G

reetings! I would like to welcome you and your family to Liberty County, Georgia — home of Fort Stewart and the 3rd Infantry Division, picturesque coastal marshes and shorelines, friendly folks and bustling communities. We’re certainly glad you’re here. This is a very exciting time for the region, and we in Liberty look forward to acquainting all residents — established and newcomers alike — with our interesting attractions, thriving businesses, award-winning schools, dedicated healthcare providers and plentiful entertainment options. Nowhere is traditional Southern hospitality more evident than in our scenic little corner of the Peach State. With a solid representation of civic clubs, churches, volunteer organizations and neighborly support networks, it’s no surprise that those who settle here immediately feel comfortably at home. In addition, leisure-activity options are nearly endless, giving residents from all walks of life opportunities to immerse themselves in the hobby, sport or pastime of their choice. Those looking to spend time on or near the water are in luck. Head to the county’s east end for direct access to creeks, tidal marshes, rivers and the ocean. Grab a kayak, canoe or fishing pole and prepare for a sunny day of outdoor relaxation. Anyone brave enough to venture farther out can

hop aboard a charter boat and take to the seas for glimpses of dolphins, whales and even sharks. For more on water-related thrills, check out our story on page 20.

History buffs will delight in the area’s rich and unique past. Liberty County is home to two Declaration of Independence signers, Button Gwinnett and Lyman Hall, as well as a special variety of pear. The LeConte pear was named for Louis LeConte, a scholar and nature enthusiast whose home once stood at the site of what is now the LeConte-Woodmanston Plantation and Botanical Gardens in Midway. And anyone who sets out to explore Midway surely should trek just a little

farther down the road to Sunbury, where Fort Morris State Historic Site beckons guests with tales of battles and skirmishes fought hundreds of years ago. A jaunt out to the earthen berm, which dates back to the Revolutionary War, is enough to leave young visitors thirsting for more knowledge. So, it’s a good thing Liberty County has an excellent school system. Often lauded and awarded for its achievements — especially in the field of information technology — the district’s 14 learning sites and central office employ 1,507 administrators, teachers, and certified and classified staffers. During the 2013-14 school year, 567 students were enrolled in the gifted/ talented program, 480 students were in the honors-placement program and 24 students took advanced-placement courses. If you’re ready to learn more about our welcoming Coastal Georgia community, I invite you to leaf through the pages of this guide, where you’ll find plenty of information about settling into your new home, finding a place of worship, municipal services offered, recreational outlets, area culture and the overall quality of life our residents enjoy. Here’s hoping you’ll soon treasure Liberty County as much as we do. Hollie Moore Barnidge Editor-in-chief

Why We Love Summer in Liberty County A New Beginning

W

ith the end of summer comes the start of a new school year. It’s a chance for our community’s bright, young people to wipe their slates clean and start fresh by dedicating themselves to their studies, impressing their teachers and making new friends. Help boost your kiddos’ school spirit by taking them to the annual Back to School Rally, slated for 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12 at Briar Bay Park in Riceboro.

Lively music

Outdoor cooking

W

ho wants to be cooped up in a steamy kitchen when temperatures are hovering around 100 degrees? It’s no secret that Coastal Georgia summers are brutal, so let’s not make it more unbearable than it has to be. Grab the burgers, salads and icy beverages and head to the back patio to prepare and enjoy a meal. No fancy, elaborate outdoor kitchens are needed; a small grill and an inexpensive bag of charcoal will do the trick. For more on putting together the perfect seasonal meal, check out our story on grilling on page 16.

All about vacation

Pack your bags, whip out the GPS and embark on a road trip. With all the beautiful and interesting attractions we have around Coastal Georgia, there’s no need to travel very far or choose just one destination. Want to relax on a beach? Plenty to choose from — Tybee, Hilton Head or Jekyll islands. Ready for some U.S. history? Look no further than Fort Morris in Sunbury, Fort McAllister in Richmond Hill or Fort Pulaski in Savannah. Bonus: You can pick up interesting information while enjoying the great outdoors. For more on nearby vacation destinations, read up on area “staycation” opportunities on page 30.

Summer is a time to celebrate, and nothing conveys that message better than a catchy tune. Whatever your genre of choice happens to be, it seems Liberty County has something to offer. We’ve got rock and country at the upcoming 3rd Class Citizens concert, blues at the Blues & BBQ festival and even Colonial music at Fort Morris’ Independence Day and Labor Day commemorations. Lend them your ears and they’ll sing you a song.

Informal Wardrobe Options It’s sweltering out. We’re at the pool. We’re at barbecues and backyard parties. We’re reclining on the porch at sunset. Let’s make sure the attire matches the activity. Now’s the time to keep cool in tank tops and shorts, lounge in bathing suits, pad around in flip-flops and enjoy evening breezes in billowy sundresses. Time to get comfy and ditch the dry-cleaning bills.

E

njoying the outdoors and escaping a hot kitchen are two of Donna Groover’s top reasons for firing

up the grill. For Eddie Walden, trying to eat a meal with his three active children was the spark that ignited his grilling hobby. “I like having family around without feeling rushed to clear the table at a restaurant,” Walden says. “I really enjoy the fellowship.” For Walden, grilling is not just for supper. “In the fall, I make breakfast for the kids,” he says. “I like to grill eggs and sausage or bacon with the rind on it.” Hank Stacy, owner of Liberty Propane, has his reasons as well. “When my wife and I go camping, I’m the designated cook,” he says.

He also has helped cook the New Year’s Eve midnight breakfast at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6602 for the past five years. “I’ve been in the propane business for 35 years, so I’ve been cooking with propane for a long time,” says Stacy, who has an outdoor kitchen, gas grills and a Green Egg. “I guess I got into grilling because I like to please people with food, especially my family.” Walden says one of his family’s favorite dishes is grilled chicken. The night before preparing his often-requested specialty, he mixes up a brine with salt and brown sugar and lets the chicken absorb it overnight. He rinses the brine off of the meat, pats

the pieces dry and puts them on a 250-degree grill for about an hour. When Stacy makes chicken wings, he pulls them off before they have finished cooking. He stirs them in wing sauce, and then puts them back on the grill until they are ready to be eaten. Groover does not use sauce with her wings. She borrows an easy, four-step recipe from her friend and Hinesville resident, Lisa Cato, who says it’s best to remove wings from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before preparing them “to take the chill off.” She also suggests patting the wings dry and sprinkling on Morton’s Nature’s Seasons Seasoning Blend before tossing the chicken pieces on the grill and rotating them occasionally for even cooking.

Even dessert can be grilled,

according to Groover, who’s been known to slice a fresh peach in half, remove the pit, then place the sides face-down on the grill for a couple minutes. She’ll put the warm peaches face-up in a bowl, add mascarpone cheese or whipped-cream topping and serve them for dessert.

