Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2019 Pride Guide! Fifty years ago, the New York Police Department attempted to raid the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street, a safe haven for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. But that night the patrons fought back, and started the uprising that we now know as the Stonewall Riots, led by transgender and lesbian activists of color. This moment marked the start of our modern LGBTQ rights movement. In that spirit, we are proud to announce that the Center’s 2019 Pride theme is Looking Back, Marching Forward. We have accomplished much in the past half century, but as we see almost daily, we must continue to fight for the rights we have achieved. There is still a lot of work to be accomplished, but we also need to pause, look back, and honor how far we’ve come. Building on last years’ success, this year we are again having a full month of activities that focus on advocacy, empowerment, education, and of course, celebration. This has been a significant year of growth for the Center, but also a difficult year due to the constant threats to our safety and wellbeing. We must continue to unite and fight back. We must not be silent. As you may know, in February 2004 the same-sex weddings performed by New Paltz Mayor Jason West and local clergy pushed the LGBTQ community to the forefront of public consciousness in New York and across the nation. Those weddings led to the first New Paltz Pride March & Festival held in June 2005, which in turn led to the formation of the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center. We have two extraordinary individuals who have had significant impact on our community as our Pride Marshals: Rae Leiner, co-founder and Co-Director of the Newburgh LGBTQ+ Center, and Denise Oliver-Velez, an activist, community organizer, and professor. This year we have over a dozen events that include a blow-out dance party, our Opening Reception and Volunteer Recognition, an art opening of Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ “The Out List,” a community picnic in Poughkeepsie, a youth dance party, and a know your rights forum. We hope you will join us. Check out the Pride Guide for information about all events and activities. Complete details are also available at www.lgbtqcenter.org/pride and social media. Join the Pride conversation online by tagging your posts and photos with #HVPride. From all of us at the Center, we wish you a happy and joyous Pride Month. In Unity,

Jeff Rindler Executive Director 5

STATE OF NEW YORK OFFICE OF THE STATE COMPTROLLER 110 STATE STREET ALBANY, NY 12236

June 2, 2019 Jeff Rindler, Executive Director Hudson Valley LGBTQ Center 300 Wall Street Kingston, NY 12401 Dear Friends: Greetings to all those gathered today for the annual Pride March & Festival hosted by the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center. Since 2005, the Center has been devoted to serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community of the Hudson Valley area, providing vital services, creating safe spaces, and cultivating a vibrant, caring community. Inspired by the campaign for marriage equality, the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center has helped institutionalize the activist spirit, pride and unifying energy of that historic moment. In addition to advocating on behalf of LGBTQ people and advancing civil rights, the Center offers a wide variety of programs and services to address immediate challenges and support the aspirations of the Valley’s diverse residents. These include regular meetings around shared interests, ranging from parents of toddlers to senior citizens, outdoor enthusiasts and arts fanatics, recovery groups and support for teens, social justice organizing and the Well-Being Institute. The annual Pride March & Festival, which kicks off a month of celebratory activities, has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Center’s busy calendar. The dedicated officers, board, staff, volunteers and supporters of the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center are bringing people together and building a brighter future in New York State. Best wishes for a joyful celebration and continued success. Sincerely,

Thomas P. DiNapoli State Comptroller
