Leader Comment November 2017 MENTION November and what comes to mind? For us, November in Leyland features fireworks at the beginning of the month - and festive lights towards the end. Remember, remember the Fourth of November no mistake really, Leyland’s much anticipated annual Round Table Firework Display in Worden Park will be staged on Saturday November 4, a family friendly time and date.

The team from Leyland Round Table do a fantastic job every year lighting up our skies with a brilliant bonfire and classic fireworks display and all within the confines of our award-winning park. It’s a treat for many families, low cost, bags of fun and totally safe. Plus, of course the Round Table raises lots of money to support top local causes. How amazing that they have been providing this event for 45 years. This year’s dramatic display promises over £7000 of fireworks supplied and co-ordinated by a specialist Pyrotechnics company. Tickets bought in advance are just £3 (under 5s go free) or £5 on the night. The Worden Park gates open at 6pm. Let’s hope the weather is kind and everyone has a great night out. Another important November Diary Date for Leyland is Saturday November 25. The countdown to Christmas begins with the bumper ‘Light Up Leyland’ celebrations, including of course, the big ‘celebrity switch-on.’ Two years ago, it was comedian Dave Spikey and last year Corrie actor Sam Aston (Chesney Brown, opposite) did the honours. As revealed exclusively on Leyland Festival Radio last month, this year the switch will be thrown by long-serving Coronation Street star Simon Gregson (pictured above opposite), who plays Steve MacDonald.

Once again, we congratulate Leyland Town Team who, along with South Ribble Borough Council have worked hard to make this year’s Christmas event even bigger than ever. Apart from a top celebrity and even more lights - they are lighting up Chapel Brow and Towngate - there will be the usual gift stalls, food, drink and live entertainment. In addition, for 2017 we’re eagerly anticipating the unveiling of an Ice Rink and a Snow Globe. There will also be a pink star in memory of Saffie Roussos. It’s worth noting that Leyland Town Team have been nominated for a Queen’s Community Award, that’s national recognition for their efforts. And it’s well-deserved, for several years now, they have been tirelessly working to make a difference. Top team, top efforts!

Keeping the congratulations going, it’s well done to everyone at Leyland Market. The fun loving, hard-working traders have been nominated by Lancashire Tourism for a top award. Judges were so impressed by the friendly stall-holders, excellent food hygiene and dedication to locally-sourced produce, they shortlisted the Market in the ‘best retail experience’ category. Even more reasons to ‘shop local, eat local, live local!’. November can be cold and dull but there’s lots happening here to cheer the spirits and more. Enjoy! Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

Let’s get festive…. with Leyland Market

CHRISTMAS and markets, they naturally go together, don’t they? Here in Leyland, the market traders are looking forward to their busiest time of year. Leyland Market is at the hub of the community, at the very centre of our town, and Christmas has always been a key time for the stall holders. is the longest serving with 41 years under their belt, though several other stallholders have more than 20 years’ service and experience to draw on. Deborah is a great advocate of Leyland Market and what’s on offer here. She said: “We have a loyal customer base, with a loyalty card scheme for customers to participate in a £20 monthly voucher draw. Market Manager Paula Halliwell says: Social Media also plays a role, we use “Leyland is a small, traditional market with a Facebook, Twitter and, more recently, very loyal customer base, it’s hectic but we Instagram to promote offers, stalls and all look forward to the busy Christmas period. “We firmly believe in the principles of live local, shop local and there is something for everyone here. The market is at the heart of Leyland and we are all fully involved in community life. We love to support the Town Team and South Ribble Borough Council in their efforts to promote the town. Naturally, we participate in annual events such as Leyland Festival, Taste of Leyland, the Food and Drink Festival - and, of course, community events in the town. Restaurant Review

The Beijing Restaurant, Chapel Brow, Leyland

DID you know that coach parties of Chinese tourists regularly divert from the M6 to enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine at Leyland’s very own Beijing Restaurant? Me neither, but if that’s an encouraging sign of authentic Oriental cuisine on offer, it’s good enough for me. And on our latest visit, guess what - a party of genuine Chinese diners were happily