Scrumptious seasonings

G

roover calls Morton’s Nature’s Seasons her “go-to” spice. “It is a good blend of spices all in one container,” she says. Stacy usually uses dry spices when he creates seasoning blends and rubs at home. When it comes to steak, though, there seems to be agreement among local cooks that only salt and pepper are needed. Hands down, Walden says, he prefers to use ground red pepper instead of black pepper and garlic powder instead of garlic salt. If Stacy had a specialty, it might be steaks. Anyone who has eaten a steak at the VFW Post 6602 in recent years has sampled either Stacy’s or Kenny Geackel’s cooking. The pair work together on Wednesday nights to pre-

Grilling enthusiast Donna Groover sears chicken wings and okra on a charcoal grill in the backyard of her Hinesville home. When it comes to wings, Groover follows an easy, four-step recipe that calls for a special seasoning blend. In addition to meat, she likes to toss veggies and even fruit on the grill, sometimes adding olive oil, lemon juice or other herbs to bring out the natural flavor of the produce.

pare about 50-70 steaks as the orders come in. Stacy is a volunteer, and Geackel is the post commander. Their grill is a repurposed 250-gallon gas tank. Liberty Propane builds these grills in their shop on Oglethorpe Highway in the McIntosh community. Groover prefers her steaks rare, “just past shiny,” she says, but adds that it’s difficult to achieve this level of doneness on a charcoal grill. Walden says his ideal steak is an inchthick ribeye from a grass-fed cow. He trims the fat and allows the meat to warm to room

temperature before he lays it on the grill. He brushes the meat with olive oil or butter and red pepper, then sears the steaks four minutes on each side before flipping them again to create cross marks. He serves them on heated cast-iron plates with grilled mushrooms and onions. “It is important to let the meat rest for three to five minutes before slicing,” Walden says, “otherwise all of the juices run out.” When it comes to seafood, Groover says that paprika — especially on shrimp — will create a golden color before the meat is overcooked. liberty life magazine

17

Feel the Heat

A

lthough spice flavors are sometime said to “make or break” food, Stacy argues that, actually, “it’s all about temperature.” “I use a digital thermometer to check the temperature of meats,” he says. “I pull things off the grill before they are dry.” When smoking a Boston butt, though, Stacy bring the meat to a specific temperature, wraps it in aluminum foils and returns it to the grill for another 30 to 45 minutes.

Grilling is a faster way of cooking, according to Stacy. Smoking is for larger cuts of meat. Hickory chips, preferred by many grillers, should be soaked in water for 30 minutes then drained before they’re used. Wood chips work with charcoal grills or smokers. Stacy says he puts diluted apple-cider vinegar in a tin in the bottom of the cooker to create extra moisture. In addition to meat, Groover enjoys preparing fruits and vegetables on her grill. She just uses olive oil on most of the

vegetables that she sautés, but she adds a citrus zing to okra. She starts with lemon zest and then squeezes lemon juice just before the okra slices are removed from the heat. The other grilling aficionados also like to prepare veggies, including asparagus, summer squash, zucchini, mushrooms, onions and eggplant. They keep it simple, using a little butter or olive oil and salt and pepper on their produce.

Sweet stuff

E

ven dessert can be grilled, according to Groover, who’s been known to slice a fresh peach in half, remove the pit, then place the sides face-down on the grill for a couple minutes. She’ll put the warm peaches face-up in a bowl, add mascarpone cheese or whipped-cream topping and serve them for dessert. She also whips up a delectable grilled banana split by slicing a slightly green banana in half lengthwise and grilling the halves face-down until they’re warm and soft. Next, scoop them into a bowl with ice cream and traditional sundae toppings. Or, Groover advises, skip the ice cream and simply coat the grilled bananas in honey and brown sugar for a fast, delicious treat. Stacy says he makes blueberry dump cake on his grill and serves it with ice cream.

Natural ‘lighting’

N

either Walden nor Groover use lighter fluid for their charcoal grills. Both prefer regular Kingsford charcoal. Groover uses a few pieces of newspaper and a charcoal chimney to get her coals burning. She stacks the charcoal in a chimney that sits on two bricks, scrunches up the paper and positions it underneath the chimney before lighting it. She then spreads the coals out in the belly of the grill before they burn all white. Walden waits until the coals are totally white before he uses them for cooking. He also positions his coals with the cool ones in the center and the hotter ones on the outer ring, which gives him some leeway in where he places the food.

18

liberty life magazine

Liberty Propane owner Hank Stacy, left, and Kenny Geackel grill steaks at the VFW Post 6602 on Highway 196 West in Hinesville. The post hosts “steak night” from 5-8 p.m. every Wednesday, and the pair usually can be found manning the grill, cooking 50-70 steaks to perfection as the orders roll in.

“ I guess I got into grilling because I like to please people with food, especially my family.”

— Hank Stacy, owner of Liberty Propane

Tidying up

T

here are two schools of thought when it comes to cleaning the grill — cleaning it immediately after each use or just before each use. Shortening and an old towel can make quick work of tidying the equipment right after a meal, Walden says. He also uses a wire brush but steers clear of detergent. If a grate has been cleaned after use, Stacy recommends coating it with cooking spray to prevent rust. He prefers the other option, though, saying the oil on the grate protects it. Before preparing a feast, Stacy says he “fires up the grill real hot, then I use a wire brush to clean off grit from the previous meal.” He finishes by using a wet towel to wipe off the grate.

Fishing, boating among locals’ favorite activities on coastal waters

photography By geoff L . Johnson

One of the many joys of living in Liberty County is the direct access to the beautiful coastal waters provided by our creeks, tidal marshes, rivers and ocean. Taking a leisurely kayak or canoe trip along the Medway River or riding on a WaveRunner around St. Catherines Sound might be appealing, especially during the hot summer months. But for most people, of all the activities enjoyed in our coastal waters, nothing beats fishing.

