What You Need to Know

Connect with Conway

Fifty Candles

Few entertainers in television history have captured the hearts of viewers the way Tim Conway has. Throughout his career, it has always been obvious there was nothing Conway would rather do than entertain, and, in his just-released memoir, “What’s So Funny? (Howard Books, 2013), that’s exactly what he does. Long regarded as one of the funniest men in America, Conway also boasts an inspiring rags-to-riches story. “What’s So Funny?” captures his journey from a child of the Great Depression to his tour of duty in the Army and ascent as a national star. The book also reveals the origins of many of his unforgettable characters and offers never-before-shared stories of hilarious behind-the-scenes antics on “McHale’s Navy,” “The Carol Burnett Show,” and working with such entertainment greats as Harvey Korman, Don Knotts, Dick Van Dyke, Betty White, Vicki Lawrence, Bob Newhart, and of course, Carol Burnett. If you are in the Southern California area, you will have a rare opportunity to meet Conway and get a signed copy of his book on November 13 at 7: p.m. at Barnes & Noble on Grove Drive in Los Angeles.

Fifty years ago this month, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas at the age of 46 and Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson became the 36th U.S. president. Two days later, Lee Harvey Oswald, the 24-year-old assassin, was shot dead by nightclub owner Jack Ruby on live television. Before the month was over, Johnson established the Warren Commission to investigate the assassination. On a lighter note, The Beatles released “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Notable personalities who were born in November 1963 and are celebrating their 50th birthday this month include actresses Tatum O’Neal and Nicollette Sheridan, professional football players Vinny Testaverde and Bernie Kosar, and sports journalist Scoop Jackson.

A Little Moving = Improving Take a short walk, ride your bike to the corner market, grab your partner and do a little dance or have sex. According to a recent study appearing in the “American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry,” short bursts of exercise like these can increase decision-making capabilities and lead to improved health. Author Lot Verburgh’s findings suggest that moderate exercise, using about 60 percent of your maximum exertion, will increase blood flow to your brain. According to Verburgh, just 10 minutes of exercise can make a difference, but 20 to 30 minutes is better.

Breaking Betty What does Betty White have in common with Zeus, the world’s tallest living dog, and Archie the smallest bull? They each hold world records documented by Guinness. Included in their forthcoming 2014 updates, Guinness has listed White as holding the record for the longest television career of any female entertainer. With a career that has spanned 74 years, White made her broadcast debut in 1939. Just out of high school, she and a friend sang songs from “The Merry Widow” on an experimental Los Angeles station. Since then, the queen of the small screen has appeared in some of the most iconic shows in television history including “The Golden Girls” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Currently starring in “Hot in Cleveland,” White, who will turn 92 in January, shows no signs of stopping.

A LITTLE MORE YOU NEED TO KNOW: Getting to Know the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

New Words

Despite the rhetoric and war being waged in Washington, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka PPACA or Obamacare, is the congressional and senatepassed law, signed by the president and deemed constitutional by the Supreme Court. Simply put, it is the law of the land and, it is here to stay. This new law will have a tremendous impact on how American healthcare is offered, purchased and delivered. It may be controversial, but no matter what one’s feeling are, it is paramount that everyone, of every age, educate themselves on what it is, as well as what it isn’t. If there is one thing everyone agrees on, it is that the PPACA is complicated. So, as a service to our readers, Life After 50 will do our best to break it down into the most simplified terms. Each month, without any agenda other than to educate, we will offer the answers to three questions as to what the PPACA does and doesn’t do.

The Oxford English Dictionary may not have recognized them as of yet, but they’re a part of the everyday American vocabulary, so you need to know what they mean.

Will our taxes go up as of January 1, 2014? Maybe. For the top five percent of earners, making over $200,000 a year, taxes will go up by 0.9 percent. In the event of a catastrophic illness, does the PPACA call for “death panels” to determine if a patient will get treatment? No. The PPACA actually works to stop so-called “death panels.” No part of the bill says anything about appointing people to decide whether or not someone dies. The decision over whether or not any claim is approved is, as it has always been, in the hands of the insurer. However, there is now an appeal process, so if a claim gets turned down, it can be challenged. This appeal process will be government-monitored to see if any insurer is being unfair to customers. Since there are no death panels, what is the role of the Independent Medicare Payment Advisory Board? The Independent Medicare Payment Advisory Board gives recommendations on how to save Medicare costs per person, deliver more efficient and effective care, improve access to services, and eliminate waste. However, the board is just a recommending body without any real power. All they can do is make a recommendation to put before congress that will vote on their recommendations and then send them on to the president who can either sign or veto them. The board has been specifically told their recommendations must not ration healthcare, raise premiums or co-pays, restrict benefits, or restrict eligibility. In other words, any cost-saving recommendations they make cannot include increased costs or reduced care for patients.

Appisode: A television show, series or episode that is available as an app. Digin: (Pronounced Dejin) To text, Tweet, post on Pinterest, comment on Facebook or use any other form of social media. Selfie: An arm-extended photo taken of oneself with a camera, smartphone or other image-capturing device.

The Most Important Thing to Know This Month The Medicare Open Enrollment period runs throughout the entire month of November and ends on December 7. If you, or someone you love, is a Medicare recipient, this is the annual opportunity to review the healthcare coverage that is being used and see if any changes need to be made. This year, with the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka PPACA or Obamacare, you may also hear about the Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment period. If you have health coverage through Medicare, this will not have any effect on your Medicare coverage.

WHERE DO I INVEST MY MONEY NOW? Many investors are trying to make sense from the stock market’s continued highs and the US economy’s lack luster performance. With debt and unemployment still at all time highs, GDP continuing to drop, and inflation beginning to knock on our door, where do you turn to invest your retirement. . You definitely have to own property as it is the best hedge against inflation and currency devaluation, but you also need liquidity as well. One must find a liquid investment that pays better than a 0.25% bank money market so your portfolio does not lose value based on time value of money and the constant devaluation of our currency. One solution for a safe and guaranteed investment is PMF Investment Notes which pays 7.39% interest per year. These notes are short term notes of 13-months in duration, and are very safe because they are invested in “corporate accounts receivables” from major companies like CostCo, Walmart and many other credit worthy companies. PMF Investment Notes have been paying investors for over 20 years without ever losing a penny for our note holders. Best of all, the interest is paid monthly. To learn more about this secure investment that pays 7.4%, please visit www.PMFbancorp.com/PMFnotes. By: Stephen Perl, MS, MBA and President of PMF Investment Corp. (stephen@ PMFbancorp.com)

SETTLING A SIBLING DISPUTE ON MEDI-CAL ELIGIBILITY

Q

My parents sold our family home to move to an assisted living facility. Recently, my mom’s condition deteriorated and she had to be hospitalized. After a couple weeks in the hospital, her doctor is now saying my mom requires full-time care in a nursing home and he can’t give us any assurance she will ever be able to return to the assisted living community. My sister told my father to apply for Medi-Cal to pay for the nursing home; otherwise he will have to move to a less expensive place. My dad is all for it, because he doesn’t want to move. I, however, am dead-set against it, because I don’t want my mother to go to an inferior nursing home where she won’t get quality care. Also, I don’t believe my father and mother would be eligible for Medi-Cal because they cleared about $430,000 when they sold their house. I feel like the things my sister and father are doing will be to my mom’s detriment. While my sister, perhaps, just doesn’t care, I believe my dad doesn’t understand that. Also, I feel like something improper is going on for them to be eligible to get Medi-Cal. Please let me know if I’m right or if my sister is right?

