Leader Comment November 2019 IT’S November already, there’s not many leaves left on the trees, the days are shorter, it’s darker longer and it’s getting chilly. Don’t despair, there’s plenty to look forward to.
First up is the eagerly anticipated annual Round Table Firework Display and Bonfire in Worden Park -on Tuesday November 5, when else would it be? Check out the fine details on page 83 of this issue. It’s a fantastic, family friendly spectacular and deservedly much-loved. The team from Leyland Round Table do a great job every year lighting up our skies with a brilliant bonfire and all within the confines of our award-winning park. It’s an annual treat for many families, low cost, bags of fun and totally safe. Plus, of course, the Round Table raises lots of money to support worthy local causes. How amazing that they have been providing this event for over 45 years.
Probably not so family-friendly but another local fundraiser will see the dedicated Leyland Town Team and their supporters raising a glass (or three) in aid of their annual Christmas Lights Appeal. This year’s Town Team Santa Pub Crawl will take place on Saturday November 9. Entrants, dressed as Santa/Mrs Santa/ Elves etc will tour Leyland’s participating public houses, raising funds for the festive ‘Light Up Leyland’ campaign. Last year’s 2018 inaugural Santa Pub Crawl raised a fantastic £1000. Cheers!
Fundraising is thirsty work these days, allegedly. Another important November diary date is Saturday November 23, it’s the annual Leyland Christmas Festival. The ever growing event comes once again to Hough Lane and promises to be bigger and brighter than ever. There will be festive celebrations through the town centre, including gifts crafts, food stalls and live music. At 5.30pm the big switch’ on will occur. Reality TV star Molly-Mae Hague, from Love Island will do the honours this year. (see page 72). Looking even further ahead, next year’s Leyland Festival will be on Saturday June 20 2020 - put it in the diary! Well done and thanks to everyone who is involved in organising these events. Margaret Hughlock at Centurion Gallery Margaret Hughlock was born in Lancashire and studied textile and fashion design at Bolton College of Art. She developed a successful career in the fashion, textile and interior design industry. Her career in the design industry led her to work for several large companies such as Marks & Spencer, Debenhams and BHS designing textiles for the European and Japanese markets. Margaret has also worked with Mary Quant helping her to launch her range in Japan. Margaret has established herself as a freelance artist and designer, working throughout the UK, Spain and the USA creating hand-painted furniture, murals, and innovative interiors. Throughout her career, she has earned several awards, including “The national Newspaper Fashion Award” and was winner of “The House Beautiful Designer of the Year” award for fashion and interior design. Margaret works in various mediums and enjoys experimenting with technique and style. She describes herself as a sort of chameleon, creating works to suit a particular theme, background or interior style, although aspects of her career can be seen in these unusual and decorative pieces which incorporate architecture, history and culture. Margaret Hughlock and Centurion Gallery go back a very long way. In the 1970s, gallery owner Tony Dibsdall needed to commission an artist to do some original art work for framing. This was to establish Centurion Gallery as a business supplying shops during the Preston Guild 1972During a dental appointment at Margaret’s brother’s Leyland surgery the subject arose. Serves four, ready in 25 minutes Ingredients
3 Add the prawns and half the 250g packet medium rice noodles chilli, lemon 2 tbsp sesame oil grass and 1 red pepper, deseeded ginger to the 1 yellow pepper, deseeded pan and 6 spring onions, trimmed stir-fry for 2½ red chilli pepper, deseeded 3 mins until 1 stalk lemon grass prawns start 2cm (1in) piece root ginger, peeled to turn pink. Add the peppers and spring onions 300g (10oz) raw king prawns 4 tbsp lime juice and continue stir-frying over a high heat for a 2 tbsp soy sauce further 1-2 mins until the prawns are 1 tbsp sugar completely pink and cooked through. 2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander stalks 4 Add the rice noodles to the pan and toss well Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish to mix. Whisk the remaining chilli, lemon grass, ginger and oil with the lime juice, soy Method 1 Cook the rice noodles according to the packet sauce, sugar and coriander stalks. Pour over the instructions. Drain well and rinse under cold running water. Add a few drops of the sesame noodles and heat through for a further 1-2 oil to the noodles and toss them gently to coat mins. 5 Season the noodles to taste with salt and in the oil. Set aside. freshly ground black pepper and serve piled 2 Thinly slice the red and yellow peppers and the spring onions. Finely chop the chilli and into warmed bowls garnished with coriander lemon grass and grate the root ginger. Heat 2 leaves. tsp of the sesame seed oil in a large frying pan.

