Never forget to be alive We will stand in ceremonies wearing goofy hats, click “maybe” for 26 grad party Facebook invitations and hesitantly hug distant relatives. We will tear open cards containing $20 bills, suffer blistering sunburns on vacation or at the pool and eat ice-cream we paid far too much for. And then it will be over. Summer will have flashed by, a mere blip in our consciousness, and we will find ourselves rocketed out into college, into jobs, into our first flavoring of life on our own. We will have “done” so many things over the summer. And we will “do” so many things in our time thereafter. But how many of us will really live? I’m not talking “my heart is beating and my lungs are breathing,” living. I mean truly living. Soaking up every moment.

Saturating our senses with awareness of now. Not just doing, but also being. Do not let your calendar become your life, your days simply something to cross off, your memories only photographs, your hopes and dreams a TO DO list. In these last days of high school, and the last months of our time at home, we must drink in life with all five senses. Feel the graduation hat on your head and listen to the applause of the people you love. Click “maybe,” with sincerity, not ambivalence. Hug Aunt Myrtle with ferocity and get to know her, hear her history, her story. Shower enthusiastic “thank you’s on all those who give you gifts, and really mean it. Feel your sunburn profoundly and gratefully; it is the red welt of your youth. Taste your ice cream thor-

oughly, and share it with someone, share it with your friends, savor it, savor them. Savor it all. And when you pack your bags for college, or wherever you’re going, don’t stop living. Never become so busy shuffling resumes and joining clubs and writing papers and rushing sororities that you forget to be alive. This holds true for the rest of our lives. Do not be so focused on making money that you end up in a job you hate. Do not be so busy planning the wedding menu that you forget you’re in love. Do not be so obsessed hid-

ing behind a camera that you miss your child’s first steps. This is no time to stand back and watch. It is time to be present, to bury your toes in the grass at a concert and breathe in a thousand smiling people. It is time to participate, to daydream in full throttle, to stop living with one foot in the past and other in the future, and be here now. It is time to stop texting and start exploring, stop stalking that girl on Facebook and ask her out, stop going through the motions and break free. It is time to stand in awe of a sunset, blow bubbles like a little kid, dance in the rain, play football in the mud, go skinny dipping, suck the marrow out of life. It is time to let the summer tang of lemonade settle on your tongue. Seniors, may you always live deeply.

Seniors of 2010 give shout-outs to staff Cameron Aho: Mr. McAllister, thanks for being a great coach and teacher for the last two years of my life. Although I am a handful most of the time, you are one of my favorite teachers. Teresa Avila: Thanks to Mrs. B-L and Mrs. Topp for the discussions in the library and a shared love for the written word. Hali Ballantyne: Mrs. Sakowski, thank you so much for everything you’ve taught me. You’ve helped me discover something that I’ll never get tired of. Matt Bramon: Mr. Krull – You are the best. Keep doin’ your thing. Finite was the best math class I’ve ever had. Molly Brand: Mr. Jaycox taught me more about life than any other individual person I have ever encountered. He taught me to ask questions and think outside the box, and I was fortunate to have him as a teacher. Ally Brasier: Sarge and Colonel for helping me become the person I am today. These last four years have been really great with you two there. Rachel Brown: If I ever become a successful artist or worthwhile liver of life, it will only be because of the teaching, encouragement and guidance of Mama Senti. Riley Brown: Thank you, Mrs. Rivas, for preparing me for the business world. Collin Bueckendorf: A big thanks to Coach Seagrist for helping me realize my full potential and a bigger thanks to Mr. Seagrist for helping me cross off Chemist as a viable career option. I hope my college professors like diet green tea as much as you do. Rich Chen: Hey Mr. Lofgren… Thanks for teaching Biology and Anatomy to me. This is a great step towards my dreams of pursuing a career in medicine. Cory Clayman: Scott Brandon – you demonstrated that, although coursework can be difficult, with persistence and diligence, your knowledge of the topic will grow and you will succeed. Jessica Cohen: I would like to thank Ms. Toro for everything. She is the best theater teacher and has made such an impact on my life. You are the best role