A

The fact is, your sister is right. That is not to say that your concerns aren’t valid, especially based on what people are generally told about Medi-Cal nursing home care and eligibility. However, the fact is that your mom can receive very good care under the Long Term Care Medi-Cal program. This program has federally mandated quality of care guidelines and middle-class individuals and couples can be eligible. The reality is that most facilities that accept Medi-Cal also have private pay and Medicare patients. In fact, the Federal Nursing Home Reform Act protects Medi-Cal and Medicare patients by establishing certain quality of care guidelines that facilities are required to follow. Should the facility fail to follow those guidelines, they can be at risk of losing their contract with the government for reimbursements. Before your mom is discharged to a nursing home, I strongly encourage you and your family to visit a few and investigate the facility’s quality of care record. I agree with your sister that your dad should commence the Medi-Cal eligibility planning as soon as possible. Since the bulk of the assets are the proceeds from the sale of your parents’ home, they wouldn’t fit into an exempt retirement investment category. As such, your parents would be above the eligibility limit for combined assets. However, there is a way for attorneys to apply for an increase in the allowable assets or to set forth other strategies to exempt assets. Proper planning would enable your father to have your mother’s care paid by the Long Term Care Medi-Cal program, while ensuring that he has enough income and available assets to pay for his assisted living care. This would ensure that your father could remain at the assisted living facility where he has been living. You should also know that having these additional assets available would also enable your father to pay for the care of your mother that Medi-Cal doesn’t cover. And keep in mind, if your mom were ever able to return to the assisted living facility, having had Medi-Cal coverage during her time in the nursing home would also provide additional money for her care there. In order to make sure there are no misunderstandings about the Long Term Care Medi-Cal eligibility process and the selection of a nursing home, I suggest you and your family attend meetings with an elder law attorney. Should there be any issues as to the appropriateness of one facility over another, there are also professionals, like a geriatric care manager, who can help you and your family determine the appropriate facility for your mom. I wish you and your family the best of luck. )

YOU CAN AND SHOULD BE EARNING SEVEN PERCENT

R

emember when you could invest your money in a CD at seven percent? Those were the days, back when you saw excellent yields on your money and had great security knowing it was safe. Well, as you probably know, current interest rates on a one-year CD are hovering at just one percent. At those levels, you aren’t even keeping up with inflation. However, there IS a way you can earn seven percent on your money while keeping it safe.

SAFE MEANS SAFE I’ve been in the wealth-management business for almost 17 years, so I understand when people say the word “safe they really mean “SAFE. I always assure my clients that I hear them loud and clear; that they are saying not just “safe, but “SAFE. For the last three years, my readers and clients have had the opportunity to earn seven percent or more by investing in what I call double secured first trust deeds. If you have been sitting on the sidelines unsure of just how safe these assets are, you have missed out on great interest rates for three years. During that time, no client of ours has lost a cent of principal on their trust deeds and every client has earned seven percent or more. And the good news: there is no reason to expect any change in the security of trust deeds for many years to come. DOUBLE SECURED A trust deed is secured first by real estate. Typically, my clients are lending only 50 to 60 percent on a property based on today’s value confirmed with a current appraisal. This means the real estate is worth close to double the amount we are actually lending. This first layer of security by itself means trust deeds should be considered a great option for high income. Because I am such a strong advocate for avoiding risk, we also recommend adding a second layer of security to a trust deed investment. I recommend that all investors of trust deeds ask for a buyout agreement. The buyout agreement basically provides for an independent fund or investor to buy the trust deed from you if the borrower doesn’t pay you back. It’s like a GetOut-Of-Jail-Free card in Monopoly. If there is a problem, you implement the buyout agreement and are entitled to be paid every dollar you originally invested in the trust deed within 30 days. Why would a fund or other investor be willing to do this? Remember, we are lending only 50 to 60 percent of the property value. This means if the borrower doesn’t pay the money back, either you or the buyout agreement investor gets to foreclose on the property. After foreclosure, the property is sold and someone may end up making significantly more than the seven percent I’ve said could be made. Either way, you have safety and control. While all investments have risks, I have found that my clients are comfortable in agreeing with me that this is currently the best safe money investment available. I strongly encourage you to educate yourself on this excellent fixed-income investment option and see how you can earn seven percent or more on your safe money.

Dr. Nancy Snyderman

I

t’s early in the morning – real early. The sun isn’t up, but Dr. Nancy Snyderman is. “I leave my house at five in the morning and get to the studio by six,” says the former cancer surgeon who, since 2006, has served as NBC’s chief medical editor. “I do that four days a week, although I also work from home, because NBC graciously put a studio in my house so I can go live on the air at any time.” After devouring three newspapers and a cup of coffee during the 50-mile, chauffeur-driven trek from her Princeton, New Jersey home to mid-town Manhattan, Dr. Snyderman exits her car between 49th and 50th Streets. She passes through a portal adorned with a frieze designed by one the nation’s most-renowned architectural sculptors, Lee Lawrie, which was inspired by the words of the prophet Isaiah: “Wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times,” and makes her way through the halls of the most revered address in broadcast history – 30 Rockefeller Plaza – the GE Building – 30 Rock. The centerpiece of Rockefeller Center, the 70-floor Art Deco edifice (formerly known as the RCA Building) has, since 1933, served as the headquarters of the National Broadcasting Company and the home of some of radio and television’s most legendary programs, performers and broadcast journalists.

