COMMISSIONER’S MESSAGE 2014-2015

MANITOBA JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

Kim Davis Commissioner Manitoba Junior Hockey League The Manitoba Junior Hockey League is excited to bring another memorable season of Junior A hockey to its loyal fans and followers. The 2014 – 2015 season promises to be the finest ever highlighting the best that the MJHL has to offer. Once again, the RBC Cup will be hosted by the MJHL with the community of Portage la Prairie and the Portage Terriers hosting the prestigious national Junior A championship in May 2015. This is a big feather in the cap for the community of Portage and for the league. The dedicated host committee and core of volunteers will do an exceptional job of hosting this important championship event. For the 2014 – 2015 season the MJHL has re-formatted its schedule by employing a balanced schedule. All eleven teams in the league will play the other ten teams six times each (3 home, 3 away). By formatting the schedule in a balanced way it is hoped that fan attendance will increase and there will be more excitement on a regular basis in the arenas throughout the season. Last year, the MJHL launched its own Digital Advertising Network across the entire league with each team installing a large digital sign unit that allows advertisers and supporters of the league to promote their businesses through an eye catching and effective medium. As the second season operating the Digital Advertising Network gets underway the league expects interest in this enterprise to continue to grow and appeal to our corporate partners. Early indications are that there will be several exciting young players playing in the MJHL this season. I want to encourage all hockey fans to come to our arenas and watch the best exciting Junior A product in the country. On behalf of the member clubs I appreciate all members of the MJHL Community and hope all of you enjoy the 2014 – 2015 hockey season with us.

After missing the playoffs in the team’s inaugural season, the Virden Oil Capitals entered their second season in the MJHL with one goal in mind - making the post-season. After acquiring reigning MJHL goaltender of the year, Adam Iwan, championship experience in Curtis Oliver, and a proven playoff performer in Cole Hamblin, pieces were starting to fall into place for the 2013-2014 season. Virden played their home opener on September 20 against the Swan Valley Stampeders and skated their way to a 6-5 win infront of 1,239 people. As the season continued on, the Oil Caps continued to roll and found themselves in first place by a single point over the Dauphin Kings heading into the Christmas break. Virden was 21-11-2 and poised to make their first playoff appearance in team history. However, as players went home for the Christmas break, Oil Caps’ forward, Patrick D’Amico, was recalled by the Regina Pats in the WHL and the team lost a large chunk of their offense from the month of November and December. That didn’t seem to phase the team as they posted a 5-2-1 record throughout the month of January to maintain their contention for a division title. However, as February rolled around, things started to go south.

YEAR IN REVIEW

The Oil Caps had a very busy month with 16 games remaining in their schedule. The schedule took it’s toll on the players as bodies seemed to become depleted down the stretch when the games mattered most. Pretty soon, the Oil Caps found themselves looking up the standings. In their final 10 games, Virden went 2-7-1 and ended up finishing in second place, 15 points behind a Dauphin Kings squad that were gearing up for their Western Canada Cup host role. Despite stumbling into the playoffs, the Oil Caps had attained their goal that they set out to accomplish at the beginning of the season. Not only had they made the playoffs, they earned home ice advantage in a first round matchup with the Swan Valley Stampeders. After falling behind two games to none in the opening round, the Oil Caps were sparked by a crowd of 1,329 at Tundra Oil & Gas Place and beat the Stampeders 6-2 in a must win game three. Ben Williams played the hero in game four with a go ahead goal late in regulation to tie the series at 2-2. The home ice crowd proved to be the difference again in game five as Virden won that one, 4-1, and headed back to Swan Valley with a chance to win it. A back-and-forth battle in game six, the game made it’s way into overtime. The first overtime solved nothing with chances at both ends of the ice. Finally it was 20-year-old forward, Artsiom Kalashnikov, who snapped a puck home to give the Oil Caps the dramatic first-round series win and the first series win in Oil Caps history. A rested Dauphin Kings squad were ready for Virden after dismantling of the OCN Blizzard in four games. The Kings continued their strong play in round two and bounced the Oil Caps from the division final in a four game sweep. Some great steps were taken in year two for the Oil Caps organization. New levels of expectations are now in place as the franchise looks to take another step in the forward during the 2014-2015 season. - Lindsey Gullett

League Moves to One Division Press Release - June 11, 2014

MANITOBA JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

All 11 member teams of the MJHL will be placed in one division effective this coming season, Commissioner Kim Davis announced today. Teams had previously been placed in either the Addison or Sher-Wood Divisions. Moving forward, teams will play a balanced 60-game schedule, playing against each other six times (three home/three away). “The new, one-division format and change to our playoff format was decided at our recent Board of Governors’ meeting held recently in Winkler,” said Davis. “It’s been well received and we believe our fans will enjoy our new look.” A total of 10 teams will make the playoffs. Teams finishing seventh to 10 will participate in separate, best-of-three Survivor Series to determine playoff seeding. The seventh-place team will play No. 10, while No. 8 will face off against No. 9. Winners then move on to the regular playoff format which will be best-of-seven series: 1st playing 8th, 2nd vs 7th, 3rd vs 6th and 4th vs 5th. - mjhlhockey.ca

