Editor’s Note
This is the first edition of “The Lengua Inglesa Chronicles,” a newsletter made by students from the major whose intention is to inform the whole community about what is going on with the people from Lengua Inglesa, not only inside the school but outside too. As students, we want to catch up with the important events and news that surround our school. But we also want students to get more involved with the school and to be aware of what is happening here. We look forward to presenting information the way we as students would like to read it. This inaugural edition is a special one, as it reports on the main events at the major throughout the August-December semester. We dedicate this newsletter to all the people who made it possible especially to the members of the Lengua Inglesa community who made news during this period, to Frank Malgesini for the idea behind The Lengua Inglesa Chronicles, to Cecilia Villarreal, Claudia Contreras, and Lizette Flores, for their valuable collaboration, and to the Literal Ink staff and all the students who participated in collecting, writing, and editing the news. We hope you enjoy reading it as we enjoyed doing it. LI chronicles is not responsible for the opinions of the people included here. These opinions are quoted and reported as received, and do not

AFTER THE TRADITIONAL Carrera de novatos that is held every year before the competition. From the men, Humberto Ulises Paredes Pérez from first semester of Lengua Inglesa came in second place. And from the women, Yolanda Anahy Saldaña Varela and Paola Soledad Márquez Silva won the second and third place, respectively. Back to the gastronomic competition, students worked very hard to get their stands ready with decoration, and, of course, to prepare the traditional Mexican food that each group had selected. Each group presented their dish and told us a little about the history behind it.

“On November 21st I had the opportunity to present volume 7.0 of Literal Ink. I had been a long and gratifying year that had its culmination on that morning at Cine Club of our school. Being the editor of literal ink was an incredible experience, not just because I had the chance to interact with the students of our major but also for all the new knowledge I acquired during the process of publication.
I had to learn about software, design, edition, and I had to be always thinking in my mind what the final product was going to look like. And finally after several weeks printing at Unidad Editorial with berto Carmona, we had the volume ready

Gerardo Valenzuela Defying Gravity T
he 11° International Film Festival in Mo-
relia was opened with a Google Hang-
out in which Gerardo Valenzuela Miranda, from 5th semester, was able to talk to Alfonso Cuarón. Since he was a child, Gerardo has always been fond of the Seventh Art but he feels a special admiration for Mexican film-makers. His adventure at the Film Festival started on March 2013 when he watched the first trailer of Gravity, the movie directed by Cuarón. He found it very interesting so he did some research about it and the early reviews were very favorable. He was amazed by the way Cuarón invented technology and used machines to shoot this movie. By September, Gerardo had already decided to go to the festival which Cuarón would attend for the third time, so he started organizing the trip. In October, while he was looking at some information about the festival he saw an advertisement for a contest. The participants had to send a question for Alfonso Cuarón and a picture in which they were defying gravity. Gerardo talked to two of his photographer friends about his ideas. He wanted to get on the roof of a house and to be floating somehow, but he

We loved so much our classes at the OSU because our professors were very nice, they were always very supportive and made their classes totally enjoyable and useful. Besides, they congratulated us a lot because of our knowledge in the field; they were very surprised by our performance in the classroom and we owe this to Lengua Inglesa and our professors. They also encouraged us to apply for scholarships at the OSU, they told us what it was to study a

In this trip we had the chance to be independent, to grow a little bit or maybe a lot in many aspects of our lives, to put into practice what we have learned. It also planted in our hearts the seed of desire to grow, learn and excel every day. It was a life-changing experience. We are very thankful with all the people that made this possible, to our principal M.E. Luis Alberto Fierro Ramírez, to Fátima Guzmán, to our professors César Eduardo Gutierrez Jurado, Io Maura Medina and Joy Armendariz; and to all the people that helped us in any way. We just hope we can do better in our society through the knowledge we have acquired and through constant self-improvement.