flounder, sheepshead, whiting, triple tail, black drum and sharks. “We have a lot of sharks,” he says. “Different species and different sizes and we have some small ones that are fun to catch … and sheepshead is a fun fish to catch. It’s basically a tug of war; they are trying to pull down while you are trying to pull up.” Jarrell says people like to get in their kayaks and tour the county’s vast web of marshes. He adds that it also offers a different approach to wetting a hook. “Kayaking seems to really help with the artificial presentation,” he says, referring to the use of artificial lures as bait. “Since the kayak is small, most people will go out with artificial (lures), and as you use those more often, you start to see how effective they can be and it enhances the sport. It’s like a game. … You can trick the fish. … It’s kind of cool. You have to put the time in to know the area and to know the patterns and the kayak offers a lot of advantages. … You just have to put the time in.” During an earlier period in his angling career, Jarrell worked with one of the most well-known and longest-operating charter companies in the area, Miss Judy Charters. “Wild Bill — goodness, yes, he is a very nice person and very knowledgeable fisherman,” owner and operator Judy Helmey says. Much like Jarrell, Helmey says she thor-

oughly enjoys the sport of fishing and providing guided tours along Liberty’s coastal waters. “I’ve been in the same place since 1948, and I have a dock here at my residence. … I am the fleeting few,” she says, adding that her father started the business and she took it over in 1956. “It’s a beautiful area, and we are the only people on the East Coast that (have) all these beautiful barrier islands that nobody truly lives on. … And once you pass those, you go right into the ocean.” Helmey runs charters and tours seven days a week and says there are a variety of fish, which makes angling a year-round event. “We have a pretty good fish population; all you really have to know is what season these fish are in our area to target them,” she says. “We have our GPS, which is great for navigational purposes, and help you get where you want to go and find what you want to fish on. We have the Savannah snapper banks, which is 30 miles offshore, and you can catch just about anything you can imagine on the bottom out there. It is just a great area to fish.” Helmey says her charter company is full-service, catering to the needs of her clients. “We pick people up from their hotels, their company, their house. … If it is in the area, we will pick them up. … We will bring the food and everything, if needed,” she says.

ake Midway resident Bill “Wild Bill” Jarrell, for example, who has a passion for exploring the great outdoors. Jarrell, the owner of Coastal Georgia Adventures, says he has fished along the coast since 1980. Currently taking a short break from running ecotours and fishing charters — only long enough to complete a new project — he is still quick to offer his knowledge when asked about dropping a hook. “There is a lot of fish. … We are mostly known for our sea trout and our red fish,” Jarrell says, adding that he used to launch from the public dock at Sunbury. For the past few years, Jarrell says he’s been fishing out of Yellow Bluff. He says he’s also had the good fortune to go out with several fishing guides and charter captains throughout the years. “I have fished all up and down the Georgia coast,” he adds. When teaching novices, Jarrell says he likes to break down fishing based on the color of the water. “The first thing I think of when I think of different kinds of fishing is … brown water, green water to blue water,” he says. “Brown water would be inshore, green would be offshore but not out by the gulfstream, and after that, it is blue water.” Jarrell says he likes to do a lot of what he calls near-shore fishing, which is good for

Just beyond the uninhabited barrier islands off Liberty County’s coast lies the Atlantic ocean, giving coastal dwellers easy access to angling, boating and diving opportunities.

Jarrell and Helmey both agree that while fishing is at the forefront, the local coastal waters have much more to offer than casting a line. They also offer views of nature. Both say that if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you might catch a glimpse of a majestic right whale or Atlantic bottlenose dolphin. “The Atlantic bottlenose dolphin can be found in our estuaries during all 12 months of the year,” says Kate Doyle, a marine-science technician for the Marine and Environmental Sciences Department at Savannah State University. “Research currently being conducted

at SSU by graduate students of Dr. Tara Cox is examining these animals more closely to determine which stay year-round versus which animals leave the area and when. To date, the data indicates that there are more animals found in the summer versus the rest of the year. The highly endangered North Atlantic right whale is found off Georgia waters from November through February during their calving season.” Doyle says boaters and kayakers should not disturb or approach marine mammals. She adds that feeding them is against the law under the Federal Marine Mammal Protec-

tion Act of 1972. Before the federal mandate, Helmey says she used to feed a few dolphins that stayed around her dock. “We had three dolphins at our dock for 30 years,” she says, adding that they were named Mork, Mindy and Smiley. “They would come to our docks and meet our boats. … You could call them just like you would your dog, and they would come and we would toss them live fish. … The new laws came into effect and we couldn’t feed them anymore, but we see dolphins all the time. In fact, our area is known for where they birth their babies.”

would come to our docks and meet our boats. … You could call them just like you would your dog, and they would come and we would toss them live fish.”

Jarrell says you don’t have to go out into the ocean to catch a glimpse of a dolphin. “We have lots of them,” he says, mentioning that he occasionally sees the marine mammals while guiding visitors on ecotrips. “People, especially from out of state, are shocked to see how many dolphins we’ve got,” he says. “It’s beautiful. It’s just like watching anything that is graceful. … They are in awe of just how wonderful they are to just look at and watch them do their thing. They are so in sync with nature.” “We encounter dolphins all the time in our local marshes,” Doyle confirms. “The National Marine Fisheries Service stipulates a 24

But along with the whales came their main predator, Helmey says. “The great white sharks started coming here. … They’ve been coming here for forever because they can eat these whales. … When they die, they float, and the sharks can eat them from the bottom,” she says. Helmey says our coastal waters offer another great gem nearby that people can explore. “You have Gray’s Reef, and that is not very far offshore,” she says. “People who have their own recreational boat can go to it, but they really need to check the Gray’s Reef website (graysreef.noaa.gov) because part of Gray’s Reef is closed for research purposes. … Part of it we can fish in and part of it we can’t.” Gray’s Reef “is one of the largest nearshore live-bottom reefs of the southeastern United States,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Designated as a sanctuary in 1981, it is the only protected natural reef area on the continental shelf off the Georgia coast. Located 16 miles east of Sapelo Island, it covers an area roughly the size of 14,000 acres. The NOAA manages the sanctuary and recommends divers have extensive experience in open-ocean diving due to the sensitive nature of the sanctuary, the depth and tidal conditions that can occur. They also highly recommend, as does Helmey, that boaters read the laws and know the rules regarding anchoring and fishing within the sanctuary’s boundary. Gray’s Reef is only accessible by boat, and many independent dive shops, charter companies and boat operators run fishing and dive trips to the sanctuary. Graysreef.noaa.gov provides an updated listing of dive companies within the state that offer excursions to the sanctuary.

Helmey says her fishing charter usually avoids fishing at Gray’s Reef. She says there are several artificial reefs nearby that her company prefers to fish from. “All these artificial reefs are in about 40 feet of water and are holding bottom fish right now — sea bass, blue fish, there is Spanish mackerel running, cobia. It is a very good time to go fishing,” she says. She also advises anyone planning to charter a fishing vessel to do a little research. “You need to think about whether you are looking to go fishing inshore or are you looking to go offshore in the ocean,” Helmey says. “Some people might not know the difference. You need to let the (charter) company explain to you what they offer and what kind of fish you might catch. We ask them if they think they might get seasick in the ocean, and we explain what they can take if they do get seasick. We ask if they get carsick, because if they do, they will definitely get seasick. “A lot of people call cold turkey and they don’t have a clue,” she says. “When I tell them tackle is included, they ask me, ‘What is a tackle?’ I tell them that is your rods and reels and your hooks and bait. … Depending on the time of year they plan on going fishing, they should ask what’s biting. And we will tell them what their options are.” Locally, there are several areas where recreational boat owners can launch their boats, canoes, kayaks or other personal watercraft. Boaters and experienced kayakers who enjoy taking a nice cool dip in the water can make their way to St. Catherines Sound. It’s a spot where many of the locals bask on the shoreline of St. Catherines Island. Its wide sandy beach is nearly 11 miles long; however, the interior of the island is privately owned and off limits.