enjoying ‘the real deal’ at Leyland’s leading Thai and Cantonese Restaurant. In our experience, the Beijing never disappoints and once again it lived up to expectations. It can’t fail, ‘front of house’ Jacky, along with wife Kelly, are consistently helpful, caring, attentive and good fun. Plus, chef Manfai Lao (Kelly’s Dad) is more than the genuine article, having previously starred at the world renowned Yang Sing in Manchester’s Chinatown. His innovative and authentic creations never fail to please. As ever, we received the warmest of welcomes and coats were still being removed when the latest Oriental adventure kicked off with a bowl of crispy prawn crackers (huge) and sweet chilli dipping sauce. To business, the Beijing menu is wonderfully extensive, there must be something for everyone here, and all so tempting. Sun Lik beer and crisp dry Pinot Grigio (not Chinese but still good) wine as ever helped. For starters, we opted for a traditional favourite, Hot and Sour Soup - it never fails to stir the spirits, wonderful! The bowls were brimming, their contents piping hot, sticky and laced with meats, seafood and Chinese vegetables, including the inevitable chilli - hot stuff, generous and hearty. And the prawn crackers proved a handy accompaniment - ‘going for a dip takes on a whole new meaning.’ Suitably nudged by Jacky, we opted for a sharing

starter, chef’s choice and what a taste-buds teaser it turned out to be. A perfectly presented platter confronted us with yet more choices, where to start being the most crucial. Trust me, we thoroughly enjoyed crispy Thai Fishcakes, succulent chicken skewers with Cantonese sauce, the most delicate King Prawns and Asparagus in light tempura batter - the ultimate in ‘moreish’ cuisine, along with melt in the mouth shredded fillet steak rolls in pepper sauce. The steak element in this format was new to us and it provided a brand new sensation. As ever, the selection nestled on a bed of deep green crispy seaweed - we know it’s really fried cabbage, but still it contributed to a light, wondrous tasty combination. Laughter clearly transcends any language barriers and the Chinese party were clearly having a great time. They, via Jacky, assured us the seafood

starters were a definite ‘must try’ creation. Say no more, we were treated to an unanticipated yet amazing creation—juicy scallops on a bed of rice noodles sitting in their shells whilst bathing in a delicious fresh coriander sauce. Chef Manfai has little English but his amazing creations more than speak for themselves. Delicate and delicious! Next up, everyone’s favourite, the Crispy Aromatic Duck, complete with delicate pancakes (three each), Hoi Sin sauce and matchstick vegetables. The bird was expertly de-constructed at the table by our genial host, leaving us to individually re-assemble our own packaged delights. An absolute quacker! Following the duck demolition process, you’re beginning to feel less than under-nourished and it’s appropriate to negotiate a pause - 10 minutes on this occasion - before brandishing chopsticks and proceeding to the ‘main’ event.

‘...a worthy award-winner’ As with our starters, we left the choice of mains to the chef and Jacky with the stipulation one meat and one seafood would fit the bill. They say you ‘eat with your eyes’ and presentation is key, it certainly is at the Beijing. A wonderful bird’s nest creation moulded from crispy noodles held delicate slivers of beef in a sumptuous salt and pepper sauce, the colour provided by deep green crunchy sugar snap peas. Our ‘second’ mains proved equally delightful. Generous Stir Fried King Prawns with cashew nuts nestled in a stir fry sauce - a perfect combination, contributing superbly to an amazing Oriental ‘surf n turf’ delight. The supporting act for this delightful duo was a bowl of delicate Chinese egg fried rice, completing a meal to remember. Full credit to the chef and those that served us. Confession time - suitably stuffed we failed to finish the fried rice and took the remnants home in a takeaway carton. A meal in itself it was studded with char sui pork, shrimp and more. It provided an excellent lunch alternative the next day. Thank you Jacky and team. There are fascinating desserts on offer at the Beijing, but we drew the line here. Based on experiences thus far, we are confident the range of sweets will deliver. In recent times, Morrisons food critics awarded the Beijing ‘Best Local Chinese Restaurant’ in their Great Grub Awards. Their testers claimed; “It’s a true example of a community town centre restaurant.” And so it is, it’s a well-deserved

accolade. It’s certainly a worthy award-winner with us. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Beijing, but there is much more on offer. If Chinese or Thai banquets are for you, there are the widest selection catering for small or large groups wishing to share the Oriental experience. Choices abound, with extensive vegetarian selections and an impressive wine list to consider. In addition, the Beijing boasts the most extensive takeaway Chinese and Thai menu, including free prawn crackers. Delivery options are also available, call for details. You’d have to go a long way - China, or Thailand perhaps - to beat the experience and value on offer at the Beijing. Indeed, parties of Chinese tourists travel in the opposite direction to sample the delights. Ever wondered where Chinese people go when they fancy going out for a ‘Chinese?’ The answer - Leyland! We thoroughly recommend it. We will be back!

