Margaret Hughlock at Centurion Gallery Margaret Hughlock was born in Lancashire and studied textile and fashion design at Bolton College of Art. She developed a successful career in the fashion, textile and interior design industry. Her career in the design industry led her to work for several large companies such as Marks & Spencer, Debenhams and BHS designing textiles for the European and Japanese markets. Margaret has also worked with Mary Quant helping her to launch her range in Japan. Margaret has established herself as a freelance artist and designer, working throughout the UK, Spain and the USA creating hand-painted furniture, murals, and innovative interiors. Throughout her career, she has earned several awards, including “The national Newspaper Fashion Award” and was winner of “The House Beautiful Designer of the Year” award for fashion and interior design. Margaret works in various mediums and enjoys experimenting with technique and style. She describes herself as a sort of chameleon, creating works to suit a particular theme, background or interior style, although aspects of her career can be seen in these unusual and decorative pieces which incorporate architecture, history and culture. Margaret Hughlock and Centurion Gallery go back a very long way. In the 1970s, gallery owner Tony Dibsdall needed to commission an artist to do some original art work for framing. This was to establish Centurion Gallery as a business supplying shops during the Preston Guild 1972During a dental appointment at Margaret’s brother’s Leyland surgery the subject arose. Margaret was introduced to the Gallery and a long lasting working relationship developed. Centurion Gallery invite you to view an exhibition of Margaret’s recent new work in our upstairs gallery.

Museum Festival Success

A first of a kind Beer and Gin Festival, held among the exhibits of Leyland’s British Commercial Vehicle Museum, has been hailed a great success –attracting hundreds of visitors for a night of food, drink and entertainment. The popular Museum partnered with Buckshaw-based bar, The Filling Factory, to host a Beer Festival with a difference— ’A Night at The Museum.’ There was also support from Emma’s Coffee House, Street Eatz, Boss Hogs Catering and Cuckoo Gin. Local musicians, including Ian Bailey, The Outliners, Danny and Nikki Fallows. British Commercial Vehicle Museum Trustee Keith Moyes said: “The event offered a rare opportunity to visit the museum after usual opening hours, to take in our collection of beautifully restored trucks, buses and vans, while enjoying

performances from talented musicians and sampling a wide variety of real ales, beers, gins and prosecco.” “We were delighted that so many people joined us for the Festival. Some had been to the museum before, but for others it was their first visit, we hope that now they know what the museum is all about, they will visit us again. We are busy planning events for the rest of this year and into 2020. Watch this space for more information!”

Autumn Spectacular

Talk about plucky pensioners! Go On Tour theatre group (think Golden Oldie people) descended on Fox Lane Sports and Social Club with their 2019 Autumn Spectacular show, and raised almost £550 for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation. The variety entertainment group are based at Blackburn Empire Theatre. All are over 60 years old and the y regularly perform at nursing homes, sheltered accommodation, WI and groups and more. Artistic Director Mandy Stableford, who is based in Leyland, said: “We are all volunteers and we perform up to 60 shows a year. Every so often we put a show on top raise money for the Rosemere Cancer charity. Over the years we have raised thousands for this worthy local cause.” The Autumn Spectacular was attended by around 70 enthusiastic guests, including the Mayor and Mayoress of South Ribble, Councillor Harry Hancock and his wife, Marion - both were up and dancing with

the Go On Tour group by the end of the show. A charity raffle was well supported by local businesses, particularly the BB4B (Breakfast Before Business) networking group. This helped to boost the fundraising considerably. Dan Hill, Chief Officer at RCF, said: “Well done on another hugely successful fundraiser with GO On Tour. It was a fantastic event and a great amount raised.”

In the Garden

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market With Autumn officially here, our gardens and hanging baskets are looking decidedly tired! You can tidy them up, take things out, and add some new compost on the top. Ideal basket plants for over the winter are pansies and violas, add some trailing ivy around the edges. If you like something taller in the centre a few Tete a Tete miniature daffodils add some nice bright Spring colour and will give a little height. Some prefer a small evergreen conifer as a centrepiece, which can be transferred to the garden or a tub/container later on. For the garden, now is an ideal time for planting shrubs so they can establish themselves over the season. If you plant in Spring and Summer and it’s dry and hot, the foliage can burn and the shrub will need to be watered more often. It’s always a good idea to soak the shrub in a bucket of water, dig your hole, fill it with water and let it drain down, add some organic matter, compost or fertiliser. Check for amounts as too much can do more damage than good, tease the roots out with your fingers, plant and then firm it in. Adding bark, a mulch or gravel on top stops weeds growing through and does give the roots protection against hard frosts and extreme heat. If you’re a lover of hyacinths at Christmas, then now is the time to put them in. You need the prepared variety, which are pre-cooled, this treatment makes them flower early. Choose a firm good sized bulb, containers of three are the

most popular, if you choose the same colour, there’s more chance of them all flowering at the same time. Put about an inch of bulb fibre or compost mixed with a 1/3 of garden soil in the bottom of the pot. Put the bulbs in, don’t allow them to touch each other, fill around them, leave the tip of the bulb showing. Water them sparingly and put them in a cool dark place for about 10 weeks, check every other week for water, and just keep them moist, too wet and they can rot off. When the white tips are about an inch high, take them out and place them in a light place, not too warm or too near a radiator, the tips will green up and the flower stem will start to grow. You can stake them if they get too tall. Sometimes you can get two flowering stems so cut the spent one off to allow the other to flower. When they finish flowering, cut the flowering stems off, allow the leaves to die back and plant them outside in the garden, they will then flower naturally in Spring. When you’re out and about walking, take the time to enjoy the Autumn, elderberry, hawthorn, crab apples are out and there are some lovely teasels and seed heads around, all interwoven with cobwebs, looking lovely in the morning dew & frost. Enjoy.