In the News Cricket Champions
The 2019 season was a successful one for Leyland Cricket Club which saw the club nominated as the club of the year in the Lancashire CCC end of season awards. The recognition came after the club enjoyed on field success and also built a strong coaching and junior development programme. The first team were crowned league champions of the Northern Premier League for the seventh time in the club’s history. Captain David Makinson led his side to 13 victories across the season which saw them finish 13 points clear at the top of the league. Opening batsman Henry Thompson enjoyed a fine season in clocking up 652 runs and opening bowler Ross Bretherton took 54 wickets. The clubs 4th team also won their league, a great achievement for a side made up of mostly younger players. Lighting Up Leyland Martin Carlin, Chair of Leyland Town Team, has revealed the star who will switch on the town’s Christmas lights this year is Molly-Mae Hague. The 20 years old was the runner-up in this year’s popular Love Island reality TV series. She was one half of the show’s runner-up couple, alongside her boyfriend Tommy Fury. Martin Carlin announced the celebrity appearance live on Radio Leyland. She will flick the switch on Leyland Christmas lights in Hough Lane at 5.30pm on Saturday November 23. Martin said: “We are delighted to welcome Molly-Mae to our town for the big Christmas lights switch-on this year. It’s fantastic to be able to get her on board for the event and we’re looking forward to showing her our wonderful town.” Since appearing on Love Island earlier this year, Molly-Mae’s online popularity has rocketed, she now has more than 3.3

Autumn Spectacular
Talk about plucky pensioners! Go On Tour theatre group (think Golden Oldie people) descended on Fox Lane Sports and Social Club with their 2019 Autumn Spectacular show, and presented a cheque for almost £550 to the Rosemere Cancer Foundation. The variety entertainment group are based at Blackburn Empire Theatre. All are over 60 years old and they regularly perform at nursing homes, sheltered accommodation, WI and groups and more. Artistic Director Mandy Stableford, who is based in Leyland, said: “We are all volunteers and we perform up to 60 shows a year. Every so often we put a show on top raise money for the Rosemere Cancer charity. Over the years we have raised thousands for this worthy local cause.” The Autumn Spectacular was attended by around 70 enthusiastic guests, including the Mayor and Mayoress of South Ribble, Councillor Harry Hancock and his wife,
Marion - both were up and dancing with the Go On Tour group by the end of the show. A charity raffle was well supported by local businesses, particularly the BB4B (Breakfast Before Business) networking group. This helped to boost the fundraising considerably. Rebecca Hall from RCF said: “Well done on another hugely successful fundraiser with GO On Tour. It was a fantastic event and a wonderful amount raised.”

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market
As we move forward from Autumn towards Winter, thoughts turn to December and the C word, that’s Christmas, just around the corner. There isn’t much to do in the garden, only cut things back, scoop off all dead plant material and perhaps put a mulch of bark, stone or something similar on top of your flower beds to protect roots. Thinking about Christmas, a floral centre piece with candles always looks attractive on the festive table. Instead of buying one, take a look around your garden and see what you can use. Holly, laurel, spruce or conifer make an ideal base filler. Start by choosing a container, use wet oasis or wet sand if you don’t want to use a plastic orientated base. Tape or secure the oasis into your container. If you’re using a candle, tape four cocktail sticks around the base, sit the candle in the middle or offside and
push it into the oasis or sand. Make sure it’s secure. Cut pieces of greenery and go round the edges and base. Use berried holly, hawthorn, weather cones or anything else suitable in your garden. Use some artificial, silk or fresh flowers, and baubles or ribbon to add colour. If you want something a little different, use a clear container, fill with berries, stones, holly, festive shapes or let your creative juices flow and experiment. Fill with water and use floating candles For a change. Whatever you do, it’s very satisfying when you DIY. Don’t leave lit candles unattended, but do have a go yourself, it’s also a great thing to get the children involved with. Next month we will looking at how to care for poinsettias. .