“It’s a truly amazing place,” says Dr. Snyderman. “When you walk down the halls lined with the pictures of the legends who have gone before – (Arturo) Toscanini, David Sarnoff, Johnny Carson, Jack Paar – you can’t help but know that you are on hallowed ground. The place is brimming with history. In fact, my first office at NBC was once the studio where they did ‘The Howdy Doody Show,’” she adds with a laugh. Today, with the halls and broadcast studios of NBC serving as her workplace and tailored business suits as her la mode de tous les joursha, the St. Louis-born Snyderman says that was never really the plan she envisioned for herself. While attending South Side High School in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, earning a bachelor of arts degree in microbiology at Indiana University and then her doctorate of medicine from the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Medicine, she envisioned her career would always find her in hospital operating rooms outfitted in surgical scrubs. A BUDDING BROADCASTER After doing medical residencies in pediatrics and ear, nose, and throat surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania, 1983 saw Dr. Snyderman move to Little Rock, Arkansas where she joined the surgical staff at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, specializing in throat and neck cancers. “I never went to Little Rock thinking I was going to get into television,” Dr. Snyderman explains. “I went there for a job. At the time, my chief of surgery in Pittsburgh was friends with James Suen, who was chief of surgery in Arkansas. He knew I was trying to find a job and mentioned that he had worked on a book with Suen and that I should look into Little Rock. I said: ‘Excuse me sir. You really expect me to move to Little Rock, Arkansas?’ He said: ‘Do you have a job?’ I said: ‘No sir.’ And he said: ‘Then I wouldn’t be so cocky.’” If the idea of moving to Little Rock had limited appeal to the young doctor, those feelings were only magnified when she met her first Arkansan – a doctor of Asian descent with a Southern drawl as thick as molasses in January. “He took me out to lunch, for barbeque at Say McIntosh’s,” she reminisces with a laugh. “That didn’t do anything to change my hopes of going to Northwestern University, joining their faculty and attending in cancer surgery.” In a land of colorful Southern characters, Robert “Say” McIntosh was one of the most colorful. A political gadfly and black rights activist, McIntosh repeatedly staged mock crucifixions of himself on crosses outside of the Arkansas State Capitol building, the governor’s mansion and the Pulaski County Sheriff ’s office. A local restaurateur, he would often stage special sales of his locally famous sweet potato pie to fund his various political campaigns that, along with his crucifixion stunts, included losing bids for lieutenant governor and a seat on the Little Rock City Board of Directors. He even threatened to run for governor against then-incumbent Governor Bill Clinton and former Governor Orval Faubus in 1986. “When we got to McIntosh’s, there was a sign on the front door that said ‘No Whites Allowed,’” Dr. Snyderman recalls. “I didn’t know what to think of it all, so I just sat in the car eating until Say came out and invited me in. He said: ‘I don’t mean you, honey. That’s just there to keep Bill Clinton out.’ I thought: ‘Oh my! This is a surreal place!’” she adds with a laugh. While her initial visit to Little Rock didn’t exactly ingratiate her to Southern life, she was offered a position at the University of Arkansas that she accepted. “I had done a little bit of television reporting in Pittsburgh and so when I got to Arkansas, I was young and dumb enough to take my tapes to the ABC and NBC affiliates in Little Rock. The NBC affiliate promptly lost them, but Jim Pitcock, the news director at the ABC affiliate, KATV, met with me and was interested in having me do medical reports. So, after a little negotiating, they offered to pay me $37.50 per story. My first television segment there was with Joycelyn Elders, who was the director of the Arkansas Department of Health. It was a story on head lice. And that was how my broadcast career was born.” FROM LITTLE ROCK TO 30 ROCK After leaving Little Rock, Dr. Snyderman went on to practice head and neck surgery at the University of California San Francisco and California Pacific Medical Center, and also served as a medical correspondent for the Bay Area’s CBS affiliate, KPIX-TV. From there, she was tapped by ABC News where, for seventeen years, she was a contributor to “20/20,” “Primetime” and “Good Morning America” for which, along with filing medical reports, she also served as a frequent co-host of the

venerable morning program. Since joining NBC News as the network’s chief medical editor in September 2006, Dr. Snyderman has become a regular fixture on “Today,” “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” and various MSNBC programs. She covers wide-ranging medical topics and has traveled the world extensively reporting from many of the planet’s most war-torn and disease-plagued areas. Asked how she feels about having to relinquish her work as a surgeon, Dr. Snyderman says she found it impossible to continue treating patients with the demands her correspondent work placed on her. “I just couldn’t practice anymore with my schedule,” she says matter-of-factly. “I never know where I may be in the world from one day to the next. As a surgeon, I always wanted to be able to tell my patients I would be there when they woke up and, increasingly, as I was asked to do more foreign stories, especially during the Serbo-Croatian War, I couldn’t do that. They asked me to do stories as a war correspondent through a medical eye, which meant I was on planes more and more. I had always been proud of the fact that my patients came first and, when the day came that I realized I could not do that, I figured it was time for me to leave the operating room.” Today, the mother of three children is also the author of four books: “Dr Nancy Snyderman’s Guide to Good Health for Women Over Forty” (Mariner Books, 1996), “Necessary Journeys” (Hyperion, 2000), “Girl in the Mirror: Mothers and Daughters in the Years of Adolescence” (Hyperion, 2003), and “Diet Myths That Keep Us Fat: And the 101 Truths That Will Save Your Waistline – and Maybe Even Your Life” (Harmony, 2010). She recently launched her own website, www.DrNancySnyderman. com, where she answers health and medical questions, takes suggestions for upcoming story ideas for NBC, and contributes a daily video and written blog. She is also the co-founder of www.CarePlanners.com, a service that helps people navigate the complexities of the healthcare system and cope with the demands of caregiving. “The number of unpaid caregivers in America is going up dramatically every day and the stress on those who are caring for a family member is significant,” she says. “Caregivers don’t get enough sleep. They don’t eat the right foods, and financial strains are adding to their stress. I’m dealing with that myself. My parents are 86 and 90. I work a very full and very long day and am constantly worrying about them and checking on them. I’m very glad they can live independently. They are smart and taking care of themselves, but they are always in the back of my mind. That’s why I created CarePlanners.com. It is a place where people can talk to a nurse or a social worker 24/7. If you get a bill that doesn’t make sense or you’re not sure of what treatment options are available or what clinical trials may be available, it’s a place to get answers. People need that, because the medical care community is so complicated. Look, I’m a physician and I find the healthcare system to be extremely complicated.” Which prompts the question: Does she understand the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and think it will work? “I don’t think anyone knows as of yet,” she says. “The White House has done a very poor job of explaining it and rolling it out. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be good, and maybe very good. For those of us who have our adult children on our insurance, it’s good. For woman and reproductive services, it is going to be very good. But how the exchanges are going to work remains to be seen. That said, at the end of the day, I do believe everyone should give it a chance. Americans should not have to get their medical care in cattle yards during state fairs. That is a disgrace. I feel very strongly that our members of Congress are our public servants. We elect them to work for us. They have health insurance, really good health insurance, with a lot of choices. So why shouldn’t the average American have health coverage just like the people who work for them?” GOING FOR THE GUSTO When it comes to the health of Americans over 50, Dr. Snyderman says she has concerns with trends she is seeing. “I worry that Americans aren’t taking care of their bodies very well,” she says. “We are living longer, but we’re living with more chronic illnesses. Just look at Americans’ expanding waistlines. We are paying the price with high blood pressure and diabetes and heart disease and stroke. The goal for all of us, especially for those over 50, is to maintain or reclaim our health. Today, about half of the people over 50 have a chronic condition, arthritis being one of the most common and diabetes being right up there. A lot of these problems can be well-managed or even reversed. Baby boomers, who have always believed that getting old and dying was merely an option, have to wake up. When you have to ➤

