TODAY’S GAME 2) The game will match two starting quarterbacks who hail from Atlanta, Ga., in Liberty’s Malik Willis and Campbell’s HajjMalik Williams. Both players are talented runners who led their respective teams in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns last season.

STORYLINES

1) Coming off a history-making 2020 season, Liberty will kick off its 2021 campaign with its first-ever matchup against Campbell, Saturday evening at Williams Stadium. 2) Liberty has won 11 consecutive home games at Williams Stadium. A victory today sets a new program record for longest home winning streak. 3) Hugh Freeze will begin his third season at Liberty with his 25th game as the Flames’ head coach. He has coached Liberty to backto-back Cure Bowl victories and the program’s first FBS Top 25 ranking. 4) After producing a program-record 34 TDs (20 passing, 14 rushing) in 2020, Liberty QB Malik Willis appears on numerous preseason watch lists, including the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. 5) Liberty RB Joshua Mack leads active FBS players with 3,636 career rushing yards. He has recorded 18 career 100-yard games, including eight during his two years with the Flames. 6) The Flames return 10 starters from a defensive unit that ranked No. 11 nationally in total defense (317.7 ypg) and No. 22 in scoring defense (20.5 ppg) a season ago. Liberty shut out UMass 45-0 the last time it played at home.

“4 DOWNS” WITH THE CAMELS

1) Saturday will mark the first time Liberty has opened a season against an FCS opponent since 2015 when the Flames earned a 32-13 home win over Delaware State. Campbell is the lone FCS foe on the Flames’ 2021 schedule.

3) Campbell is one of three first-time opponents on Liberty’s 2021 schedule, along with Ole Miss and UAB. Entering this season, football and field hockey are the only two of the Flames’ 20 athletic programs which have never competed against the Camels. Campbell is scheduled to return to Williams Stadium in three years (Nov. 9, 2024). 4) Campbell Head Coach Mike Minter and QB Coach Adam Morris were both part of Turner Gill’s staff at Liberty in 2012. During the 2020 season, all four of Campbell’s games were played against FBS opponents. The Camels went 0-4 and are still in search of their firstever victory over an FBS squad. Campbell is in its fourth year as a Big South Conference member. Liberty played Big South football for the prior 16 seasons (2002-17).

MILESTONE WATCH

12: If Liberty wins today’s game, the Flames will set a program record with their 12th consecutive home victory. The streak began with a 35-17 win over Buffalo on Sept. 14, 2019. The previous record of 11 straight home victories spanned Nov. 4, 2006-Oct. 11, 2008. 50: Saturday will mark the 50th game of Ralfs Rusins’ career at Liberty, which began with a redshirt season in 2015. Thomas Sargeant and DJ Stubbs are also nearing the 50-game milestone. Both players enter the 2021 season with 47 appearances as Flames, with Sargeant having started every one of those 47 contests. 54: QB Malik Willis needs 54 rushing yards to reach 1,000 during his time as a Flame. Saturday will mark his 11th game at Liberty. The last Flame to amass 1,000 rushing yards as a quarterback was 2011 graduate Mike Brown.

WILLIAMS STADIUM CLEAR BAG POLICY CLEAR BAG POLICY

In an effort to enhance fan safety and expedite entrance to Williams Stadium, Liberty University has implemented a security screening process. This includes a clear bag policy that limits the size and type of bag that can be brought into the stadium by fans. The implementation of this measure is intended to enhance public safety while minimizing time spent searching bags at gate security checkpoints, thus easing access into the stadium.

The policy is consistent with the NFL’s current model. Only clear tote bags that do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12” or one-gallon plastic freezer bags will be allowed in Williams Stadium. In addition, small handheld clutch purses no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” will be permitted. Spectators will also be able to carry other items into the stadium, such as binoculars, cameras, and smartphones.

Liberty’s clear bag policy has been in effect since 2016 and will be strictly enforced during the 2021 football season.

PLAYER FEATURE STORY ONE LAST RIDE DJ STUBBS

This is for everyone that helped get me here! Through the blood, sweat, and tears — everything that I’ve been through with my brothers is the reason why I came back. On one hand, I had the dream of pursuing an NFL career staring me right in the face, and on the other, there was an opportunity to return to Liberty for a sixth year for one last ride with my best friends. One last ride with the fellas.

So, while I’m definitely proud of last season, I also know everything starts anew this year. We’re starting from scratch, and I couldn’t be happier to be doing it alongside my brothers on this team.

PUTTING THE DREAM ON HOLD

I always knew there was a chance of me coming back. It was a decision that I ultimately came to for myself. After the season, I got contacted by an agent suggesting I consider declaring for the NFL Draft this year. He told me I’d have a real shot at landing on a team.

One last ride with the best fans in college football.

It wasn’t until I spoke with an NFL liaison that I realized that wasn’t the right move for me. Besides, I was also pretty late in the process at that time.

Our motto this year is to stand firm, be courageous, be strong, and do everything out of love. I’m going to ride with those words until my last snap on that football field. They say “go big or go home,” right?

I’ve dreamed my entire life of making it out and playing in the NFL. It’s the dream of every kid that puts on a helmet. The best part about everything is my family trusted me to make that decision — to stay at college or turn pro.

Being back at school, man, I’d say I’m already home. So, I guess there’s only one thing left to do.

My mom especially wanted to make sure she helped me as much as she could, while also letting me make my own decisions. I really appreciate that.

One last ride with the Flames.

LET’S RUN IT BACK

I’m beyond excited to see what we can do as a team after everything we accomplished last season. That squad did something that I haven’t seen since high school, you know? We won a lot of games! Finishing 10-1 on the season, ending with a No. 17 ranking in the AP Poll and winning a Bowl game — we accomplished things I watched on TV and dreamed about as a kid.

