Leader Comment January 2019 “New Year - a new chapter, a new verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately, we write it, the choice is ours.” That’s the challenge laid down by writer and thinker Alex Morritt as we embark on another new year’s journey. Welcome to January. Happy New Year 2019, let’s hope it’s going to be a good 12 months for everyone in our town, businesses, residents, families, one and all. New Year’s Resolutions, do people still

At Leyland Leader, we are going into our 14th year in business, serving our town and, hopefully, providing a useful service with our independent business directory. RunSmart Leyland

Always just a bunch of mates of all abilities going for a run with great support

After struggling to find a club or a group run meeting at times that suited working parents two friends gained Leader in Running Fitness qualifications to set up RunSmart Leyland in 2014. The aim was to provide our Leyland community with a safe place to meet and run (that’s free) in a social environment at 8pm – after the kids have gone to bed! The group met on the quiet side of the main Leyland Tesco’s Car Park near Leyland Cross. This is still the meeting point today! From being just a group of six mates going for a run, it soon grew in size through word of mouth and sharing posts on social media plus a few hastily put together posters on notice boards around the town. Within a few months there were 30/40 people joining us on planned 5km routes every Monday and funding was achieved to get a few more people qualified so that a beginners course could be run in January 2015. This beginners course lasted 10 weeks and ended with 50 people taking the step from being sat at home to running 5km regularly. As a result of this course further funding was sought and more leaders achieved the

qualification required to assist in running the group and the planned 5km routes became planned 5km and 8km routes plus the group now additionally met on a Wednesday at 8pm – after bed time! RunSmart Leyland has been recognised by England Athletics being runner up in the North West Group / Leader of the Year and also by the local community being nominated for a Community Impact Award at the South Ribble Community Awards Since RunSmart Leyland started 600+ people have taken part in the RunSmart Leyland Beginners Course and an average of between 70 and 100 of the 300+ people that have attended in the last 6 months meet up to go for a safe planned 5km or 8km run with mates every Monday and Wednesday. Everyone Welcome!

Is there an autism epidemic? With Lynn McCann of ReachOut ASC

What do Ann Hegarty of The Chase, Chris Packham from Springwatch, Susan Boyle and Robert White from Britain’s Got Talent got in common? They are all autistic. Celebrities are coming out as autistic all over the place. Many more children and adults have been

diagnosed as autistic especially in the last 10 years and we are hearing the ‘autism’ word on TV more and more. But we don’t really have an epidemic. Autism has always been part of humankind, but we have simply got better at recognising and diagnosing it. And in the last few years we’ve discovered that it isn’t just a male condition, there have been many more autistic females than we realised because we have learned how autism can present differently in females. Autism is characterised by being a different way the brain thinks, perceives and processes experiences and information from the senses. It is a spectrum, where every person on that spectrum is different but share some of the characteristics that are in the diagnostic criteria. One of my autistic friends explains it well: “Autism is a different way of thinking and processing, especially sensory experiences. As common as being lefthanded and just as misunderstood is that used to be.” Autistic people have a lot of gifts to offer our world and certainly have done for

centuries. Many autistic people’s inventions, insights and perspectives have helped mankind become what it is today. However, autistic people do have some difficulties, and some can have other conditions or a learning disability as well as autism. That’s why it is identified as a disability. The diagnostic criteria looks at differences and difficulties in communication, social interaction, ways of thinking and processing (including intense interests) and sensory processing. Reachout ASC is a Leyland based company of autism specialists, working across the whole North West. Lynn and Emma are autism specialist teachers, Ruth is a sensory therapist and Cristina is autistic. Together we bring a wealth of experience and knowledge that we use to equip, advise and resource anyone who wants to understand and support autistic children, young people and adults. We work with schools across Lancashire, local

businesses, churches and charities. We do this job because we’re passionate about making school and life successful for autistic children and young people. We believe that autistic people have a right to live in society that understands them. To live in a society that makes adaptations to enable them to access education, health services, jobs and their community.