Need to get away but don’t have the time or money to take a full vacation? Well, you’re in luck because the Southeast has tons of great vacation spots within driving distance from Liberty County. Midway residents Jordan and Jessie Trump have visited many of those spots. Whether you only have one day for your adventure or you need a full weekend getaway for ample relaxation, here’s a list of the best places for your staycation — no matter what your budget looks like.

Tybee Island Chatham County’s Tybee Island, just over an hour away from Hinesville past Savannah’s east side, offers staycationers on a budget plenty of entertainment, educational and culinary options. Nature walks and other exploratory treks are available through the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, and many vendors have personal watercraft available for rent.

T

here’s more than just sunbathing, sand castles and swimming at Tybee Island. The Trumps have visited Tybee Island, and they agree Tybee has much to offer. For those who are looking for a little more adventure, Tybee Island rents kayaks, Jet Skis, stand-up paddleboards and surfboards.

“I bought a Groupon for AOK Watersports, and I am planning to do some yoga paddleboarding classes,” Jessie says. “They sound really fun, and I can’t wait.” The Tybee Island Marine Science Center, open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, teaches visitors responsible stewardship of natural resources through marine science-based education, conservation and research.

The center offers three hands-on experiences for $10 per person. Beach-discovery walks allow guests to join a marine science educator for one hour to learn about Coastal Georgia’s tides, dunes and wildlife. Meanwhile, marsh treks give guests the opportunity to spend one hour exploring the jewels in Georgia’s salt marshes. And during turtle treks, guests learn about anatomy, nesting

habits and Tybee’s conservation efforts for 90 minutes. The center also includes a Coastal Georgia gallery, which features baby alligators, spider crab, puffer, horseshoe crab and more. To enter the gallery, admission is $4 for adults and $3 for children. Tybee has lots of options for the fisherman at heart, including fishing piers, offshore charters and deep-sea charters. For those who prefer retail over fishtails, Tybee is home to several talented and imaginative artists, many of whom own unique shops and galleries, where visitors can purchase jewelry, paintings, gifts, furniture pieces and more. Families also can spend time learning about history at Fort Pulaski, which President Calvin Coolidge established as a national monument in 1924. In 1861, 134 men from the state militia seized the fort before Georgia

officially seceded from the Union on January 19, 1861. The fort was kept under Confederate control for more than a year until “Union Brig. Gen. Quincy Adams Gillmore began his assault against the Confederate soldiers in the fort,” according to tybeeisland.com. “After 30 hours of mortars and rifled canons bombarding the fort, a breach was made in the southeast wall,” which forced surrender. The fort was then used to house the captured Confederate prisoners. “We have been to Pulaski a few times, and we have taken many guests as well,” Jessie says. “They do tours of the fort and share some really fun and interesting facts and stories. There are great views along the top level. The grounds are dog friendly, so we usually take our two dogs and make a day out of it.” Jessie explains that there are more than 20 miles of walking trails with scenic views. She says they often see deer running around when they visit. Jordan says he likes how the fort has a moat around it with little bridges for interior access. He also likes seeing the cannons on the grounds. After a long day of watersports, learning and walking, Tybee offers more than 25 restaurants from which to choose. Seafood lovers can enjoy catch-of-the-day specials at many of the eateries. Fort Pulaski, located on Cockspur Island about 15 miles away from Savannah’s historic district, can provide staycationers with a full day’s worth of historic fun and excitement. The national monument features 20 miles of walking trails with scenic views, artifacts, drawbridges and indoor exhibits.

Cumberland Island

I

f you need to reconnect with nature, this is the place for you. This island “is one of the largest undeveloped barrier islands along the Atlantic Coast,” according to the National Park Service website. “The island has one of the largest maritime forests remaining in the United States and one of the largest wilderness areas in a national seashore on the East Coast.” One of the most popular parts of Cumberland Island is the wildlife. The island is inhabited by loggerhead sea turtles, birds, armadillos, hogs and horses. The horses, which roam freely along the island, are one of Cumberland’s most sought-after sights.

Historical spots on the island include the Dungeness Ruins, a four-story tabby home constructed by Revolutionary War hero Gen. Nathanael Greene’s widow; the First African Baptist Church, which was the site of the 1996 wedding of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette; and Plum Orchard Mansion, a 20,000-square-foot Georgian Revival mansion.

There are more than 50 miles of hiking trails on the island. The trails go through the maritime forest, sand dunes, past salt marshes and freshwater swamps. There is a lands-and-legacy tour available to visitors for an extra cost of $15 for adults and $12 for

seniors and children. On this tour, park staffers take visitors on five-hour motorized tours of the north end of the island. Stops include both natural and cultural sites. Reservations should be made by calling 882-4335. There also is a footsteps tour, which does not require an extra fee. This ranger-guided tour is conducted daily at 10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. The tour of the Dungeness Historic District lasts about an hour and covers 1 mile. Other tours also are available for those interested. Visitors are asked to wear comfortable walking shoes, pack a lunch or snacks and drinking water, use bug repellent and wear sunscreen. Jordan and Jessie enjoy hiking and being outdoors; however, they haven’t had the chance to visit Cumberland Island yet. It is on their list of places to check out in the future. The main way to get on the island is by ferry boat. Passage aboard the Cumberland Queen Ferry is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and older and $14 for children 12 and younger. From March 1 to Nov. 30, the ferry departs St. Marys at 9 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. daily and departs from Cumberland Island at 10:15 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. daily. From March 1 to Sept. 30, there also is a 2:45 p.m. departure from Cumberland Island on Wednesday through Saturday. Cumberland Island charges an entrance fee that is separate from the concession ferry fee. This fee, which is $4 for adults older than 15, is paid when you check in and is good for seven days. The fee may be waived if a visitor is a holder of a federal lands recreation pass.

ust an hour and 15 minutes south of Liberty County, Jekyll Island, which offers an array of activities, is a great spot for an overnight staycation. Guests are charged $6 per vehicle to enter the island but do not have to pay for parking during their stay. Jekyll Island has some of the best beaches, including Driftwood Beach, which is located on the north side of the island. It is known for its great ocean views and beautiful driftwood. Some even call this beach a Gothic tree graveyard. It’s also a great spot for photography. The Trumps love visiting Jekyll Island with their two dogs. “The beaches are beautiful,” Jessie says.

