A Letter from Our Chair

By Fred Wacker, Chair, Lake Forest Open Lands Association

Dear Friends of LFOLA, It’s hard to forget how we all felt as Spring unfolded one year ago. We were deep in our efforts to navigate the uncertainty of 2020. As with so many organizations, Lake Forest Open Lands was challenged in many ways to keep our conservation enterprise moving forward. Reimagining how to conduct outdoor events that have traditionally defined our place in the community. Revamping our education programming to connect residents of all ages with nature. Instituting a new operating model based upon our staff working from home. While so many other places closed their doors last year, Lake Forest Open Lands was determined to keep our nature preserves open for you. Last year people needed a connection to nature more than ever, for physical health, for mental well-being, to see a friend or get a break from being indoors. Our paramount goal was to remain safely open and to welcome all people to Think Outside. And we did just that! With all our pivots and shifts and reimagining and collective planning, 2020 turned out to be a very good year for our organization. Why? It was a good year because memberships were strong and donations remained solid. That is certainly a welcome affirmation that the work we do is deeply appreciated! More important, our staff stayed healthy and our community stayed connected through nature and access to the outdoors. We were so pleased to continue the tradition of Bagpipes & Bonfire by connecting us all in new ways, as the pipers playing simultaneously throughout our communities and takeaway meals were provided to ensure that our fire burned brightly at home. Our nature preserves were visited more than ever. And of course, we continued our increased investment in on-the-ground restoration and saw the results in the health of our nature preserves. These are accomplishments from last year we can all feel good about. This year will be exciting for our organization. We continue to find meaningful ways to celebrate our land’s indigenous history which, thanks to you, is preserved in perpetuity. We continue to connect more people with nature as we work to expand access to our preserves, and actively pursue the permanent preservation of even more open space. We also hope to literally build a bridge to nature in our future nature preserve in McCormick Ravine as well. Stay tuned! More than ever before there is now a broad recognition, locally and nationally, of the key role that local land trusts play in our collective future. A future that continues to depend upon you to help in building new bridges to nature. With heartfelt appreciation,

Fred Wacker Chair, Lake Forest Open Lands Association SUMMER 2021 GRASS ROOTS

PRESERVATION

+

RESTORATION Through our land preservation efforts, we have saved, restored, and now care for some of the finest landscapes in northeastern Illinois. When visiting Lake Forest Open Lands’ preserves you will experience remnant prairie, savanna, wetland, upland woodland and lakeshore ravine habitats. These are home to some of our state’s rarest and most diverse plant, animal and bird species. These areas within our community are not only beautiful, but serve a critical role in enhancing biodiversity and contributing to a healthy planet beyond our borders. Our team of dedicated restoration ecologists cares for the land, spreading native seeds, attacking relentless invasive species, monitoring bird boxes, or planting trees. We also continually improve our existing preserves through trail maintenance, boardwalks and bridges. However, people are the most important part of the conservation equation and we work hard to ensure that all people have access to and can enjoy a connection to nature. Our work is important, rewarding, and ongoing. After all, Lake Forest Open Lands is in the forever business.