I ultimately decided it was a great idea for me to stay and take advantage of having another year to get it right. I’m always looking to improve myself in everything I do. Be better than I was yesterday, whether that’s on or off the field — that’s how I choose to live my life. Continued on page 9

It was a great accomplishment, but I wouldn’t say it was surprising. I never step onto that field expecting to lose, you know? I go into every season with the belief that we’re going to be a very good team and win games. That’s just my mental approach to everything. But you also learn that winning football games at this level isn’t easy, man. We started out 3-0 in my first year here, and I remember just taking for granted the fact that we were winning. I thought we were going to keep going in that direction, and then we ended the season at 6-5 that year.

PLAYER FEATURE STORY I really want to take it to the next level and show these people what I can do. I want to make it hard for them to keep me off the field. But most of all, I want one last hurrah with my teammates. Just to have another year with my guys is the top reason for me coming back. If I left, I would have never played with these guys again. I’m just eternally grateful to have this one last opportunity to ball out with my brothers — the ones that came in with me and the ones that came after me.

It’s who I am as a person. If I’m succeeding, I want the next person to succeed as well. Why would I want to be the only one succeeding? It even goes back to my desire to play in the NFL. There’s only one reason for that goal and one reason alone: to help my family get their dreams off the ground. My mom wants to have a juice bar back at home, and my brother needs his own shop to go with his tint service. I’m in this for things like that.

FOR EVERYONE THAT BELIEVED

I just want to give back to everybody that helped me along the way — from my family, to my AAU coaches, to my Pop Warner coaches, to my high school coaches, to everybody that ever stood beside me.

It feels good when guys come up to you and tell you how your actions have impacted them in their approach to the game or life. It’s something I never even realized I was doing until it was brought to my attention.

I’m not just doing this for me.

My goal this season is to leave everything on the field and continue paying it forward to younger players on the team.

Housing computer labs, classrooms, lecture halls, and a rooftop terrace, the 4-story DeMoss Hall serves as one of the primary academic buildings on campus. Connected to DeMoss, the Montview Student Union features additional dining options, space for student clubs, student service centers, and a bowling alley, in addition to lounge seating and open common areas.

With the completion of the third Residential Commons in August 2017, these buildings house nearly 3,000 students. Each building features two-person rooms, private bathrooms, on-site laundry, and a coed common area, providing students with comfortable seating and televisions.

The 4-story Jerry Falwell Library is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, providing resources in both traditional and digital formats. Students can study in a variety of reading rooms, group study rooms, multiple balconies and terraces, and a spacious café.

Located across the lawn from the Jerry Falwell Library, the Center for Natural Sciences houses classrooms, an auditorium, and more than 30 laboratories designed for hands-on learning, including an advanced anatomy lab and a cell culture lab. The 4-story building also contains $2 million in equipment, such as a gene sequencer and GC mass spectrometer.

Housing classrooms, a research center, and labs, the 4-story Center for Medical and Health Sciences is home to the College of Osteopathic Medicine and select programs of the School of Health Sciences.

Completed in Fall 2017, the tower is the centerpiece of Liberty’s campus rebuilding. It stands on the north end of campus near The Food Court at Reber-Thomas and houses the John W. Rawlings School of Divinity as well as spaces for special events. The tower also holds the Rawlings Scriptorium, which exhibits a collection of sacred texts, interactive screens, and a life-size replica of the Gutenberg press.

The Center for Music and the Worship Arts is split between two linked 4-story buildings and houses a concert hall capable of seating 1,600 guests. It is located along Liberty’s main academic corridor, across the courtyard from DeMoss Hall and adjacent to the Jerry Falwell Library.

A 78,000-square-foot, 3-story building for the school was completed in 2019. The building includes a 500-seat auditorium, information technology labs, data centers, and the Center for Entrepreneurship. It also has a simulated stock trading room featuring glass walls, New York Stock Exchange display boards, and a real-time ticker.

JERRY PREVO BIO JERRY PREVO An entrepreneur and Baptist minister, Jerry Prevo has been a member of the Liberty University Board of Trustees since 1996 and filled the role of Board Chairman since 2003. He recently retired as the senior pastor of Anchorage Baptist Temple in Anchorage, Alaska, where he served for 47 years. Raised in Tennessee, Prevo graduated from the Baptist Bible College and completed other work at various universities, including the University of Tennessee, Belmont College, and Tennessee Temple. He moved to Alaska in 1971 to take over a small mission work, where he put his entrepreneurial skills into action. Over time, he expanded the church congregation, including the implementation of a bus service to pick up children for Sunday

services and, by extension, their parents. In the mid-1970s, the mission work purchased 20 acres and built a whitesteeple building to hold services, and in 1992, a 43,000-square-foot auditorium was completed. Prevo has witnessed Anchorage Baptist Temple become one of the largest churches in Alaska. The services have drawn an average of more than 2,000 people per week. The church also offers education for preschool through senior high at Anchorage Christian Schools — the largest Christian school in Alaska — and ministers through its television station. Additionally, Prevo is the CEO and chairman of Christian Broadcasting Inc., which he started and now has three stations and two broadcasting towers in Anchorage, Alaska. In 2020, Prevo took on the role of President of Liberty University following Jerry Falwell Jr.’s resignation. In accepting this role, he stepped down as Board Chairman and officially began his new duties in August 2020.