That Shrinking Feeling Money Matters with Greg Heath of Derbyshire Booth Financial Management

Millions of Britons could see their savings shrink because they don’t know how to shield them from rising inflation. The findings are according to research which found more than a third (37%) of people aged 18-65+ are in the dark over ways to grow their savings enough to at least keep up with rising prices. There are a number of different factors that may create inflationary pressure in an economy. Rising commodity prices can have a major impact, particularly higher oil prices, as this translates into steeper petrol costs for consumers. INFLATIONARY PRESSURE - Stronger economic growth pushes up inflation too, as increasing demand for goods and services places pressure on supplies, which may in turn lead to companies raising their prices. The falling pound since Britain’s vote to leave the EU in June last year and the 2017 UK general election result is also contributing to higher inflation in the UK, as it makes the cost of importing goods from overseas more expensive. CONSUMER AWARENESS - Rising inflation is eating away at the nation’s savings, yet the reality is that many people don’t know how to fend it off. A gap in consumer awareness over how some can protect their savings from inflation could mean many people will see their wealth simply drain away. Over the long term, this could threaten to leave people financially worse off in retirement, especially when combined with ultra-low interest rates and stagnant wage growth. Of the 4,000 people surveyed by YouGov, more than a quarter (27%) said they believed property was the best way to outpace inflation. SPENDING POWER - More than one in ten (13%) people thought Cash ISAs could help them maintain their spending power – twice as many as those who said Stocks & Shares ISAs (7%). Just 4% of people said investing in the stock market could help outstrip inflation, while only 3% backed savings invested in a pension. In fact, although they come with greater investment risk, Stocks & Shares ISAs typically offer more protection against inflation than Cash ISAs. RAINY DAY - Cash ISAs are more appropriate to save money for a rainy day but are less suitable for long-term savings, such as for retirement. From this April, the amount people can now shelter

tax-efficiently in a Cash ISA has risen to £20,000 a year. With a bigger ISA pot to fill, the danger is that some people will leave more of their long-term savings stuck in cash where they will be eaten away by inflation. LIVING COSTS - Inflation is bad news for savers, as it erodes the purchasing power of your money. Low interest rates also don’t help, as this makes it even harder to find returns which keep pace with rising living costs. Higher inflation can also drive down the price of bonds. These become less attractive because you’re locked in at interest rates that may not keep up with the cost of living in years to come. BETTER PROTECTION - One option is indexlinked gilts, which are government bonds whose interest payments and value at redemption are adjusted for inflation. However, if they are sold before their maturity date, their market value can fall as well as rise and so may be more or less than the redemption value paid at the end of their terms. Investing in equities can potentially provide better protection against inflation than deposit accounts or bonds that aren’t index-linked, because companies can raise prices to cover higher costs, which in theory should enable them to grow at the same rate as inflation over time. However, investing in equities carries a high risk of losses, and you must be prepared to accept that you could get back less than you put in and that the value of your investment may not keep up with inflation. Information is based on our current understanding of taxation legislation and regulations. Any levels and bases of, and reliefs from taxation are subject to change. What Is Colorimetry? Colorimetry uses coloured optical filters, to alleviate symptoms of visual discomfort, which often occurs in both adults and children when reading. Visual discomfort is very common and can be described as movement of print or visual rivers, which negatively affects concentration levels and comprehension, also known as visual stress. The following symptoms indicate you may be suffering from visual stress: •

Tired when reading

Blurring of print

Letters changing size of shape

Halos of colour surrounding letters

Tiring easily when reading

Patterns on print

Red, sort, watery eyes

Colorimetry is also extremely effective in treating patients with the following type of conditions, where visual stress is common: •

Photosensitive migraine

Dyslexia

Autism

Head Injuries

Photosensitive Epilepsy

Dyspraxia

ADHD

You Deserve To Unlock Your Potential! At Eyesentials, we take pride in using Colorimetry to reduce patients symptoms of visual stress, and if you suffer from any of the above symptoms we would love to help you!

