CyberWise Guide to

What is Twitter?

What is Glogster EDU? If you’ve watched the CyberWise Guide to GlogsterTwitter EDU video in the “CyberTools4Schools” section of www.cyberwise.org, then you already know that a Glog, short for graphical blog, is an interactive multimedia image that looks like a poster, but allows readers to interact with the content. Twitter is an online “mini-blogging” (aka microblogging) communications tool that lets you send and receive messages of up to 140 characters instantly. These messages are called tweets; here is an example of one from our Twitter username, @bcyberwise.

When Twitter first launched in July 2006, it was more like instant messaging with a mega-phone that allowed people to send short mundane messages (“tweets”) such as “I just ate breakfast” or “headed out to the store” to let folks know what they were doing at a certain exact moment. Other than young adopters of social networking technologies such as teens, most adults were turned off by its “silliness” and the growth of Twitter stalled. Despite this slow start, Twitter eventually established itself as a useful, powerful tool to create and share information for individuals, groups, large conventional news organization such as CNN, Reuters, The New York Times and global outlets such as the BBC and International aid organizations. It has mobilized communication for social movements such as the Egyptian uprising in early 2011, and many others before and since.

4

Twitter has quickly gained worldwide popularity, with 200 million users as of 2011 According to Katie Stanton, vice president of international strategy at Twitter, here are now more than 200 million Twitter accounts worldwide…more than 70% of Twitter traffic comes from outside the US, and roughly 25% of all tweets come from Japan. (Halliday, 2011].

So What Does This Mean for Me? At first glance, it may be tempted to write Twitter off as impractical and frivolous and be wondering, “How can such a silly communication tool possibly be useful in the classroom or at home?” or “It seems like a lot of work to learn and use for very little return.” Don’t worry. That’s the exact reason we have created this companion “Cyberwise Guide to Twitter.” We hope it alleviate your fears and help you understand how and why Twitter can be a powerful tool for learning! Also known as Glogster for Education , Glogster EDU is an interactive online teaching and learning tool application that goes a step further and brings your school into your students’ world online. Glogster EDU gives teachers the ability to create accounts for their classrooms. Using their Glogster EDU accounts, teachers can assign to and manage individual accounts for their students. It is offered on a private and safe platform where teachers can directly monitor and control all of the activities of their learners that is monitored directly by teachers. Although Edu Glogster is free, you can purchase a premium version that includes more features. It costs $11.95/month per teacher, $99/year per teacher for up to 200 students, or you can get a multi-licence purchase for a school district (http://edu.Glogster.com/product-information).

WHAT MAKES GLOGSTERTWITTER EFFECTIVE?

When multi-modal media platforms like GlogsterTWITTER EDU are used in education, students can amalgamate their creative ideas, map their stories out and create them in a digital media form. This allows kids to interact with the material they are learning as well as converse with their peers about how they merged the different elements (oral, visual, text and movement) to create a media literacy vehicle. This also holds true for extracurricular projects or for kids/teachers who just want to have fun, to communicate and share their feelings in a more expressive, interactive way. Relationships/Sense of Community While the user’s profile may provide some insight about the person posting a Glog, it is all based on the user’s discretion of what to reveal or not reveal. As with all computer-mediated communications (CNCCMC) there are costs and benefits to this growing form of media expression. Many of the Glogs are posted by minors who may be tempted to display their photos in a provocative way, enhance the expression of illicit behavior such as excessive cursing, or discuss topics that are not generally approved when adults, parents or teachers are around. It is for this very reason that the integration of teaching media literacy, cyber civics and cyber ethics is so critical. (download the “Cyberwise Guide to Digital Citizenship" video found in the CoolTools4Schools section of our website, www.cyberwise.org for more info). By using multimedia platforms such as GlogsterTWITTER EDU in the classroom, the ability to infiltrate and teach concepts related to these literacy concepts becomes more organic and simplified and effective. Because Glogs are scalable, they are a benefit to all ages of students, and especially teens, who need an outlet to express their fears and joys and to explore their personal and social identities without disapproval from the physical outside world.