IAN MCCAW BIO IAN MCCAW

Ian McCaw has a vision for Liberty Athletics, and he has worked quickly to make that vision a reality since being named the department’s 11th director of athletics on Nov. 28, 2016. His vision is for Liberty’s intercollegiate athletics program to Train Champions for Christ, provide a world-class student-athlete experience, and achieve victory with integrity. McCaw has lived out this mission, guiding Liberty Athletics to unparalleled success on the field, in the classroom, and in the local community in a short time on Liberty Mountain. Heading into the 2020-21 athletics season, Liberty’s teams have captured 26 total conference titles since McCaw’s arrival on Liberty Mountain. The Flames Football program won it’s first-ever bowl game, men’s basketball captured it’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, and Liberty studentathletes have posted department record numbers in GPA and graduation success rate.

During Liberty’s final two seasons as a member of the Big South Conference, McCaw guided Liberty Athletics to its 13th and 14th Sasser Cup titles in 2017 and 2018, an annual award given to the top athletics program in the conference. McCaw also helped pave the way for the future of Liberty Athletics on May 17, 2018, when it was announced that 17 of the 20 NCAA Division I programs would end a 27-year run in the Big South Conference to join the ASUN Conference for the 2018-19 athletics season. Under McCaw’s leadership, Liberty Athletics wasted little time making an impact in the ASUN Conference. During its inaugural season as a conference member, Liberty’s Athletics programs captured seven ASUN championship titles, including men’s basketball (regular season and tournament), baseball (tournament), women’s tennis (regular season), men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field. Additionally, Liberty Athletics was awarded the Bill Bibb Trophy, which is presented to the ASUN Conference institution with the top overall athletics program. Liberty was also presented with the ASUN Conference’s Jesse Fletcher (Men’s All-Sports) and Sherman Day (Women’s All-Sports) Trophies. This marked the third time in conference history a member institution has swept all three honors and the first time since FGCU did so in 2012-13.

Less than three months into his time at the head of the Athletics Department, McCaw helped launch Liberty to the top level of intercollegiate competition. On Feb. 16, 2017, Liberty received notification that the NCAA had approved its request to enter into a two-year Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) reclassification process. McCaw led Liberty during its final season as a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) independent in 2017 and guided the Flames into their first season at the FBS level in 2018 — fulfilling the vision of university founder, Dr. Jerry Falwell, for Liberty’s Athletics programs to compete at the highest level of NCAA competition.

STUDENT-ATHLETE GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE Liberty Athletics finished the 2019-20 season with an 88 percent student-athlete graduation rate, the highest rate in department history. Liberty’s student-athlete Graduation Success Rate (GSR) has seen an increase or remained steady in every year since the 2012-13 academic year. Additionally, 19 of Liberty’s 20 NCAA Division I athletic programs have a graduation rate of 80 percent or higher.

ACADEMIC HONORS LIBERTY STUDENT-ATHLETES ARE RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY AND WITHIN THE ASUN CONFERENCE FOR THEIR HIGH ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS. Since the start of the 2016-17 school year, seven student-athletes have been awarded the nation’s highest academic distinction, CoSIDA Academic All-America status: Jovaine Atkinson (track & field) Serena Barr (at-large team/field hockey), Kat Bouton (track & field), Alicia Finnigan (at-large team/ swimming & diving), Ruben Garcia (men’s soccer), Amelia Johnson (volleyball), and Hunter Winstead (football). During the 2020-21 academic year, 393 student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA (69%). Additionally, 44 student-athletes earned a 4.0 cumulative GPA, while 19 out of LIberty’s 20 programs earned a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA. Liberty Athletics earned the second highest cumulative GPA on record as well, 3.27. A total of 249 Liberty Flames studentathletes garnered inclusion on the 2020-21 ASUN Conference Academic Honor Roll.

RAISING ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATE (APR) Over the last several years, the Liberty University Athletics program has met or exceeded the NCAA standards as defined by the APR initiative. A winning tradition at the highest level of NCAA collegiate football was brought to Liberty Mountain when Hugh Freeze was introduced as the ninth head coach in football program history on Dec. 7, 2018.

Additionally, Freeze guided the Flames through one of the most unique seasons in NCAA college football history in 2020 where Liberty finished the year ranked No. 17 in the country and tied a program record with a 10-1 overall record.

Just like the other stops along his storied coaching career, Freeze has quickly elevated Liberty’s program to unprecedented success during his short time with the Flames.

After leading the Flames to an 8-5 record in 2019 and a 10-1 mark in 2020, Freeze has posted a combined 60-38 mark in nine seasons as a head coach (See ^ note below for more information about his career coaching record).

Freeze has experienced similar success at each of his head coaching stops: Lambuth University (2008-09), Arkansas State (2011), Ole Miss (201216), and Liberty (2019-20). Liberty is the second team in NCAA history to win a bowl game during its first two full seasons at the FBS level (2019 and 2020), both coming under Freeze’s leadership.

Freeze’s renowned high-powered offense allowed two of the program’s best offensive standouts to cement their names in Liberty’s record books with numbers that may last for quite some time during his first seasons at Liberty. Wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden finished his career as the program’s all-time career leader in receiving yards (3,814), receptions (240), and