25 ‘...strategies that can be life-changing…’

If you have an autistic child in your family, you work in education or health services, or if you are autistic, then look at our training courses where we can all come and learn together. We give you lots of practical ideas and learn about specific strategies that can be life changing. Our courses are based at Leyland Methodist church hall, just off junction 28 of the M6. They run from 9:30am until 3.00pm and lunch is provided. The room has a quiet area for autistic people who may need a space to go to,

and there are discounts for parents and autistic people to attend. Lynn and her team have been delivering training all over the country for over 10 years. Lynn has spoken at national conferences and is the author of a number of books about supporting autistic children in schools and a book of social stories. Our guest speakers are amazing people to listen to and learn from. Care in Your OWN Home How much notice do you need to start care? ANSWER. In some cases a relative has telephoned us in the morning and we have started to provide care for a loved one in the afternoon! The answer is we try to start as early as you need care. Starting care within 24 hours is usually required if you have an emergency or if you are discharged from hospital earlier than you expected. PLANNING CARE. Our rotas are complex and it is not easy and trying to fit new care packages at short notice. At times such as the summer holidays or Christmas this is made even more difficult because some of our care staff may be on holiday. Home care is something that you really should planned, ideally we recommend you contact us 2-3 weeks before care is actually needed, this gives us time to meet you, complete paperwork and fit the calls into our rota to ensure that we can provide support at the time you want it. LEGAL REQUIREMENTS. Prior to starting care we have to come and meet you and see the location where we will be providing care. We do what we call an “ASSESSMENT” this means we take details about the times of calls, the duration of calls, the tasks to be carried out and issues such as a your medication, doctor and next of kin. Our regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC) expects us to develop a ”CARE PLAN” from the assessment. This means that everything we are do is documented and who we contact in an emergency is available. Be wary of companies who are willing to start care without having completed an assessment, care plan or having met you in advance – just turning up and starting care is not good practice!

Getting to Know You Getting to Know You With Steven Haycocks Born: Merseyside; Occupation: Headteacher, Balshaw’s Church of England High School Marital Status: Married; Family: Two children.

Hero: an anti-hero, Yossarian, main protagonist in the novel Catch 22 Place to live: Where I live now, but with warmer, drier weather Greatest fear: not being good enough - for God, family, friends and people I serve at work. Family holiday: any of them - holiday times with my family is my greatest pleasure What would I change about yourself: I would have made my younger self work harder between 13-16! Nothing worse than the regret you could have done better. What makes me angry: Injustice, poverty What motivates me to work hard: Hope that children whose lives I impact will become adults making a positive contribution to society by fighting injustice and poverty. Favourite thing about my career: making a positive difference in young peoples’ lives. What makes me laugh: The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. What I wanted to be when I was small: Does anyone know? This is one of the greatest pressures that we put young people under, the expectation that they should know what they want to be. Many of the most in demand jobs didn’t exit 10 years ago. It’s better they pursue what interests them –what to do with those interests will come later.

47

Favourite sport to watch or play: Crown Green Bowling or Squash Karaoke song: it would have to be at gunpoint with the imminent threat of death! It’s not that I can’t sing, it’s the Karaoke concept I can’t bear. The idea of being in a confined space listening to random people murdering songs is a personal hell! Hobbies: long country walks, listening to music, reading a good book in the sunshine by a pool, gardening. Superpower of choice: the power to end cruelty and unkindness Lottery win: It’s never going to happen as I will never enter it! Favourite zoo animal: I feel ambivalent

On holiday: Steven Haycocks with wife Emma and children Theo and Lara

towards zoos, but watching primates is utterly fascinating. Childhood memory: Playing on the beach at Aberdaron, North Wales on family holiday. Glass half full or half empty: I am an eternal optimist - always half full. Desert island items: a computer with internet connection (I need to keep up with the news, listen to music, and continue to learn more about the world); the Bible, for inspiration and re-assurance Favourite school subject: English—without any doubt! There were no wrong answers and I could already speak it! First job: Gardening and grounds maintenance, I couldn't believe I was paid to do something I loved doing anyway. Looking forward to in the future: Having grandchildren and time to play with them.

