Leader Comment September 2019
WELCOME to our September magazine, I wonder what this ninth month of the year means to you. Back to school or college perhaps, farewell to the Summer months, the leaves changing colour, longer nights drawing in, the countdown to Christmas, even (is it too soon for the C word?). Whatever your thoughts, I hope all works out well for you and our town. As I write we are clinging on to Summer. Leyland is actually gearing up for the fifth annual August Bank Holiday Taste of Leyland, a fantastic free event celebrating the best in food and drink. If previous years are anything to go by, Taste of Leyland will have been a great success and a great credit to everyone involved.
Speaking of great events, the date of next year’s Leyland Festival has already been set and, even now, the hard-working committee are planning an even greater spectacle for 2020. Check out page 82 for full details of the much anticipated announcement of Leyland Festival 2020.
Popular local musician Ian Bailey joins us this month in our regular Getting to Know You feature. Singersongwriter Ian can be found on page 57 - he’s a star performer! Speaking of music, have you discovered Radio Leyland yet? Your local, volunteer-led community radio station has been broadcasting on 104.8FM since April. There are breakfast shows most mornings, and music and local chat throughout the day. Plus there are specialist music shows - with local presenters - in the evenings. The station is always on the lookout for more help, in every role from presenters to researchers, producers, planners, IT and technical. It’s a great team effort, and it’s fun. We hope you enjoy making use of our September magazine. After 14 fulfilling years, we have reached issue 173. Make use of the many great local businesses, trades and services in our pages and tell them we sent you! Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

National Award for Phil Weaver Automotive
Congratulations to Phil and Jacqui Weaver, husband and wife business partners at Phil Weaver Automotive - they have been declared the ‘Best Used Car Dealership’ in the 2019 UK Transport Awards. The fantastic news for this local business, was announced recently in SME News, revealing and recognising the enterprises engaged in the vast array of endeavours across the transport sectors and markets. ‘Best Used Car Dealership 2019’ is a tremendous achievement for this fledgling business, based in Mere Brow. Although Phil has many years’ experience of the motor trade, Phil Weaver Automotive, has been trading for less than two years. A delighted Phil Weaver exclaimed: “We were nominated through industry nominations, then the SME News carry out their dedicated research, then it goes to the judging panel who make their final decisions. They then contacted us to inform us of the outcome for the 2019 Transport Awards.

Leyland Parish Church welcomes new vicar
LEYLAND Parish Church, St Andrew’s, has a new vicar. With a formal Institution service, a packed congregation warmly welcomed Reverend David Whitehouse as the new incumbent. The traditional Anglican Institution
ceremony was conducted by Bishop of Blackburn, Right Reverend Julian Henderson and the formal Induction by Assistant Archdeacon Canon Grant Ashton. In the service the new minister declared his faith in Christ as uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and made promises of allegiance to the Queen and obedience to the Bishop. As required, he toured the church building, making promises to uphold the ministry of word and sacrament and to fulfil the diocesan vision to make disciples, be witnesses and to grow leaders. As the Bishop underlined; “It is a time of welcome, thanksgiving and celebration for everyone as a new ministry begins and a new chapter in the life of the parish, which has welcomed worshippers for more than 800 years, opens up.” Following the formal installation, Reverend Whitehouse was welcomed to Leyland by fellow church leaders from various denominations within the town,
along with the Mayor and Mayoress of South Ribble, Councillor Harry Hancock and his wife Marion. On his appointment, David Whitehouse said: ‘It is a great joy to have been asked to come and serve our Lord Jesus alongside the church family at St Andrew’s. I am so grateful for all the hard work that went into the appointment process.
L to R: Right Reverend Julian Whitehouse, Bishop of Blackburn, Duncan Bell, Associate Vicar St Andrew’s, David Whitehouse, Vicar St Andrew’s, Matt Cook, Associate Vicar, St Andrew’s
“My family and I look forward to getting to know everyone and sharing life and ministry in Leyland. We are praying that in the years ahead God will show his kindness to us all by using what we do together to help more and more people get to know Jesus and his love for them.” Reverend Whitehouse, 49 years old, will officially take up his post from September 2019. Originally from Manchester, he is moving from Southport where he has been the vicar of St Simon’s (St Simon and St Jude with All Souls). He is married to Gaynor and they have three children, Naomi, Lydia and Reuben. The new vicar at St Andrew’s replaces Canon Reverend David Gibb, who stepped down from his post in December 2018 after 17 years’ successful leadership and ministry in Leyland.

In the Garden
A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market There’s no denying the nights are certainly drawing in, after the balmy, hot, humid beginning to August, followed by a wet spell, the temperatures do seem to have dropped and the garden does look a bit sad in places. Keep dead heading Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Marguerites, Coreopsis, Gaillardias and any other flowering perennials and annuals like cosmos, to prolong the flowering period. The same applies to basket plants to keep them going. Take all the leaves off tomato plants, to allow them to ripen and keep them in a light sunny spot if possible. The general rule of thumb with Summer flowering shrubs, is prune and trim them back after flowering, however leave hydrangeas with the heads on over Autumn and Winter. If in doubt about pruning always check first. At this time of year it’s time to start thinking about planting Spring flowering bulbs. Popular ones are daffodils, we’ve found the dwarf varieties like Tete a Tete are becoming more popular as they have multi heads and don’t tend to blow over or break in the wind. Tulips are very colourful and there are also dwarf/rockery varieties available in these to. Crocus are an all-time favourite, the large flowering varieties give the best show, species crocus tend to be quite small.
Snowdrops are tiny bulbs and don’t always flower the first year, so it’s better if you can buy these in the green in early Spring already in leaf. Whatever you decide to buy bulb wise, look for a decent size and a firm bulb, if they are small or soft they will rot off or you may get leaves and no flowers. I recently met Mary, a volunteer for Leyland
Hedgehog Rescue, it was fascinating listening to the work they do with sick, injured & abandoned hedgehogs. If you’re tidying up in the garden leave a few piles of leaves around. Putting a saucer of clean water and kitten biscuits in an overturned plastic box, with a hedgehog sized hole cut out, encourages them into the garden, and the food and water contains all the nutrients they need. They also have a diet of slugs, caterpillars, leatherbacks and many more garden beasties, encourage them in for environmental pest control! If you do see a hedgehog out during the day, it’s probably unwell and needs checking out so please contact https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/ Wildlife-Sanctuary/Leyland-Hedgehog-Rescue -353163985558221/ They are always looking for volunteers. Make the most of your Summer garden, as we head towards Autumn.