Jekyll Island has some of the best beaches, including Driftwood Beach, which is located on the north side of the island.

“It’s never too crowded. We love going to Driftwood Beach to take pictures. I’ve never seen anything like it. We love to climb on the driftwood trees and watch waves.” Other beaches include Great Dunes, which houses bocce ball and volleyball courts, and Glory Beach, which includes a long, attractive boardwalk. Along Jekyll’s beaches, many have found hermit crabs, sand dollars and even washed-up sea creatures. But there is more to this island than just the beaches. Jekyll Island is home to the only sea turtle hospital of its kind in Georgia. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center works through rehabilitation, research and education “to increase the awareness of habitat and wildlife conservation challenges,” according to jekyllisland.com. This center is a hospital for ill and injured sea turtles. It is open to the public at a cost of $7 for adults

and $5 for children. Guests can visit the interactive exhibit gallery to learn about the life of sea turtles. Afterward, they can visit the rehabilitation pavilion, where they can view the injured sea turtles and learn more about their recovery process. “The sea turtle center was very impressive,” Jessie says. “I learned quite a bit about different turtles, and the different factors that play into whether or not a turtle makes it to adulthood. Plus, I got to see a huge turtle being operated on. There is a viewing window to watch the staff work. He had been hit by a boat propeller, which cracked his shell. They were working hard on repairing it. It was such a cool experience.” If competition is more your thing, Jekyll is home to golf courses, tennis courts and biking trails. For the family golfers, Jekyll has 63 holes on four golf courses as well as a golf pro shop. For those who consider themselves beginners, there are two putt-putt golf courses. Meanwhile, visitors can enjoy a game of tennis on one of the 13 clay courts at the Jekyll Island Tennis Center, which welcomes beginners and advanced players. The court fee is $6 per person per session, and the tennis center offers equipment rentals as well. With more than 20 miles of biking trails, the whole family can enjoy a day of scenic views through maritime forests, the historic district and beachscapes. Visitors can bring their own bikes, or rent bikes for an inexpensive rate. If visitors get a little too warm during a biking adventure, they can head over to the Summer Waves waterpark to cool off. Jekyll is a great spot for four-legged friends. The Trumps say they always take their pets when visiting the island. “The dogs have so much fun out on the beaches,” Jessie says. “There are a couple places that have dog-height water fountains and shower spigots. There are two places that allow dogs on the outside patios, too.” With several hotels and camping areas, plus 16 restaurants offering gourmet fare, this overnight staycation is sure to include a nice mix of activities and relaxation.

Weekend Getaway • $$$

Hilton Head Island, S.C. Hilton Head Island’s Harbour Town features shops and boutiques, a multitude of restaurants, activities and a lighthouse that contains a museum and a store. Guests can climb to the top of the structure, read all about its history, admire photographs and pick up a souvenir or two.

W

ith so many of the best hotels, resorts, villas and home rentals available, guests will want to stay on this island much longer than one weekend. But even just one weekend in this beachside community is sure to be a treat. Looking for the top brands at low prices? Visitors definitely should stop by the Tanger Outlets in Bluffton while staying on 38

liberty life magazine

Hilton Head Island. But it’s not the only place with great shopping. One of the Trumps’ favorite places to visit on the island is Harbour Town. The area is full of shopping and unique restaurants, but the most interesting part is the Harbor Town Lighthouse Museum. Guests can climb the steps to the top of the lighthouse while viewing the histories of the island and lighthouse through photos, arti-

facts and music. A large collection of memorabilia from the PGA Tour’s famed RBC Heritage Classic sits near the top of the lighthouse. But the best part is the spectacular view from the top, where dolphins often can be spotted. A gift shop also sits at the top of the lighthouse and offers a large selection of lighthouse memorabilia, including art and Christmas ornaments. The Trumps recommend visiting the

Salty Dog Café in Harbour Town, which they go to every time they’re on the island. “The gift shop was awesome, because they have some old pictures of other salty dogs and a couple of parrots to welcome you,” Jordan says. “It’s a fun atmosphere.” Jessie says the cafe has indoor and outdoor seating and is in a great location with great views from the deck. “Harbour Town area is really cool,” Jessie says. “The lighthouse is fun, and the area is great. We’ve done some bike riding around and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.” Harbour Town has other adventures as well, including sightseeing and dinner cruises, all sorts of fishing trips, and water sport rentals such as water skis, power boats, standup paddleboards, banana boats and parasailing. For smaller children, the Gregg Russell Harbour Town Playground is sure to be a hit. There’s also a pirate ship for children ages 3-10. The hour-long boat trip, which requires reservations, is perfect for children wanting to search for treasure. Another adventure involves soaring through live oaks and loblolly pine trees for two hours. ZipLine Hilton Head gives guests incredible memories as they begin low and slow while harnessed into equipment and guided by trained professionals. Usually in groups of eight, adventurers zip along a cable-and-pulley system that gets higher and faster. “If was fun, and the guides were cool,” Jordan says. “The last zip of the tour is the racing zip, and it was my favorite. The guides had us all screaming, ‘Cannonball!’ as we jumped off the platforms. It was a really good time.” The course includes eight lines with

heights up to 75 feet, two suspended bridges and an aerial staircase. For thrill seekers like Jordan, the zip line ends with a 900-foot dual-cable racing finish. “One of the platforms is actually the tallest structure on all of Hilton Head Island,” Jessie says. “The guides are amazing. They are funny and engaging. They take safety very seriously, while also doing their absolute best to ensure you have the greatest experience possible. They tell you how to go faster (or) slower, how to stop and when to scream. I have never left with even a hint of getting less than my money’s worth.” The Broad Creek Marina Adventures also has six aerial adventure challenge courses for all ages, a rock-climbing wall and a bungee trampoline. Reservations are preferred, but not required. Another escapade available on Hilton Head Island includes horseback riding at Sea Pines Forest Preserve, where guests can take escorted trail rides through the preserve. Horseback riding is scheduled daily yearround for adults and children 8 and older. Reservations are required. For younger children, Lawton Stables has a small animal farm, free to the public. Shetland ponies also give rides to children 7 and

younger for a small fee. After such an adventure, guests may want nothing but rest and relaxation. Hilton Head houses several world-class full-service spas with specialty treatments and packages. The Heavenly Spa by Westin features private treatment rooms, lounges with saunas and steam rooms, a whirlpool and a full-service salon. The spa is open to the public and welcomes anyone looking for facials, massages, manicures, pedicures or just an overall sense of peace and harmony.