OCULAR COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY

What is an OCT Scan? OCT deep tissue scanners are one of the latest diagnostic tools available in just some optical practices. These scans achieve high resolution pictures of the structural layers at the back of the eye to help the optometrist determine underlying conditions that you may be unaware of. This service is offered to all of our patients attending the practice during their eye examination. It means the optometrist can look for and diagnose early signs of eye related conditions, for example Age Related

Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, macular holes and many more conditions that can become a sight threatening issue to you. Having regular in-depth OCT scans can help us monitor certain eye related problems too. We do a minimum of 6 scans to make a thorough diagnosis.

To book an OCT scan and eye test at Wrights Opticians, or just to talk to us regarding this service, please call today on 01772 424296. We are always happy to answer any questions!

Case Study Another success story!

Our patient came in recently for his routine eye

examination.

On examination, he was offered the scans but was a little reluctant. However, he had the OCT scans, and we are so glad he did! After the optometrist had assessed the scans, our patient was sent immediately to Lytham Eye Clinic to have a procedure to save his sight!

St Andrews says ‘Farewell’ IT was an emotional morning at Leyland Parish church when the vicar Reverend Canon David Gibb and wife Claire stepped down after 17 years.

St Andrews was packed as all four congregations came together in a joint farewell service marking the end of a significant era in the life of the centuries old church. David and Claire Gibb, along with daughters Rebekah, Hannah and Esther arrived in Leyland in July 2001 from Oxford. He explained: “I was only 32 years old then, it was my first parish and all seemed quite daunting and challenging – especially as I am a ‘Southern softie’ and didn’t speak the way the locals spoke. From day one, though, we knew it was right for us, everyone made us welcome. There is a wonderful team here, we get tremendous support, I am so grateful for everyone who has helped us along the way.” Associate vicars Matt Cook and Duncan Bell led the joint service, reflecting upon and paying tribute to the Gibbs and their 17 year long ministry. Gifts were presented during the Thanksgiving Service and St Andrews Children’s Worker Katy Turner paid particular tribute to Claire Gibb’s unstinting efforts in teaching, organising and serving the

children and young people of the parish. In his last sermon as vicar of Leyland, Mr Gibb fittingly turned to the Revelation, the last book of the Bible. As ever, he directed his listeners to the cross of Jesus, adding: “It’s been a real privilege to serve here, we have had some wonderful times, there has been sadness too, but much joy too. “The church has grown and we have seen many changes. We will take away with us countless wonderful memories of our times here, I will particularly remember the successful Mission Weeks we have held. I have seen many people turn to Christ in our time, Leyland and its people will forever be in our hearts.”

Reverend Gibb admitted that his health had suffered in recent times and though he was stepping aside with a heavy heart, he knew the time was right to move on. Church wardens Karen Swift and Paul Moran are now tasked as Church of England ‘sequestrators’ as they begin the process of appointing a new vicar. Keith Bradshaw

Getting to Know You

Getting to Know You With (Rev’d) Phil Gough Born: Chester; Occupation: Part of Ministry Team at Leyland and Midge Hall Methodist Churches, Chaplain to Leyland Methodist Schools Married Family: Two wonderful teenage children, as a fostering family we also borrow other people’s children at times. Hero: Obviously Jesus Christ, my rescuer, redeemer, ever-present friend; also many heroes in faith eg Martin Luther King, whose passion and commitment to peaceful protest in the civil rights struggle in the USA was firmly rooted in his faith - all are created equal, equally loved by God. Place to live: Leyland/South Ribble (the best) or Chester, where I was born, or Crosby where I grew up. Greatest fear: Wasting God-given opportunities, or not making the most of what I’ve been given. Family holiday: The Algarve, Portugal. What would you change about yourself: I’m content with whom I am, I’d like to be 20 years younger. What makes me angry: Injustice, misuse of power, unwillingness to tackle the root causes of poverty. What motivates you to work hard: The sense of call, vocation, serve and minister communicate how much people are loved. Favourite thing about your career: Working and ministering alongside wonderful people, and the joy of seeing God at work in people’s lives. Proudest accomplishment: My family, our home, our extended family. What makes me laugh: Comedy icons Victoria Wood, Les Dawson, Ken Dodd, Morecambe & Wise, French & Saunders, Rowan Atkinson What did you want to be when you were small: A train driver. Favourite sport to watch or play: Football,