A Bridge to Nature ACTING LOCALLY, THINKING GLOBALLY In 2020 we embraced the words “Think Outside” more than ever before. We appreciated access to our open spaces for physical health, mental well-being, or to simply get a break from home. Lake Forest Open Lands’ goal throughout the year was to keep our preserves open for all people. We needed a bridge to nature. Our actions last year also illustrated how the work we do is a bridge to nature that reaches beyond our borders. We continued to offer programs that connected youth from diverse places and backgrounds with nature. We helped lead initiatives of the Prairie State Conservation Coalition. And we partnered with others to support efforts related to Lake Michigan watersheds and coastal change. Today, our work as a local land trust is understood as a bridge to something even broader. While we work locally, what we do contributes to a global solution. Recent events have put our conservation work more deeply into focus as it positively impacts not just this corner of Illinois but is a critical link in national strategy. Across the nation, people now recognize a deeper appreciation for nature and the work of past generations to conserve the natural places we enjoy. Nature is a common comfort for people concerned with so many issues. This new awareness has also clarified the critical role that local land trusts play in the larger arena as we address the loss of biodiversity that threatens our natural systems, seek solutions for a changing climate, and focus on the need for equitable access to nature. These global issues are inextricably linked with the actions we take locally. Collectively, these issues pose a serious risk to the abundance and resilience of the natural resources that anchor all Americans’ quality of life. These challenges can seem daunting but there’s a plan that puts land trusts like ours at the very center of the solution. The government’s proposed “30 x 30” plan is a locally-led, nationally-scaled effort to conserve 30% of our nation’s lands by 2030 and deliver an expanded connection to nature for all. This makes our work not just a bridge to nature locally, but a bridge to global solutions and the future. Based in communities across the country, land trusts like Lake Forest Open Lands are uniquely qualified to respond to local needs, conserve lands that provide clean air and water, enact solutions to protect biodiversity, and provide equitable access for all. Local land trusts are a bridge to nature in so many ways by: • Helping to support biodiversity • Ensuring that all people have access to nature • Conserving our community’s character and sense of place • Enhancing our quality of life and supporting a strong local economy • Connecting generations to wonder and discovery, and • Bridging the deep history of the land with the future. Lake Forest Open Lands has built a bridge to nature over many decades. We are excited to build more bridges that reach within our community and beyond. SUMMER 2021 GRASS ROOTS

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGAGEMENT Environmental engagement at Lake Forest Open Lands provides multiple ways for all generations to develop lasting connections to nature and our land. We know that people enter the natural world in different ways and so we provide all people in the many communities we reach with opportunities for learning about nature first-hand and through lectures and film series. Using our various preserves as outdoor classrooms in all seasons, we engage adults in small events with expert naturalists, families in guided nature hikes, students in nature-based school programs and camps, and invite all to participate in educational restoration workdays. While many of these are led by experienced staff members and volunteers, some are also self-guided, allowing people to take in the environment in their own time and terms. Whatever the means of learning, our goal is to create a conservation community in which people more fully appreciate not only our preserves but their own backyards and other connected green spaces.

A Bridge to Our Future CENTER FOR CONSERVATION LEADERSHIP A good part of creating bridges to open spaces is accomplished through the Center for Conservation Leadership (CCL) as it engages and empowers high school students from diverse communities as the next generation of conservation leaders. This combination of environmental learning, leadership training and community service in a compelling placebased program that enhances and enriches the students’ understanding and appreciation for the natural world. A diverse and inclusive environmental community spanning all ages, genders, economic status, race, and ethnicities is fundamental to the future of conservation as environmental deterioration, depletion of natural resources and destruction of ecosystems are a concern in every community. CCL is committed to diversifying the field and developing environmental leaders in all communities. These programs are as vital to the health of our communities as they are to the health of the land. As they say, it takes a village and many people contribute to the success of CCL and its students. Author Rachel Carson wrote, “If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him/her, the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.” This role is filled by the dedicated CCL mentors who volunteer their time to support the students on their journey through stewardship projects and encourage their sense of belonging to the natural world. The mentors enthusiastically dedicate many hours and much energy to work with the students throughout this year, guiding them in the stewardship projects, dispensing sage advice and helping students gain confidence. These extraordinary people from different places and with different backgrounds share an interest in conservation but more so in young people and their growth.

A Bridge to Our Past NATIVE COMMUNITIES Our history of connecting people to the land goes back over 50 years. But the story of the land we know as the LFOLA preserves begins well before that with the native people who lived here in northern Illinois and cared for this land long ago. In recognition of this history, we are partnering with Native communities in the Chicago area to incorporate this legacy into our mission and programs. Our first step will be to develop a Land Acknowledgement Statement that honors the connection between the native peoples and our own stewardship. This is a simple, powerful way of showing respect to those who came before us and nurtured this land as we do today. It begins to connect the stories and practices of indigenous peoples’ history and culture with our work. To begin this journey, local tribal elders from the Potowatomi and Ojibwe nations will bless our land this summer. We will dedicate our new teepee, generously given to us by LF District 67, which will sit proudly facing East at our Mellody Farm Nature Preserve. The Land Blessing will be a foundation for our multigenerational Native American educational programming going forward. Starting with a week-long camp (July 26 – 30) for all ages to introduce our young people to Native American traditions and the work we do today, this programming will weave our many initiatives together. Through this we will better understand and strengthen our relationship with the land, our history and the indigenous peoples of our region.