Oil Caps Team Awards Most Valuable Player 2013-14: Corey Haverstick 2012-13: Sean Collins 2013-14 Script: A case could be made for any of this year’s finalists. However, this player found a way to contribute consistently throughout the entire season. He was twice named the Oil Caps Player of the Month and recently received a player of the month runner-up for the MJHL February award. His 10 power play goals on the season ranked him third overall in the category for the league. Congratulations to Corey Haverstick on being named this season’s MRC Global Most Valuable Player. Presented by: Keith Hunt

Most Community-Minded 2013-14: Kyler Beckett & Rob Newton 2012-13: Cody Nelson

2013-14 Script: The Oil Capitals are fortunate to have several individuals who this award could easily be given to. Throughout the season, the team is involved in breakfast club, the Virden CanSkate program, volunteered to deliver Christmas Cheer hampers, and could be found at schools across Westman during the month of February reading to elementary school children. Tonight’s award is being given to two people. Kyler Beckett has been a tremendous ambassador for the Oil Caps ever since joining the team last season. He’s been willing to volunteer at events whenever he’s been asked and has done so without question. Our second recipient tonight was added to the team earlier this season and has been an instant leader in the dressing room and the community. Like Kyler, he’s always willing to help out wherever possible and is a tremendous role model for his teammates and the young kids in the community. Congratulations to Rob Newton and Kyler Beckett for being the recipients of this year’s Sunrise Credit Union Most Community-Minded Player award. Presented by: Gene Pielechaty

Three Stars Award 2013-14: Corey Haverstick

2013-14 Script: This player was an easy target on any night when the Oil Caps had success which is evident by the team’s record of 16-7-0 when he found the back of the net. His total three star points on the year came to 27, five points higher than the next closest player. Congratulations to Corey Haverstick for winning this year’s Altus Geomatics Three Stars Award. He played with a hard-nosed style of play along with being a threat to put the puck in the net. We look forward to seeing his career continue to grow in the coming seasons. Congratulations! Presented by: Lawrence Souter

Fan Choice Award 2013-14: Kyler Beckett 2012-13: Kyler Beckett 2013-14 Script: This year’s award had some great input this season with almost 500 votes casted by the fans during the in game voting sessions and on the Oil Caps new app. After all was recorded and accounted for, Kyler Beckett emerged as this year’s Fountain Tire Fan Choice Award recipient for the second straight year. Congratulations Kyler. Presented by: Mandy Taylor

Hardest Worker 2013-14: Ben Williams 2012-13: Devan Schram 2013-14 Script: The hardest working player is an award that comes with great honour. Everyone hockey player is required to work hard, but to be recognized for that consistency on a nightly basis over the course of a 60 game schedule is something to be proud of. It should come as no surprise to the Oil Caps faithful, that this year’s award recipient for the HomeLife Professional Realty Hardest Worker is Ben Williams. a Salute to our billets Since the Oil Caps inagural season, the team has been extremely fortunate to have one of the best group of supporting billet families in all of Junior hockey across Canada. Players have travelled from across North American and have been welcomed into the Virden community of just over 3,000. Without billets, our team could not operate. We thank you, the billet families, for creating a home away from home for our players. This year, we have been able to create a new way to recognize our billets by teaming up with Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries IMPACT Team to award one billet family each month with an appreciation gift pack. Visit OilCapsHockey.com for the latest news on who this month’s MLL IMPACT Billet of the Month Family is.

OIL CAps Unveil ‘Digger’ The Virden Oil Capitals teamed up with TSL Industries over the summer to bring to life the latest addition to the Oil Caps line-up, Digger! The roly-poly gopher character was created based on the local oil industry amongst our flat-land prairies. The gopher, similar to the oil industry, has a natural digging nature. Decorated with work boots and a hard hat, Digger appears each night after a hard days work in the oil field.

TSL’s Marianne Ludlam, her son Will, and his friend Luc Plett along with Digger drop the puck for Dauphin Captain, Cody Nelson, and Oil Caps’ Captain, Ben Williams to honour Digger’s first game.

The name Digger was picked from over 30 different entries during the regionwide naming contest that took place during the fall. Classrooms were asked to submit a name and a reasoning behind their submission in order to win their class a pizza party and a night out with the Oil Caps on December 6th during the third annual TSL Teddy Bear Toss. Six different classrooms submitted the name ‘Digger’. They were Mrs. Georgina Pierce’s Grade 1/2 class from Melita, Mrs. Amy Schiltroth’s Grade 3 class and Mrs. Jane Chandler’s Grade 1 class from Goulter School in Virden, Ms. Rachel Svistovski’s Grade 4/5 class from Souris, and Mrs. Leah Obach’s Grade 2 class from Hamiota. Congratulations to these classes and thank you to everyone who submitted a name for the contest.