say goodbye to dear friends who are your age, you are forced to realize that age is creeping in on us. The top goal of everyone over 50 should be how to live out our lives with phenomenal gusto.” To attain that gusto, Dr. Snyderman says there are four things that must be done: adopt a positive attitude, eat properly, get exercise, and do everything to reduce the use of unnecessary prescription drugs. “You are your genes and each of us gets a certain deck to play,” she says. “But you can trump some of those genes my making good lifestyle choices and by adopting a positive attitude. The mind-body connection is alive and well and it is being embraced in medicine today like never before.” As for adopting better eating habits, Dr. Snyderman says people must come to terms with the fact that everything you put in your month has a consequence, and the pros and cons have to be weighed. “When it comes to diet, I believe in common sense moderation,” she says. “I had a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs and a Guinness beer for lunch yesterday. It was great. But then for dinner, I had fish and today I had a small salad.” When the subject turns to the use of prescription medications, Dr. Snyderman says the misuse of drugs is one of her major concerns. “I am a big believer in giving medications when they are needed,” she explains. “If depression is a debilitating part of life for a patient, they should be treated. If someone needs a statin, they should get it and take it. But we are an over-prescribed nation and patients are as much, if not more, at fault for that as the doctors. The reality is, Americans like to take a pill to get well. We have become accustomed to going to a doctor, having them determine what is wrong with us and then giving us a prescription. I’ve seen doctors tell people they don’t want to prescribe something and their patients get irritated. One of the first things a patient always says to their doctor is: ‘What can you give me?’ They ask job no. FL-091325 that and they want something, even if the doctor doesn’t feel they need a drug. When a patient goes to see their doctor, their expectation is that they will walk out with a prescription something to make whatever they are suffering from better. The client for Forest Lawn dangerous thing with that is people are taking unnecessary drugs for problems a project New Property Ad change in diet may be able to solve. Look at all the anti-hypertension drugs on the After 50 on the market. For some of the people taking these market and all theLife cardiac drugs date 9/18/13 drugs, all they would need to do is eat better, lose weight and do regular exercise. If they did color that, they4c could get off those medications.” Asked to address her feelings on maintaining a positive attitude, Dr. Snyderman live Visual says thattrim while she4.625"w was fortunate to be born with “a happy gene” that, for the most x 11.5"h part, gives her a rosy outlook on things, she does understand that aging can bring bleed none about depression and has looked to the example of two women to maintain a scale positive attitude –100% her mother and the late chef, Julia Child. “I was lucky enough to count Julia as a real friend,” she says. “She was a remarkable woman. What many people don’t know is that her first cookbook wasn’t material close 9/18/13 published till she was 50. She became such an indelible part of American life after she turned 50. So, every time I wonder if I have another act in me, I think of Julia, who always had another act in her – right up to the very end. She was, and still is, a true inspiration to me, as is my 86-year-old mother who has grace and gumption, who doesn’t like mean people, and who stands up for the little guy. She really found her feminist political voice in the autumn of her years. My mom and Julia have had the greatest influence on my life.”

IN CONSTANT REINVENTION MODE As for the passing of years, Dr. Snyderman laughs when asked if she has adopted any philosophy about aging. “Look, I’ll admit it, I hated my 60th birthday,” she reveals. “It was a number that was very hard for me to deal with and it was a very blah day for me. But then, I started thinking about Julia and how this is my chance to reinvent myself again. I am very lucky that I got to be a surgeon and work in broadcasting, but now I am in my business and mentoring mode and I find myself constantly thinking about new ventures and writing and wanting to share the information I have gained. So I’ve gotten to where I am really jazzed by where I am. I look around and see women who are older than me who are setting the world on fire in what they are doing and accomplishing – Diane Sawyer, Jane Fonda, Barbara Walters, Justice (Ruth Bader) Ginsburg – there are so many amazing women out there working well into their 60 and 70s. This is great, because we know that for every year you stay in the workforce, your chance of getting dementia goes down by about three percent.” Pressed to reveal what she does on the rare day that she has time to herself, she is quick to say it would first and foremost be one of no makeup and GapBody clothes. “When I have a day to myself, I ride my horse in the morning and do Pilates in the afternoon,” she says. “A perfect day for me would be to do some gardening, go on a two-and-a-half-mile walk with my father, and then get some fish and grill outside. I would then sit on my back deck and look out over into the wilderness and just think. I do that more than people may think. I actually have a very quiet life. I avoid the limelight and enjoy spending time with close friends and our extremely close family.” And what is on the horizon for this woman who has embraced the concept of constant reinvention? “To me, life is divided into thirds,” she says in answer to that question. “My first third was all about getting my education. My second was working hard to become a top-notch surgeon and then getting my broadcasting career established. And my third, which I’m in now, is about staying connected to the people in my life who really matter and to do whatever I can to help bring young, smart people up behind me. I’m a big believer in being a mentor. I think, as we get older, it is so important to be around people other than those of your own age. If you saw my medical team, I’m old enough to be everyone’s mother. I make it a point to always be around younger and smarter people who are constantly thinking in new ways that I am not. That’s what keeps me in a constant reinvention mode.”✦

MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT Navigating your way through the maze of confusion BY MARYANN KOPP

A

ccording to a recent survey, more than 60 percent of Medicare beneficiaries have never shopped around to find health or prescription drug coverage that might better suit their needs, despite their annual opportunity to do so during the open enrollment period that, this year, runs from October 15 to December 7. That’s unfortunate, because Medicare is not a one-size-fits-all program and a lot can change in a year in terms of people’s health status and budget, as well as the plans that are available. As you are reading this issue of Life After 50, Medicare’s open enrollment period is officially upon us and the options are as plentiful as ever. Some trends are suggesting that the options are also better than those available to beneficiaries in the past years. But with as many changes that are seemingly constantly taking place, especially those concerning the Affordable Care Act, what should be a straight shot can quickly turn into a mired labyrinth that can seem near impossible to navigate through on one’s own. While this annual year-end labyrinth is a confusing maze of twists and turns, a yearly review really should not be avoided. And with open enrollment ending December 7, now is the time where such information should be researched and considered as thoroughly as possible. (This is, after all, your health we’re talking about.) As Joseph R. Antos, Ph.D., a Wilson H. Taylor scholar in healthcare and retirement policy at the American Enterprise Institute, stated, “Even if you are happy with your current plan choices, you should see what is available this year. Health plans and your personal needs may have changed since last year. There may be options among MA (Medicare Advantage) or Part D plans that better suit you, even if you are now in traditional Medicare.” Indeed, there have been many changes that have taken place in recent years, and it would seem that extra caution should be exercised as a result. Encouragingly, we have also seen some positive trends concerning both Medicare Advantage and Part D plans develop with said changes, and Raymond Thorn of the Office of Communications with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reiterated the sentiment by divulging information gathered by the organization. Part C: Medicare Advantage In short, Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are where you can enroll in a private health plan while receiving all of the benefits of Medicare. A good portion of these plans are selected in lieu of selecting plans for Parts A and B. According to a recent announcement from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, in reports released from CMS, more beneficiaries are not only choosing MA plans, but they are opting for the more “higher quality... plans, and for the fourth straight year enrollment is projected to increase.” Over

