2018 AT A GLANCE LETTER FROM THE 2018 CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD What. A. Year. 2018 was an amazing year for the Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce. Though many challenges were thrown our way, it’s truly remarkable to look back and to see how much we accomplished last year. In the wake of the worst natural disaster in the Lake Houston Area, I am proud of the fact that the Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce has been one of the leading catalysts for necessary changes in a time when our community needed us most. Through this time of peril, we utilized the opportunity to unite, enact positive change and become one collective voice for our community through our community-wide Recover Lake Houston campaigns and work from our Long Term Recovery Task Force. The accomplishments of these programs sets up the Lake Houston Area to prosper in years to come. We are a more resilient community now because of the Chamber. The entire focus of the Chamber board and staff is always to enable businesses in our community to succeed, grow and thrive, and in 2018 we did just that. It was such an honor for me to serve our community with such outstanding people and an exemplary organization. Thank you to those who worked and supported our mission in this year.

2018 HUMBLE ISD BOND
On May 5, voters approved a $575 million bond referendum to build new schools, rebuild aging facilities, renovate and repair existing school facilities, and update technology and safety enhancements.

CITY OF HOUSTON PROP A On November 6, Kingwood voters approved the implementation of Proposition A, which kept the “lockbox” intact for the dedicated funding for flooding, drainage and street improvements within the City of Houston.
FLOOD BOND On August 25, voters approved a $2.5 billion bond to remediate damage caused by hurricane Harvey in Harris County. Six of the eight precincts with the highest voter turnout included those in the Lake Houston Area.

EVENTS This was a big year for Lake Houston Area Chamber events. We hosted the inaugural YEPPIE Awards in March to honor area young entrepreneurs and professionals; we had our highest attended luncheon EVER, Teachers of the Year in March with 324 attendees; we partnered with Humble ISD in October to incorporate the inaugural 1k Kids Run into the Lake Houston 10k5k and so much more.

We were honored to have our seventh Leadership class graduate this year! The seventh class project was building a garden for HAAM to grow fresh produce for families in need. The eighth class convened for a successful first semester.

Our Alumni program allowed past Leadership graduates to tour Bender Preserve at Jesse Jones Park, helped HAAM with their Meals on Wheels program, raised enough money to donate 16 Thanksgiving meals and participated in a live “Shoot or Don’t Shoot” simulation with Precinct 4.
AWARDS
The Chamber received a Membership Achievement Award for New Member Retention in 2017 from ACCE. The Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce was named a finalist for Chamber of the Year in Category 4.
The Winter 2017 Business Matters Magazine and the 2017-2018 Community Guide & Directory, both received First Place Awards during the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives annual conference.
The Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce was honored by Insperity alongside HAAM with the Community Impact Award for our recovery work after Hurricane Harvey.
