The designated driver brought him home and thought he would just sleep it off. He didn’t. I don’t even know if you will get this e-mail. My friend is dead, and my dad is probably dead. I am eighteen-years-old. Mercer To: artmurr@yaboo.com From: Mercermur1@yaboo.com Subject: Bear May 17 Dad,

Bear is dead. He choked on his own vomit after passing out from alcohol poisoning. I guess alcohol poisoning can cause problems with breathing and the gag reflex (which prevents choking). He was so drunk that he threw up and basically suffocated. Jesse thought he would be OK – Bear didn’t even seem drunk, but I just researched that a person’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) can continue to rise even while he is passed out. Jesse said he had a bunch of shots before he left the party. I don’t understand. If you are reading this e-mail in heaven, then you already know anyway. So why am I even telling you again? Maybe I need to tell you. Maybe I need to be able to tell someone.

I am scared, Dad. 199