16 NOVEMBER 2013 LIFEAFTER50.COM

50 percent of those enrolled in MA plans (a considerable increase from only 37 percent last year) chose ones which have been rated with four or more stars, five being the highest rating. The ratings are based upon the performance and overall quality, and is a system which is provided to assist beneficiaries as well as their families or caregivers in choosing plans. There are a number of reasons for the recent increase in enrollees, one being that the average MA premium for this upcoming year is believed to only increase by $1.64 from the previous year, totaling $32.60. Secretary Sebelius went on to state that, “As a result of the Affordable Care Act, Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plans remain strong and continue to provide improved benefits and low premiums for beneficiaries,” which can easily be seen as a win/ win for enrollees. Do bear in mind, though, that under MA plans, you are not allowed to choose your own physicians. If you have any sort of significant health issue, you may want to be sure that you keep this vital difference concerning these plans in mind. Part D Craig Palosky, the director of communications for the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, passed on word that the studies they’ve conducted have produced some interesting results. Between the years 2006 and 2010, an average of just 13 percent (or one in eight enrollees) decided to actually change their Part D – or drug coverage – plan. This is interesting, particularly because, as the study shows, those who did decide to voluntarily change plans were more likely to pay premiums which were lower for the upcoming year than those who did not. Though it wasn’t as significant, they were also a little more likely to pay lower out-of-pocket expenses for their prescriptions during the year. With over 35 different plans now available through Part D, it does pay to do some research to try to stretch your dollar a little further. CMS, as a whole, announced that “the average estimated basic Medicare prescription drug premium plan in 2014 is projected to be $31 per month, holding steady for four years in a row.” Additionally, 100 percent of beneficiaries with Part D will be able to access some sort of plan that will bear a lower premium than what they had paid in 2013. Savings can be found in a myriad of different places, as well. For example, the actual Part D deductible itself has dropped from $325 to $310. These tidbits, alone, may make doing your homework a little more worthwhile. Parts A and B As the “Medicare & You” handbook explains it, Part A of Medicare exists to cover home health visits, hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, and hospice care. The Kaiser Foundation determined that this made up 32 percent of benefit

spending in 2012. Part B, on the other hand, covers preventive services, outpatient services, physicians’ visits, and home health visits. Accounting for 19 percent of benefit spending in 2012, cost sharing typically applies for this plan, and those who opted for it had to pay a $137 deductible for 2013. Unfortunately, due to the recent government shutdown, hard data regarding these plans (also referred to as Traditional Medicare) for the upcoming year simply were not available as this issue of Life After 50 went to press, but the information is slated to be available very soon. Bearing in mind the history that both plans have of changing a bit with every passing year, it is highly recommended that those interested in the rates and most current facts keep a watch on the websites of certain agencies like CMS and Medicare until the official figures can be provided. The Affordable Care Act and the Donut Hole “Thanks to the Affordable Care Act,” CMS Administrator, Marilyn Tavenner began, “Medicare remains strong with more benefits, better choices, and lower costs to beneficiaries.” But does the data match the sentiment? In a word, yes. CMS studies have shown that Medicare Advantage premiums have actually gone down 9.8 percent. Not only that, but the oft-dreaded “donut hole” – the colorful phrase adopted in reference to the rather large coverage gap in Plan D options – has been steadily shrinking since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was implemented. You must pay for 100 percent of the cost of your drugs until the $310 deductible for Part D is met. Afterward, the cost drops to 25 percent of the cost of your medications and the plan will cover the rest until what you pay out-of-pocket, combined with what the plans pay, reaches $2,850. This is where the hole starts to suck people in. The good news is that over the past four years, the cost of medications that fall into the realm of the donut hole have dropped at a steady pace, and the trend is continuing. According to reports provided by www.medicare.gov, this upcoming year could see you paying only 47.5 percent of the price of brand-name medications, and just 72 percent of the bill involving any generic prescriptions. By 2020, the donut hole is projected to be a thing of the past, thanks to the ACA. Things For You to Consider Outside of the realm of all of the medical and political jargon, be sure to take a moment to take a full, personal evaluation of yourself and the current state of your health. You may also want to consider any potential shifts that may take place in your overall wellness within the upcoming year. The reason this can prove to be vital is because once you have chosen a plan, that is what you’re going to be stuck with until the next open enrollment period begins. Saving money is always a plus when considering which plans to pick, but don’t let the ever-vital issue of actual health escape you. Also, taking a more active roll in the condition your health is in could prove to benefit you more than any plan available. Healthy eating and regular exercise can not only make you feel better, in general, but it could potentially lead to the elimination of certain medical conditions and, thus, sometimes expensive medications. In Steve Vernon’s “MoneyWatch” segment for CBS News regarding Medicare, he intimated that he has seen many examples of friends who chose to “close the donut hole on their own” by taking better control of their state of health through positive life choices. For Additional Information One thing to bear in mind through all of this is that people who are already enrolled in Medicare do not have to worry about enrolling in the new healthinsurance marketplaces, according to CMS and Secretary Sebelius. The healthinsurance marketplaces are extremely user-friendly and are assembled by insurance providers to greatly reduce the stress that can come with viewing all of the available options. It is described on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services website as “one application, one time, and you and your family can explore every qualified insurance plan in your area, along with $0 premium or lowcost insurance programs you qualify for.” Additionally, www.cms.gov has a wealth of information on almost all aspects of Medicare, so giving the website a good look could save a lot of trouble and research time in itself. A number of services can be easily navigated on the website www.medicare.gov. From figuring out your own Medicare costs to being able to sign up or change your plans without having to leave your home, this site can make this process much simpler. If you feel uncomfortable going through the internet to set everything up or if you just need additional assistance not provided on the website, then representatives are available to help via telephone at (800) 633-4227. Studying your 2014 “Medicare & You” handbook (available online at www.medicare.gov/ pubs/pdf/10050.pdf) is highly recommended if you have any confusion about the basics of care. For a more in-depth level of assistance, you can also get one-onone counseling assistance via the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (or SHIP), and you can find out just how this is done at www.medicare.gov/contacts/ organization-search-criteria.asps.✦