OUR COMMUNITY IN NATURE Lake Forest Open Lands provides access to remarkable open spaces and wild places for all to enjoy. During the past year we experienced so many places within Lake County closing their doors and restricting access, Lake Forest Open Lands kept our hundreds of acres of public nature preserves open for everyone to enjoy and explore safely. We know that a connection to nature positively affects human health and our quality of life. The value of preserving nature at a local level not just for its intrinsic natural value but for the many other benefits it provides, has been increasingly recognized over the last decade. Community conservation not only contributes to preserving biodiversity but improves our lives in so many other ways by mitigating flood damage, cleaning our air and water, improving the economy and helping to address impacts from a changing climate. A community connected to nature is more vital today then ever before. Embracing our natural roots and deeper connection with the land will stand the test of time and will always help define the special nature of where we live.

Building a Bridge to Conservation A TRIBUTE TO SALLY SEARLE Lake Forest Open Lands lost a dear friend and Open Prairie Society member in May of this year. Sally Searle was a beloved Lake Forest Open Lands member, a friend to all and a lifelong conservationist. Her wonderful sense of humor, grit and down-to-earth nature was shared with everyone she met. Sally’s favorite LFOLA event was Bagpipes & Bonfire. Each fall, she made a point to return to Lake Forest from her ranch in Nevada so as not to miss this special event. Sally and her family chaired Bagpipes & Bonfire in 2016. Sally’s passion for conservation and the outdoors is a legacy that has guided her family’s love of nature. Her daughter, Scotty, a LFOLA Governor recalls, “Mom taught us to respect the outdoors and everything that lives there. To leave it as you found it.” Sally’s inclusive enthusiasm for our natural spaces was demonstrated decades ago when she allowed Lake Forest Open Lands Association trail access through her backyard so the entire community could connect the Skokie River Nature Preserve with Derwen Mawr Nature Preserve to the south. We are grateful for Sally’s meaningful friendship and for her commitment to provide endowment support to Lake Forest Open Lands. She will be forever remembered.

A Bridge Built Upon Leadership GEORGE COVINGTON First given in 2000, Lake Forest Open Lands Association has presented its highest honor, the Savanna Conservators Award, to an individual who represents outstanding dedication, commitment, uniqueness and leadership for the broader conservation community. On May 19, 2021, LFOLA Director George Covington was presented with the Savanna Conservators Award at Lake Forest Open Lands Association’s annual meeting which was held virtually. George has a decade’s long history of dedication and service to LFOLA and for conservation in general, and he is admired and respected by all who know him. His “can-do” spirit, nationally-recognized legal expertise and exceptional leadership has guided LFOLA through many of the organization’s key acquisition milestones. From the complex Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve acquisition to the preservation of Deerpath Farm to securing the permanent protection of the Jean and John Greene Nature Preserve at McCormick Ravine, George’s commitment to conservation with a community-minded approach will benefit countless residents and visitors to these special natural treasures for generations. George’s love for conservation is shared with his wife, Alexandra and his three daughters, Jean, Sarah and Karen. Thank you, George!

Bridge to our Neighbors and Neighborhoods 2021 BAGPIPES & BONFIRE Bagpipes & Bonfire is Lake Forest Open Lands’ traditional autumn celebration of our community and its beautiful open spaces. It is also our primary fundraiser and the proceeds support our important conservation mission and work. In 2020, in response to Covid restrictions, we were not able to host the traditional bonfire and picnic on the Middlefork Farm field. To reimagine this much anticipated community event, we introduced some memorable changes to keep our tradition strong and make it available to the entire community while engaging our neighbors and neighborhoods responsibly. To keep the fire burning, pipers played “Amazing Grace” simultaneously at various locations at sunset creating a magical, mystical moment to bring our community together in a time when we needed this camaraderie. Community members walked out the door of their homes and gathered to participate in the majesty of the moment. The event connected our neighborhoods and citizens in new and welcome ways, creating a new tradition.