HUGH FREEZE BIO touchdowns. Gandy-Golden was a semifinalist for the 2019 Biletnikoff Award and was named to the Phil Steele All-America team. Quarterback Stephen Calvert completed his days in a Liberty uniform passing for a program record 12,025 career passing yards, 93 career touchdowns, and 896 career competitions. As a team, Liberty finished the 2019 season ranked No. 21 in the country in passing offense (288.9 yards per game) and No. 32 in total offense (439.4 yards per game). Liberty posted an 8-5 record, the most wins for a Flames football team since 2014. When hired at Liberty on Dec. 7, 2018, Freeze brought over 25 years of continued coaching success, including head coaching experience that has led to conference titles, nationally ranked recruiting classes, and bowl appearances at multiple stops. Prior to his current coaching position at Liberty, the native of Oxford, Miss., returned to his hometown school and led it back to championship form during his five seasons as head coach at Ole Miss (2012-16). Freeze guided Ole Miss to bowl games during three of his five years with the Rebels, including victories in the Music City Bowl (2013) and the Sugar Bowl (2015). Freeze’s time in Oxford was highlighted by a 10-3 campaign in 2015, the program’s first 10-win season since 2003. The Rebels won their first four games of the 2015 season, including a 43-37 road victory over No. 2 Alabama, Ole Miss’ first win in Tuscaloosa, Ala., since 1988. Alabama went on to claim the national title, finishing the season with a 14-1 overall record. The Crimson Tide’s loss to Ole Miss marked the third time in program history that the Rebels were the national champion’s only loss during their championship season. The 2015 campaign also included a thrilling 38-27 win over No. 21 Mississippi State in its rivalry “Egg Bowl” game with the Bulldogs and a 48-20 win over No. 16 Oklahoma State in a New Year’s Sugar Bowl contest. Ole Miss was ranked as high as No. 3 in the national polls in both 2014 and 2015 and finished top 10 in the country for the first time since 1969 after the Sugar Bowl win (No. 9 in the coaches poll and No. 10 in the Associated Press poll).

Ole Miss was a mainstay in the national polls during Freeze’s tenure, including top 25 rankings for 45 weeks over his five-year coaching stay and a string of 27-straight weeks in the polls for the first time since 1957-62. In 2013, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) awarded Freeze the Grant Teaff Coach of the Year award. Freeze has been heavily involved with FCA during his entire coaching career and has been featured in the FCA Magazine and spoken at FCA functions. Freeze was also a finalist for the 2014 Bear Bryant Award and the 2014 Dobb Trophy. The Bear Bryant Award is given annually to the top NCAA National Coach of the Year, while the Dobb Trophy honors the head coach whose team excels on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. Freeze has an eye for the nation’s most talented high school players, collecting four nationally ranked recruiting classes at Ole Miss. In 2013 and 2016, his recruiting classes ranked in the top five nationally, making them the best in program history. Freeze and his staff developed 20 players who earned All-SEC honors, including All-Americans Cody Prewitt, Senquez Golson, Robert Nkemdiche, Laremy Tunsil, Evan Engram, Laquon Treadwell, and Trae Elston. Treadwell was named Ole Miss’ first ever SEC Freshman of the Year in 2013 and became the school’s first Biletnikoff Award finalist in 2015. Nkemdiche was the first defensive lineman to be named a Hornung Award finalist. Engram won the Ozzie Newsome Award and Pop Warner College Football Award following the 2016 season. Eleven Ole Miss players were selected in the NFL Draft during Freeze’s time as head coach, including first-rounder Engram as well as D.J. Jones, Derrick Jones, and Chad Kelly hearing their names called in the latest draft. In 2016, the Rebels had three first-round draft picks in Tunsil, Treadwell, and Nkemdiche. Donte Moncrief, Senquez Golson, Fahn Cooper, and Cody Core were also drafted over the last four years. Before returning to Oxford, the former Ole Miss assistant experienced a record-setting run at Arkansas State. With Freeze as head coach in 2011, the Red

HUGH FREEZE BIO Wolves captured the Sun Belt Conference championship and became just the third school in Sun Belt history to finish undefeated in league play with a perfect 8-0 mark. The 10-2 overall record marked the program’s first 10-win season since 1986, when ASU was a member of the I-AA Southland Conference. In the best debut season ever by an A-State head coach, Freeze became just the 14th FBS first-year head coach to win 10 regular season games. He also returned ASU to a bowl game for the first time since 2005. Freeze was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year, while 13 of his pupils earned all-conference honors. Freeze’s first season in Jonesboro saw him serve as Arkansas State’s offensive coordinator, guiding the Red Wolves’ offense to a record-breaking year in 2010. ASU, ranked No. 42 in the nation in scoring offense, finished the season averaging 30 points a game and recorded at least 20 points in 11 consecutive games for the first time in school history. Freeze’s offense scored 46 touchdowns for the fourth-most in school history and the most since the 1975 season. Prior to his arrival at Arkansas State, Freeze compiled a 20-5 record over the 2008 and 2009 seasons at the helm of the Lambuth University football program in Jackson, Tenn. Freeze was named the American Football Coaches Association’s Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Eagles to their best regular season in school history with an 11-0 record. Prior to taking over as head coach at Lambuth, Freeze served on the Ole Miss staff from 2005-07, including the final two seasons as an assistant coach. Before going to Ole Miss, Freeze served 13 years at Briarcrest Christian School (Memphis, Tenn.) as a classroom teacher, coach, and administrator. He was the Saints’ head football coach from 1995 to 2004, running the nohuddle “spread system” for six years that led to six straight state championship games. Freeze compiled a 99-23 record while at Briarcrest, which included an undefeated season in 1996, and led the school to state championship titles in 2002 and 2004. Briarcrest won regional titles in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2002, and Freeze was named the

Region 8-AA Coach of the Year five times and Associated Press Coach of the Year four times. Among his talented pupils during that period were eventual Rebels and former NFL starters Michael Oher and Greg Hardy. Before assuming the role of head coach at Briarcrest, Freeze served as the teams’ offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 1992-94, as the Saints reached the TSSAA state semifinals twice. A 1988 graduate of Senatobia High School, Freeze received an associate degree from Northwest Mississippi Community College in 1990 and was a two-year letterwinner on the Ranger baseball team. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992. It was while attending USM that he became active in mission projects, serving as a missionary in Houston, Salt Lake City, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Australia. Freeze also served as the state president for the Mississippi Baptist Student Union. Born in Oxford and raised in Independence, Mississippi, Hugh and his wife, Jill, are the parents of three daughters: Ragan, Jordan, and Madison.

