features a chef making an affordable dish live on the show for the presenters and guests to enjoy.

Punjabi curry kits and cookery school

Yasmin learnt authentic Punjabi cooking as a young child and decided to turn her passion into a business as her own family grew up. Today Scotia Spice is a small food business based in Balfron combining a cook school where Yasmin teaches Punjabi cookery courses, with an online business selling her beautifully designed curry kits. Yasmin says, ‘’I was so pleased to be invited. It’s not every day that a business like ours gets to showcase itself on the television. “I’d never been on live TV before so I was nervous and excited in equal measures, I was just hoping not to drop anything and that they would love my food. The team at STV were so kind, professional and relaxed they really put me at my ease and the whole experience was great fun!’’

Yasmin cooked one of her favourite recipes from her Lamb kit using classic Punjabi spices. ‘’Lamb Keema makes a great, affordable mid-week supper. It’s full of flavour and spice as well as being quick and easy to make. It’s really tasty, and I was delighted the presenters and guests loved it too.’ www.scotiaspice.co.uk
