Ousted Haitian Dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier Dead at 63 | Posted in Fun & Goofy or Serious

Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier died Saturday of a heart attack. Image: Dieu Nalio Chery PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Jean-Claude-Duvalier, the self-proclaimed “president for life” of Haiti whose corrupt and brutal regime sparked a popular uprising that sent him into a 25-year exile, died Saturday of a heart attack, his attorney said. Reynold George said the 63-year-old ex-leader died at his home. Duvalier, looking somewhat frail, made a surprise return to Haiti in 2011, allowing victims of his regime to pursue legal claims against him, and prompting some old allies to rally around him. Neither side gained much support, and the once-feared dictator known as “Baby Doc” spent his late years in relative obscurity in the leafy hills above the Haitian capital. Duvalier was the son of Francois “Papa Doc” Duvalier, a medical doctor-turneddictator who promoted “Noirisme,” a movement that sought to highlight Haiti’s African roots over its European ones while uniting the black majority against a mulatto elite in a country divided by class and color. The regimes of both leaders tortured and killed political opponents, and relied on a dreaded civilian militia known as the Tonton Macoutes. In 1971, Francois Duvalier suddenly died of an illness, and named his son to succeed him. At 19, Jean-Claude Duvalier became the world’s youngest president. The son was regarded as a lackluster student at a prestigious private Catholic school in the capital, but his teachers gave him passing grades to avoid fury from the National Palace, according to Written in Blood, a history of Haiti by Robert Debs Heinl and Nancy Gordon Heinl.

Jean-Claude Duvalier ruled for 15 years, his administration seen as less violent and repressive than his father’s. Echoes of press freedom and personal criticism — never tolerated under his father — emerged sporadically because of international pressure. Still, human rights groups documented abuses and political persecution. A trio of prisons known as the “Triangle of Death,” which included the much-feared Fort Dimanche for longterm inmates, symbolized the brutality of his regime. As president, Duvalier married the daughter of a wealthy coffee merchant, Michele Bennett, in 1980. The engagement caused a scandal among old Duvalierists, for she was a mulatto and the arrangement ran counter to the Noirisme movement that Duvalier’s father espoused. The wedding was a lavish affair, complete with imported champagne, flowers and fireworks. The ceremony, which reportedly costed $5 million, was broadcast live on television to the impoverished nation. Under Duvalier’s rule, Haiti saw widespread demographic changes. Peasants moved to the capital in search of work, as factories popped up to meet the growing demand for cheap labor. Thousands of professionals fled a climate of repression for cities such as New York, Miami and Montreal. Aid also began to flow from the United States and agencies such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. The tourists followed, some in search of a form of tropical hedonism that included booze, prostitution and Voodoo ceremonies for which Haiti became legendary. Tourism collapsed in the early 1980s after Florida doctors noted that an unusual number of AIDS cases were coming from Haitian emigres, even though the disease was believed to have been brought from the U.S. But it was corruption and human rights abuses that defined Duvalier’s rule. The National Palace became known for opulent parties, as Bennett took overseas shopping sprees to decorate, and collect fur coats. Duvalier relished taking his presidential yacht out for a spin, and racing sports cars. Under mounting pressure from the administration of U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Duvalier made pretenses of improving Haiti’s human rights record by releasing political prisoners. Still, journalists and activists were jailed or exiled. Haitians without visas or money left by boarding flimsy boats in a desperate effort to reach Florida shores. The New York-based Human Rights Watch estimated that up to 30,000 Haitians were killed, many by execution, under the regime of the two Duvaliers. As Haiti’s living conditions deteriorated, Pope John-Paul II made a visit in 1983, and famously declared: “Things must change.” Three years later, they did. A popular uprising swept across Haiti, and Duvalier and Bennett boarded a U.S.-government C-141 for France. The couple divorced in 1993. Duvalier later became involved with Veronique Roy, who accompanied him on his 2011 return to Haiti.