Care in Your OWN Home Care Company Delight After Inspection! Well established care company Independent Living, based on Eaves Lane in Chorley, are celebrating after a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) gave the service a “GOOD” rating. The regulator visited the premises in July and conducted a two day detailed inspection. This included scrutinising staff and customer files, and speaking to both staff and customers about how they found the service. They asked questions such as whether the service is safe, caring, responsive to customers’ needs and well led. Owner Mark Booker commented: “I am over the moon with the inspection result but we are a people business and the credit must go to our hardworking carers and office team who provide such a highly rated service. Policies, procedures and paperwork are onerous in care and I am grateful to the team for ensuring they remain up to date. Many of our customers suffer from illnesses such as memory loss, Parkinsons and strokes, so the job is never easy. I am proud of the whole team”. Independent Living was praised in relation to end of life care. Registered Manager Amanda Singleton said: “End of life care is difficult for some carers but our staff find this work rewarding and several families have been impressed with our support” The company’s customers also provided feedback, this included: “staff are caring and considerate”, “our life has completely changed since Independent Living have been involved” and “it’s a high class service, when you ring the office staff deal with everything”. Mark concluded: “Most of our customers are unwell and many are over the age of 80 yet they have taken the time to provide positive comments about the service and company – I feel humbled. We will continue to serve the people of Leyland, Chorley, Standish and Wrightington areas in the coming years to our very high standards.”

Driving Force with Knickerbrook Cars

CHORLEY used car specialists, Knickerbrook Cars, are helping to set the pace with a new ‘not for profit’ association which has been formed to serve the interests of all independent motor dealers, and their customers. A group of six motor dealers and an industry expert have formed the Independent Motor Dealers Association (IMDA) with a view to supporting and promoting best practice. Phil Weaver (pictured, right) and Ben Collier, business partners who set up Knickerbrook Cars around nine years ago, are delighted to be in at the outset of the IMDA. Phil explained: “We believe that independent dealers deserve the right to have an association to represent their interests. With the amount of change the industry has seen it has never been needed more than at present. “The IMDA will represent every member equally. One ‘voice’ will represent our member’s opinions and concerns at national and regional level, engaging with trade associations and ultimately the Government for the good of all. The association will also provide a reference point for best practice alongside everything that’s needed daily to run a successful and transparent motor dealership. “We’ve already received many offers of support and help from suppliers to set up and deliver cutting edge training and advice without the need to leave the workplace. At present, no association represents the independent motor dealer – the IMDA will provide independent

dealers with this much-needed platform.” The IMDA will also provide a buying co-operative with suppliers to offer discounts, value added services and products to members, and ultimately customers. The group have established a committee, a constitution and a mission statement with a full launch of the association expected very shortly. Phil added: “It’s all about like-minded, reputable independent non-franchise and franchise dealers working together, protecting and raising standards of customer care for the good of everyone. If we continue to stand alone, I believe the independent used car business has a short shelf life. Interest is spreading, already we have over 500 prospective members who have registered their interests in joining the IMDA through our landing page www.clickandjoin.co.uk.” The independent motor industry is changing for the better and through the IMDA, Chorley’s Knickerbrook Cars are in the driving seat. It’s good news all round!

86 Running a home care business with Independent Living of Chorley Mark Booker owns Independent Living which provides care and support so people can continue to be able to live in their own homes in Leyland and Chorley. What does Independent Living provide? We provide care so people can live in their own home and retain independence. Our customers are aged over 70 with issues such as memory loss, Parkinsons, cancer or a stroke, had a fall or an illness. What are the challenges of running a business? Most business owners would say – staff! With people you get surprises – good and bad! If a carer is sick we have to reallocate 8 hours care, and some customers are understanding, others less so! The business also changes rapidly, if someone comes out of hospital the hours can suddenly increase. Care is highly regulated, we are inspected by the Care Quality Commission every 18 months or so and to meet the criteria we have a lot of paperwork, policies and procedures. Media stories about care or carers are often negative yet care

work is hard and most staff are dedicated. What aspects of the business do you enjoy? The best part is meeting people. I am always fascinated by a customer who has run a business – I learn so much from them. Customers may be old and unwell but their stories are great! It’s nice helping solve a family crisis and rewarding when we get “thank you” cards etc. How do you see home care in the future? Most of us would prefer to live in our own home as long as we can rather than going into a care home so the demand for care will increase. The main challenges are around who funds home care, and finding good staff. Please feel free to call in at 225 Eaves Lane, Chorley, PR6 0AG (office hours) or call 01257 696 050.

