Leader Comment October 2018 ‘The end of the Summer is not the end of the world, so here’s to October…’ so wrote A.A. Milne, and he wrote Winnie the Pooh, a sure voice of authority. Welcome to October’s Leyland Leader, it’s another 96 glossy pages featuring the finest businesses, trades, services and organisations in South Ribble and beyond. Last month, Leyland Leader’s independent networking group BB4B (Breakfast Before Business) celebrated its seventh anniversary. Every month, at Leyland Golf Club, around 40 local businesses meet before work to share, food, friendship, fun, fellowship and above all, business. An impressive range of Leyland, Chorley and Preston businesses are represented in an

Keith Bradshaw from GO On Tour (Golden Oldies) theatre group and various stallholders. Much credit must go to Debbie Noblett, from The Plant Stall on the market, for regularly inviting John’s programme to Leyland, thereby promoting our town. Speaking of Radio Lancashire, Leyland’s very own Dave Swanton, a regular music show host, is our latest ‘victim’ in the friendly ‘Getting to Know You’ slot. Check him out, he’s on page 39. Is it too early to mention the C word yet? There’s less than 100 days to Christmas now - the trees have changed colour, the weather’s suitably seasonal and the festive season is on the horizon. Party planning is informal setting. The recent birthday already underway gathering was re-branded ‘Seventh Heaven’ for many,. as Phil Heaven, from Insight6, formerly of If you have festive Shoppers Anonymous, gave a fascinating talk (or any other) on customer experience, service and value at events to publicise, every level. let us know we are happy to help through Over at Leyland Market, a regular visitor these pages, via our website or the usual BBC Radio Lancashire’s John Gillmore social media platforms. Give us a call. Enjoy! broadcast live across the county from the heart of our town. John spoke to several local people live on Keith and Ruth Bradshaw air, including Keith McIntosh from Sporting Memories, Angela Browne from La Corte Restaurant, Mandy Stableford and Please mention Leyland Leader when responding to advertisements

A wheely good partnership

THEY say ‘charity begins at home’ and so it does, but what about work? Local charities, and there are many worthy causes out there, rely on links with local businesses. Corporate support is crucial. Phil Weaver Automotive, based at Mere Brow, is a new local business, established earlier this year. New name, perhaps, but the same ethos prevails as the driving force behind this independent motor retail business is determined to continue his ongoing partnership with the Rosemere Cancer Foundation. Phil Weaver (above) has over 35 years in the motor trade and is very passionate about the vehicles he sources and sells, along with the customer service and after-sales he provides. He is equally passionate about charity support, in particular his links with the Preston-based cancer charity. He explained: “Rosemere Cancer Foundation is a wonderful local charity very close to my heart and one which I have supported over the years. “I experienced the wonderful care and support which they provided to my dad during his cancer treatment and I’ve been keen to support events and fundraising campaigns ever since.

“They are a truly dedicated team working hard to raise essential funds for vital services, equipment and care for the benefit of so many local people. I’m proud to continue to support the Foundation.” Proving the partnership works both ways, Dan Hill (above), Head of Fundraising, has purchased a quality used Volvo from Phil Weaver Automotive, further underlining the links between the business and the charity. Dan said: “I met Phil when he started to support Rosemere through his business. I was impressed by his professionalism and dedication. I’d been watching his website for the right vehicle and buying from him was a wonderful experience. Phil couldn’t have been more helpful. He is hugely knowledgeable. My vehicle is a credit to Phil’s amazing standards. I’d recommend anyone looking for a superb second hand car to visit him.”

OCULAR COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY

What is an OCT Scan? OCT deep tissue scanners are one of the latest diagnostic tools available in just some optical practices. These scans achieve high resolution pictures of the structural layers at the back of the eye to help the optometrist determine underlying conditions that you may be unaware of. This service is offered to all of our patients attending the practice during their eye examination. It means the optometrist can look for and diagnose early signs of eye related conditions, for example Age Related

Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, macular holes and many more conditions that can become a sight threatening issue to you. Having regular in-depth OCT scans can help us monitor certain eye related problems too. We do a minimum of 6 scans to make a thorough diagnosis.

To book an OCT scan and eye test at Wrights Opticians, or just to talk to us regarding this service, please call today on 01772 424296. We are always happy to answer any questions!

Case Study Another success story!

Our patient came in recently for his routine eye

examination.

On examination, he was offered the scans but was a little reluctant. However, he had the OCT scans, and we are so glad he did! After the optometrist had assessed the scans, our patient was sent immediately to Lytham Eye Clinic to have a procedure to save his sight!

