Head to Keston to recycle your compost

Waste-aware gardeners in and around Keston are now able to recycle their compost packaging thanks to a trial scheme from Dobbies Garden Centres. The company has teamed up with Evergreen Garden Care on the initiative which will see garden furniture created from the recycled material and donated to Greenfingers, a charity that creates green spaces for terminally-ill children. The Keston recycling scheme will be open for the first three weeks of September at Dobbies near Keston Mark.

Get sprouting!

It’s Zero Waste Week from 6th-10th September and what better way to mark the occasion than by making the switch to biodegradable and plantable Sprout pencils as a more sustainable stationery swap? The pencils are made from sustainably harvested wood, are fully biodegradable and are made from 100% natural materials including a graphite writing core and a cedar wood body. When the pencils become too small to write with, plant them into soil and after one to two weeks, the green plant-based capsule will sprout into non-GMO vegetables, herbs, flowers and even trees. It’s a great way of showcasing how innovative recycling and planting a green mindset can be!

The Tokyu Hotels Group has unveiled the world’s first hydrogen hotel in Kawasaki in Japan, which is entirely powered by waste. Hydrogen created from waste plastic supplies 30% of the hotel's energy needs and food waste is used to generate the other 70%.

E10 fuel launches

A new cleaner petrol known as E10 is being rolled out from this month with the aim of reducing carbon emissions. It's estimated that using E10 is the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road. For more information see www.gov.uk/guidance/e10-petrol-explained

Barbie-tastic!

Mattel has introduced Barbie Loves the Ocean collection, featuring its first fashion doll line made from recycled ocean-bound plastic.The collection includes three dolls whose bodies are made from 90% recycled ocean-bound plastic parts and an accompanying Beach Shack playset and accessories, made from over 90% recycled plastic.The launch is in line with Mattel’s goal to achieve 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials across all its products and packaging by 2030.
