Leader Comment September 2017 SUDDENLY it’s September, ‘Back to School,’ ‘Nights are Drawing In,’ ‘Countdown to Christmas’ and all that. Where did the Summer go and how was it for you? Are the batteries re-charged, are you suitably refreshed and facing up to Autumn with a smile? On reflection, two community events bring great credit to our town and are a continual source of civic pride. Leyland Festival, rightly restored to its former pomp and glory, was a great success in June - the sun shone and thousands turned out to celebrate. Well done to everyone involved, we’re looking forward to Leyland Festival 2018 already! Secondly, as I write the town is gearing up for our third August Bank Holiday Taste of Leyland celebrations. This year’s event - I’m assuming it’s been a great success celebrated culinary offerings from around the world, everything from Japanese and Cantonese cuisine through to dishes from India and Mexico as well as a mobile pizza kitchen, making its first appearance at a major food event. Congratulations to Martin Stringfellow and brother Dave who have set up The Flying Pig Pizza Company, serving up delicious pizzas from their mobile wood-fired oven housed in their customised van - a first for Leyland! And well done to Leyland’s master brewer Haydn Williams who has celebrated the first birthday of his Crankshaft Brewery with a brand new ale. Truck Trail Ale is now on sale at selected outlets,
well done all round Haydn, cheers! The Truck Trail, of course, has been the success story of Leyland’s summer months. It’s been great to see young children and families excitingly ‘trailing’ the town’s trucks and learning about our amazing industrial heritage.
Very much involved in Taste of Leyland will be the Beijing Restaurant on Chapel Brow at the heart of the town. Check out our review in this month’s magazine (pages 24-25). A top local business! Now, who mentioned Christmas? I did - at the top of the page - and next up it’s the official Christmas Festival Lights Switch on, another eagerly anticipated occasion in Leyland’s social calendar. Put it in the diary, Saturday November 25, lots to look forward to including an Ice Rink and a Snow Globe. How good is that! Once again, as we approach issue 150 (that’s 12 and a half years of our own business), Leyland Leader brings 96 pages highlighting the best of Leyland’s businesses. It’s been an interesting and encouraging journey for us as we continually seek to promote the best that Leyland has to offer. It’s a privilege to lend our support to the great annual events such as Leyland Festival, Taste of Leyland and the Christmas Lights Switch-On. Restaurant Review
The Beijing Restaurant, Chapel Brow, Leyland
DID you know that coach parties of Chinese tourists regularly divert from the M6 to enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine at Leyland’s very own Beijing Restaurant? Me neither, but if that’s an encouraging sign of authentic Oriental cuisine on offer, it’s good enough for me. And on our latest visit, guess what - a party of genuine Chinese diners were happily
enjoying ‘the real deal’ at Leyland’s leading Thai and Cantonese Restaurant. In our experience, the Beijing never disappoints and once again it lived up to expectations. It can’t fail, ‘front of house’ Jacky, along with wife Kelly, are consistently helpful, caring, attentive and good fun. Plus, chef Manfai Lao (Kelly’s Dad) is more than the genuine article, having previously starred at the world renowned Yang Sing in Manchester’s Chinatown. His innovative and authentic creations never fail to please. As ever, we received the warmest of welcomes and coats were still being removed when the latest Oriental adventure kicked off with a bowl of crispy prawn crackers (huge) and sweet chilli dipping sauce. To business, the Beijing menu is wonderfully extensive, there must be something for everyone here, and all so tempting. Sun Lik beer and crisp dry Pinot Grigio (not Chinese but still good) wine as ever helped. For starters, we opted for a traditional favourite, Hot and Sour Soup - it never fails to stir the spirits, wonderful! The bowls were brimming, their contents piping hot, sticky and laced with meats, seafood and Chinese vegetables, including the inevitable chilli - hot stuff, generous and hearty. And the prawn crackers proved a handy accompaniment - ‘going for a dip takes on a whole new meaning.’ Suitably nudged by Jacky, we opted for a sharing
starter, chef’s choice and what a taste-buds teaser it turned out to be. A perfectly presented platter confronted us with yet more choices, where to start being the most crucial. Trust me, we thoroughly enjoyed crispy Thai Fishcakes, succulent chicken skewers with Cantonese sauce, the most delicate King Prawns and Asparagus in light tempura batter - the ultimate in ‘moreish’ cuisine, along with melt in the mouth shredded fillet steak rolls in pepper sauce. The steak element in this format was new to us and it provided a brand new sensation. As ever, the selection nestled on a bed of deep green crispy seaweed - we know it’s really fried cabbage, but still it contributed to a light, wondrous tasty combination. Laughter clearly transcends any language barriers and the Chinese party were clearly having a great time. They, via Jacky, assured us the seafood
starters were a definite ‘must try’ creation. Say no more, we were treated to an unanticipated yet amazing creation—juicy scallops on a bed of rice noodles sitting in their shells whilst bathing in a delicious fresh coriander sauce. Chef Manfai has little English but his amazing creations more than speak for themselves. Delicate and delicious! Next up, everyone’s favourite, the Crispy Aromatic Duck, complete with delicate pancakes (three each), Hoi Sin sauce and matchstick vegetables. The bird was expertly de-constructed at the table by our genial host, leaving us to individually re-assemble our own packaged delights. An absolute quacker! Following the duck demolition process, you’re beginning to feel less than under-nourished and it’s appropriate to negotiate a pause - 10 minutes on this occasion - before brandishing chopsticks and proceeding to the ‘main’ event.

