A CLOSE SHAVE

It all started off as a joke in school. Jamie is a language teacher at a local secondary school and he told the children that England wouldn’t win the Euros and that if they did, he would shave all his hair off. As England climbed the ranks, Jamie began to sweat! On the day he discovered England had reached the finals, he felt like he couldn’t let the children down, as England had done so well to get so far. But he wanted the hair shave to have more meaning, so decided to ask people for donations so he could raise money for The Primrose Centre – a local breast cancer charity that helped (and continues to help) his wife, Lauretta. Jamie raised over £300 and is delighted with the response and support. He’s also pleased that he decided to do the shave while the weather is warm! Have you heard of Brightwater Memorial Park? Located in Old Hill, it offers a modern alternative to in-ground burial or cremation by offering the UK’s only indoor, above-ground burial, together with a bespoke personal service. Life In Magazines visited recently and were impressed by the stunning mausoleum, private lounge and manicured gardens where loved ones can pay their respects - in comfort and in peace. Passed with flying colours…

ConnectME offered a computer skills project to residents of Orpington a few months ago. Run by PotentialME CIC and funded by Clarion Housing, it offered new skills to those who had little or no experience and wanted to learn how to use their digital devices to reduce social isolation and combat loneliness. Life In Magazines met with Fiona Hall, the project lead, to attend the certification presentation, which was held at Orpington Sea Cadets recently. A huge congratulations to all the ConnectMe learners for their achievements so far!

HEAD’S UP!

Did you know…The English Youth Ballet (EYB) presents full length productions of classical ballets starring professional principal dancers to sell-out audiences across the UK. The EYB was set up in 1998 by Janet Lewis MBE. Janet was born in Kent and lives in Orpington. After a distinguished career as a dancer with the Royal Ballet and London Festival Ballet, Janet co-founded her own ballet company in 1984. The Lewis London Ballet toured throughout the UK for ten years. Janet has directed, staged, produced and choreographed over 50 ballets since 1980. She set up EYB to give young dancers outside London an opportunity to perform classical ballet within a professional setting. This has proved so successful that English Youth Ballet currently stage up to nine productions a year throughout the regions of the UK. See www.englishyouthballet.co.uk EYB is presenting its electrifying production of Swan Lake at The Churchill Theatre Bromley on Sat 28 & Sun 29 August 2021. For tickets visit churchilltheatre.co.uk More than 250 school children across three schools in Orpington have taken part in a celebratory ‘booknic’event organised by Nugent Shopping Park in partnership with the National Literacy Trust. The event involved children enjoying a picnic and a book while also taking part in a range of fun reading-themed activities. Schoolchildren from St Mary Cray Primary Academy, St Paul's Cray Church of England Primary School and Harris Primary Academy Orpington took part in the event, with each child also able to take a book of their choice home. Research from the National Literacy Trust shows that children who own their own books are six times more likely to read above the level expected for their age and three times more likely to enjoy reading.

HEAR Today exhibition

Originally intended to be held in May last year and cancelled due to Covid, the HEAR TODAY exhibition has been rescheduled for Saturday 18th September. The exhibition focuses on technology and services designed to make life easier for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and will be held in the newly refurbished Orpington Methodist Church, 19 Sevenoaks Rd, BR6 9JH. Admission is free and exhibitors will include national charities such as Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and local charities such as Bromley Chain. Manufacturers and vendors of hearing aids and other devices will also be represented. The exhibition is being promoted by Deaf - not stupid, the Facebook page for people who are deaf and hard of hearing which is the brainchild of local man, Steve Cotterell and has almost 7,000 followers internationally. Steve, a retired technical journalist, says “I realised that there was nowhere for people who are deaf or hard of hearing to go to read unbiased reviews of the equipment and services that they need. This inspired me to create the Deaf - not stupid Facebook page and archive website, on which people can read reviews that I have written of more than 160 products and services - with new reviews constantly being added. The HEAR TODAY exhibition is a natural continuation of this idea, offering an opportunity for people to examine the services and equipment at first hand.” The exhibition will be open to the public from 10am until 4pm and teas, coffees and other refreshments will be available in the new church café.