2019 GAME RECAP: In a season that saw the offense grab most of the attention with its gaudy numbers, it was the Liberty defense that showed up in its biggest game, as a stout defensive effort led Liberty to a 23-16 win over Georgia Southern in the 2019 FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl. With the win, the Flames cap off a memorable first full season at the FBS level with an impressive 8-5 record - Liberty completed its FBS reclassification process in August, received its first-ever bowl game invitation on Dec. 8, and walked away from Exploria Stadium with a bowl game trophy in hand. Liberty’s defensive effort held Georgia Southern to 154 rushing yards, a single rushing touchdown, and three field goals in the victory. On the day, the Flames outgained the Eagles in total offense (402 to 249). Flames defensive end Jessie Lemonier was named the 2019 Cure Bowl MVP, finishing the game with eight tackles, including two sacks. Liberty’s four-year starting quarterback Stephen Calvert finished the day completing 16-of-35 attempts for 270 yards and two touchdowns. He ended his career as the program’s all-time career leader in passing yards (12,025), completions (896) and touchdowns (93).

2020 GAME RECAP: Liberty’s Elijah James blocked a game-tying field goal attempt in overtime, securing No. 23 Liberty’s 37-34 win over No. 9 Coastal Carolina in the 2020 FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl. The Flames finished their second season of full FBS bowl eligibility with a 10-1 record, winning the FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl for the second year in a row. Liberty is just the second team (also Appalachian State) to win bowl games in each of its first two seasons of bowl eligibility following a transition from the FCS. Liberty snapped Coastal Carolina’s (11-1) 12-game winning streak, which was tied for the longest FBS winning streak in the nation. Liberty quarterback Malik Willis was named Cure Bowl MVP after totaling 357 yards of offense and rushing for a Cure Bowl-record four touchdowns. Liberty earned its first-ever win over an FBS Top 25 program and knocked Coastal Carolina from the ranks of the unbeaten for the second time ever. The Flames defeated then 11-0 CCU by a 15-14 score on a lastsecond blocked field goal on Nov. 22, 2014.

A then Liberty- and Big South-record 19,314 fans attended the first game at the renovated Williams Stadium during a 52-14 victory over Savannah State.

Williams Stadium hosted its first-ever nationally televised game on ESPNEWS as Liberty defeated No. 4 Coastal Carolina 24-21.

Newly-expanded Williams Stadium hosted Liberty’s inaugural game as an FBS member. The Flames defeated Old Dominion 52-10.

Liberty hosted No. 22 Syracuse at Williams Stadium, marking the first time a Power 5 and top-25 ranked FBS team visited Lynchburg.

The Flames post a perfect 6-0 record at home in 2020 and go on to win their second straight Cure Bowl title. The Flames defeated No. 9/11 Coastal Carolina 37-34 in overtime in the FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl and finished the year with a 10-1 mark and ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press poll and No. 18 in the Amway Coaches Poll.

LIBERTY FOOTBALL CENTER ABOUT The Liberty Football Center (LFC) is a 65,455-square-foot facility located in the north end zone at Williams Stadium that was renovated and reopened in Spring 2020. Shortly after the completion of the 2018 football season, Liberty began the renovation project to expand its football operations center that originally opened in 2006 and was known as the Football Operations Center (FOC). The recently completed renovation project added 18,000 square feet to the three-story facility. The top floor of the newly renovated facility houses 17 offices, 10 position meeting rooms, and offensive and defensive meeting rooms, plus a 147-seat, theater-style team meeting room. The middle floor of the building, located on ground level, includes a new locker room with 122 lockers and an attached equipment room to better service Liberty’s football players.

This floor also houses a 13,000-square-foot player’s lounge, including a nutrition center, and can accommodate up to 130 people. The area also will be used as a recruiting area during home football games. A glass enclosed cardio workout room replaced the existing front entrance to the operations center, and the workout area overlooks the lower level. Rounding out the new amenities of this floor is a press room for weekly press conference and postgame interviews, plus a new training room. The sports medicine area also includes 11 treatment beds, an on-site x-ray room, and hydrotherapy pools. Closing out the facility is a state-of-theart weight room in the lower level of the operations center. The 16,000-square-foot workout space is furnished with the latest training equipment, allowing Liberty’s players to prepare themselves to excel at the highest level of college football.

INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY As part of the football program’s FBS reclassification process, Liberty opened its newest football facility during the summer of 2017 — the Liberty University Indoor Practice Facility. The $29 million project provides a full-size indoor football practice field, plus end zones, with a 70-foot ceiling clearance. The facility is located northeast of the Football Operations Center and adjacent to Liberty’s AstroTurf practice field.

FLAMES SPIRIT AND TRADITION THE NICKNAME The Liberty University athletics teams have been nicknamed the Flames since 1974, when the student body chose the Flames over several other options. The decision was based upon the school’s motto, “Knowledge Aflame.” Liberty began in 1971 as Lynchburg Baptist College with green and gold as the school’s colors. In 1976, the name was adjusted to Liberty Baptist College, and the colors were changed to red, white, and blue. The school once again changed its name in 1985 to Liberty University. However, throughout the shifts, “Flames” remained the nickname for Liberty’s athletics teams. In 1980, the eagle was designated as the Flames’ new mascot because of the patriotic symbolism and connection with the school name. It was designed with the Flames’ nickname in mind. Thus, a flaming torch clutched in the eagle’s left talon was included in the original mascot renderings.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE YEAR IN REVIEW The 2020-21 athletic year was one of the best in Liberty Athletics department history. The Flames tied a department record with 10 conference titles, including ASUN championships in softball, women’s soccer, women’s cross country, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field and men’s tennis and a CCSA title in women’s swimming & diving.