For many years, faculty members and students of Lengua Inglesa have participated in regional conferences of the American Sociological Association in both the United States and Canada. The following statement is an
extract from the essay Berkeley 2013, Up, Down and Around; An account of the California Sociological Association written by Ms. Armendariz, in which she explains how the trip was a memorable experience that changed her in many ways. “The meeting topics covered a wide range of affairs including current issues in Latino research, globalization, global government, religion and marriage, violence and inequality. Before this moment in my life, I’d never considered myself as a sociologist. I never considered myself as anything specific, yet I felt that I was finally on the edge of a discovery that would alter my vision of the world.” The complete essay will be available in the next issue of Literal Ink.

he National Association of University English Professors (ANUPI in Spanish), held its XI International Conference “Building Bridges: Linking Research and Practice in ELT” at the Las Brisas Hotel in Huatulco, Oaxaca from October 24th to 27th, 2013. Four of our professors attended, successfully giving the following conferences: Dr. Angélica Sandoval and M.A. Socorro Cristóforo: “Developing pronunciation awareness through phonological analysis in songs” M.E.S. Lizette Flores: “Appealing to Students for Effective Teaching: Facebook and Memes in the Classroom” Lic. Io Maura Medina: ““Memes in the classroom: Improving ways of communicating with students” ANUPI is a recognized national association that seeks to improve the quality of English teaching through the sharing of knowledge of the people that participate in the International Conference. English professors from around the world (England, USA, Latin America) attend the Conference participating with lectures, conferences, workshops and presentation of posters. Also, ANUPI
provides the opportunity for teachers to find the latest materials for English teaching, as there are representatives of different publishing houses (Helbling languages, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, among others) presenting their newest books. On the closing day of the Conference, ANUPI organizers prepared a raffle in which the participants could have the chance to win prizes such as stuffed animals, t-shirts, coffee cups or, if you were one of the 5 lucky winners, a TESOL membership. Surprisingly enough, two of our teachers were lucky enough to win the TESOL memberships: Io Maura Medina and Lizette Flores, Congratulations!! After the raffle and the closing lecture, the ANUPI participants enjoyed a dinner party where they had the chance to meet and talk to the other professors in a fun and relaxed environment. She presented two talks related to her research. Dr. Basurto received her doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. In her first talk, “Doing research on EFL in Mexican Schools: what, how, and why,” she described her experiences in the research projects she has been involved in, focusing on the orientation and research approach adopted in these studies. She also talked about the problems that she faced at each stage of the process and the solutions that she found in each case. Her second talk, “Succeeding against all odds: A Narrative of EFL Learning” described her current research project, involving narrative inquiry. She discussed the questions which served as a guide for her research, and reviewed her preliminary results. These talks were very relevant for the Lengua Inglesa major as they made the students and teachers more aware of research and interested them in involving themselves in it, also it was a way to promote the cooperation between our major and similar institutions.

and she had done some presentations about it before.
In current studies, graduates are usually seen as possible funders for their former schools or are studied with statistical purposes, but not with the purpose of establishing a permanent and efficient link with them to see in what ways both the university and the graduates can benefit from each other. Therefore, Lizette’s study focused on finding what needs graduates have and in what ways Lengua Inglesa, FFYL and the UACH could help them in their professional development, in them. The results of M.E.S. Flores study suggest that Lengua Inglesa graduates are interested in having a relationship with their Alma Mater as they hold a deep appreciation of their major.

Minerva Torres: Doctoral Dissertation O
n July 31, 2014, Blanca Minerva Torres Olave, a 2002 graduate of
Lengua Inglesa, successfully defended her doctoral dissertation, STEM Employment in the New Economy: A Labor Market Segmentation Approach, in the school of Education of the University of Arizona. After graduating from Lengua Inglesa, Minerva taught in the major for three semesters before leaving to complete an MA in Higher Education at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Upon Completing her MA, she taught in the Lengua Inglesa again until she left to begin her doctoral work in Tucson, Arizona. Chess Tournament of the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras D
uring the XXXV Humanist Week and the 50th Anniversary of Facultad de Filosofía y Letras as part of Student Council we had the “SAFFyL Student Council Chess Tournament” in the Fall of year 2013. Alejandro Martínez as Captain of the rising Chess Club, he was really concerned with having this tournament; his vision was by having this event we would promote the club and by this we had to make the event open to society in general. We had participations from people from other faculties of the university, such as it was the case of the Faculty of Fine Arts, FACIATEC and even people from Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado de Chihuahua, all students. Of course we also had people from each major of our faculty. The tournament was held for several days and of course we had winners that were prized with books and gifts that had the logo of the Faculty’s 50th Anniversary and the Humanist Week, such objects were cups, pens, etc.