ZipLine Hilton Head lets visitors to the island admire the sights and sounds while soaring through live oak and loblolly pine trees for up to two hours. The course includes eight lines with heights up to 75 feet, two suspended bridges and an aerial staircase. The “grand finale” features a 900-foot dual-cable racing finish.

ith more than 150 hotels to choose from and hundreds of restaurants serving the best Southern food Georgia has to offer, Savannah is a great choice for a weekend getaway. The Trumps love exploring the streets of Savannah and popping in and out of all the local shops. “We have found that Savannah is full of so many fun, little shops with very friendly people and employees,” Jessie says. “There are shops with different sweets that they will let you sample, plus souvenir, gift and clothing stores. Of course, there’s also Leopold’s Ice Cream, which is a must every time we’re wan-

dering downtown.” For great shopping and a variety of restaurants, visitors can walk down River Street, City Market and Broughton Street — all of which are full of unique shops, candy stores where they make fresh treats right in front of

When your dogs start barking and it’s time for some rest, hop on a horse-drawn carriage to continue exploring with the charming sound of the horseshoes meeting the cobblestone beneath you. Savannah is home to so many beautiful historic attractions and sites, it would be hard to pack them all into one visit. The city also offers horse-drawn carriage rides, an array of tours and endless restaurant options.

companies even offer haunted tours to make the hairs on the back of guests’ necks stand up. Some guides will dress in costume. There also are romantic tours for two that offer champagne. For history buffs, Savannah is a fantastic location to visit — the city is full of rich history and even some frightening tales. Visitors can sit inside a trolley car to experience Savannah at its best and learn all there is to know about Georgia’s first city. The Old Savannah Tours company offers a 90-minute historic overview tour, a full-day historic tour, a Savannah experience tour, a historic haunts tour and a landand-sea tour. Prices vary depending on the tour, but the company offers many discounts. But what about those who are more into Hollywood than history? Savannah has provided the setting for more than 87 movies since 1962. Tours of movie locations are available

year-round for visitors of all ages. Prices vary depending on the tour company. Jordan and Jessie like to incorporate a horse-and-carriage ride with history and haunting. The couple has been on several tours in Savannah, including a ghost tour and a historic tour, but their favorite is a horse-drawn carriage ride through downtown Savannah on Christmas Eve.

Another great spot to visit during your stay in Savannah is the Oatland Island Wildlife Center, which is home to dozens of animals, including bison, cougars, bobcats, foxes, owls, hawks, snakes, alligators, armadillos and more.

“Our guide asked us if we wanted more haunting stories or more historic information,” Jessie says. “We said both, and we got both. It was amazing. Our guide couldn’t have been better. He had a blanket for us in case we got cold, and the horse was beautiful. Every single minute of the ride was interesting. We really enjoyed the tour, and we highly recommend it for both people new to Savannah and to people who have lived here forever.” Wormsloe Historic Site is another location famous for the views of the live oak trees lining the entrance. Many stop just to take photos, but inside guests can learn all about the plantation. Visitors can view a museum with artifacts from Wormsloe, watch a short film about the site and interact with costumed interpreters who exhibit the tools and skills of colonial Georgia. Another great spot to visit during your stay in Savannah is the Oatland Island Wildlife Center, which is home to dozens of animals, including bison, cougars, bobcats, foxes, owls, hawks, snakes, alligators, armadillos and more. The wildlife center also has a farm section with goats, pigs, sheep, donkeys and chickens. The center is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Tickets for seniors, military personnel and students are $3.

Hometown diversity

A plethora of cultures make Liberty County unique, welcoming

T

here is no question that for the past 75 years, Fort Stewart’s soldiers and their families have brought sounds, flavors and fashions from around the globe to Liberty County. “Hinesville is a unique place. Because of the diversity, people here are more open and accepting. It makes it easier to blend or fit in,” Gabriele “Gabby” Hartage says. She is a German bride to an America soldier. “I am proud of my heritage. Both of my children speak German,” she says. “I’ve been trying to teach my granddaughter, but she has

not been into it. My son and daughter went to Germany during summer vacations. My mother and sister took them places and they played with their cousins. My daughter just went to Germany for her cousin’s wedding.” Hartage, a zoning administrator with the Liberty Consolidated Planning Commission who lives in Hinesville, says that she visits Germany, and her mother and sister visit her in the United States. She often calls and emails her sister, and she and her mother talk on the phone every Sunday. “My mother is a talker. I miss my mother, especially now that she is older. She is 80,”

says Hartage, who added that she also was influenced by her father, who once told her that Germans were set in in their ways, and that he liked the American mentality. “I feel both German and American,” she says. “My husband, Ray, is a picky eater, and my daughter makes fun of German food, so we eat American food.” Gabriele “Gaby” Chaffee jokes, “My husband, Adna, always says he married me for my (German) cooking. I use the stovetop for almost everything. I only use the oven for baking.” Chaffee spends her Friday evenings with

children grew up the way I did, like a German,” she says. “My husband, Thomas, who was an American, spoke fluent German. I am a traditional German. When you marry, you follow your husband.” Howard followed her spouse as his duty assignments oscillated between the United States and Germany. The Howards came to Hinesville in 1984. Thomas retired in 1989. “We were only married 25 years, but people here were so kind to me when Thomas was sick and after he died that I wanted to stay here. Hinesville had become my home,” Howard says. “This community was so good to me, I try to give back every way that I can.” Although Howard maintains U.S. citizenship, she says she goes “home” to Germany once a year. When her German family and friends see her, they think she acts American. When she is with American friends, they think she acts German.

Hinesville’s Small World Festival, held annually in celebration of the numerous countries and cultures represented in the area, features a wide variety of entertainment acts, including dancers, singers, step teams and musicians. The event, typically staged in May, also includes a world marketplace and an international food court.

“Whatever we say, we mean. That is how Germans are,” Howard says. When her American friends come over, “I treat them like they are German,” she says. In Hinesville, there is a group of German women who get together around Mother’s Day and on the first Sunday of Advent for coffee, cakes and cookies. Howards says the women also sing German songs during their visits. “We are friends for life,” she says. “It’s not that you have to see each other every day.”

five other German women, sharing coffee and fellowship, and sometimes playing games. Chaffee also remains devoted to one of Europe’s most beloved games — football (known as soccer in the United States). Shortly after arriving in Hinesville in 1988, she began coaching youth soccer. Twenty-five years later, she is still going strong. The eight children in the Chaffee family do not keep up with German traditions with the possible exception of St. Nicholas Day, which falls annually on Dec. 6. However, one of Chaffee’s daughters is fluent in the language. “My children were raised like I was,” Chaffee says. “The children changed (took American citizenship), because dual citizenship was not available. But I am not changing.” “Everything in Germany is proper,” Gabriele “Gabie” Howard says. “You do what your grandmother and your mother did. My

oward does think it’s easier and less expensive to live in the United States, and it’s not hard to keep in touch with loved ones overseas. In fact, she talks with one of her sisters every day either by text message, telephone or Skype. “I’m the only one (from my family) in the U.S., but siblings, aunts, uncles and friends come to visit,” Howard says. Chaffee often calls and writes to friends in Germany. She says that even though some things have

changed, she feels like a native when she is on German soil. Hartage, on the other hand, thinks all of the changes have distanced her from her native land. “I remember one of my teachers telling my class ‘The (Berlin) Wall will never come down.’ But the wall fell while I’ve been here (in the U.S.),” Hartage says. “Here is my home now. I feel like a visitor when I go to Germany. Even so, I will never lose my accent.”