‘...a worthy award-winner’ As with our starters, we left the choice of mains to the chef and Jacky with the stipulation one meat and one seafood would fit the bill. They say you ‘eat with your eyes’ and presentation is key, it certainly is at the Beijing. A wonderful bird’s nest creation moulded from crispy noodles held delicate slivers of beef in a sumptuous salt and pepper sauce, the colour provided by deep green crunchy sugar snap peas. Our ‘second’ mains proved equally delightful. Generous Stir Fried King Prawns with cashew nuts nestled in a stir fry sauce - a perfect combination, contributing superbly to an amazing Oriental ‘surf n turf’ delight. The supporting act for this delightful duo was a bowl of delicate Chinese egg fried rice, completing a meal to remember. Full credit to the chef and those that served us. Confession time - suitably stuffed we failed to finish the fried rice and took the remnants home in a takeaway carton. A meal in itself it was studded with char sui pork, shrimp and more. It provided an excellent lunch alternative the next day. Thank you Jacky and team. There are fascinating desserts on offer at the Beijing, but we drew the line here. Based on experiences thus far, we are confident the range of sweets will deliver. In recent times, Morrisons food critics awarded the Beijing ‘Best Local Chinese Restaurant’ in their Great Grub Awards. Their testers claimed; “It’s a true example of a community town centre restaurant.” And so it is, it’s a well-deserved

accolade. It’s certainly a worthy award-winner with us. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Beijing, but there is much more on offer. If Chinese or Thai banquets are for you, there are the widest selection catering for small or large groups wishing to share the Oriental experience. Choices abound, with extensive vegetarian selections and an impressive wine list to consider. In addition, the Beijing boasts the most extensive takeaway Chinese and Thai menu, including free prawn crackers. Delivery options are also available, call for details. You’d have to go a long way - China, or Thailand perhaps - to beat the experience and value on offer at the Beijing. Indeed, parties of Chinese tourists travel in the opposite direction to sample the delights. Ever wondered where Chinese people go when they fancy going out for a ‘Chinese?’ The answer - Leyland! We thoroughly recommend it, we will be back!