FOOTBALL

The women’s cross country team qualified for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships for the first time, placing 26th nationally. Liberty captured four ASUN Conference titles, including women’s cross country, men’s indoor track & field and a sweep of the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

VOLLEYBALL

The Flames finished 23-6, capturing their first outright ASUN regular-season title and cutting down the nets as ASUN Tournament champions for the third year in a row. Liberty extended its home winning streak to 36 games and also posted victories over Mississippi State and South Carolina away from Lynchburg.

The Flames finished 10-1, matching the program record for victories in a season. Liberty recorded its first-ever win over an ACC program (Syracuse), its first win over Virginia Tech and its first triumph over an FBS Top 25 opponent (No. 9/11 Coastal Carolina in the Cure Bowl). As a result, the Flames finished the season ranked No. 17 nationally.

A youthful Lady Flames team placed two players (Lydia Burts and Trinity Watts) on the ASUN All-Freshman Team. Burts, a second team All-ASUN honoree, was the first Liberty freshman since 2016 to earn all-conference honors.

MEN’S SOCCER

Liberty finished 7-3-2, headlined by its firstever win over North Carolina, a victory over No. 21 Coastal Carolina and a defeat of Big South champion High Point. The Flames earned their first-ever national ranking, reaching as high as No. 15 during the season.

The 19-8 Lady Flames posted their best ASUN regular-season record (12-4) and qualified for the ASUN Tournament title game for the third consecutive year. The Lady Flames went 12-0 during their inaugural season at Liberty Arena, pushing their overall home winning streak to 17.

The Lady Flames used an improbable run of four wins in 11 days, including victories over both No. 1 seeds (Lipscomb and North Florida), to capture their first ASUN title. As a result, Liberty made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2016.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING

Hosting the CCSA Swimming & Diving Championship, Liberty finished in a first-place tie with FGCU to capture its third consecutive conference title. Payton Keiner qualified for the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship for the third time in her career.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Flames claimed their first ASUN Championship title to qualify for their fourth NCAA Division I Softball Championship appearance in program history. For the second time, the Lady Flames advanced to the NCAA regional final round. Liberty also cracked the national Top 25 polls for the first time ever, topping out at No. 24.

MEN’S TENNIS

The Flames enjoyed a history-making season, winning a program-record 20 matches capped off by a victory in the ASUN title match for their first-ever conference title. Liberty also achieved its first national ranking, reaching No. 39 in the year-end listing.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The Lady Flames went 18-7, tying for the second most victories in program history. Liberty went a perfect 6-0 in conference play, earning the ASUN North Division’s top seed. Individually, Esther Lovato finished the season with a 23-1 singles record.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Liberty reached the ASUN Championship final for the second time in as many seasons. The Lady Flames went 10-9 against a schedule that included seven nationally ranked opponents and boasted a league-high 14 AllASUN honorees.

MEN’S GOLF

The Flames qualified for the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf National Championship for the third time in program history, finishing in 21st place. Liberty also claimed its first ASUN championship in record fashion, posting the lowest 54-hole team score (20-under par 832) in tournament history.

BASEBALL

Liberty finished the season at 41-16, capturing the ASUN North Division title with a 19-2 conference record and advancing to the ASUN Championship title game. The Flames earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, where they advanced to the regional final for the second time in program history.

LIBERTY FLAMES SPORTS NETWORK FOOTBALL GAME DAY COVERAGE

During the 2021-22 academic year, Flames fans can catch all the action on the Liberty Flames Sports Network (LFSN), which is comprised of Liberty’s radio and television networks and has covered Flames athletics since 1981. The flagship radio station for Liberty Football is The Journey 88.3 FM in Lynchburg, Va. The 50,000-watt station is part of The Journey FM Radio Network, which has 19 affiliates that cover Virginia and much of North Carolina. Alan York returns for his 12th season calling Flames Athletics. York is the radio play-byplay voice of football and men’s basketball. Additionally, York is the television voice for Liberty Baseball and Softball. Nick Pierce handles radio play-by-play duties for baseball and the football sidelines. Fans may also follow Liberty Athletics on WFFP Channel 24, the flagship television station of LFSN. The station airs football as well as baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and volleyball games. The station can be viewed on all satellite and cable systems throughout Southwestern and Central Virginia.

The Liberty Flames Sports Network from Van Wagner is the best way to follow Liberty Flames Football on the radio at home and on the road. The tailgate show begins 90 minutes prior to kickoff. Hosted by Nick Pierce and guests, the show provides the most in-depth pregame radio coverage of Liberty Football. Fans will hear commentary from coaches and players, along with exclusive pregame thoughts from Head Coach Hugh Freeze. Alan York and Paul Rutigliano team up for their 12th season together in the radio booth. During the live radio play-by-play broadcast, Nick Pierce reports from the sideline, and live studio reports keep you up-to-date on scores from across the country. At the conclusion of the game, listen to the Postgame Show for a complete recap, including interviews with the Flames and Head Coach Hugh Freeze.