ennifer Song and a group of three other Korean women see each other on Friday mornings for Eucharistic liturgy at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Hinesville. Although the prayer books offer services in English and Korean, Father Daniel Lee conducts the entire Rite II service in Korean. He leads the women in songs sung without an organ or a large choir. It’s just Lee and four faithful Army brides in the sanctuary, singing praises heard throughout the church. These ladies also come to the lectern to share readings from the Old and New testaments and the Psalms. Lee reads the Gospel lesson, offers a sermon and then proceeds through the rituals of Holy Communion. After worship, the four head to the local McDonalds for a meal and fellowship. The friends take turns buying breakfast for each other. 46

the attendees to decrease the amount of cooking they have to do for the week. Most of the women say they prefer Korean food, but Song admits that she has become fond of America food. After some prodding from the other women, Song giggles and says, “I love steak, I cannot help it.” These brides, all of whom have been in Hinesville for more than two decades, explain that they often prepare “fusion food.” Their husbands and children are “American,” so meals often are half Korean and half American. It is challenging to find the items needed for Korean cooking. Song says she goes to Atlanta a couple times per year to buy dishes and spices. In Hinesville, there are two Korean stores, two Korean restaurants and one Korean beauty shop.

The women say that their children understand the language and sometimes spoke it at home. Direct TV offers 10 Korean channels, which include current TV shows, religious programming and movies. When asked what she misses about Korea, Song Charpentier sums it up with one word — “Everything!” she exclaims. Song, who grew up in Seoul, South Korea, says the nation has more flea markets, and she enjoys the banter of negotiation. Public transportation also is more established in Korea. Song traveled to Korea more often while

her parents were living. Now, though, she says she usually only goes back for weddings or big events. Charpentier says text messages, Skype, Facebook and an app called Kokoda Talk are free communication tools that allow the women to stay in touch with family and friends. They often rely on the phone as well. These women are Christian, but they explained that some area Koreans who are not Christians often attend worship services just for the fellowship. There also is a local association of Korean people who come together twice a year for picnics and on Korean holidays.

asit and Nital Patel enjoy sharing their Indian culture and Hindu practices with their daughters. Nital Patel takes Diya, 11, and Mahi, 4, to Swami Narayann Mandir temple on Sundays. She says there are religious and cultural events throughout the year at the Savannah temple. The family also has a small temple in their Flemington home, where they pray and light candles. In March, they celebrated the Hindi New Year for five days. Every fall, the Garba Navrati festival spans nine days. Due to work schedules, though, Nital says local Hindus usually break the celebration in to two or three weekends. “The girls look forward to Garba all year long,” she says. She and her daughters love to dress in traditional colorful Indian clothes and dance. “My mother and my mother-inlaw go to India every year to visit family and friends and to buy clothing.” Diya, a student at Joseph Martin Elementary, recently did a report on Indian culture. She shared history, photos and clothing with her classmates.

Nital’s parents moved their family to Virginia when she was 14, so she attended school in the United States as well. “It was difficult to adjust in the beginning,” she says. “You can read and write, but it is difficult to speak.” When it comes to certain American pastimes, the Patels have some options. Dish Network offers eight channels with Indian programming. “You feel like you are back home when you watch current shows,” says Nital, who, earlier this year, returned to India for nearly a month to celebrate her brother’s wedding. In addition to religious events in the Coastal Georgia area, there is a volleyball league for Indian men. “Even if they don’t play, they go to socialize,” Hasit says. The Indian community maintains a directory of Indians living in the United States through a nonprofit called Leuva Patidar Samaj of USA (LPSofUSA.com). The listing divides people by castes. “We looked to see if there were any Patels in our caste in Liberty County before we moved here,” Hasit says. “There was just one

Although he grew up in East Africa, Hasit knows his Indian roots and family members from the village where his parents were raised. Some villages have reunions in the United States every two years. “Everyone pretty much knows each other. It’s mainly for the kids to get to know more people,” Hasit says. A regional convention in Savannah currently is planned for early July.

Southern Living in Liberty County

Liberty County Board of Commissioners Donald Lovette, Chairman Dist. 1, Marion Stevens, Sr. Dist. 2, Justin L. Frasier Dist. 3, Connie Thrift Dist. 4, Pat Bowen Dist. 5, Gary Gilliard Dist. 6, Eddie J. Walden

Left to Right: Bowen, Stevens, Gilliard, Chairman Lovette, Thrift, Walden, Frasier.

Liberty County is blessed with an abundance of southern beauty and charm, but more importantly, we’re blessed to be home to Fort Stewart and soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division. These defenders of freedom have found a home of welcome and respect. 3rd Infantry Division soldiers are a vital part of this community and that makes Liberty County a great place to live. Thousands of retiring veterans have discovered Liberty County as a great place to live for a lifetime. Southern charm and hospitality abound. Step back from

the hustle of the business world and find yourself in a way of life that few have the opportunity to experience. All roads lead to Liberty County. { LIFE’S A PEACH }

The Midnight Raid Holiday trip to St. Simons Island turns suspenseful { By Debra Ayers Brown }

T

here’s a saying: “If walls could talk.” Well, ours yelled during a July 4th weekend at St. Simons Island when Allen and I took our daughter Meredith and her friend Maria with us on vacation. Boy, did we get fireworks! Independence Day on St. Simons Island started like any other near-perfect day on the beach. Seagulls wheeled overhead. A warm, salty breeze ruffled my hair. Colorful kites soared against a cloudless blue sky as children played at the water’s edge. I tried to keep my eye on Meredith and Maria. When these 13-yearolds got together, the unexpected happened. In no time, our day on the beach turned into pizza for dinner in our two-bedroom condo and then a walk down the shore to get a better look at the fireworks. When we finally returned to the condo, Allen and I were exhausted. But not the girls. They had energy to spare. So we went to bed, leaving them in the living room. I tried to ignore their voices seeping through the walls because I was so tired. But when their laughter reached a decibel that caused Allen to toss and turn, I groaned and threw off the covers. I found Meredith and Maria munching on popcorn and playing Scrabble using Japanese words. I couldn’t understand what they were saying, but they seemed to be having a lot of fun. Too much. “Want a Coke, mama?” Meredith asked and

sipped her fizzy drink. Maria leaped to her feet and cranked up the radio. “Dance with us, Mrs. Brown!” She pulled Meredith up and they sashayed around the room, belting out song lyrics.