21ST CENTURY SKILLS AND INNOVATION: GLOGSTERTWITTER IN THE CLASSROOM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiS-Mdm3ZXc

Eileen Dougherty, a fourth grade teacher in Watertown, Massachusetts, collaborated with the school librarian and a computer teacher to develop a GlogsterTWITTER EDU (2010) program for her Social Studies class. The goal was to teach children about the history and geography of individual state in the United States of America in an interactive, fun and memorable way. Part of the research project included utilizing tools provided by GlogsterTWITTER EDU, where each child created a virtual poster for the state they had been assigned. Each of the posters werewas supplemented with written reports and physical textual projects. This multimodal media experience taught them not only how to create an electronic poster and personal viewpoint about the state they were researching, but other skills as well. Through the navigation of resource sites such as GlogsterTWITTER, the World Book Online encyclopedia and open source media sites, they developed information literacy skills on core subjects such as geography and history; they gained digital information and communication literacy skills such as saving, copying and uploading photos and videos; utilized creativity and innovation through their independent production and integration of various media elements to tell their story; and they received invaluable collaboration and communication experience through interconnections, the sharing of information and feedback and support, and through the presentation of their final projects to their classmates (GlogsterTWITTER EDU, 2010). Projects like these can promote an increased “knowledge development among learners, from superficial to deep content understanding, to new perspectives on learning goals, and their interrelationships” (Greenhow et al, 2009, p. 251). 10

NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF USING GLOGSTERTWITTER (from GlogginNoggins) Source: https://sites.google.com/site/glogginnoggins/pros-and-cons-of- glogsterTWITTER/pros-cons-of-glogsterTWITTER-part-2

Network Restrictions: Many school districts prohibit sites like GlogsterTWITTER because they are associated with social networks. Technology specialists and administrators would have to allow the school district to lift a restriction ban. In some districts, it may be next to impossible to convince administrators of the educational benefits.

Price for Better Features: While GlogsterTWITTER and GlogsterTWITTER Edu are free, GlogsterTWITTER Edu Premium comes with a price: $11.95 per teacher for a single license, good for one month; $99 for one teacher, a single license, good for a year or $8.25 a month; $2 per student for a school license, per year. Edu Premium allows more classroom management options, more student members, class messaging, unlimited future updates, drawing over Glogs, extra graphics, no advertising, and document attachment. [Note: these rates are subject to change at the discretion of www.edu.glogsterTWITTER.com]

User Friendliness: GlogsterTWITTER is not an extremely complex program, but video embedding, as well as some of the other features can be difficult. I would not recommend the program to teachers who lack technological skills.

Time: Creating a Glog can be time consuming, especially if you are new to the program. A GlogsterTWITTER lesson may take several days and several hours of work time. With teachers and students pressed for time, this could cause added challenges and stress!

Responsibility: Students must be responsible, put forth effort, time, and good decision making when working with GlogsterTWITTER. Students must also use restraint when commenting on Glogs of their peers.

Server Overload: Not all school districts or homes have servers which can handle the load from GlogsterTWITTER; server crashes or a slow network could make students and teachers very frustrated.

Tech Support: GlogsterTWITTER does not come with a manual. Members must consult the “Community Support” page for help. The support page is a blog with questions and answers from other members. Users may struggle when trying to solve a specific technical issue.

SCRIPT FOR “THE CYBERWISE GUIDE TO TWITTER” VIDEO FOUND IN THE “CoolTools4Schools” SECTION OF Www.CyberWise.Org It’s tough keeping kids engaged today. They’re used to communicating and multitasking on computers, and smart phones, and netbooks and more. Even teachers are distracted with all these new gadgets. So when it comes to creating classroom projects, asking young people to use these tools that result in static posters like this, might be considered a bit, well… boring. Fortunately today there is a whole new way to erase, paste and cut. It’s called TWITTER Edu. So what is a “glog”? Well, take the g in graphic and the log in blog, and you’ve got . . glog. Short for graphical blog. The glog replaces the old-fashioned poster with an interactive, multi-media image that lets the 21st century student interact with its content. With TWITTER, students and educators create posters that integrate graphics, text, images, video, and sound. This lets students create and present their work across several mediums. For example, in this project on California missions, students worked together to integrate text, visuals, and sounds to illustrate the topic. They also uploaded images of their handmade projects, showing off their work to parents and teachers who could access the project online by going to the TWITTER link. So stop being boring and help your students integrate traditional projects with 21 st century tools like TWITTER. It’s online, its free, and best of all, its easy to use. To be CyberWise about how and why TWITTER will work for you, go to our website to download your copy of the CyberWise Guide to TWITTER.