LIBERTY FLAMES FOOTBALL SHOW The Liberty Flames Sports Hotline is broadcast live each Monday night during the football season. The “Voice of the Flames” Alan York hosts the hour-long show that takes you inside Liberty Athletics. Head Football Coach Hugh Freeze joins York each week, along with Liberty Athletics administrators, student-athletes, and other coaches. The show is carried on the regional ESPN family of stations: 93.3 FM (Lynchburg), 1320 AM (Lynchburg), 1240 AM (Roanoke), 106.3 FM (Danville), and 1250 AM (Bedford).

Liberty sporting events have been broadcast on outlets across the nation, including the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), ESPN+, ESPN3, Cox Television Network, American Sports Network (ASN), The Walk, and various independent stations, representing more than 40 million households coast-to-coast. FLAMES CENTRAL A weekly sports show that airs on LFSN affiliates around the country and on ESPN+. The show is available locally on WSET ABC 13, WDBJ 7, and MASN. Check local listings for air times. The 30-minute show, hosted by Matt Warner, Rett McGibbon, and Emily Austen, focuses on Liberty student-athletes, coaches and alumni, while telling stories of faith and discussing current issues in sports and culture.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND LIBERTY UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND

The Liberty University Marching Band, “The Spirit of the Mountain,” has established itself as a prestigious collegiate marching ensemble. This corps-style group features contemporary show designs which have appealed to a variety of mass audiences. The flashy horn line, precision marching, and impeccable movements have dazzled many crowds to their feet, while the color guard has demonstrated its versatility with a variety of choreographed movements. The band has performed at the New York Giants vs. Atlanta Falcons game at the Meadowlands, for the Collegiate Marching Band Festival in Allentown, PA on three occasions and for a large number of competitive exhibition performances on the East Coast. In addition, the band performed in other exciting venues in New York City, college campuses, Jacksonville Landing, Walt Disney World, Carowinds Park, Broadway at the Beach, a host of competition sites, and the Lynchburg community. The “Spirit of the Mountain” will again continue to annually host the State of Virginia Marching Band State Championship Finals in Williams Stadium, performing exhibition for all the bands in attendance for both events. The Liberty University Marching Band is excited about their show, entitled “Sunny With A Chance,” exclusively arranged for Liberty University. The show is comprised of eight tunes, most which are lively and sunny, but there’s always a chance for a storm warning! The show is

designed especially to entertain the audiences at NCAA football games. Membership in the marching band is comprised of students majoring in just about every department and discipline across the university—you don’t have to be a music major to join! Dr. Kerr joined the Liberty University School of Music faculty in 1990 and was appointed Director of Bands in 2000. Dr. Kerr received his bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Liberty in 1982, Master’s from Virginia Tech, and Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Kerr also directs the acclaimed Liberty University Wind Symphony and teaches instrumental conducting and other music and band courses. Essential staff that support the Liberty University include Tommy Goddard, assistant director of athletic bands and drumline, and Bryanna Boyd, guard instructor. Marching and music technicians include Tim Fus, Kara Witt, Caleb Martin, Dani Smith, Zach Federico, Elijah Cregger, and Jonathan Byus.

KYRIE (DORN) ADAMS

VOLLEYBALL: 1996-99

Kyrie (Dorn) Adams was one of the driving forces behind the Liberty volleyball program’s success in the late 1990’s, helping Liberty post 20 or more wins during each of her four seasons on the court. The Lady Flames won a combined 93 matches during Adams’ stellar four-year career, resulting in two Big South regular season titles, two Big South Tournament victories and the program’s first two trips to the NCAA Volleyball Championship (1997 and 1999). Adams was a three-time All-Big South selection and was named the Big South Player of the Year and Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1998. During her standout junior season, she led the Big South in kills per set (4.12), while sending down a career-best 424 kills. When she graduated from Liberty, the native of East Northport, N.Y., ranked third in program history with 1,476 career kills and fifth with 1,235 career digs. Adams was the fifth player in program history to join the 1,000/1,000 club (career kills/digs), helping her earn a spot on the 1990-99 Big South Volleyball All-Decade team. Following her time with the Lady Flames, Adams played with D.C. Women’s Pro Team and oversees with Athletes in Action.

Bussey’s early individual success on the mat helped the Flames achieve new levels of team success. Liberty finished in 15th place at the 1983 NAIA National Championship, the Flames’ highest finish at the NAIA level before transitioning to the NCAA Division II level. The 177-pound wrestler finished in fifth place at the 1985 NCAA Division II national champion and in sixth place at the 1986 NCAA Division II national champion. During his senior campaign, Liberty finished in fifth place at the 1986 national championship event, the highest national finish by a Liberty athletics program any level of NCAA competition. The native of South River, N.J., is a member of Liberty’s Eagle Medal Gold Club (100 career victories), finishing his career with a 110-400 record (73.3 win percentage). Bussey was a four-time team captain, sharing the honors with Pate Sole (1982-83), Rick Sielhamer (1983-84) and Perry Aincough (1984-85 and 1985-86.

MEN’S GOLF: 2009-12

Robert Karlsson helped establish Liberty’s men’s golf as a perennial top-40 team with a stellar four-year career during which he rewrote the Flames’ record books. Karlsson burst onto the scene in 2009, joining the program in the spring and claiming Big South Freshman of the Year honors. The conference accolade was the first of many that would including being a four-time All-Big South selection a two-time Big South Men’s Golfer of the Year (2010 and 2011). Karlsson led the Flames to Big South titles in 2011 and 2012, the first two in program history. Liberty would claim the NCAA Greensboro Regional title in 2012 and make their firstever appearance at the 2012 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. The Flames finished the event in 10th place, the highest finish by any team at an NCAA Division I national championship event in Liberty Athletics history. The native of Kalmar, Sweden, finished his career with the lowest career scoring average

James McKnight was a two-sport standout student-athlete for the Flames, setting new standards of excellence on the gridiron and in track & field during his time

Despite only playing for three seasons for the Flames’ football program, McKnight finished his career with 1,948 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. At the time of his graduation, his touchdown mark ranked second only to fellow Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame member Kelvin Edwards in program history.

