Guidance from Godalming College

Royal School leads the right way

Godalming College is opening its doors for young people and their parents, who are considering the College for entry in September 2014, on 10 July from 4pm – 8.30pm. All teaching staff will be on hand to discuss courses and current students and senior managers will be available to discuss life at college, enrichment, the tutorial programme and transport. Specialists such as learning support tutors and careers advisers will also be available to offer valuable individual advice and guidance. This year Godalming College were pleased to receive an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted report in all areas, as well as consistently high exam results, both for academic and vocational courses, with over 36% of students gaining an A* or A grade in their A levels last year and 66% of BTEC level 3 students gaining a Distinction* or Distinction.

Royal School pupil, Isabel Watkins recently came runner up in a Young Human Rights competition. Sponsored by The Guardian News, SecEd and Amnesty International, there were three categories where young people were encouraged to either write an article about a human rights issue, become a photojournalist and create a visual image of a human rights concern or write a protest song. Over 2500 people from the ages of 7 -18 took part from all over the country. As part of the competition Isabel visited the Guardian News offices and created the front page of a newspaper with her photo on it. Isabel then went on to the Amnesty International offices where the awards ceremony was held. Alice Reynolds from The Royal School, a winner from last year, was also asked to present an award.

An education in energy efficiency Highfield and Brookham Schools have recently invested in Biomass energy with a woodchip burning heating system. The new sustainable system was introduced to utilise the woodland on the school’s estate to produce energy and heat the school. “Before the new installation, the schools consumed an astounding 140,000 litres of oil a year. With the installation of the new woodchip burner, we are making an instant saving on oil consumption, which can now be re-invested in many other areas of the schools” says Paul Harris, Estate & Facilities Manager. “In addition we are also able to benefit from the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme which encourages the installation of renewable heat technology with financial incentives.” The woodchip burning heating system is considered to be carbon neutral as trees take carbon out of the atmosphere as they grow, which is replaced in the atmosphere as they are burnt, so there is no increase in atmospheric Co2 levels. The system is sustainable as the woodchip used for burning is derived from Chestnut coppicing on the Highfield and Brookham estate. Highfield and Brookham Schools, 01428 728000 34