model a girl could ask for. Sam Collier: Mr. Choate, thanks for kicking my rear into gear during AP Lit and making me realize that I still do not understand A Doll’s House at all and probably never will. Alex Creely: Thank you Mr. Marx for making sure I didn’t blow myself up the past couple of years, despite some other rather concerning incidents involving fire and chemicals. Evy Dick: Ms. Glenn, Your classroom became my home at school. Thank you for being my teacher, coach and friend. You have helped me improve my knowledge, talent and character. Advice handed out to future Lancers David Adams: Bring a snack. Eating lunch at 10:55 will not curb your appetite for the rest of the day. Rochelle Aston: Have fun, it goes by fast. Mandi Augustine: Enjoy your time here. Even if you can’t wait to get out now, the end will come sooner than you think and when it’s here, you won’t want it to be over. Ali Balducci: Enjoy your years here, but always remember that a world exists outside of this school. Leah Bartmess: Go to the library, it looks like Chipotle. Ian Bernstein: To the girls: UGGS aren’t that cool. Kayleigh Boester: Stand up for yourself at all times. Know your rights! Amy Bowen: Don’t try to have any fun that isn’t pre-approved by the administration. Kate Brandenberg: Don’t forget to get involved and meet a wide group of people. Kelli Brennan: Stay drama free! Josh Bring: Take Mrs. Peters’ classes. Emily Burgess: Never be a “freshman,” even if you’re a freshman. Mary Buttram: Savor the moments when your teachers still remind you to do your homework. And always be yourself. Lindsey Carper: What happens in high school won’t matter in college, so just have fun and then get out when you can! Michael Catanzaso: Bad cafeteria food: ham and cheese Stromboli. Do not eat that. Be sure to say “please” when ordering your meals. Amy Dickinson: The few times you actually check out a library book, don’t forget to turn it in. And hang your parking pass up! Cecilia Dorhauer: My advice would be to stay true to yourself. Don’t get caught up in trying to be something you think everyone expects you to be. Find people who want to be around the real you, have fun. This is the only life you get, so make it worth while. Jeff Drissell: My advice would be to take Senior Option in the morning so you can sleep in late. Ryan Dubberke: Do your homework and keep your grades up. Emily Duncan: Stay out of the drama and go on, it’s not that important! Chelsea Dysko: If you plan on beating the buses after school, be sure to stretch before making a mad dash to your car. Laura Dwyer: Take your GPA seriously from freshman to senior year, trust me it matters. Katie Erdal: Good luck! Ryan Finnegan: Don’t get caught. Rachel Gilman: High school is what you make it. The four years you spend here go by so fast – live it up! Austin Goodman: You gotta know people. Nowrin Haque: Just do what you love to do and don’t be afraid to step out of your bubble. These four years can be some of the best or worst years of your life but if you do what you truly want to, they will undoubtedly be four amazing years. Megan Hasenmueller: Only use the Flex hallway bathroom. Don’t waste your time in those gross ones. Carrie Helton: Don’t stop believing in yourself. You can do anything you put your mind to.