Getting to Know You Getting to Know You With Dave Swanton, author, BBC Radio Lancashire presenter, PR guru Born: PRI Preston (lived in Leyland first 22 years of my life) Occupation: Media/ Marketing/PR and Customer Service Consultant Married: to Carole (1995) Family: 2 children (Emma and Dan), one grandchild Jack Hero: Jason Robinson (pictured right) who has achieved so much, many things against the odds, he’s my best mate, too. Place to live: Worden Lane opposite Worden Park Greatest fear: Used to be dying but, having been ill recently it brought much home to me, no real fears now. Family holiday: we have a static caravan near Skipton which we visit often. What would you change about yourself: Nothing really, I’m happy in my skin, have achieved lots of things and enjoying life to the full. What makes me angry: Poor customer service, though it keeps me in a job; ignorant people. What motivates you to work hard: I lost everything in a previous life and had to rebuild from scratch. That’s all the motivation I need to put a ‘shift in.’ Favourite thing about career: Being a BBC Radio presenter for 20 years is special and to have such a loyal listening following is amazing. Proudest accomplishment: Writing and

39

publishing several books. My English teacher at Wellfield had a downer on me and I think it’s been my subliminal motivator. What makes me laugh: My mate Ted Robbins, one of the best in his profession. He came into hospital as Den Perry and told the nurses he’d burn the place down if they didn’t let him say hello to all the patients. What did you want to be when you were small: Steve Zodiac, pilot of Fireball XL5 and Mike Mercury of Supercar. I was gutted when I discovered they were puppets. Favourite sport to watch or play: I have to say ice hockey, though I love cricket too. Karaoke song: Oh Carole Nickname: SWANNY - since about aged 4 so it’s stuck for 57 years. Hobbies: Reading my Kindle, watching sports. Superpower of choice: Invisibility Lottery win: Make sure the kids were set up for life; donate to Chorley Hospital who have been so good to me and my family Favourite zoo animal: Elephant Interesting dinner invitations (living or dead): Victoria Wood, Paul McCartney, Emperor Rosko and Neil Sedaka. Childhood memory: Watching Preston North End and starting my love affair with cricket. Glass half full or empty: Definitely half full Desert Island items (3): iPod, Kindle, sun cream Favourite school subject: Mathematics First job: at school it was petrol pump attendant at Reg Daniels on Wigan Road, after school apprentice plumber at Leyland Motors for 6 months before I quit to work for NatWest. What would you never do again: Plenty! I was turned over by someone I trusted 12 months ago and that really hurt - so, not trusting everyone I meet until it’s earned. Looking forward to in the future: Every day when I wake and the challenges it brings. Having a grandson is brilliant, I’m looking to playing a part in his life’s education. Catch Swanny and Sounds like Saturday Night every Saturday on BBC Radio Lancashire 6-8pm

Care in Your OWN Home How much notice do you need to start care? ANSWER. In some cases a relative has telephoned us in the morning and we have started to provide care for a loved one in the afternoon! The answer is we try to start as early as you need care. Starting care within 24 hours is usually required if you have an emergency or if you are discharged from hospital earlier than you expected. PLANNING CARE. Our rotas are complex and it is not easy and trying to fit new care packages at short notice. At times such as the summer holidays or Christmas this is made even more difficult because some of our care staff may be on holiday. Home care is something that you really should planned, ideally we recommend you contact us 2-3 weeks before care is actually needed, this gives us time to meet you, complete paperwork and fit the calls into our rota to ensure that we can provide support at the time you want it. LEGAL REQUIREMENTS. Prior to starting care we have to come and meet you and see the location where we will be providing care. We do what we call an “ASSESSMENT” this means we take details about the times of calls, the duration of calls, the tasks to be carried out and issues such as a your medication, doctor and next of kin. Our regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC) expects us to develop a ”CARE PLAN” from the assessment. This means that everything we are do is documented and who we contact in an emergency is available. Be wary of companies who are willing to start care without having completed an assessment, care plan or having met you in advance – just turning up and starting care is not good practice!

Transferring ISAs

Money Matters with Greg Heath of Derbyshire Booth Financial Management Ltd

Time to bring your investments together? If you have accumulated a number of Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) over the years, keeping them all in one place could give you better control and help you save money. There’s a common misconception that you can’t move your existing ISAs from one provider to another. Transferring your ISAs doesn’t affect its tax-efficient status, but you should make sure that you don’t have to pay penalties or give up valuable benefits. If you want to switch from an existing ISA provider to a new one, you’re perfectly within your rights to do so. Much like a mortgage, you shouldn’t feel as though you’re saddled forever with your first ISA provider choice. Transferring your ISAs could allow you to widen your range of investment choices, as the range on offer can differ between providers.

will count towards your £4,000 Lifetime ISA allowance for the year and qualify for the government bonus, but will not count towards your overall ISA allowance of £20,000 in 2018/19. It is not advisable to transfer from a Lifetime ISA. Transferring your ISAs won’t affect their tax-efficient status, provided you follow the correct process. You might think that to make a transfer from one ISA to another, you’ll need to close down your existing account, make a withdrawal, then open up a new account and pay in. But closing down your current ISA means you’ll immediately lose all the tax benefits, so never withdraw your savings to pay into a new ISA. ADDITIONAL PERMITTED ISA ALLOWANCE Instead, if you want to make a transfer, we’ll contact your provider to inform them and manage the entire transfer process for you. Remember that tax rules can change in future, and their effect on you will depend on your individual circumstances. If you are looking to transfer ISA tax benefits following the death of your spouse or registered civil partner, the survivor can now inherit their ISA tax benefits. This will be in the form of an additional permitted allowance equal to the value of the ISA at the holder’s death and will be in addition to your own ISA allowance.