While in exile in France, Duvalier was never known to hold a job. He occasionally made public statements about his eagerness to return to Haiti. Supporters periodically marched on his behalf in the Haitian capital. On Jan. 16, 2011, Duvalier made his surprise return. He said he wanted to help in the reconstruction of Haiti, whose capital and outlying cities were heavily damaged in a magnitude-7.0 earthquake the year before. But many suspected Duvalier came back in an effort to reclaim money he had allegedly stashed. Others said he merely wanted to die in his homeland. More than 20 victims of his rule stepped forward to file charges that ranged from false imprisonment to torture. Human Rights Watch issued a report saying that Duvalier may not have directly participated in the torture and killings under his regime, but that there was enough evidence to prosecute him. In a 2007 radio interview, Duvalier asked Haitians to forgive him for “errors” made while he ruled the country, the BBC reported. Despite the occasional stay in the hospital, Duvalier seemed to enjoy his new life back home, and was free to roam the capital. He was spotted attending government ceremonies, dining with friends in several high-end restaurants and avoided jail time. In 2013, Duvalier began renovating an old house that Roy said had been destroyed in the wake of his 1986 ouster. The efforts to prosecute him stumbled along. Duvalier stunned human rights observers and alleged victims of his regime in 2013 when he testified about his rule before an investigating judge. A year later, a judge overturned an earlier court decision, and ruled that Duvalier could face crimes-against-humanity charges. But in the end, the case stalled because officials did little to move it along. Duvalier and Bennett had two children, son Francois Nicolas “Nico” and daughter Anya. NFL Player Launches App to Demystify Notorious Card Game | Posted in Fun & Goofy or Serious

The little-known Cajun card game called bourre gained a certain level of notoriety among sports fans after it led to a pair of high-profile altercations between NBA players in 2010 and 2011.

First, star guard Gilbert Arenas nearly lost his career after wielding an unlicensed handgun in the team locker room following a bourre-related gambling dispute with a fellow Washington Wizard. Then a couple Memphis Grizzlies fought on a team charter flight after some high stakes bourre gone bad. The two incidents served to pull back a curtain on a previously unheard-of part of pro athlete gambling culture, but gave bourre (pronounced BOO-ray) a hint of menace as well. Now an app released by NFL player Bernard Pollard aims to demystify the game by making it appeal to more people who can play virtually and without having to bet actual money on its outcome. Pollard says he’s seen pots among teammates reach into the tens of thousands of dollars since entering the NFL in 2006. “I just want the app to make people be able to have fun with the game, where you don’t have to hand out any money and then your wife looks at you crazy, like, ‘You just wrote a check for how much?'” he told Mashable. The aptly-named Bourre App costs $1.99 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Pollard says it’s registered steady user growth — including a number of Pollard’s NFL peers — since launching in August, with one major update still to come. The app lets users bet fake currency during hands of the game, which has been described as a mashup of poker and spades. Pollard funded Bourre App entirely on his own, but enlisted friend and former teammate Ryan Moats to help make his vision a reality. Moats once interned at EA Sports during the NFL off-season and now operates a graphic design company called Moastworks Studios. “It’s tough to pick someone and say, ‘Hey, I really don’t know you but I’m going to trust you and give you all this money to make this happen,'” says Pollard, whose Crush Boy nickname comes from his tough on-field hits. “But with Ryan, I trust him completely and knew he would do a great job and really want the game to be great.” But don’t think the Bourre App is a digital one-off for Pollard and Moats. They used to scheme about creating a Max Payne-style video game, and already have some other projects planned. “It’s just me wanting to do something that people can have fun with, and show people that I can be something other than a football player,” Pollard says. Does Pollard’s Bourre App sound like something you might check out? Let us know in the comments.

Does Being Single Suck So Much That We Need To Get Naked? | Posted in Fun & Goofy or Serious

The new dating show Dating Naked is not your average quest for love. While most reality competitions feature superficial people judging and eliminating others almost entirely on looks, Dating Naked takes the stigma of body type out of the equation by putting it all out there immediately and letting you get a first hand look at someone’s entire dating package, literally. Plus, you no longer have to head exclusively to HBO to get your daily dose of small screen boobs. Dating naked also begs the question, WTF have Americans resorted to when it comes to love? Is it SO shitty out there in the dating world that we’re resorting to getting naked on national television in order to get laid? I mean, with instant gratification I guess it makes sense. Why check out a bro on Tinder and have to imagine what’s underneath when you can literally see a guy’s penis size when you first lay eyes on him.