All Star Success for Leyland Cricket Academy in 2017

The Leyland Cricket Academy is a respected and successful home for young cricketers in Leyland and surrounding areas in South Ribble. With over 100 juniors playing in 8 teams, we are one of the largest cricket academies in Lancashire, and in 2017 we were delighted to introduce our “All Stars” programme for boys and girls

aged from 5 to 8. We now cater from ages 5 to 17 with many juniors also playing in the four Leyland senior teams on Saturday afternoons in the summer. At the Presentation Evening in September there was much to celebrate at the end of another successful season. Our 32 All Stars were first to receive their certificates and medals, for successfully completing the “introduction to cricket” programme. The Under 10 team narrowly lost in their cup final, and the Under 11 team went through the season undefeated. The Academy is also proud that 26 girl members are fully integrated into all our teams, and play a major part in our success. This year a girls/ladies team was launched to provide an alternative pathway for female cricketers, and they swept the board in their first season,

winning the Lancashire Thunder league and cup double. The Under 13 girls team won their Thunder Cup and the Lady Taverners trophy. More girls are taking up cricket and we are delighted that one of our girl members, toured Barbados with the England Girls squad in September. To further encourage ladies cricket, Leyland hosted its first ever “Prosecco Softball Cricket” night in June with 15 teams of Six-a-side for ladies who had never played before. We have subsequently been informed that our Prosecco night was the most successful event of its kind, not only in Lancashire, but across the whole country. We are proud of our success on the field, but we also strive to uphold the very best values for which cricket is associated, besides providing healthy exercise, good coaching, and most of all a lot of “fun”!

We are particularly grateful for all local business support and for this year in particular, to Leyland Leader in supporting our All Stars programme. And we do not stop. Winter training starts in October and goes through to April 2018, when start all over again! (Phil Heaven)

From issue one to 150 we must have delivered around 450,000 magazines or more, with almost 1000 separate businesses, large and small, appearing within our pages. Why advertise in Leyland Leader? Leyland Leader is THE independent business magazine for Leyland. As local businesses seek new ways to promote themselves to potential customers, Leyland Leader is a quality magazine providing the opportunity to get their message across to a tightly targeted audience. It represents incredible value with very reasonable rates compared to alternative forms of local advertising. Leyland people like it and use it. Each edition is widely read and used by residents of the area. Most advertisers appear month after month – and why not? It truly works and generates business for them. It’s a handy directory of local businesses and services, but so much more, with restaurant reviews, editorial features, topical articles and community announcements. People keep it for reference, it doesn’t get thrown away like local newspapers. Unlike other business directories, Leyland Leader limits the competition in each category – by agreement – thereby maximising opportunities for all involved. It is the ideal medium for any business seeking to reach the residents of Leyland. It is well established in the local ‘psyche,’ well-known and well received. Many advertisers originally determined ‘to give it a try – with nothing to lose’ and, fully recognising the bene-

fits, are now long-term ‘regulars.’ Advertising Opportunities New people are moving into Leyland every week. In most cases these new residents are new to the area and have no local knowledge. They are looking for guidance and Leyland Leader offers the perfect opportunity for businesses to get themselves in front of these new potential customers. It works. Leyland Leader is very widely read and used by the residents of the area. We expect most of our advertisers to appear month after month – because Leyland Leader generates business. The price is right. Leyland Leader represents incredible value if your target market includes the residents of Leyland (PR25 and PR26). You can get coverage for a whole year (12 issues) for less than the cost of one week in the local newspapers. It is truly local. All advertisers operate in or close to the area. There is strong evidence that truly local services are preferred by the majority of the UK population. The price you see is the price you pay – there is no VAT or hidden extras to pay. This is because we are a small independently run business. Leyland Leader represents the most effective way for such businesses to market themselves to the residents of the area. “C&W Berry Ltd have supported Leyland Leader since the very first issue and watched it grow with interest. Local businesses supporting other local businesses, that’s what we are all about! LEAVES a poem by Ann Hooson

They wear their rich robes of red and gold to herald Autumn, carpet the ground in glorious colour, line the footways tempting us to crunch and kick.

we would soon be choked with fumes and dust, and on the hazy, hot days do we not seek the shelter of their canopies to give us welcome shade?

Then we sweep them – complain about the work they cause

The undressed Winter trees are beautiful their charcoal silhouettes etched against the ice blue sky but soon we long to see them bursting forth again in budded beauty to welcome Spring.

But think on this – if those same leaves did not clothe the trees in Summer green, breathe to clean the air, FESTIVE EVENTS St James’ Church Slater Lane Leyland PR26 7SH
