Lord Unless the
Builds the House
they labour in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain”.
Psalm 127:1
I
n these uncertain times where the numbers of those affected by the pandemic have risen dramatically, we need to again focus on what the Lord is doing at this time. When we are forced to stay home, work from home and home school our children because the schools have closed, we need to again look to the Lord and become aware that if He is not building our homes, all our efforts are in vain. In the same way, if the Lord is not watching over the safety of our city, the watchmen watch in vain. If we say, “I can’t handle it anymore”, then our dependence on God has changed and we have lost our trust in the One who watches over us. Without God, the building of a home and the safety of a town are simply and ultimately not possible and all our efforts will be in vain. These two things are most important in the sustaining of our direct safety concerns. God is the one who watches over our homes as well as our city. Jesus wants to be our safe haven in the storms of life. He is in the boat; He wants us to recognize His presence and power in these troubling days. Psalm 127 continues, “It is in vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so He gives His beloved rest.” There is a temptation to save ourselves by our own efforts in getting up early, sitting up late, working our fingers to the bone, worrying about ourselves. It would still all be in vain!
The awful reality is that none of these workaholic pursuits will ever give us the sustaining joy and fulfillment that God desires to freely give us. Not only does He provide for proper seasons of rest, He also provides for us while we are resting: He affords physical and emotional recovery; spiritual renewal and vision. No wonder that so many Christians are collapsing under the weight of such an enslaving lifestyle. God wants us to reign, the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in bringing down strongholds. We are challenged to put on our brakes in the global rat race. We need to trust God to provide all that we will ever need in these days. God says in Jeremiah 29:11 “I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to not harm you but to give you a future and a hope”. We as the body of believers need to stay connected with our heavenly Father and each other, This is the time to bear one another’s burdens like never before. We are becoming an army of love, finding practical ways to bless one another. His perfect love will cast out all fear. We are praying for each other like never before and technology gives us options to stay connected. The people of God are victorious and moving forward as one, looking up to the author and finisher of our faith, let us stay home, stay safe, stay connected, for His promise is to give His beloved rest.