SCAN HEALTH PLAN “Covered California” is the name of the healthcare exchange in the Golden State and it just opened for business on October 1. Of course, with open enrollment for Medicare kicking off at the same time, you may have thought an exchange would be an option for you. The fact is, if you have Medicare, the exchange is not for you. The tips can help alleviate some of the stress associated with the additional activities and

changes in routine at this time of year. While being with loved ones we don’t get to see on a regular basis throughout the year can be heartwarming, it can also be heartbreaking. The holiday season may be one of the few times families get together and realize their elderly loved ones are no longer able to live independently, are in trouble and in need of immediate help. Adult children who don’t live nearby often come home to find holiday heartbreak with deteriorating relatives they aren’t prepared to handle. While this can be devastating, it should also be an opportunity for family members to gather around the table to have a frank and open discussion to map out a plan to care for their aging relative. To help you identify warning signs that an elderly parent or family member may not be able to continue to live independently, Senior Helpers, one of the largest in-home senior-care companies in the nation with highly trained caregivers specializing in dementia and Alzheimer’s care, has compiled a list of signs you should be looking for. “During this holiday season, thousands of adult children will be shocked to come home to fine their elderly relatives lethargic and forgetful. They’ll see a messy house, bills piling up, and the joy of the season clouded with the realization that their loved ones are struggling and can no longer make it alone,â€? says Peter Ross, CEO and co-founder of Senior Helpers. “This is the time to map out a plan for aging relatives and that plan should include hiring caregivers who can help ease the burden for families.â€? 10 WARNING SIGNS A LOVED ONE NEEDS HELP During this holiday season, if you are visiting with your parents or other elderly relatives you don’t see on a regular basis, be attuned to signs that they may be in need of help. These signs include: ÂŞ *

COMPILED BY MAX ANDREWS

This month begins the annual ritual of families gathering together, from near and far, to celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa or Festivus. During these gatherings, most everyone is conscientiously aware of the safety of infants, toddlers and young children. However, there are other family members whose safety also needs to be taken into consideration during these celebrations – the elderly and pets. When it comes to our older family members, even if their health is good, they may have eyesight, mobility and balance issues that should be kept in mind, especially with the use of holiday decorations and extra electrical cords. Affordable Veterinary Surgery and Dental Care (www.helpinghandsvetva.com). “These latent hazards could derail a family’s holiday season if their pets become ill as a result of these hidden perils.” Pasternak’s list of prospective risks include: ª Decorations – While holiday decorations can make a home feel more festive, they can be tantalizing traps for pets. Pet owners should keep decorations and ornaments higher up on trees, so they are not consumed by pets. If a pet decides the colorful garland or tree trim might make a tasty snack, they can and will get stuck in your pet’s intestines, necessitating immediate surgical removal. Moreover, exposed cords from electric lights can cause electrocution or oral burns if chewed. ª Gift Wrap – When it’s time to pull all the gifts out of hiding to be wrapped, take care that your pet isn’t in the room as you spread out all the wrapping paper, bows and ribbons. If a cat should starting gnawing on the ribbon, it will literally “stitch” the cat’s intestines together as it is being passed through the gut. Surgery is one holiday gift you don’t want to give your family pet. ª Holiday Feast – While turkey and ham make up the majority of traditional holiday meals, turkey and ham bones can become lodged in a pet’s intestines if swallowed in large pieces. Also remember, dried fruits, especially raisins, are highly, and often fatally, toxic to dogs. ª Flowers – The poinsettias many choose to use as holiday centerpieces are also toxic to most household pets if they are chewed and swallowed in large enough quantities. The level of toxicity is completely proportionate to the size and weight of your pet, but instead of doing the math on that equation, it’s better to choose other types of floral arrangements that don’t endanger your pets. “The holidays should be a time for fun, not an unscheduled trip to the animal hospital,” Pasternak added. “If something does happen, don’t hesitate to take your pet to the nearest animal hospital, and know that if you come to ours, we work with our pet owners on affordable payment structures in emergency cases. But we’d rather not see you this season. The best holiday gift you could give your pets is a hazard-free household, so they can enjoy the warmth and joy of your celebrations safely and soundly.”✦

I

t’s a beautiful Saturday morning and the Glendale YMCA is abuzz with activity. Folks of all ages, in every imaginable (and, in some cases, unimaginable) workout ensembles are arriving in droves to take part in one of the organization’s various fitness programs. While the definition of “hubbub” is being made manifest in the facility’s lobby, just off the entranceway, an otherwise undistinguished door serves as a portal into a world far removed from the comings and goings of the scurrying fitness fanatics. It is a world in which the aroma of lilac blends with jasmine, where multicolored sequined throws drape just about anything that is drapeable, and where the soft glow of lamps reflects in the sequins and mirrored wall art. It is there, within this sanctum of sparkling serenity, snuggled into a plush couch adorned with zebra-striped throw pillows, that you’ll find Darcel, the curator of this comforting cocoon of tranquility. “Everyone comes into my office to find a little peace during their day,” says Darcel who serves as the Y’s dance director. “I’ve created this to be a place that is peaceful and restful. Even my supervisor comes in just to get her time to sit and talk and share and spend time in an environment that is beautiful and peaceful. In today’s world, with all the craziness and everyone pulling at you, just think of how wonderful it would be if everyone made it a point to try to do something to bring a sense of peace and serenity and joy to our workplace or our schools.” While peace and serenity may be what Darcel is providing in her office, on this Saturday morning, within the hour, three floors above her oasis, she will be offering something very different as she takes a class of women through a rigorous hour of dance to the pulsating sound of old school disco. This Saturday morning scenario, while similar to dance classes taking place at fitness centers throughout California and the U.S., is different for the women who are shadowing the choreographed calisthenics of the woman conducting the class. To be sure, the nation has its share of qualified dance instructors, but the women in this class are the only ones working out with an icon of dance who gained fame in the 1980s as the principal dancer on the hit television show “Solid Gold.” GOLDEN SEASONS PAST “Solid Gold,” produced by Brad Lachman Productions, which also brought American viewers “Star Search,” debuted on September 13, 1980. During its eight-year run, the show would be hosted by various entertainers including singers Dionne Warwick, Andy Gibb and Marilyn McCoo, Los Angeles radio personality Rick Dees, Nina Blackwood who was one of MTV’s original VJs, and talk show host Arsenio Hall. Like its predecessors – from “Shindig” and “American Bandstand” to “In Concert and “The Midnight Special” – “Solid Gold” featured the performance of songs that were topping the charts. What set “Solid Gold” apart from those other shows was a group of dancers who performed to the top ten hits of each week. While the show’s premiere included eight dancers, they were soon pared down to four regulars who made up the Solid Gold Dancers – Deborah Jennsen, Paula Beyers, Alexander Cole, and Darcel Wynne. Using just her first name, Darcel appeared on the show from 1980 to 1984, took a one-year hiatus, and then rejoined the roster for the 1985-‘86 season. Filling the role of the troupe’s principal dancer, by her final season she was as well-known as the show’s hosts for providing the countdown recaps at the end of each show. After leaving “Solid Gold” in 1986, Darcel continued her career on Broadway appearing in “Xanadu,” “The Great White Hope,” “Mame,” “Scrooge,” “The Last Two Married Couples,” “Night Shift,” “Funny Girl” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” While Darcel was advancing her career on the stages of New York’s Great White Way, her husband, Glenn Leonard, of the legendary Motown group, The Temptations, felt a calling to the ministry and Darcel soon joined him. Establishing a dance ministry, Darcel provided the choreography on numerous holiday television specials produced by the Trinity Broadcasting Network and became known as “The Mother of Praise Dance.” “When we first began our ministry, I looked around at the people who could preach and the people who could teach and I wondered where I fit in, because all I could do was dance,” says Darcel. “I couldn’t see how my dancing could be used as a ministry. But as time went by, I kept hearing the Lord tell me that dancing was my talent and eventually He showed me that I was to use my dance to help people. I began to teach dance all over the country and all over the world. Through dance, I established so many relationships with people and was able to help them, not just by learning to use their bodies, but also their minds and souls to find peace and joy.” DARCEL’S CURRENT SEASON Today, at the age of 60, the mother of two adult children and a recent grandmother, Darcel is an accomplished choreographer, dance and fitness instructor, author, producer and motivational speaker. An advocate for using dance as a medium of therapy, inspiration, transformation and empowerment for women of all ages, she is the director of Funk Fusion, a unique dance company featuring women who are 40 and older whom she calls her “seasoned beauties.” She is the author of the book “Darcel Solid Gold” (Xlibris Corporation, 2009), a candid account of her early life, her work on “Solid Gold,” her marriage to Leonard which, after 30 years, ended in divorce, and how she has used dance to heal the wounds of sexual assault and domestic violence to achieve happiness. Along with her work at the Glendale YMCA, she also teaches at the La Cañada YMCA and to children at a performing arts school.➤