“I’m going to knock the door down at the count of five. If the door isn’t opened by then, it’s coming down!”

“Be quiet! You’re going to wake everyone in the beach club, including your dad,” I said. They returned to their game, and I crawled back in bed. I tried to keep my temper down when I had

to get up again while the girls were aerobicizing to hip-hop music. I warned them one last time, and they moved to the bathroom to brush their teeth and get ready for bed. “Thank goodness,” I mumbled before drifting off. In no time, I awoke with a start to the ringing of the doorbell. Who could that be at this time of night? I wondered as my heart thundered. “Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Brown, HELP!” I shot out of the bedroom in my nightgown, no contacts, and my hair a rat’s nest. Meredith and Maria stood by the entrance, wide-eyed with fright, as someone banged on the door. “Who’s there?” Meredith squeaked out as she leaned toward the peephole. “We know you’re in there!” A gruff male voice sounded from the other side. For a moment, I stood rooted to the floor. But then the protective mother hen kicked in. “What’s going on?” I demanded. The girls looked as dumbfounded as I felt as we heard, “I’m going to knock the door down at the count of five. If the door isn’t opened by then, it’s coming down!” Meredith and Maria’s panicked expression had to mimic my own. “Five, four …” “Wait a minute,” I yelled, muscling my way through the girls. They stood behind me, almost clinging to my legs. I peeked through the peephole but couldn’t see a thing.

“Open this door, or I’ll knock it down myself!” a man growled. “Who’s there?” I shouted. I wasn’t ready to open the door. But I didn’t want some crazed person kicking it down. “Three, two —“ I flung open the door on the count of one. We faced a sea of khaki shorts. Four barrelchested cops looked grim. One gripped a night stick. Another shifted his stance. Even in beachpatrol attire, they had guns strapped to their belts. “What is the problem, officers?” I asked. “Have you seen this man?” A cop held up a license. “He was seen entering this building earlier. We assumed he came here because of the party going on.” He looked around and saw only me with Meredith and Maria peeking around me. No partygoers in sight. I took the license and held it close to my face. “No, we’ve never seen him, but what party are you talking about?” I was completely confused. “Well,” the man answered, “the one here, I mean, we heard loud music and drunken singing but …” he trailed off. “Hey!” Meredith cried. “Our singing isn’t that bad. I’m classically trained.” All of a sudden, a spark of understanding dawned in the policeman’s eyes, and he smiled, and then laughed. “Oh, I see. I have four teenage girls of my own. Just try to keep it a little quieter, and next time this won’t happen.” “Next time? There won’t be a next time,” I assured him. “But, maybe you could use your influence to get them to go to sleep.” “Not even we can do that, ma’am.” He smiled and shook his head. “Sorry to have scared you, though. Have a good night, girls. Bye now.” And with a nod, they disappeared. Allen came ambling out sleepily. “What’s going on in here?” “Go back to bed,” I said. “We’ll explain in the morning.” The next day, we filled in Allen on our neararrest by Glynn County’s finest. We laughed about it in the light of day. But truthfully, we’d been terrified. I reminded Meredith and Maria that we were lucky to come out of this situation without a police record and with our dignity somewhat intact. But, they had only one regret. “Wish we’d thought to get our picture taken with them,” Meredith said. And Maria concurred. “Without it, who’s going to believe we almost got arrested?” Fortunately, we weren’t taking a mug shot home as a vacation memento. This time. And for now, what happened at the beach, stayed at the beach.

Flemington Veterinarian Maintains Pawsitive outlook on Life Dr. Peter Winn Martin discusses perfect happiness and what makes him tick

D

r. Peter Winn Martin is the senior veterinarian at Flemington Veterinary Hospital and grew up nearby on St. Simons Island. He is the son of Marion Fleming Martin Jr., who grew up in Flemington, and Kate Jones, who grew up in Riceboro. Martin attended the Veterinary College at the University of Georgia and, while there, met his wife, Cathy — an artist, teacher, mah-jongg player and world-class cook. They have been married 35 years and have four married children, James

What is your greatest fear? My greatest fear, other than my irrational fear of large spiders, is not communicating a serious medical condition in a pet to a client in a way that they grasp the gravity of the situation. Seriously people, I don’t work on spiders or snakes. What, to you, is perfect happiness? Perfect happiness is sitting around the table with my family and worshipping with them. It reminds me of our connections and lets me look forward to when we will worship together in Heaven with those who have gone before us. What one material possession would you save in the event of a fire — assuming your family was safe? One material possession that I would save in the event of a fire would be — assuming my dogs are considered part

of what you consider my safe family — is a cherry corner cupboard that I have that was in my mother and father’s house. It reminds me of my homes. What's the best advice you've ever been given? The best advice I have ever been given is to treat other people with kindness and respect, as far as it is up to me. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? If I could change one thing about myself, I would be slightly more assertive.

What real or fictional person do you most identify with? The real/fictional person I most identify with is both: James Herriot, really Alf White, the Yorkshire veterinarian and author of “All Creatures Great and Small,” among other books about his life as a veterinarian, husband, father and friend. What is your greatest extravagance? My greatest extravagances are occasional golf club purchases and LL Bean Double L Chino trousers.

Fleming (Jenny and four daughters), Anna Winn (Brian), Ellen Louisa (Neal) and Sara Caroline (Ted). The Martins also are the “parents” of Rudy, a 10-yearold Weimaraner, and Penelope, a 3-yearold American Staffordshire terrier, both rescues. The Martins were founding members of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Statesboro, where Dr. Martin was a deacon for years. They now are members of New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Richmond Hill.

If money weren't an object, how would you spend your time? If money weren’t an object, you would still find me at my veterinary hospital and occasionally on the golf course, just like now. I might perhaps take every Monday off, rather than every other Monday. What is your favorite thing about yourself? My favorite thing about myself is my sense of humor. That would probably not be the choice of those who work with me, for my jokes are sheer punishment. What trait do you most admire in another person? I most admire humility in others, especially when combined with selflessness. What trait do you most deplore in another person? I most deplore condescension in others.

Who are your favorite musicians? My favorite musicians are the members of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: Jeff Hanna, John McEuen, Jimmy Faddon and Bob Carpenter. What are your favorite books? My favorite books are the “All Creatures Great and Small” series by James Heriott, “Redemption Accomplished and Applied” by John Murray, “True Spirituality” by Frances Schaeffer and books on the local area and history. What talent would you most like to have? I would most like to have a better singing voice and the ability to read bass clef better.