I’m a life-long Liverpool supporter. Karaoke song: You’ll Never Walk Alone, Hallelujah, anything really, I love a good sing! Nickname: I get called all sorts of names, none have ever really stuck. Hobbies: Writing and singing, presenting on Radio Leyland, reading, walking, theatre, cinema, and currently Shuffleboard at The Flower Bowl, Barton Grange. Superpower of choice: Invisibility (remember The Invisible Man, 1980s TV?) - just to find out what really goes on indifferent places. Lottery win: Use as much as possible to free people from poverty, addiction and provide much needed mental health support. Favourite zoo animal: Elephants, I’ve always been fascinated by these creatures. Dinner invitations: Martin Luther King Jr, Simon Peter (Jesus’ disciple), Agatha Christie, Kenny Dalglish (right) - an odd mix!! Childhood memory: Holding my sister and brother (twins) when they were tiny, I’m six years older than them. Glass half full or empty: Often overflowing, but always at least half full. Desert Island items: My Bible, my guitar and a photograph of my family. Favourite school subject: French and Latin First job: seasonal hotel work, waiting on then involved with entertainments. What would you never do again: Go on an all day sea voyage whale and dolphin spotting without taking heavy duty seasick medication. A never to be repeated day! Looking forward to in the future: Liverpool FC winning their first Premier League trophy and the eternity with Jesus, with so many I long to see again, which He has promised and made possible.

Transferring ISAs

Money Matters with Greg Heath of Derbyshire Booth Financial Management Ltd

Time to bring your investments together?

If you have accumulated a number of Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) over the years, keeping them all in one place could give you better control and help you save money. There’s a common misconception that you can’t move your existing ISAs from one provider to another. Transferring your ISAs doesn’t affect its tax-efficient status, but you should make sure that you don’t have to pay penalties or give up valuable benefits. If you want to switch from an existing ISA provider to a new one, you’re perfectly within your rights to do so. Much like a mortgage, you shouldn’t feel as though you’re saddled forever with your first ISA provider choice. Transferring your ISAs could allow you to widen your range of investment choices, as the range on offer can differ between providers.

will count towards your £4,000 Lifetime ISA allowance for the year and qualify for the government bonus, but will not count towards your overall ISA allowance of £20,000 in 2018/19. It is not advisable to transfer from a Lifetime ISA. Transferring your ISAs won’t affect their tax-efficient status, provided you follow the correct process. You might think that to make a transfer from one ISA to another, you’ll need to close down your existing account, make a withdrawal, then open up a new account and pay in. But closing down your current ISA means you’ll immediately lose all the tax benefits, so never withdraw your savings to pay into a new ISA. ADDITIONAL PERMITTED ISA ALLOWANCE Instead, if you want to make a transfer, we’ll contact your provider to inform them and manage the entire transfer process for you. Remember that tax rules can change in future, and their effect on you will depend on your individual circumstances. If you are looking to transfer ISA tax benefits following the death of your spouse or registered civil partner, the survivor can now inherit their ISA tax benefits. This will be in the form of an additional permitted allowance equal to the value of the ISA at the holder’s death and will be in addition to your own ISA allowance.