A PROMISE MADE “My life, as everyone’s life, has always been a series of new beginnings,” says Darcel. “Our lives are a series of seasons – things ending and new things beginning. I have never been one to dwell on the endings. I’ve always been the type who is looking forward to the new beginnings.” A devout believer that a positive attitude is the most important thing to leading a life of happiness, Darcel says she has no other choice than to be happy every day. It was a promise she made to her mother. “Just before my mom passed she asked me to promise her that I would be happy,” Darcel explains. “Being happy in life was extremely important to her. So, from that day on, I made a decision – anything that didn’t make me happy could no longer stay in my life or come into my life. I actually sat down and made a list of all the things that didn’t make me happy or didn’t bring joy into my life – all the things that had to go. From the day I did that, I have gotten up every day with joy. I appreciate life. I’m grateful for the good things that have happened to me and the wonderful people in my life that I dearly love and that dearly love me.” Harboring a deep desire to continue to help people after leaving the ministry, Darcel says she has made it her life’s work to help others achieve the same happiness she enjoys.

and have fun and a great time. It’s such a beautiful thing. I even have one seasoned beauty who is 85!”

“When I left the ministry, I never left God,” she says. “And, as the years have gone by, He has led me to the place where I can teach dance to help women embrace the beauty that is within them no matter what they have been through and no matter what their age. It’s about feeling good about yourself. That is the same message of my book. So many women go through bad things in life. I felt I wanted to share my story, of what I went through and how I came out on the other side; that coming out of the bad times, no matter how bad they are, is possible.” Darcel says she feels a maternal care for the women she works with. “When I was on ‘Solid Gold,’ I was like a mother to the other dancers,” she says. “I feel the same way now, even with women who are old enough to be my mother. The women I work with are very special to me. They aren’t taking my dance classes because they are trying to be something in show business. They just want to have fun and feel good about themselves. I have my seasoned beauties outfitted in costumes and do choreographed numbers at shows we do as fundraisers. They aren’t professional dancers. They just love having the chance to perform

“I’ve learned to put myself on pause before doing certain things, saying something that may be hurtful to someone or getting upset about something that I could have just let pass,” she says. “I make pausing a big part of my daily life today. Being able to do that comes with the wisdom I didn’t have when I was younger.” Along with the many things she has accomplished in her life, Darcel is most proud of fulfilling the promise she made to her mom. “I am happy!” she proclaims with a laugh. “If I died today, I’d be fine with it, because I’ve had a great life and have people in my life who are gifts. I’m no different than anyone else. I’ve had some very difficult times – bad times – but only as I’ve gotten older have I come to have the wisdom to see that all things really do work together for good if you’ll just get out of the way and let it happen the way it is meant to be. It’s just like in nature – every season – good ones, bad ones – they each prepare us for the next season.”✦

A PROMISE KEPT While Darcel preaches that the gospel of happiness can be found through approaching life with a grateful, loving and positive attitude, she knows that another vital part of being happy comes from being healthy. “I, of course, get a great workout by teaching my classes each week, and I also work out with weights and sometimes just do some walking,” she says. “As for eating, I’m one of those people who eats very light during the week and then treats myself on weekends. From Friday to Sunday, I don’t deprive myself of anything. I love my bread and my burgers,” she continues with a laugh. “I love barbeque, Margaritas, French fries, hot dogs, tacos. I love Mexican food and I make great sweet potato pie. I really enjoy what I eat on the weekends, because I look forward to it all week. I’ve found if you completely deprive yourself of things, it doesn’t work – you just want them more.” As for the new season of life she has recently begun – the start of her seventh decade – Darcel says she has embraced getting older with the wisdom that comes with the passing of time.

A POETIC PILGRIMAGE TO THE SOUTHWESTERN COAST OF WALES Tracing the life and times of Dylan Thomas on the 100th anniversary of his birth By Ed Boitano, Life After 50 Travel Editor | Photos by Deb Roscamp

I

f Wales is known for one thing, it is for its production of artists. Actors Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheehan all hailed from the Southwest Coast of Wales, almost within walking distance of one another’s birthplaces in the seaside town of Swansea, a two-hour train ride from London. No artist, however, commands a deeper place in a Walesian’s heart than poet and writer, Dylan Thomas. THE BACK STORY Next year will mark the passing of a century since Dylan Thomas appeared on this Earth for what would be a short and complicated life. Born into a middle-class family in Swansea, Wales on October 27, 1914, his father, a failed poet and schoolteacher, insisted that only English be spoken in the home and that his son have access to his grand library. Thus, his education began. The adolescent Dylan wrote prolifically and enjoyed early success by having his first poem published in his school’s magazine. He moved often throughout his brief life and his work conveyed a unique bond with the people he encountered and the places on the Southwest Coast of Wales he called home: Swansea, Ceredidion, Carmarthenshire and Laugharne, where he spent the last four years of his life with his wife, Caitlin, and their three children. The author of the play, “Under Milk Wood,” and some of his most popular poems ever written such as “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” – a prelude to his father’s death – “And Death Shall Have No Dominion,” “Fern Hill,” “The Hunchback in the Park” and “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog,” his work took many forms, including scripts for radio broadcasts, plays, short stories and films. While he is best known for his poetry, unlike most poets,