Richard Holekamp: Do some inward thinking. Reflect and get to know who you really are, not necessarily who you think you are. Christie Holland: never hold back who you are and try everything. You never want to leave LHS saying man I wish I did this or that. Go for everything and accept who you are. No one else’s opinion matters. It’ll only slow you down. Sara Holmes: Don’t procrastinate on your homework, those late nights writing five page essays and writing up AP labs just aren’t worth the few days of procrastination. Liz Hoormann: Trust me, you will not want to do any work senior year. Do it! You want to get into college, right? Shannon Horner: Find a strong, close group of friends that you can depend on. Friends can save your life in high school. Courtney Hudspeth: Enjoy your time here while you can; it will go by fast. Don’t get too caught up in drama, it’s so not worth it. Katelyn Hufton: Try hard second semester seniors Greg Huxen: Homework! Homework! Homework! Do it, or it will hurt you. Nick Judge: Try to be yourself. Katie Kaczmarczyk: Bring a hoodie – it’s always cold. And sucking up to teachers does get you far. Paige Kaprelian: Make as many memories as you possibly can. This is the last time you can get away with anything. Jerry Kayes: Really keep your priorities straight, don’t let others influence you more than they should. Timmy Kenny: Actually use the new things the school has bought: library, hallway. Kristin Kerley: Get involved in school Elle Kiely: Walk faster. Stop clogging the halls. Alexandria Killingsworth: Do not take all teachers as a joke so study and ask questions when you don’t understand. Jared King: Be excellent to each other, Party on Dudes! Taylor Larson: Don’t slack off; you may be a senior but you still need to do your work! Zach Legenzoff: Stay awake during class, it’s essential. Veronica Loewenstein: Your grades in your freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year are so important and will help you succeed in college. Be involved in school activities as well. Kellyn Marquart: Senioritis is real! Adam Maxwell: Everyone does dumb things, just try to do them outside of school. Kyle McClendon: Do not procrastinate! Clayton McCowen: Don’t give up, if there is no more complicated logic to try, look for simple things. Varun Mehrotra: Be involved. The more you put into Lafayette, the more you get out of it. Dominic Mestre: Don’t do drugs. J.T. Miller: Take flex classes! They are a life saver! Emily Mintz: Be nice to everyone, because you never know who they’ll turn out to be. Murphy Montes de Oca: Just do it. Vanyah Moore: Don’t wait until the last minute to write five page essays. A.J. Mueller: Don’t be afraid of the older kids. They are just like you, but a little more mature.

For future seniors, don’t be afraid of the teachers/principals/librarians. They are all okay if you give them a chance. Kayla Oliver: Don’t be stupid. You only have so much time in high school, college and life. Enjoy your time and the people you know now because they won’t always be there. Make the most of your life in the most simple and purest way possible. Just be yourself. Megan Otis: Leave your slack off classes, like PE and Life After High School, for your senior year. Senioritis is real! You will not want to do anything. Grace Palazzolo: Park near the preschool. You never have to walk far if the weather is bad, or in front of too many cars. And, it’s easier to get out. Chris Pavlack: Hang in there because the best part of every good show is the finale. Kristin Pfeiffer: Don’t worry about all the drama, make the most of your high school, do what makes you happy, because it doesn’t last forever. Christian Pierce: Make the most of where you are right now because it goes by pretty fast. Ken Pyland: Be quiet and do your work, it’s only four years. Rafi Ramadan: The conjugate base of a strong acid is PATHETIC. Tori Rigman: Always stay true to yourself and remember everything happens for a reason. Kathryn Rivera: Beware of the seagulls. Wendy Rogers: Try not to cram for tests. Try an art class, you never know how creative you can be. Alison Roy: flex classes are very helpful. The study halls are nice to get all your work done, or talk to your friends. Carissa Sanchez: Know your teachers well. Stop crowding the hallways. Sit outside when the weather’s nice. Actually participate in things. Jessica Selz: Don’t be dumb and your year won’t be hard. Lauren Schaper: I would tell the students to get good grades all the way through high school. Darcy Singleton: Enjoy your senior year because it goes way faster than you expect. Izel Smith: Stay on top. Natalie Spack: Be kind to everyone, no matter who they are. They really remember that. Torrie Stellern: Enjoy every moment of your senior year because it’s over before you know and be nice to everyone. Kyle Swerczek: Keep your easy classes for seniors because senioritis is not a joke! Morgan Taylor: When you do something wrong, learn from it and move on. Dorothy Vollmayer: Use the bathrooms in the new wing by the front entrance. Katie Wade: Don’t stop trying till the last day of high school. Matinah White: Don’t be lazy all of senior year because the work you put into your classes is what you get out of it. Blair Young: Take finite. Seriously, you want to be in Krull’s class. That man is a legend. Marika Zhuchenko: Keep that raincoat in your locker for those random rainy days when the fire alarms go off.