Sure, the characters are not the brightest people in the world. The first episode featured a 36 year old woman who actually goes by Wee-Wee looking for love, which is kind of indicative of her overall problem anyway. Other hilarious shit includes the immediate analysis of tattoos, unrestrained dick and boobs during water sports, and contestants’ sad, sad stories about how they’ve had such a shitty job on Match.com that they’re literally willing to go tubing without so much as a bandeau bikini top in the name of love. Take that, Free the Nipple. I mean we’re definitely going to watch it because if I’m going to subject myself to yet another dating show naked on my couch, the contestants might as well be along for

the ride. Dating Naked airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on VH1. For more of an idea of the ridiculous stuff in store, check out the video:

Newport in mourning. | Posted in Fun & Goofy or Serious

NEWPORT – Four large glass-enclosed candles burned Wednesday next

to four bouquets of deep red roses atop a marker engraved with the names of more than 100 Lincoln County fishermen who have lost their lives at sea since 1900. The tokens honored the memory of four more men whose names will soon be added to the marker inside the Fishermen’s Memorial Sanctuary at Yaquina Bay State Park. The spot overlooks the jetties where local fishing boats pass on their way to and from the sea. “May the Creator bless the crew of the Fishing Vessel Nesika, their families and friends,” read a paper left with the flowers and candles. “We mourn with you in your great loss.” Three Newport men – Robert Thompson, 40, Steven Langlot, 34, and Ben Eder, 21 – and 20-year-old Jared Hamrick of Waldport died when their 40-foot crabber capsized Tuesday morning a half-mile off Yaquina Head as it was lowering crab pots into place on the ocean floor.

The Coast Guard suspended the search for the missing men late Wednesday morning, though members of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Posse and other volunteers will continue to search the beaches for their bodies. Their battered boat washed up on Beverly Beach north of Newport, and a salvage crew dragged it along the beach to the end of an access road, where it will be loaded aboard a truck this morning. A search of the vessel turned up no sign of the men. Thompson, the Nesika skipper, had been a fishermen for 15 years and was always cautious at sea, said his brother-in-law, Perry Garrett of Spokane. Garrett came to Newport to be with his sister – Thompson’s wife, Patricia – and the couple’s three children, Tyson, 18, Katie, 15, and Josh, 13. “He would not do anything to endanger himself or his crew,” Garrett said. “It’s just something that happened.” Fishing was Thompson’s life, Garrett said, and dying at sea is probably the way he would have chosen to go. “He’s still there watching us. And he’s going to be watching every fisherman from now on. He’s a protector.” The community also paid tribute to the lost fishermen and is pulling together to help their loved ones. Lincoln County commissioners opened their meeting Wednesday with a moment of silence. The flag next to the commercial boat basin flew at half-staff in wind-driven rain.

Members of the Newport Fishermen’s Wives Association met with grieving family and friends. Counselors at Newport High School talked with students and staff. “This is a fishing community. Fishing is part of the culture of Newport,” said Ginny Goblirsch, president of the association. “Everybody feels the loss.” Oregon’s Dungeness crab fishery is perhaps the most dangerous – fishermen harvest most of the crab in December and January during the worst weather and ocean conditions that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Crews know they may miss a good payday if they stay in port – especially in the early part of the season, which begins Dec. 1. “But no fisherman dwells on the fact that you could die, or you wouldn’t be a fisherman,” Goblirsch said. Knowing the danger doesn’t make it any easier for the families of fishermen who are lost. About 20 family members and friends gathered at the Coast Guard station during the search, attended by Fishermen’s Wives members and others who offered moral support and helped them notify out-of-town relatives. “They’re holding up well under the circumstances, but the pain is indescribable,” Goblirsch said. The wives group has been through such tragedies before. Goblirsch said members will offer long-term support to the families, but the association’s financial resources are limited and there are no