Thomas was internationally famous in his own lifetime. This led to speaking engagements in which he did readings of his writings along with the work of others. As with so many artists, he was, and continues to be, an enigma who left the world with many unanswered questions and speculations about his private life. Was he a drunkard, a hopeless debtor, an undiagnosed diabetic, or just an eternal adolescent who relied on the support of friends, family and strangers? One thing that is known for sure is that on November 2, 1953, after doing a reading in New York, he consumed 18 glasses of whiskey at the White Horse Tavern. Seven days later, the 39-year-old Thomas died at a local hospital. Following his death, his body was taken back to Wales for burial in the village churchyard at Laugharne, where his final resting place is signified by a simple white cross. FOLLOWING IN THE POET’S FOOTSTEPS A visit to the southwestern coast of Wales offers the opportunity to see where Thomas was born, worked and has been laid to rest. The upcoming 2014 celebration of his 100th birthday will see the region offer many special events and tours. Along with these observances, which you can learn of at www.dylanthomas100.org, a pilgrimage to Southwestern Wales to pay tribute to the late poet would not be complete without seeing the following: His Birthplace Thomas was born in a home on Cwmdonkin Drive in the Uplands district of Swansea, where he lived until age four. Lovingly restored by Annie and Jeff Haydn, it is open for tours and also provides a great example of a middle-class Welsh home circa 1914.

Swansea City Centre The Dylan Thomas Centre offers a permanent exhibition of the poet’s life and work. Look for his statue in the adjacent plaza. Laugharne Overlooking the picturesque River Taf Estuary are Thomas’ boathouse and writing shed, where he wrote many of his major works. Make sure, while you are there, to do as Thomas did on a daily basis – have a pint at the Browns Hotel and Public House. Tenby Dylan and Caitlin were first introduced and often visited this picturesque seaside town. Take the boat to Caldey Island, populated by a Cistercian Monastic Order, and sample their island-made perfumes and chocolates. They make perfect gifts. The Dylan Thomas Trails Spread across the southwestern part of the country, the Wales Coast Path showcases quaint small towns, and the remarkable land and seascapes which inspired Thomas. The Gower Peninsula features the fishing village of Mumbles and the stunning beach of Rhossili, where he would camp and often walk the cliffs of Gower. Two of his best-loved short stories, “Extraordinary Little Cough” and “Who Do You Wish Was With Us?” are set in the ethereal Rhossili. If you’d like to hike further, the 870-mile-long Wales Coast Path spans the length of the Welsh coastline. WHERE TO STAY My recommendations are: the Dragon Hotel in Swansea www.dragon-hotel.co.uk, Browns Hotel in Laugharne www.browns-hotel.co.uk and St. Brides Hotel and Spa in Saundersfoot, which is but a stone’s throw from Tenby www.stbridesspahotel.com ✦ For further information on visiting Wales, click on www.visitwales.com or www.walescoastpath.gov.uk. The Bookworm’s Best A Life After 50 book review by “The Bookworm” Terri Schlichenmeyer Dallas 1963 by Bill Minutaglio and Steven L. Davis

L

et’s say you want to stir up a little something. Start with three cups of quiet collaboration. Add in a dash of rumor; a teaspoon each of anti-Semitism, segregation, and Red Scare; and a tablespoon of divisive politics. Stir in money – lots of it – and bake in a 10-gallon hat for three-and-ahalf years. Yields: heated arguments and mouthfuls of hate. And as you’ll see in the new book “Dallas 1963” by Bill Minutaglio and Steven L. Davis, that’s a recipe for changing history. When the holiday cards arrived at the homes of Dallas’ “most influential residents,” there was confusion – and consternation. Signed “Best – Jack,” the cards featured then-Senator John Kennedy and his family on the front. The assumed message was that Kennedy would run for president, which concerned Dallas’ powerbrokers – including the world’s richest man, a minister, and a newspaperman. It was January of 1960. Dallas had been steadfastly ignoring Brown v. Board of Education and other unpopular Washington edicts; a liberal Democrat in office was unthinkable. As for the Dallas powerbrokers, they would be firmly supporting then-Vice President Richard Nixon in the upcoming election. However, best-laid plans can be changed by the smallest events. When a Texas politician gathered protestors for a Dallas appearance by Kennedy’s running mate, Lyndon Johnson, just before

A Look Back

the election, violence erupted and national cameras captured normally genteel Southern women spitting at the vice-presidential candidate and his frightened wife. Horrified on-the-fence voters nationwide cast their ballots accordingly. But hatred for Kennedy wasn’t limited to Dallas. Southerners widely detested his stance on race relations. Conservatives feared his Catholicism would make him “more devoted to the Pope than to the American Constitution.” Many thought he was weak, since he seemed reluctant to utilize nuclear weapons against Russia. Those and other issues plagued Kennedy’s time in the White House, but he was determined to run for reelection. He and the Democrats knew, however, that winning Texas in 1964 had to start in Dallas, so they sent Adlai Stevenson there in October of 1963, to pave the way. But after witnessing riots and being spat upon, Stevenson privately questioned Kennedy’s plans to visit Dallas saying he was “very concerned about Kennedy’s safety in the city.” In light of the recent and ongoing events in 2013 Washington, I found “Dallas 1963” to be doubly interesting: deep political divisiveness; dicey overseas relations; and a president who wants social change, causing accusations of lack of concern for the country’s well-being. Sound familiar? But why was JFK assassinated in Dallas, of all places? Authors Bill Minutaglio and Steven L. Davis take a stab at answering that question, as they look at the emotions, beliefs, and social mores of the times. This narrative starts in 1960 and ends with a bullet – and, even though we know what happened, getting to that last point is squirmy: my heart pounded. I wanted to yell, “WATCH OUT!” When you can immerse yourself like that in a book, it’s always a good sign – which is why I recommend this one. For fans of politics, history, or anyone desiring to somehow mark this inauspicious anniversary, “Dallas 1963” has the ingredients for a very absorbing read. “Dallas 1963” by Bill Minutaglio and Steven L. Just a Thought Before We Go “I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual. O how I laugh when I think of my vague indefinite riches. No run on my bank can drain it, for my wealth is not possession, but enjoyment.”

T

he 22nd day of this month will mark the passing of 50 years since President John F. Kennedy fell victim to an assassin’s bullets in Dallas, Texas. Just five months earlier, on June 8, the nation’s 35th president made one of his last stops in Southern California, attending a Democratic State Central Committee Women’s Division breakfast at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. Today, a half-century later, the Hollywood Palladium still stands at 6215 Sunset Boulevard. Originally funded by Los Angeles Times publisher Norman Chandler, the Art Deco theatre was designed by architect Gordon Kaufmann, who also designed the Hoover Dam and the Los Angeles Times building in Downtown Los Angeles. The Palladium opened on October 31, 1940 featuring Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra and an up-and-coming vocalist named Frank Sinatra. Completely renovated in 2008, The Palladium is currently owned by Live Nation, which stages regular concerts at the venue.