EASIER TO MONITOR AND MANAGE Another reason to switch is that you could find you’re better off because another provider is offering lower fees and charges. You may also want to move because you prefer to keep all your investments conveniently in one place, where they’re easier to monitor and manage. You can transfer your ISA from one provider to another at any time. You can also transfer from one type of ISA to a different type of ISA – for example, you can move money held in a Stocks & Shares ISA into a Cash ISA, or from a Cash ISA to a Stocks & Shares ISA. Similarly, money held in an Innovative Finance ISA can be transferred into a Stocks & Shares Do you have any questions ISA or into a Cash ISA. about your finances? Lancashire FA delighted to welcome Sporting Memories Group Lancashire Football Association has welcomed a fantastic sporting initiative into its doors, aiming at helping those living with dementia, loneliness or depression. The Sporting Memories Foundation focuses on the power of sporting reminiscence as a means of bringing people together and ultimately to get people talking. Weekly group sessions of Sporting Memories have been taking place at both Lancashire FA Headquarters and Chorley Football Club for a number of weeks, with additional venues looking to be added in the coming months across the region. Sessions have involved looking back on England’s triumphant 1966 World Cup campaign, historical matches from Wimbledon and many more sporting occasions from over the years. Lancashire FA’s Football Development Officer, Andrew Whitaker, who has worked hard to bring the Sporting Memories sessions to the largest County FA in the country, said: “It is an honour to have the Sporting Memories network group at Lancashire FA, the home football for the county.” “We held our launch event in the middle of June, which saw over 45 people attend from different areas of the community.” “During the event we had members of the Championship winning team of

1959/1960 season who are living with dementia, and South Ribble Dementia Alliance who are working towards a dementia friendly community.” “It’s fantastic to see the power of people’s sporting memories bring those who are living with dementia or have family members who are living with dementia all together, and long may it continue.” Keith McIntosh, who organises the group sessions at both Lancashire FA and Chorley FC said: “I approached the Lancashire FA a few months ago with the prospect of hosting the sessions, and they were really keen on the idea. “It’s another sign of their community values and initiatives, and it’s been a roaring success to date.” Weekly sessions take place at The County Ground, Leyland, on Monday’s 11am-12:30pm. Should anyone want to get involved within this project as a volunteer/member of the group or even have sporting equipment they would like to donate to the group, please contact Andrew Whitaker on andrew.whitaker@lancashirefa.com By Harry Lyons, Marketing & Communications Officer, Lancashire FA

Fifty Years of History in the Making

The Leyland Historical Society recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their first meeting held at the Parish Institute, Leyland Methodist Church, Turpin Green Lane on July 1st 1968. The events included an “At Home” day where Society members and Lancashire Local History Federation were given talks, lunch, guided Fishwicks bus trip and walks around Leyland. This was followed by two special talks, the first on Codebreakers and Bletchley Park, the second given by Dr David Starkey on “Henry VIII and the first Brexit”.

Rubber Works, BTR, Baxters, Leyland Paints, the four cotton mills, gold thread works, bleach works, or any other factories or workshop. As the factories have all but disappeared from the Leyland skyline, it is a race against time to record what the people remember about working in all the Leyland and Farington factories. The aim is to record their memories for future generations making them available to the local museums, libraries, colleges and

Leyland Rubber Works 1900 colour print

For seven weeks the Society had a temporary Heritage Centre on Hough Lane which attracted over 1600 visitors to see the various display boards which used to feature in the Craft Tent at the old Leyland Festival and later Craft & Local Societies Fair from 1994 until 2008. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the last 50 years and attract new members to the Society. The group also used the Heritage Centre to speak to the people of Leyland and their families and friends to help us add to the database of Leyland and Farington workers, be it Leyland Motors, Leyland & Birmingham

schools in the form of CD, video and publications. The Society has produced an updated and expanded second edition of “The Industrial Heritage of Leyland & Farington” book which will be given free to all those who provide memories. Would you be prepared to let the Society record your memories as we document the working life of the people of Leyland? Telephone the chairman on 01772 641604 or go to the Society’s website www.leylandhistoricalsociety.co.uk and click on the green button where you can submit your details or just email peter@leylandhistoricalsociety.co.uk By Peter Houghton, Chairman Leyland Historical Society