pensions for families of lost fishermen. Newport has perhaps 50 of Oregon’s 325 active crab boats. Most of the crab fleet continued to set the large round steel-and-wire crab pots Wednesday, then headed into port. A gale is expected to keep them off the ocean for the next few days. Goblirsch said the crew of the Nesika had a good boat, good safety gear and solid training and experience. The boat was owned by Robert Eder, the father of one of the crew members and a fisherman with a reputation for stressing safety and keeping his boats shipshape. A wave probably hit the boat broadside as it was setting gear, Goblirsch said. And it must have happened very quickly, she speculated. “So I guess that’s a blessing,” she said. “They didn’t suffer.” At Yaquina Bay State Park, a gazebo-style enclosure shelters the memorial. Underneath are a few benches. The Fishermen’s Wives solicited help from the community to build the memorial, and dedication is scheduled next year after completion of some final work. The names cover two sides of the marker – the most recent on the side closest to the ocean. Dots next to some of the names indicate that the bodies were recovered. It’s a good place for people to come, sit and remember their loved ones, said Connie Kennedy, a Fishermen’s Wives member whose husband is a crab fisherman. And the number of visitors probably will increase in the wake of the Nesika tragedy.

“It’s a comfort to the families. It’s a comfort for the community,” Kennedy said. NEWPORT CRAB FLEET Most recent losses: Dec. 11, 2001 – Fishing Vessel Nesika. Four crewmen lost. Dec. 8, 1999 – Fishing Vessel Blue Heather. Two crewmen lost. Dec. 6, 1994 – Fishing Vessel Amber Dawn II. Four crewmen lost. To help families: Send donations to the Newport Fishermen’s Wives Family Support Fund, P.O. Box 971, Newport, OR 97365. Contributions may be earmarked for the families of Nesika crew members – all of them or specific families. CAPTION(S): CHRIS PIETSCH / The Register-Guard Coast Guard, state police and salvage personnel board the Nesika after it ran aground at Beverly Beach north of Newport on Wednesday. Four men died when the 40-foot crabber capsized Tuesday morning off Yaquina Head. Flowers and candles are left at the Fishermen’s Memorial Sanctuary at Yaquina Bay State Park by grieving members of the Newport community. S. BARROW / The Register-Guard No Comments

Will Smith Sings Fresh Prince Theme Song With English School Children | Posted in Fun & Goofy or Serious

World famous actor Will Smith is no doubt most famous for his original starring role on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air TV show from the 1990′s. Where ever Smith goes, young people seem to know the lyrics to the Fresh Prince theme song, and want to sing it with him.

Last year, he and the studio audience on The Graham Norton Show on the BBC all sang the theme together, and now video of that performance stands with over 7 million hits. Will recently visited a British middle school, and while on stage, of course was asked to rap the theme song. All he had to say was, “West Philadelphia…” for the entire room of school children to rise to their feet screaming, cheering, and singing along. The week old video of the outrageous scene has gone viral, and stands with over 300,000 views.

Klout Adds Support for Facebook Pages | Posted in Fun & Goofy or Serious

Starting Friday, Facebook pages are now integrated into your Klout score. Klout estimates that a user with a score between 70-80 has an average of 13,000 users talking about their Facebook page. The new feature allows you to connect your brand or organization’s page to your Klout account and then have activity for that page help grow your Klout score. In August, Klout unveiled a completely new look and pushed out updated scores for all of its users. The new look and score showcase not only your score, but also the individual posts that got you there. “We went from about 100 variables that we were looking at to over 400,” Joe Fernandez, founder and CEO of Klout told Mashable after the site’s redesign earlier this year. “We’re looking at a bunch of new stuff.” Klout updates earlier this year also included support “real-world influence,” taking into account your title at your job — a CEO of a company will get more Klout than the mailman — or if you’re important enough to have your own Wikipedia page. The redesign also added a new feature called “Your Moments,” a look back at your most influential tweets and posts over the past 90 days.

Individual page content will start appearing on your Klout profile soon. How do you feel about Klout adding support for Facebook pages? Let is know your thoughts in the comments. Read more: http://mashable.com/2012/09/28/klout-facebook-pages/ No Comments