Leuzinger was a two-time Big South Player of the Year (2008 and 2009) and finished her career with 1,883 career points scored (third best in program history). She was also a twotime Big South Female Student-Athlete of the Year (2008 and 2009), a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree (2008 and 2009) and was named to the Associated Press All-America honorable mention team in 2009.

McKnight joined the Flames’ track & field squad during his junior and senior seasons and helped the program capture its first-ever conference title as a senior at the Big South Outdoor Track Championship in 1994. One of six 100-point club members on the 1994 team, he finished his career with three school records, including the school record for the indoor long jump that has stood for nearly 30 years (25-0.5/7.63 m).

Leuzinger’s dominance on the court helped Liberty win 96 games during her career, including Big South Conference titles in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Liberty finished the 2007-08 season with a 28-4 record and earned a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, the program’s best-ever seed in the tournament.

Following his collegiate career, the native of Apopka, Fla., became the 10th player in football program history to sign with an NFL franchise. He played for 11 years in the NFL with four teams (Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins and the N.Y. Giants), finishing his career with 3,595 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.

The native of Xenia, Ohio, was selected by the San Antonio Silver Stars with the 14th pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft. She played two seasons in the WNBA and seven more overseas in Europe. Leuzinger continues to be a part of the game she loves as she currently serves as the head coach at Evangel University in Springfield, Mo.

UNIVERSITY FEATURE STORY NEW STUDENTS ARE WELCOMED TO LIBERTY’S CAMPUS AMIDST LARGEST PROJECTED FALL ENROLLMENT New residential student move-in began on Liberty University’s campus the morning of August 18 with this year’s incoming class projected to be the largest in school history for fall enrollment. “We have the greatest number of first-time enrollees in the history of our university,” Liberty President Jerry Prevo said. “What’s more, our retention rate has increased over the last year, which is all the more remarkable because so many institutions of higher education are struggling in this very area. I believe that God has great things in store for Liberty University.” Provost and Chief Academic Advisor Scott Hicks shared Prevo’s enthusiasm regarding the upcoming school year, exhorting the new students to walk by faith as they are equipped to serve God in their chosen fields of study. “It is with great excitement that we welcome our students to their Liberty home,” he said. “With the record influx of new students and some of the highest retention rates that we have seen in years, we continue to have the unparalleled opportunity to share the Gospel and to live out our lives for Him. We are truly blessed and remain grateful for all that God is doing at Liberty.” As parents and new students arrived on campus throughout the day, they were greeted and received help moving in from Liberty’s student leadership teams. “As a Community Group Leader, new student move-in gives me the opportunity to encourage and minister to freshmen and their families,” senior Taryn Storter said. “We are so excited to welcome this new class to campus and to the Liberty family.”

I’m looking forward to focusing on trying to lean on God more.” In addition to an increase in the incoming residential student population, Liberty is experiencing continued growth in enrollment in its Online Programs. “After all the challenges that hit universities the past year, we’re overjoyed to see caravans of parents arrive at Liberty University this week, delivering to us their sons and daughters for what is sure to be a memorable year,” Executive Vice President of Enrollment Management & Marketing Ron Kennedy said. “And because our online enrollment grew by another 6,000 students to over 114,000 students, we know that Liberty’s impact is felt across the nation. The spiritual focus exemplified through Liberty’s student leadership indicated to Liberty parent Mike Bingham that he is leaving his son in an environment where his spiritual well-being will be prioritized. “It’s invaluable,” Bingham said regarding the faith-based focus of Liberty. “As a Christian parent, I want to see my son grow in his faith,

ROCK ROYER/MAC RIVERA AWARD ABOUT In 1974, the Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award was established to honor the top senior student-athlete at Liberty University who best exemplifies the standards and lives of both of these great Christian men. Rock Royer was Liberty’s first football coach in 1973. Mac Rivera was a member of Liberty’s men’s basketball team from 1972 until 1975. Both Rock Royer and Mac Rivera tragically died at a young age, with Royer dying in a plane crash and Rivera passing away after a fall. This award encompasses more than just athletic ability. It recognizes the Liberty University graduating senior student- athlete who has maintained an exemplary testimony on the playing field, in the classroom and among the student body. The 2021 recipient of this award was men’s golf standout Kieran Vincent. Vincent was ranked as high as No. 6 in the Golfstat individual national rankings (April 21 rankings), the highest individual ranking in program history. He is the program’s firstever player to be named to the Fred Haskins Award watch list (top collegiate golfer in the country).

Vincent finished the 2020-21 season with a 70.48 stroke average, setting a new school record (previous record: Jonathan Yaun – 70.78 set in 2019-20). The native of Harare, Zimbabwe finished top 10 in seven out of nine events during the spring season and he played 66.7 percent of his rounds at par or better (18-of-27). Vincent ranks first in school history with a 71.81 career stroke average, which includes 20 top-10 finishes and 62 career rounds at par or better. Vincent completed his undergraduate degree in Business Administration: International Business with a 3.03 GPA in December 2019. He will complete his master’s degree in Exercise Science and Wellness: Fitness Specialist in December 2021. Outside of his success on the golf course and in the classroom, Vincent has spent many hours helping with community service projects. During his time at Liberty, he aided with the Share the Warmth, Spooktacular, Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat, Attitude of Gratitude, and A Dollar Makes a Difference community service programs.