Retirement Choices Money Matters with Greg Heath of Derbyshire Booth Financial Management How much time do you spend planning for retirement?
THE 2015 PENSION FREEDOMS gave us greater flexibility over our retirement options, but the reforms have also made retirement choices much more complex. This means we need to start thinking about retirement earlier. However, half (50%) of respondents aged 45-54 to a consumer survey[1] didn’t think about retirement at all last year. Given the lack of time people spend thinking about retirement, it’s perhaps unsurprising that six in ten (62%) 45 to 54-year-olds don’t know how much they have saved for retirement, and only around one in ten (12%) say they fully understand the 2015 pension reforms. If people spent more time planning for retirement, this could help them better identify whether they are saving enough. According to the survey, people expect to need £1,360[2] a month in order to live comfortably in retirement. In order to do this, someone retiring at 55 would need to have around £311,000 saved, or £158,000 if they retire at 65 – assuming they qualify for the full State Pension. However, the average pension savings of those surveyed aged 45 to 54 years old is £71,342, with four in ten (39%) having less than £50,000, and one in seven (13%) not having anything at all. To achieve the amount they want and retire at 55, the average 45-year-old would need to save around £24,000 in pension contributions each year for the next decade. WE ARE GOING ON HOLIDAY IN AUGUST FOR A FORTNIGHT. CAN YOU VISIT MY MUM WHEN WE ARE AWAY? ANSWER: Many people assume that we only support someone a person when they need care for a few months, or on an ongoing basis. This is not actually the case – we can help people on a short-term basis – this can be for just a few days or a couple of weeks. We often find that a son or daughter looks after an elderly parent. For some people this may mean supporting mum or dad daily for large blocks of time. For other people it may mean popping in for short visits throughout the week to make sure everything is ok and complete specific tasks such as the shopping or washing. However, when a family member takes a holiday for a week or two this routine will be broken. If support arrangements are not put in place for mum or dad the worry can actually ruin a well deserved holiday. In many cases a person may go into a care home for respite. A care home of course has the facilities in place to look after a person. However, there are drawbacks – at peak holiday times they get booked up, and of course many people prefer to stay in their own home environment. We can provide a range of services at a person’s own home. If necessary we can provide 24 hour care, this will be care throughout the day and a night carer 10pm-7am. 24 hour care is expensive because we have to pay a carers wages for every hour but on the other hand if 24 hour care is for a few days/weeks it may be a realistic option. If someone is unsafe just on a night we can put in place overnights, these are usually 10pm to 7am but these times can be adjusted. An elderly person may be fine on their own but just need a call to ensure that they are keeping well. For a person who is reasonably well and mobile it may just be a case of us visiting 1 hour a day to make sure everything is fine. For other people it may be the case that you require 4 visits a day – morning, lunch, tea and bedtime. We can also take people “out and about” as our carers have a full car insurance and if necessary we have a lightweight wheelchair to help with mobility. We can take someone to practical appointments such as hospital outpatients at Chorley or Preston, or social appointments such as the Garden Centre or Supermarkets. If you are seriously considering respite care I would advise you to contact us as soon as possible to discuss your requirements. Our care rotas are very complex and if you leave it too late we may not be able to help.

SERVES 4; Preparation time 35 mins; Cooking time 15 mins Ingredients 4 tbsp olive oil 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped or crushed 2 tbsp anchovy paste or finely chopped anchovies 4 tbsp tomato puree ½ tsp chilli flakes 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped Few basil leaves, plus extra to serve 4 whole mackerel, gutted, heads removed Method 1 Pour 3 tbsp oil into a medium frying pan and heat gently, then add the garlic—if it sizzles, the oil is too hot. Cook for about 3 mins until the garlic is just beginning to brown. Stir in the anchovy paste for 2 mins, then the tomato puree for 2 mins more - you should have a lovely aromatic paste. 2 Add 250ml of water and the chilli flakes

When the flames have died and coals are glowing, season the fish, brush with remaining oil. Lay on the grills, or on a piece of foil to prevent sticking. Dames out running for Derian
THERE is nothing like a Dame—especially when it comes to fundraising for Derian House. Staff at Derian House have unveiled their plans to stage this year’s “Dames on the Run”. Now in its third year, this fantastic event is being staged in support of all the Derian Dads who do so much to support their family in the face of their child’s illness, and the impact it has on them both emotionally and financially. Once again, the charity wants to recruit men from a wide range of backgrounds who are prepared to go all out to support their local children’s hospice by throwing off their inhibitions, (along with their trousers), dressing up as a pantomime dame and taking part in the 5K Run. The children’s hospice is hoping as many men as possible, who are willing to don a dress in support of Derian House, will sign up for the event in Astley Park on Sunday, October 8th. With prizes for the winner of the 5K Run, Best Dressed Dame and a Photo Competition, there’s something for everyone! Susie Poppitt, Head of Fundraising at Derian House said, “This fun event has now become a firm favourite in the Derian House fundraising
calendar. It provides both runners and spectators alike with a 5K race with a difference, and a lot of entertainment along the way, and, of course, it raises vital funds for Derian House at the same time! We want as many men as possible to sign up and help us raise at least £5,000 sponsorship to help us make a real difference to the life threatened children and families we support throughout the North West.