EASIER TO MONITOR AND MANAGE Another reason to switch is that you could find you’re better off because another provider is offering lower fees and charges. You may also want to move because you prefer to keep all your investments conveniently in one place, where they’re easier to monitor and manage. You can transfer your ISA from one provider to another at any time. You can also transfer from one type of ISA to a different type of ISA – for example, you can move money held in a Stocks & Shares ISA into a Cash ISA, or from a Cash ISA to a Stocks & Shares ISA. Similarly, money held in an Innovative Finance ISA can be transferred into a Stocks & Shares Do you have any questions ISA or into a Cash ISA. about your finances? Lancashire FA honour Brian ‘Pilky’ Pilkington IT WAS a day to remember at Lancashire FA on Thurston Road, as members of the football community came together to recognise and celebrate the achievements of former Burnley legend and England winger, Leyland’s own Brian Pilkington. Brian made over 440 appearances in Claret and Blue during the 1950’s and 60’s, scoring over 70 goals from the left flank, including two in the historical 3-1 win over German side Hamburg in the 1961 European Cup quarter-final. He gained his only international cap for England in a 2-0 victory over Northern Ireland in 1954, with many saying had it not been for the late, great Sir Tom Finney who kept him out of the national side, Brian would have undoubtedly won more international caps. The 85-year-old’s illustrious career was celebrated at Lancashire FA headquarters on Thurston Road, with a newly built stand named in his honour. In front of over 50 guests, including members from the Pilkington family and representatives from all of the clubs Brian played for, a look back at the ex-Burnley man’s career was delivered by the fantastic Speaker and Comedian, Norman Prince. The procession then made their way out onto the County Ground pitch, where Brian played the latter days of his

career for the now defunct Leyland Motors, to officially unveil the ‘Brian Pilkington Stand.’ Reflecting on an important afternoon for football across the region, Lancashire FA’s Head of Commercial & Operations, David Chell said: “It was a pleasure to look back on and celebrate the career of Brian Pilkington, unveiling a newly built stand in his name in the process.” “We had the privilege of welcoming Brian, his family and friends, representatives of football clubs which Brian once played for and the sponsors of the stand, Goldseal Windows, all looking back on Brian’s magnificent footballing career.” “It was a special day for football throughout Lancashire, and as the County FA, we were especially proud to host the event and name the stand in Brian’s honour.” By Harry Lyons, Lancashire FA

Record entries in South Ribble Open Art Competition A Leyland artist has been awarded first prize in the South Ribble Open Art Exhibition held at South Ribble Museum and Exhibition Centre.

Patricia Ashcroft won with an oil painting called ‘Cherries’. Patricia’s son Michael Ashcroft is a previous winner of this competition and currently has his international one man art exhibition opening in Manchester. The annual exhibition attracted a record-breaking number of entries this year with 55 artists submitting almost 100 pieces of art. The competition was judged by Stephen Sartin, former keeper of art at the Harris Museum, Preston, who praised the high standard of work on display. Second prize went to ‘Mistle Thrush’ - a pencil drawing by Mary Hull, and third prize was won by Arnold J. Davies with his watercolour painting called ‘Memories of Times Gone By’. Dr David Hunt, curator of South

Ribble Museum and Exhibition Centre, Leyland, said: “The fact that this exhibition is celebrating its 33rd year shows just how popular it is with the public. It’s a great opportunity for local artists to showcase their work in an historic venue and appreciated just as much by visitors as it is by those taking part.” Prizes were presented to the winners by South Ribble’s Mayor, Councillor John Rainsbury.

Winner Patricia Ashcroft with Councillor John Rainsbury, Mayor of South Ribble

The judge also commended five artists: Sarah Thompson – ‘Blue Still Life’, Anthony Seal – ‘Grey clouds over Bleaklow Moor’, Dave Jaundrell – ‘October Trees’, Kath Grimshaw – ‘The Roaring Twenties’ and Irene Mynott – ‘Back Street St Tropez’ More information: www.southribblemuseum.org.uk

A team representing Leyland’s independent business magazine won the 2018 Team Brain Quiz, staged annually by Leyland 41 Club at Wellington Park. First prize was £350 to the team's nominated charity. Rebecca called into Leyland to collect the cheque from team members Keith Bradshaw and Bob Fleet. She said: "We are delighted with this donation and very grateful for the ongoing support from Leyland Leader and friends. The money will be put to good use, helping cancer care and developing research in our region."

The Leader quartet, which also included Mansel Pope and Ruth Bradshaw, emerged winners of the charity quiz ahead of 20 other teams from around the town. Leyland Leader also won the coveted Reg Smith Trophy in 2016, but were unable to defend their crown last year due to other commitments.
